One of the main questions addressed in this book is whether the EU enlargement fatigue has resulted in broken promises leading to a "commitment fatigue" among the EU candidate states from Western Balkans. Until recently, political and business leaders from Western Balkans, almost without exception, have repeatedly highlighted their aspirations for joining the Union. The discussions about future of Europe would be incomplete, without investigating the relations between EU and Western Balkans. This book addresses academic researchers, policy makers, and higher education students.

The Nuremberg Diary and Correspondence provide readers unprecedented access to the personal papers of Leo Alexander, the chief medical expert at the Nuremberg Doctors’ Trial (1946?1947). This annotated edition offers a unique insight into the ethical and legal challenges that Alexander and his colleagues faced as they uncovered and documented the medical crimes of the Nazi regime, including human experiments, compulsory sterilisations, and the so-called “euthanasia” programme ? the killing of mentally ill and physically disabled people. Through his diary, we witness the meticulous work of a dedicated investigator, which laid the foundation for the Nuremberg Code, a landmark for human rights in modern biomedical ethics and the establishment of international medical law. Complemented by selected correspondence, photographs, scientific publications, detailed indices and excerpts from the trial, this volume is essential for anyone interested in the pursuit of justice and the development of human rights in medical science in the wake of the Second World War. The book is dedicated to the victims and survivors who have been persecuted by authoritarian regimes.

Russia seems to be hurtling toward fascism. Vladimir Putin and his allies-domestic and foreign-have obliterated and colonised Ukrainian cities in a "holy war," committed over 100,000 war crimes , introduced Draconian domestic crackdowns on free speech and political opposition, and rewritten the constitution to seize power in perpetuity. The state and its propagandists declare their intentions to destroy the Ukrainian state and commit genocide against the Ukrainian people, to overthrow the liberal international order, and to recreate the Tsarist and Soviet empires. Meanwhile, the Russian population languishes in a militarising culture in which civic life has been replaced by a cult of war, past and present. Each of these phenomena invites comparisons with past fascist regimes. This volume gathers leading experts in the first scholarly study of a new Russian fascism that draws on distinctly modern forms of control and violence as much as on historical precedents. An array of theoretical debates and case studies from across disciplines makes this a pioneering study of modern Russian politics. The volume's contributors include Jaroslava Barbieri, Paul D'Anieri, Jolanta Darczewska, Maria Domanska, Ian Garner, Joanna Getka, Andreas Heinemann-Grueder, Taras Kuzio Alexander J. Motyl, Andreas Umland, and Michal Wawrzonek.

In 2020, Belarus erupted in protest against a rigged election and the brutal response of its authoritarian regime, marking a pivotal moment in the nation's history. Though the revolution did not topple the government, it birthed something profound: a new, collective democratic subject. How did a populace, once politically indifferent, transform into a bastion of solidarity, unity, and fierce dedication to democratic ideals? This book delves into the heart of this transformation, exploring the emergence of a vibrant political community. Drawing from her firsthand involvement in the movement, the author combines philosophical inquiry with insights from social and political theory. Through personal narratives and in-depth interviews, she paints a vivid picture of the genesis of this new 'we', a democratic multitude galvanized for enduring political change. This exploration is essential reading for anyone captivated by the dynamics of political awakening, the power of democratic solidarity, and the resilience against authoritarian control.

This book offers a thorough geopolitical analysis of modern China through the lens of defensive realism. It uniquely scrutinizes China's "globalness" within the taxonomy of great powers, challenging the common narrative of China as a global power. In doing so, the book presents an empirical-qualitative model to assess China's global power status, encompassing four dimensions: 1) The Great Wall of Technology and Economic Access (Material Power); 2) The Great Wall of Cultural and Intangible Access (Intangible Power); 3) The Great Wall of Political Access and Global Governance (Governance Power); and 4) an analysis of China's comprehensive power. Drawing from firsthand observations, the book examines China's ascent in the international order, emphasizing its strengths and vulnerabilities. With this, it concludes that China has a global vision and ambition, positioning itself as a quasi-global power. Essential for scholars, policymakers, and global politics enthusiasts, this book is a valuable contribution to existing international relations scholarship.

During the publication event of her biography, the former Chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel, stated that she refused to actively advance the Ukrainian NATO membership because there was an example of a successful, non-aligned Russian neighbor in Europe. The country was Finland, widely recognized for her staunch support for Ukraine after the Russian invasion in February 2022. However, this is not the whole story. Certainly, soon after the invasion, Helsinki decided to join NATO-breaking the tradition of a bilateral >>special relationship<< with Russia, originally stemming from a traumatic Cold War history of forced appeasement. During the Soviet era, Finland had been treated by the KGB as an >>experimental laboratory<< for different forms of political, economic, military, intelligence, and informational coercion. Not only did the Soviets learn and test new strategies. Especially after the collapse of the USSR, Finland and Finnish >>friends<< were used to promote Russian strategic interests within the European Union. The roots of >>Schroederization<<, the Nord Stream pipeline, and the EU citizenship of Vladimir Putin's closest oligarchs can be traced to Helsinki. During the era of transatlantic turmoil and new power politics, it is essential to understand the depth and methods of the Russian influence activities in Europe. This book illustrates them holistically by focusing on the Finnish example, not forgetting wider geopolitical contextualization, e.g. implications for Ukraine, debate on European strategic autonomy, and continental memory politics.

For the first time in modern Canadian history, the leader of one of the two governing party was chosen on a decidedly populist platform. Before the election of Pierre Poilievre as leader of the Conservative Party, many believed that Canada was immune to populism. In the months following his arrival as leader of the Official opposition, the polls in his favor soared. So much so, that it prompted Prime minister Justin Trudeau's resignation. The success of Poilievre's stand in favor of the working class also forced the main left-wing party, the NPD, to adopt an even more populist tone. Does Pierre Poilievre's populism come from Donald Trump's playbook? Are the 2022 truckers' occupation of Ottawa and the post-Covid pandemic inflationary context explanatory factors? This new populism made in Canada is essentially economic, with no nativist component. But its first victims were carbon pricing policies to combat climate change. From a global perspective, what lessons can we draw from this shift in Canadian politics?

For Europe, the 24th of February 2022 marked a historic turning point. Until then, many decision-makers and commentators did not understand that developments in post-communist Russia can lead to the biggest war in Europe since 1945. These two collected volumes illustrate some of the factors preparing this tragic escalation. They assemble select papers published earlier mainly in the Germany-based Journal of Soviet and Post-Soviet Politics and Society and Forum fuer osteuropaeische Ideen- und Zeitgeschichte (Forum for the Contemporary History and Ideas of Eastern Europe). This second volume reflects upon critical characteristics of late and post-Soviet memories, ideologies, and politics of Russia. The volume's contributors are Kaarina Aitamurto (Helsinki), Boris Barkanov (Morgantown, WV), Alexander Etkind (Vienna), Mischa Gabowitsch (Mainz), Michael Kirkwood (Glasgow), Leonid Luks (Eichstaett), Andrey Makarychev (Tartu), Rosalind Marsh (Bath), Michael McFaul (Stanford, CA), Felix Riefer (Bonn), Mikhail D. Drawing on both international and Russian sources, expert analyses, and empirical data, this essay collection examines the real state of political, economic and social affairs in Russia. It explores the nature of the political regime, the rhetoric of Russian state propaganda, and delves into existing and potential socio-political divisions. The contributors also scrutinize ethno-national dynamics within the pseudo-federation, Russia's "claims" on Ukraine, and the concept of "World Order Z." This "new world order", which Russia attempts to establish through what it calls a "special military operation" against Ukraine, is analyzed as a tool for constructing an international system on Russian terms.

Taiwan is seen as one of the most dangerous global flashpoints today. The political status of Taiwan (i.e., the Taiwan issue) is very complex, which involves multiple important aspects, including nationalism, ideology, democracy, national identity, regional security, geopolitics, geoeconomics, and great power rivalry. Taipei, Beijing, and Washington are the three key parties that have particularly high stakes and play the most important role in the Taiwan issue. Because of their very different concerns and fundamentally conflicting interests behind the Taiwan issue, Taipei, Beijing, and Washington are pursuing very different goals regarding the future of the island. Covering some most important aspects of the Taiwan issue, this edited volume provides readers with a multifaceted picture of this important and complex issue in the world today.

What can gender tell us about political parties? Historically, and often still, political parties have been dominated by men from majority groups, and shaped by traditional gender relations and norms that generally disadvantage women. Gender is crucial in understanding the persistence of men's political overrepresentation and the corresponding marginalization of women in politics, as well as in exploring questions of why and how parties adapt and change, and what their role is in representative democracy. Gendering Party Politics explores the relationship between gender, institutions, and political parties through a feminist institutionalist lens, advancing new theoretical, methodological, and empirical directions for party politics scholarship. The contributors synthesize two decades of research, introduce foundational concepts and frameworks, and present innovative methods and empirical cases from around the world. They also make the case as to why this research matters, evaluating the practical opportunities for and obstacles to transforming parties in more gender equitable ways. Each chapter demonstrates the wide-ranging applications of feminist institutionalism for understanding the complexities of gender dynamics within parties. Together, these contributions constitute a significant intervention into wider debates over the relationship between political parties, power, democracy, and representation. Featuring insights from an international cast of leading scholars, Gendering Party Politics is essential for anyone interested in the evolving landscape of gender and politics, political parties and institutions, and political representation. Chapter 8 of this work is available under the terms of a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 International open access license. This part of the work is free to read on the Oxford Academic platform and offered as a free PDF download from OUP and selected open access locations.

In the decade following the end of the Cold War, Western democracies stood victorious, brimming with optimism and grand designs. Today, the 1990s look less like a great triumph for liberal democracy and Western modernity than a decade in which post-Cold War excitement and anticipation obscured a slowly gathering global storm. At a time of intensifying geopolitical rivalry, economic nationalism, and ideological extremism, Rethinking the 1990s brings together a group of leading political scientists and historians who look back on that era of world-historical change to identify choices and pathways that have brought the world to this unsettled moment. Authors explore whether the United States and other countries could have made different choices in the 1990s to place the world order then envisioned by Western policymakers on a firmer foundation. Written in a highly engaging style, these wide-ranging essays offer new insight into the strategic choices, political trade-offs, and missed opportunities of that historic decade as well as much-needed perspective on the international pressures and domestic cross-pressures fracturing the liberal order today.

The book is the first historical reconstruction of Italian political events over the last thirty years, that is, the period from the Tangentopoli crisis of the early 1990s to the present day. In particular, the book examines, for the first time in a systematic and documented way, the controversial relationship between parties and intellectuals, highlighting the distance, not to say the unbridgeable gap, created between politics and culture in Italy in the last three decades, the decades of the so-called Second Republic. In other words, it tries to explain why the close link between politics and culture that was the hallmark of twentieth-century politics has dissolved in Italy, and through what stages we have come to a substantial incommunicability between these two worlds in the last three decades.

This book looks at the way the 2020 Second Nagorno Karabakh War allowed urban spectacular transformation in war actors' attitudes towards space and transnationalism. It concentrates on some specific events, including pre- and wartime life in the Nagorno Karabakh political capital Stepanakert and compelling historical and cultural heritage issues in the cultural capital Shushi and its meaning for the Armenian population worldwide. Attention is placed both on wartime social and urban changes and to the destruction, or attempted destruction, of Armenians cultural heritage during the conflict and in post-war Azerbaijani occupation. The first part of the book reconstructs the historic and religious context of Nagorno Karabakh, linking it with the regional geo-political dimension; meanwhile, the case studies analysed in the second part of the book will help understand spatial meanings (e.g., towns, cultural centres, monasteries) and the symbolic value of urban heritage while also discussing some conflict markers in the context of theories of transnationalism and diaspora studies.

This open access book delves into the politics of oppression and dispossession driven by global neoliberalism and state authoritarianism. Challenging liberal biases, it introduces the concept of "neoliberal authoritarianism," highlighting how the Russian state has transformed within the context of neoliberal globalization into a new state formation where authoritarianism is reinforced by neoliberal rationalities. The book analyzes neoliberal authoritarianism through an ethnographic lens on universities and their governance, which have become a new frontier of neoliberal economic development, serving the imperatives of growth and competition.

Who is targeted by Putin's propaganda and how does it work? What is "hybrid war," and how is it related to the concept of the "Russian World"? Who is responsible for propaganda at the technical level, and how exactly does propagandistic journalism function? Who are Russia's allies in terms of ideology and where do the main threats may come from? Finally: Is it possible to resist information war, and what are the best methods for fighting the Kremlin's disinformation campaigns? In this book, Ukrainian political scientist Mykola Davydiuk discusses these and other questions. In an accessible manner, the author shares his experience of resisting media propaganda. He gives examples of how people are being manipulated and explains how to avoid the role of a puppet in the Russian hybrid theater. The book will is especially valuable for those who care about the current developments in Ukraine and the information space its citizens live in, as well as for those who take an interest in politics, not waiting until politics takes an interest in them.

This compelling collection of essays unveils various underlying layers of the Russo-Ukrainian War, casting it against a sweeping socio-historical backdrop. Far more than a military-political chronicle, this empirically rich volume-rooted in the contested terrain of history-delves into a tapestry of pressing themes: humanitarian ripples of neighboring alliances, fierce contests within the information arena, seismic shifts in social fabric, and intricate dimensions of identity transformation. The incisive analyses are often methodologically innovative, particularly in dissecting the functioning of occupation regimes within modern warfare and unearthing subtle yet striking historical parallels. It probes both the grand sweep of institutional forces and the intimate pulse of community life, offering a dual lens on the conflict's far-reaching impact. Spanning the first decade of the Russo-Ukrainian War, the essays defy a simple division into its two main phases, instead weaving a narrative that traces the unbroken threads and evolving dynamics of the struggle. Born from conference dialogues, this book does not chase exhaustive completeness. Rather, it embraces the enigma of an unfolding war and its uncertain horizon. With thought-provoking insights and space for contemplation, it beckons readers into the heart of a complex, living history.

In this compelling monograph, Andrii Martynov traces the evolution of the mutual images that Ukraine and Europe had and have of each other. This historical journey examines how these perceptions were shaped by mass media - from the press and broadcasting in the early 20th century to today's multimedia landscape. The narrative unveils how wars, ideological battles, and the Iron Curtain distorted these imaginations, while the advent of social media has accelerated transnational communication. Martynov explores how images transformed across generations and highlights the role of everyday life and mentality in shaping European identity. The book's analysis vividly depicts how "image wars" reflect deeper psychological and historical conflicts. For Ukrainians, European integration intertwines with the realities of war, challenging the notion of Europe as a peaceful haven. Martynov's work is both a methodological toolkit and a subjective vision, offering readers a nuanced understanding of how complex images have been routinized into social practices, and are perceived as norms in modern Ukraine and Europe.

During the interwar years, Vietnamese society witnessed a rapid change in the way women looked. Rejecting the model of a sequestered maiden with blackened teeth and long hair, they embraced a vivid palette of colors-and a colorful lifestyle to match. Before the war, Vietnam would have seemed like an unlikely place for a beauty industry to thrive. Virtuous young women were expected to hide their natural beauty, not manipulate it with makeup or flaunt it at a beauty contest. Yet ordinary women began seeking out the latest fashions-to great public consternation.

Christina E. Firpo explores the development of beauty culture in this period, showing how women's faces and bodies became contested sites for envisioning what it meant to be Vietnamese in the modern world. She considers dress patterns, lip-lining tutorials, hairstyles, physiques, and beauty pageants alongside new technologies of media, transportation, and leisure and the anxieties they provoked. The everyday decisions women made about their appearance, Firpo argues, were ways to stake a claim to the roles they wanted to play in the new society taking shape around them. Drawing on a vast array of sources, Beauty and the Nation offers fresh insight into the tumultuous political, economic, social, and cultural changes that swept across Vietnam during this crucial period.

This book, based on a systematic analysis of leaders' speeches, examines how regimes in Turkey, India, Russia, and China strategically weaponize the concept of 'civilization' along with emotional appeals, such as pride, fear, and nostalgia, to challenge global liberal democratic norms. As the influence of liberal democracy wanes, these nations increasingly declare themselves 'civilization-states'. By redefining national identity to include peoples living in foreign countries, justifying belligerence abroad, and reinforcing anti-democratic practices domestically, these regimes position themselves as guardians of transnational peoples with distinctive civilizational values. This is the first book to systematically explore how and why these states leverage civilization and emotional manipulation to reshape both domestic politics and international relations.

In the wake of the September 11 attacks, US officials identified the so-called battle for hearts and minds as the "second front" in the war on terror. A wave of funding flowed into public diplomacy in the Middle East, seeking to change views of the United States through Arabic-language communications-often while hiding the traces of American origins. To what extent did this vast propaganda apparatus sway Arab public opinion? Which ideas and actors shaped American public diplomacy in this period? What are the lessons for information strategy today?

This groundbreaking book tells the story of American propaganda campaigns in the Middle East after 9/11, drawing on in-depth interviews with key players and previously classified documents. Nathaniel Greenberg shows how the United States tried to control perceptions of its response to 9/11 through news and entertainment, and reveals that Arab governments and unofficial actors were involved-knowingly or not-in distributing US propaganda. He explores the institutions, strategy, and rhetoric deployed in the war on terror, placing them in the context of American and Soviet influence campaigns during the Cold War. Greenberg argues that US government-backed broadcasting laid the groundwork for global information warfare, such as the rise of competing Russian and Chinese state media operations. Shedding light on the ideological underpinnings of American propaganda in Arabic after 9/11, The Long War of Ideas offers new insight into soft power in the twenty-first century.

This volume offers a critical evaluation of China's programs and projects on the African continent, zooming in on: (a) whether China is preying on states and societies on the continent or, if indeed, she is a benevolent partner on the continent; (b) whether many of the projects are undeniably integral to the growth and development of the continent, or are mostly white elephant projects; (c) examine the cost-benefit of China's involvement on the continent economic and political space; and (d) why Euro-America countries complain about the role and place of China in Africa? Bringing together mostly African scholars, the research underlines the key pros and cons of China and the Chinese involvement in the continent.

Excavations at the famous Mawangdui tomb site in south-central China (early to mid-second century BCE) have unearthed many kinds of writing, including documents made of silk, wood, and bamboo as well as a wide range of inscribed artifacts. This book is an interdisciplinary study of these varied forms of writing, exploring the different roles that texts played in the lives and afterlives of Chinese elites during the Han dynasty.

Examining documents and artifacts from the Mawangdui tombs in comparative perspective, Luke Waring demonstrates that early Chinese writing should be understood as part of the material and visual cultures of its time. Written texts were used to do more than simply preserve and transmit important information: they were also work tasks, storage items, performance aids, apotropaic talismans, aesthetically pleasing patterns, display pieces, possessions, and burial objects. Writing was even integrated into older, perhaps more powerful modes of cultural expression such as ritual performance and material display. Waring argues that manuscripts and inscribed objects were always things, artifacts that had powerful effects on the world that created them. Comprehensively researched and lavishly illustrated, Writing and Materiality in Ancient China offers a new understanding of the textual cultures of the early Western Han.

Desert Imaginations traces the cultural and intellectual histories that have informed the prevalent ideas of deserts across the globe. The book argues that Saharanism-a globalizing imaginary that perceives desert spaces as empty, exploitable, and dangerous-has been at the center of all desert-focused enterprises. Encompassing spiritual practices, military thinking, sexual fantasies, experiential quests, extractive economies, and experimental schemes, among other projects, Saharanism has shaped the way deserts not only are constructed intellectually but are acted upon. From nuclear testing to border walls, and much more, Brahim El Guabli articulates some of Saharanism's consequential manifestations across different deserts. Desert Imaginations draws on the abundant historical literature and cultural output in multiple languages and across disciplines to delineate the parameters of Saharanism. Against Saharanism's powerful and reductive vision of deserts, the book rehabilitates a tradition of desert eco-care that has been at work in desert Indigenous people's literary, artistic, scholarly, and ritualistic practices.

This is the first book to apply the concept of good international citizenship to the international relations of the Global South. The edited book introduces good international citizenship as a theoretical framework for analysing a diversity of agencies across the Global South. It covers different cases of non-Western states, global governance, foreign policy, and international law, and examines how non-Western actors enact ideas of good international citizenship to engage and shape the global order. The book shows how good international citizenship is not limited to Western notions of liberal internationalism but also encompasses the efforts of non-Western actors to promote distinct approaches to ethics, morality, responsibility, and leadership. The book contributes theoretically and empirically to the field of non-Western International Relations. It allows for rethinking established International Relations concepts so that these become more inclusive to the histories and experiences of different actors across the globe.

The relentless bombardment and blockade on Gaza have not only drastically restricted the inflow of essential food supplies but have also led to a catastrophic humanitarian crisis with unprecedented casualties. The widespread destruction has crippled the ability of the population to grow and process food, leaving Gazans without sufficient access to basic nutrition and pushing them to the brink of famine. Building on the previous work of Dr. Hassoun on acute food insecurity and malnutrition in Gaza, this book addresses not only Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2-Zero Hunger, SDG 3-Good Health and Well-being, and SDG 6-Clean Water and Sanitation, but all seventeen SDGs. While brief reports have been published on the topic, this will be the first in-depth scholarly work, offering case studies, data-driven analysis from various fields, and a comprehensive examination of the multidimensional and devastating impacts of war.

With an urgent and multidisciplinary perspective, this book highlights the interconnectedness of war, sustainability, and global security, emphasizing how hostilities in Gaza have reversed progress toward achieving all SDGs, both in Gaza and beyond. Bringing together diverse expertise from 60 authors across 27 countries, the book showcases the international and interdisciplinary collaboration underlying its research. Through a series of carefully curated chapters written by specialists in various fields, it provides a comprehensive analysis of how war has affected societal structure, economic resilience, and environmental sustainability in Gaza.

For each issue addressed, the text offers strategic insights and practical measures aimed at mitigating damage and fostering resilience. This book serves as a critical resource for policymakers, researchers, humanitarian organizations, and anyone who is interested in understanding and addressing the complex dynamics of conflict and sustainability.
