This volume highlights factors that led to the onset of the U.S. presence within colonial Brazil's mercantilist economy and then the independent Brazilian empire's agricultural, scientific, religious and educational institutions.

The book examines the interaction of U.S. businessmen, explorers, scientists, immigrants, missionaries, and educators with the dominant institutions of the Luso-Brazilian empires. Employing an institutionalist framework to describe the interplay between forces of change versus forces of inertia that conditioned the economic and sociocultural development of the two empires, the book explains how Portuguese and Brazilian technical innovators employed contacts with the United States for more than a century to attempt to alter Brazil's economy and society.

This book will be of interest to students and scholars of U.S.-Brazil relations and Latin American history more generally.

This edited volume is a systematic collection of research initiatives in the qualitative research paradigm. It showcases how researchers in Malaysia, who are often expected to acquiesce to mainstream ways of designing, conducting and disseminating research, rise above methodological hegemony to carve out a different but meaningful path in order to represent the voice of the voiceless.

In this book, accounts of paradigmatic shifts, applications of philosophical rigour and attention to values-laden inquiry demonstrate how qualitative research can be successfully conducted and reported, revealing insights which profoundly re-shape research design and address ethical sensitivities in social research. The conclusions drawn from the chapters form the rallying cry of qualitative researchers who acknowledge that it is their responsibility to enlighten those who are gatekeepers to the national research agenda, about the strength and legitimacy of the qualitative research paradigm. From a global standpoint, this book functions as a foil to show how in a context not systematically underpinned by critical dialogues of Western philosophy nor the ideology of research paradigms, significant considerations positioned within Eastern concepts of knowledge production can still thrive. The integration of both Eastern and Western perspectives at the crossroads of Asian-based qualitative research offers important lessons that are useful for supervisory, teaching and learning purposes.

This volume will be relevant to qualitative research methodology educators and researchers from across the Sciences and Humanities as well as practitioners in any industry that involves human thought and behaviour.

This volume discusses the transformational role that carbon - both as a concept and as a distinct set of material forms and effects - has come to play in social and cultural life.

As a proxy for greenhouse gas emission data, carbon has grown to become a phenomenon that can no longer be accounted for solely within the technoscientific vocabulary of climate scientists. The Cultural Complexity of Carbon examines the extent to which our knowledge of carbon affects the way that human beings relate to each other and to the climate and/or the environment. It draws on case studies from a diverse range of topics including peatland restoration, religion and energy systems to explore questions that have so far been under-explored in the current literature. These questions include whether the recognition of carbon's role in climate change leads to an incremental adaptation of lifestyles or to cultural or existential transformations, but also more concretely how carbon is made meaningful, and how these meanings are attached to ideals of cultural change or continuity. Spanning multiple perspectives and disciplinary positions, this volume provides a go-to point for the next generation of ethnographic studies of carbon and climate change. It cuts across what has hitherto been largely separate literatures in anthropology, geography and sociology to provide a meta-level orientation to how contemporary narratives of the role of carbon are being told.

By addressing the intimate social and cultural changes that stem from humanity's involvement with its natural and climatic resources, this volume is of interest to students and scholars of climate change within the social sciences and environmental humanities.

This book combines social science concepts, history and transitional justice studies to examine the social dynamics, specific actors and ideologies involved in the genocide in Rwanda and examines what makes this genocide a unique case of mass violence and political transition compared with other cases of mass violence.

It analyzes the conditions necessary for people to engage in intimate violence against their neighbors and family members, asking what inclines "ordinary men" (and women) to join gangs of killers and what role policies, authorities, ideologies, emotions, negotiations and material incentives play in the mobilization for mass atrocities. Comparing genocidal events elsewhere in time and location, the book provides an up-to-date overview of the 1994 events in Rwanda and offers new and surprising insights from previously inaccessible archival records, explaining how to facilitate foreign intervention in the future.

This book is of key interest to scholars and students of African politics, genocide studies and more broadly to security studies, conflicts and conflict-resolution studies, decolonization studies and contemporary and comparative history.

In the twenty-first century, cyberspace and the 'real world' have become inseparable. The stability and security of cyberspace therefore affect, in increasingly profound ways, the economies, international reputations, national security, military capabilities and global influence of states. In their short history, operations in cyberspace have already been used extensively by states and their non-state supporters for many purposes. They are an inevitable aspect of contemporary international affairs while carrying significant risk.

In this Adelphi book Marcus Willett, a former deputy head of GCHQ, argues that there is no coherent or widely shared understanding of what cyber operations really are, how they are used and what they can do; or of their implications for strategic affairs and international law; or what their 'responsible' use really entails. The myths and misunderstandings that abound tend to dull the conceptual clarity needed by strategic policymakers and overseers, and they complicate the essential task in a liberal democracy of maintaining public consent for, and legitimisation of, the development and use of such capabilities. The book sheds light on these issues, exposing myths and clarifying misunderstandings.

This book presents key historical scholarship published in Safundi from 1999 to 2024, tracing South Africa's past through approaches of comparative history, transnational history, and visual history, in addition to addressing the importance of topics like gender, labor and class dynamics, as well as regional historiographies.

The first section of the book focuses on comparative history as a founding method for Safundi, given the journal's origins in American and South African studies, while also recalibrating this approach through a variety of topics-cities, biographies and practices of violence-rather than nation-states writ large. Drawing upon innovative sources of evidence, the second section moves beyond the comparative method to address transnational histories as a new narrative technique for storytelling and analysis. Whether issues of education, immigration or visiting musicians to South Africa, these chapters demonstrate the importance of a post-national approach for understanding the past. The sections that follow fan out into other subject areas, including the uses of visual history, gender roles, class cultures and environmental history, all of which illuminate connections between South African history and other parts of the world.

This book will be an indispensable resource for scholars, students, activists and policymakers, as well as those readers who are generally interested in understanding South Africa's complex history over the past several centuries.

How can we make sense of the persistent political instability in Guinea-Bissau, a small country that has hosted extensive international interventions and made world news headlines over several decades? This book tackles this question, arguing for the need to understand politics in Guinea-Bissau as intricately linked to and deeply embedded in transnational, regional and trans-regional dynamics.

Taking a multidimensional approach, the book brings together international scholars who have studied politics in Guinea-Bissau and Africa for many years, at different levels and from diverse perspectives. Together, the contributors provide an up-to-date analysis of crucial actors and processes, whilst also putting them in historical perspective. The volume connects the study of politics in Guinea-Bissau to a range of empirical phenomena and theoretical debates that have wider relevance far beyond its borders. In this way, it enables a better understanding of regional and international politics, demonstrating how apparently marginal cases are not marginal at all, but are actively entangled in broader multi-dimensional politics.

With important new perspectives and insights both on Guinea-Bissau, and wider regional dynamics, this book will be an important read for researchers and policy makers involved in African politics and security issues.

Wild Anthropocene examines four key areas-the politics of deep time, neoliberalism's socio-ecological impacts, global population growth and inter-species entanglement-to demonstrate how literature illuminates progressive solutions to Anthropocene challenges. The book argues that technological mitigation of contemporary environmental crises must be complimented by a politics committed to multispecies justice. Central to this new politics is the project of reimagining our relationship with time as something other than its status within capitalist praxis.

The book brings together poetry and fiction written by a diverse range of writers to demonstrate how contemporary literature addresses important connections between social oppression and environmental issues. It also critiques techno-managerial visions of the future that celebrate humanity's ever-growing "control" over ecosystems by examining multiple sources of wildness (temporal, environmental and technological) that expose the problematic ideology underwriting such aspirations. Readers will be introduced to a way of understanding the Anthropocene that, while being informed by recent discoveries in earth science and evolutionary biology, also makes a strong case for humanities-based understanding of environmental politics.

This interdisciplinary text will be a useful addition to theoretical discussions on the Anthropocene for scholars, researchers and students in the environmental humanities, literary studies, ecocriticism and environmental philosophy.

Deepens our understanding of this contemporary Chinese thinker's philosophy and its significance.

Li Zehou (1930-2021) was one of China's most prominent contemporary philosophers, transforming Confucian philosophy into a resource for positive change. From a critical rereading of the Analects to a formulation of his own aesthetic theory, Li reinterpreted the tradition from earliest times down to the present day. In this effort, he was inspired by Marx and Kant but was neither a Marxist nor a Kantian. Nor was he a Confucian. He was, and remains, an original: the philosopher Li Zehou.

In this volume, Chinese, European, and US scholars explore Li's contributions to Chinese philosophy and culture, deepening our understanding of his philosophy and its significance while also celebrating the intellectual diversity and richness of Chinese philosophical thought. In a passionate and dedicated endeavor to ensure that Li's philosophy endures and continues to inspire scholars, particularly the younger generation of academics, both in China and around the world, the volume aims to serve as a catalyst for ongoing scholarship and discourse on the work of the philosopher Li Zehou.

Twenty-Five Women Who Shaped the Ottoman Empire is a tale of how women's triumphs as well as their failures shaped a global society-not despite, but because of, gender.

The Ottoman Empire was among the longest-lived polities in history, stretching between the thirteenth and twentieth centuries across three continents, several seas, and scores of cities, deserts, mountain ranges, rivers, and forests. This volume provides a compendium of idiosyncratic life stories and explores how women from these eras and regions understood the shape of the world in which they lived, and how they brought their consciousness of their gender to their efforts to re-shape it.

Among the questions explored in the book are how women have negotiated and constructed the public and private spheres, how to define "women's speech" in a world mediated by men and male-dominated genres and institutions, and how women experienced their bodies as sites of politically inflected reproduction, death and decay.

The book is thus an accessibly offbeat feminist overview of the field of Ottoman History that provides students, scholars, general readers, and non-specialists with insights into the lives and work of both ordinary Ottoman women and celebrated Ottoman women, women who failed despite their best efforts and women who succeeded against all odds-suicides, spies and murderers as well as queens, scientists and poets.

Bringing together eighteen essays from Homa Katouzian, this book explores Iranian history, politics, culture and Persian literature from mediaeval times through the nineteenth century and into the contemporary period.

Beginning with an overview of mediaeval Iranian history, the book then considers developments in the nineteenth century leading to the Constitutional Revolution of 1906-1911, which resulted in the fall of the Qajar dynasty (1785-1925). This is followed by a comprehensive overview of the Pahlavi monarchy (1925-1979) and a new and original analysis of the Iranian Revolution of February 1979. The book also includes essays on modern and classical Persian literature, encompassing Persian poetry and politics (1919-1925), the hitherto unstudied humour in Sadeq Hedayat's life and works, a critical study of Forugh Farrokhzad, a study of Persian literary devices with special reference to the great Persian classic Sa'di, and a study of Sa'di as a lover of beauty and advocate of human morality.

The book analyses Iran in a way that has seldom been done in one single volume - the history of the Qajar and Pahlavi dynasties, the two great revolutions in the twentieth century, and the unfamiliar nature of state and society in Iranian history, as well as some of the high points in modern and classical Persian literature - and is vital reading for anyone interested in the Middle East.

Our current ecological crisis-featuring problems such as climate change, ocean acidification, and mass extinction-raises various moral issues, including a high probability of injustice and massive harm. This book defends a position called ecological pessimism, an attitude whose core feature is the belief that ecological catastrophe is likely to occur in the future.

The author's defense of ecological pessimism has two components. First, he makes the case that the relevant ecological facts about our world make ecological pessimism a reasonable, and indeed plausible, expectation. Second, he argues that ecological pessimism is morally and practically appropriate. Ecological pessimism is a distinctively moral kind of pessimism because the failure to avert ecological catastrophe leads to great ills for human beings and non-human nature. The author's account responds to likely objections to ecological pessimism and makes the case against ecological optimism. Despite this, the author makes clear that being pessimistic about our ecological prospects is compatible with the melioristic project of improving our bad condition. He argues that environmental philosophy as a way of life, with its emphasis on environmental virtue and rich resources for developing spiritual exercises, is both a robust and attractive option for an ecological pessimist.

A Philosophical Case for Ecological Pessimism will appeal to scholars and graduate students working on ethics and environmental philosophy.

This book revisits the concept of peace journalism, a framework that emerged to question and redefine the professional ethos of conflict reporting by challenging traditional news values, such as the focus on negativity, violence, and the elites, to emphasise reconciliation and dialogue, contextualisation of conflicts and giving voice to all involved parties.

The author argues that in a globalised and diverse world, the notion of peace journalism continues to mutate and evolve every time it enters specific contexts and, for that matter, it cannot be regarded as a one-size-fits-all approach. The book reviews and challenges the dominant ways in which peace journalism has been studied and understood to date, before exploring the multiple tensions and relationships between notions of peace journalism and journalistic roles and practices in the reporting of electoral conflict and terrorism by legacy newspapers in Kenya. After deconstructing this complex concept and tracing its motions, mutations, and evolutions in a specific setting, peace journalism is redefined as a dynamic concept that is continuously negotiated between the particulars of context and a shared essence that circles around the values of peace, non-violence, and reconciliation.

This book will interest journalism and media studies scholars, educators, and graduate students, in particular those interested in or specialising in peace journalism or conflict reporting, or the East African (or Kenyan) news media scene.

In Emergent Genders, Michelle H. S. Ho traces the genders manifesting alongside Japanese popular culture in Akihabara, an area in Tokyo renowned for the fandom and consumption of anime, manga, and games. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork in joso and danso cafe-and-bars, establishments where male-to-female and female-to-male crossdressing is prevalent, Ho shows how their owners, employees, and customers creatively innovate what she calls emergent genders-new practices, categories, and ways of being stemming from the simultaneous fracturing, contestations, and (re)imaginations of older forms of gender and sexual variance in Japan. Such emergent genders initiate new markets for alternative categories of expression and subjectivity to thrive in a popular cultural hub like Akihabara instead of Tokyo's gay and lesbian neighborhood of Shinjuku Ni-chome. By rethinking identitarian models of gender and sexuality, reconfiguring the significance of capitalism for trans studies and queer theory, and decentering theoretical frameworks incubated in a predominantly United States academic context, Ho offers new ways of examining how trans and gender nonconforming individuals may survive and flourish under capitalism.

During the early modern period, unprecedented migration caused diseases to take hold in new locales, turning illness and the human body into battlegrounds for competing religious beliefs as well as the colonial agendas in which they were often ensnared. This interdisciplinary volume follows the contours of illness, epidemics, and cures in the early modern British and Spanish Empires as these were understood in religious terms.

Each chapter of this volume centers on a key moment during this period of remarkable upheaval, including Jesuit co-optation of Indigenous knowledge in Peru, the Catholic Church's dissemination of the smallpox vaccine across the Spanish Empire, Puritan collective fasting during smallpox outbreaks, and the practice of eating dirt as Obeah resistance among enslaved people in Jamaica. Throughout, the contributors explore how the porous geographical borders of the transatlantic world meant that medicine and religion were translated through and against each other, over and over again. Residing at the nexus between two largely discrete areas of inquiry, this collection provides significant insight into the numerous points of juncture between medicine and religion in the Atlantic world.

In addition to the editor, the contributors to this volume include Matthew James Crawford, Crawford Gribben, Rana A. Hogarth, Philippa Koch, Allyson M. Poska, Catherine Reedy, and Rebecca Totaro.

Bringing together experts from across the social sciences, this volume examines the consolidation of authoritarianism in Venezuela under the government of Nicolas Maduro. Taking a comparative perspective, it explains how authoritarians can remain ensconced in power amidst profound economic crisis, widespread social discontent, low approval ratings, and international policies aimed at their removal. Moreover, it seeks to understand the mechanisms and dynamics with which Maduro has consolidated an authoritarian regime in Venezuela. To this end, the editors differentiate the concept of authoritarian consolidation from the more studied processes of democratic erosion and democratic backsliding.

The book's contributors explore in detail the country's process of autocratization under Maduro at the national and international levels, identifying and explaining the role of diverse actors and institutions in Venezuela's political regime, and their respective contributions to safeguarding and stabilizing the Maduro administration. By offering a systematic examination of the mechanisms by which regime change was fostered under Maduro's rule, this volume directly engages with scholarly research on regime transitions and democratic collapse; democratic breakdown and the consolidation of authoritarian rule; and comparative institutional work on Venezuelan politics. The book is relevant to scholars and students of Venezuela, as well as anyone interested in the pressing question of regime crisis survival and authoritarian consolidation.

This book examines antagonistic fan communication on Chinese social media, focusing on the sociolinguistic dimensions and digital strategies in fandom discourse of Chinese celebrities to engage in broader questions around language, social media, and fan culture.

The volume explores the different factors which contribute to antagonism in these contexts, including competitive fan posting meant to boost celebrities' positive publicity, but also at fans' communicative practices themselves. Adopting an action-centered sociolinguistic framework, Hou considers how antagonistic fan communication transforms as fans' engagement with digital technologies transforms and their experience with mediated content deepens. The book takes an in-depth look into how fans use a mix of verbal aggressions, such as trolling, with savvy digital tools, such as identity masking and memes to avoid content removal, in order to mobilize, collaborate, and communicate on a wider scale and, often times, funnel those energies into digital activism events. Hou shows how the study of such discourses can not only reveal fresh insights into the state of fandom culture and political communication online but also directions for future research on language and social media.

This book will be of interest to scholars in digital communication, sociolinguistics, digital media studies, discourse analysis, and celebrity studies.

Drawing on the author's personal experiences working across the globe, this book explains why we need to conserve biodiversity, the threats it faces, how we can successfully conserve biodiversity, and some success stories of how we have conserved it.

This is a personal journey from being an environmental vandal to internationally renowned conservationist. The book follows the author's life and career in conservation, from scarring koala-feed trees to being chased by elephants, sniffed by lions, gored by quokkas, and watched by wolves. It mixes robust facts with fun stories to engage a broad audience spanning the general public to academics and enthuse them into promoting the conservation of the plants and animals humanity relies on. Split into five sections, the first explains why we should conserve Nature and the value it holds. Section 2 discusses the threats to biodiversity, and Section 3 describes the author's personal experiences in conserving biodiversity, from creating protected areas and managing invasive species, reintroduction programmes, and the social policies we need to enact to ensure biodiversity persists. Section 4 provides examples of conservation success stories from across the globe, and the book concludes by looking at the big picture issues society needs to address to ensure that future generations get to experience the same degree of beauty of the natural world that we have.

This book is a must read for all concerned with conserving Nature and sustaining our planet.

This edited volume collates over a decade of Greg William Misiaszek's work on ecopedagogy, with a new focus on insights and possibilities for global citizenship education (GCE) scholarship. Rooted in critical theories and originating from Paulo Freire's popular education models of Latin America, ecopedagogy is centered on understanding the struggles of, and the connections between, human acts of environmental violence, social injustices, and Nature's unsustainability. The book brings together diverse understandings of ecopedagogy, introduces key concepts of teaching for local-to-planetary citizenship, and explains how both are essential for socio-environmental justice and planetary sustainability. Grouped into three parts, it includes new, detailed introductions, with crucial GCE threads explored throughout the chapters. This includes discussions of how non-critical teaching for (environmentally) sustainable development that opposes critical GCE's essence instills anti-environmentalism, rather than countering it. As a comprehensive and fresh curation of Misiaszek's work on timely and critical topics, it will appeal to academic scholars, educational researchers, teachers, and social/environmental movement leaders/participants, among others, who have interests in GCE, environmental sustainability, sustainable development, environmental teaching, and social-environmental justice.

This book analyses international interventions in the education sector of conflict-affected countries in a world order shifting towards multipolarity.

The work presents a genealogy of interventions in the education sector and unravels which agendas, among security, peace, humanitarianism and emergency, underpin such interventions. By using a comparative case study analysis across
three regional expanses and, more specifically, three countries - Kosovo, Niger and Jordan - the book aims to contribute to reflections on the interaction between the national and the international. The research finds that an overarching stabilization imperative has informed international projects on education reform in the three respective countries. As the world is becoming increasingly multipolar and new threats are being framed as challenging and threatening the security of Western donors, local actors have more agency towards international templates of intervention. The book shows how contemporary processes of state- and nation-building in conflict-affected global peripheries are shaped by substantial forms of external intervention, in which practices of sovereignty and statehood are continuously supervised and negotiated. The author advocates for a re-adaptation of International Relations theoretical lenses, which goes beyond the methodological nationalism and disciplinary parochialism that has characterized much of the existing literature on state making/unmaking and international interventions in a globalized world.

This book will be of much interest to students of education, international intervention, peace studies, security studies and International Relations.

This book revitalizes the discourse on backsliding democracy and the global rise of autocracy, extending the consequences of their changes to a sustainable future.

In three sections, the book systematically examines diverse pathways leading autocracies to rise and spread worldwide and debates the future consequences. Using a multidisciplinary approach, the book conceptualizes the rise of autocracy and the backsliding of democracy by studying dictatorship, authoritarianization processes, autocracy's diffusion, and populism. It reveals the global spread of autocracy and reflects on the challenges this poses to, and the likely impacts on, a sustainable future.

This book is of key interest to scholars and students of autocracy/autocratization, democracy and democratization, political sociology, sustainability, and more broadly to international relations and comparative politics.

Arguing that there has never been a consensus on which rights all people are entitled, Beyond Illiberalism: Rights, Rhetoric, and Reality in a Pluralistic World traces how the concept of human rights is tied to a global project rooted in colonialism and grounded in nineteenth-century liberalism and post-World War II social democratic principles.

This book contends that human rights are conceived, imagined, and promoted by dominant states, organizations, and activists within a specific liberal framework, and that, after more than 200 years, the dream of a universal history rooted in the worldview of G.W.F. Hegel has been displaced by the stuff of practical reality.

Robert J. Shepherd shifts our attention to rights as a matter of human practice and emphasizes the importance of the actualization of rights within local contexts, demonstrating the spuriousness of categorizing governments as "liberal" or "illiberal" based on preconceived notions of what counts as legitimate rights. This book will appeal to scholars of anthropology, sociology, socio-legal studies, and cultural studies.

An examination of struggles for national sovereignty and social justice as seen through patriotic anthems and songs of resistance.

Anthems are songs of loyalty and devotion with religious or quasi-religious meanings, typically associated with nation-states. Singing patriotic songs together encourages a sense of shared identity and unified community among citizens. Anthems compares traditional American anthems, such as "The Star-Spangled Banner" and "America the Beautiful," with anthems of resistance from contemporary social movements, such as Occupy Wall Street, Black Lives Matter, and Standing Rock. Although seldom fully recognized by political scientists, musical song plays a significant role in struggles for national unity and social justice. While America's national anthems celebrate a unitary (white) nation, these alternative anthems challenge the definition of sovereignty as property that characterizes modern Western democracies. They offer an alternative vision of a multicultural democracy still struggling to emerge. Written from an interdisciplinary perspective on culture, economics, and politics best described as critical theory, Anthems is intended for scholars, students, and, most important, citizens.

Public Sector Ethics: Compliance, Integrity, and Comparison presents a comprehensive treatment of the subject of ethics in the public sector. What structural elements are necessary and how to create organizations that make ethics their priority are the questions that this edited book addresses. It focuses on ethics management in public organizations and includes national case studies from select low- to middle-income countries.

Taken together, the chapters in this book cover the mechanisms, activities, and approaches that public organizations employ in ethics management. These are of utmost importance because the actions of public organizations affect citizens' lives, liberties, and property, and their ethical character affects citizens' faith in government. Numerous factors are at play in each instance of ethics management in public organizations, and controlling ethical behavior is difficult. This book suggests that effective ethics management requires a comprehensive approach. Traditional approaches such as ethics codes, policies and legislation, training, incentives, sanctions, monitoring, and compliance reviews are tools to achieve ethical conformity. Yet, they are effective only if leadership, values, and cultural transformation support them. This edited volume is a cohesive treatment of the subject, covering traditional approaches to ethics management, such as monitoring and compliance, and more contemporary approaches, like integrity building through ethical leadership and organizational values, as well as how to skillfully and effectively combine them to change organizational ethical contexts.

This book exposes readers to new approaches and emerging issues in public sector ethics, aids in understanding the challenges of creating ethical organizations, and helps to develop a deeper understanding of ethics management in government organizations. It will be of interest to researchers, academics, and advanced students in the fields of business ethics, public administration and management, leadership, and organizational studies.

This is an open access title available under the terms of a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 International licence. It is free to read on the Oxford Academic platform and offered as a free PDF download from OUP and selected open access locations. Using the example of Sweden, the authors reassess the grand strategies of small states in international politics from the end of World War II until its new membership in NATO in 2024. Utilizing role theory, they identify a small state's grand strategy through specific national foreign policy roles which at certain times coalesce into master roles. Four foreign policy action strategies, building on domestic agency and the influence of systemic structures, depict this domestic process of role adaptation. Sweden's foreign policy roles were shaped according to the degree of autonomy and integration deemed necessary for security, economic development, and social cohesion as perceived by the domestic political elite. The ensuing empirical analysis identifies this set of evolving roles in an increasingly unstable international security environment. The authors thus explore how a small state can develop certain roles over time and how the dominant roles can coalesce into an overarching grand strategy. The Oxford Studies in Grand Strategy is a major new series of cutting-edge monographs that examine the grand strategies of states, and those intergovernmental organizations and nonstate actors who credibly aspire to sovereignty. Books concentrate on the contemporary aspects of grand strategy, while paying due respect to the historical antecedents of a nation's grand strategy and their relevance for a leadership's current choices. The series is pluralistic in terms of theory and method, and maintains a broad view of the ways, means, and ends that undergird a grand strategy. Analytical and explanatory in contribution, books in the series feature a rigorous analysis of the interaction between domestic factors and global forces and provide a clear understanding of how that interaction shapes a grand strategy's formulation, codification, and implementation. Series Editors: Thierry Balzacq (Sciences Po, Paris), Peter Dombrowski (US Naval War College), and Simon Reich (Rutgers University, Newark)

Offers an important and innovative contribution to environmental philosophy by investigating loss in times of anthropogenic climate change through the elements of water, fire, air, and earth.

Beyond Elemental Loss offers an important and innovative contribution to environmental philosophy by investigating loss in times of anthropogenic climate change through the elements of water, fire, air, and earth. Marjolein Oele argues that the current experience of loss prompts a reassessment of the conventional meaning and conceptualization of loss. She proposes that such loss is best understood through infinitesimal, diachronic shifts occurring in the elemental constellations that structure the world-water, fire, air, and earth-and humanity's incremental inability to cognitively and affectively make sense of this world increasingly transformed by anthropogenic forces. Through a generous yet critical reading of a broad range of interdisciplinary sources tracing changes in our relationship to the elemental over time, Oele's scholarship plumbs the history of philosophy as much as it pulls from Indigenous philosophies, continental thought, mythologies, anthropological and historical sources, science, and ecology. The book's argumentative arc ultimately directs our attention toward constructive transformations in our cognitive and affective habits, and it argues that trust can bring us beyond elemental loss.

The IISS Strategic Dossier Turbulence in the Eastern Mediterranean: Geopolitical, Security and Energy Dynamics surveys the geopolitical landscape, defence dynamics and energy prospects of the region that spans Cyprus, Egypt, Greece, Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories, Lebanon, Libya, Syria and Turkiye. It assesses the security outlook for the region, considering potential flashpoints for intra- and inter-state conflict and evaluating whether newly developed defence ties could evolve into formal alliances. Energy discoveries made in the region in recent years have spurred states' ambitions to become energy hubs. The dossier evaluates whether such aspirations could lay the foundations for deeper regional cooperation or, conversely, increase the risk of confrontation.

The dossier includes both thematic and country-specific chapters. In addition to the countries in the area of study, it explores the involvement of seven external powers - China, the European Union, France, the Gulf Cooperation Council states, NATO, Russia and the United States - and assesses where the opportunities and risks for these actors lie.

This volume will be essential for policymakers and business leaders seeking a better understanding of the factors shaping the geopolitics of the Eastern Mediterranean region.

Protest walls have played an important role in movement communication and mobilizing the public. We focus on contentious performances and the way diverse actors co-authored spaces into the protest walls that were seen in Hong Kong and other countries including Lebanon, Iraq, and Taiwan. We argue that once created, protest walls can become objects symbolic of dissent. They exist as a lexicon-a complex language of symbols and spatial practices. This language is now an internationally understood method of protest which has a high degree of transferability and can be adapted into local contentious contexts or used to transmit local concerns into the international consciousness. Finally, we show that the protest wall can shed new light on the relationship between activists, their claims and their targets that does not exist in other types of contentious performance.
