This book explains the prevalence of electoral authoritarianism (or multi-party autocracy) in the politics of sub-Saharan Africa and examines why repeated elections have not deepened democracy.

Using Uganda as a case study, the book examines the hegemonic regimes that underpin electoral authoritarian regimes in the context of a colonial legacy. Employing a historical institutionalist approach, the author considers independence struggles as formative moments and the nationalist period as a critical juncture in Uganda's historical experience. The analysis posits that the structure and dynamic of political organization/participation adopted in the run up to independence and the responses by the colonial state laid the ground for "movement politics" and a path toward post-colonial autocratic rule.

Shedding light on how to deconstruct movement politics and consolidate democracy in Africa, this book will be of interest to scholars of African politics and democratization.

This book explores a distinctive neo-fascist movement that emerged in Latin America and Spain during the Cold War. At times self-labeled "Jose Antonians," the book's protagonists evoked the memory and ideology of Jose Antonio Primo de Rivera. The author first elucidates who this Spanish fascist was and why his memory loomed large among Latin American rightists. Second, the book explores how, by prompting political violence and jeopardizing democratization processes, these neo-fascist ideologues impacted their respective societies. In doing so, the book initiates a much-needed debate on fascist memory in the Cold War.

Sir Peter Strawson (1919-2006) was one of the leading British philosophers of his generation and an influential figure in a golden age for British philosophy between 1950 and 1970.

It uses multidisciplinary methods to follow the same individuals, households, and village through time and bring together three themes: well-eing, economic inequalities, and the fate of Indigenous People in small-cale rural societies of the Global South. It finds considerable material deprivation, high economic inequalities within Tsimane' society, and declining standards of living over time It ends by asking "Is this evidence that people adjust to anything or are these the costs Tsimane' pay to retain autonomy and follow a historical lifestyle?"

Explores twentieth-century Mexican counterculture through the lens of pleasure, body autonomy, and music and film undergrounds.

Consuming Citizens offers a fresh conception of twentieth-century Mexican cultural production by critically tracing the underside of mestizo modernity. Examining a diverse corpus that includes poetry, song, avant-garde film, and more from the 1920s to '80s, the volume uses queer, feminist, and psychedelic theories to understand counterculture-and especially different acts of consumption-as a way of creating culture and alternative social structures. Practices of consuming media, sex, and drugs become means of generating community among subjects who have been marginalized by the nominally inclusive mestizo nation. Consuming Citizens thus rethinks nationalism, citizenship, and society in relation to, and as creations of, countercultural bodies.
