Place and the Moving Image offers a rethinking of how experimental, essayistic film, engages with spatial knowledge and environmental awareness. At its heart is the concept of Moving Image Topography - a critical and artistic framework of thinking through the camera about the relationship between technological forms and place structures, and how these shape our experience of environments, including the natural, the built, and the lived.

Responding to urgent questions in eco-media and artistic research, Elisabeth Brun argues that place is not merely a setting or a backdrop, but a critical generative force in experimental film - a vital lens for understanding the eco-critical and epistemological potential of moving image arts and their modes of thinking. Through a rigorous and interdisciplinary approach that combines theory, close readings of essayist and materialist film practices, and artistic research in her sub-Arctic home village, Brun explores how the moving image can render visible the subtle dynamics between perception, environment, and technological mediation. Rather than separating theory and practice, this book shows how both emerge from the same topographical foundation.

At stake is not only how we understand film, but how we understand our own grounding - the inseparability of Earth's textures and human forms of experience, through which perspective itself can be (re)gained. Engaging scholars, artists, and practitioners- across fields such as film and media studies, visual art, design, architecture, and philosophy, this book will appeal to those interested in place, environmental aesthetics, indigenous perspectives, and critical film practice.

The experimental film 3xShapes of Home (2020) is central to this study and is included as a Routledge Support Material to this book.

This book examines the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the context of the global sport industry, and asks how sport business might be a factor in enabling positive social change.

Opening with a chapter that introduces the most significant sociological, managerial, and social psychological theories, models, and frameworks for understanding this important topic, this book then presents in-depth case studies from around the world that explore various dimensions where sport business and social issues intersect. Covering characteristics such as race, gender, sexual orientation, disability, and religious orientation, this book presents fascinating cases across a wide range of sports and international contexts - from women coaches in Nigeria and rodeo Cowboys of Color in Texas, to disability sport development in the Caribbean and allyship within German sport organizations.

Providing an important snapshot of global efforts to promote inclusion in and through sport, this book is a fascinating read for any student, researcher, policymaker, or practitioner with an interest in sport business and management, the sociology of sport, or social issues in wider society.

Ghosts in the Dating App Machine offers a critical examination of the shift to dating apps to illustrate key features of a broader shift to a mode of "data" colonialism based on datafication and AI orchestration.

This book analyses 48 in-depth and mediated interviews, forums, blogs, and official statements made by dating apps. It situates this transition within the broader culture of data colonialism through close readings of science fiction, suggesting the world has become like Us, where doppelgangers constituted from reprehensible proclivities have emerged as digital profiles reflected back to users through the horrific play of social media mirrors to govern their encounters against their wishes. These mirrors allow media companies to conduct surreptitious experiments on users' dispossessed desires, devise digital doppelgangers from those they disavow, and compel behaviors that are lucrative precisely because they are misaligned with humane values. Yet this horrific play of mirrors is not inevitable. By attending to the ghosts of colonialism unleashed by media companies through the approach developed in this book, it is still possible to galvanize the collective will to combat data colonialism and strive to create a world where love disentangled from colonial modes of desire is possible.

This study will interest scholars attempting to understand the rapidly evolving ecology of dating apps within the areas of digital media, media sociology, cultural studies, anthropology, and media and communication studies.

An in-depth history of Large Language Models and what their ubiquity, disruption, and creativity mean from a wider sociopolitical perspective. In November 2022, ChatGPT swept the globe with a mixed frenzy of excitement and anxiety. Was this a step closer to reaching singularity or just another marvel in machine learning? Author Stephan Raaijmakers provides a comprehensive introduction to Large Language Models (LLMs), describing what exactly they are capable of from a technical and creative standpoint. This concise volume covers everything from the architecture of LLM neural networks to the limitations of LLMs to how our governments can regulate this technology. In explaining how exactly LLMs learn from data sets, Raaijmakers defangs the more sensational arguments we may be familiar with. Instead, he offers a more grounded approach to how this groundbreaking and increasingly ubiquitous form of artificial intelligence will shape our society for years to come.

Founded in 1478 and not permanently abolished until 1834, the Spanish Inquisition has always been a notorious institution in history as an engine of religious and racial persecution. Yet, Spaniards themselves did not create its legal processes or its theoretical mission, which was to reconcile heretics to the Catholic Church. In this volume, leading international scholars assess the origins, legal practices, victims, reach, and failures of Spanish inquisitors across centuries and geographies. Grounded in recent scholarship and archival research, the chapters explore the Inquisition's medieval precedents as well as its turbulent foundation and eradication. The volume examines how inquisitors changed their targets over time, and how literal physical settings could affect their investigations and prosecutions. Contributors also demonstrate how deeply Spanish inquisitors cared about social status and legal privilege, and explore the scandals that could envelop inquisitors and their employees. In doing so, this volume offers a nuanced, contextual understanding of the Spanish Inquisition as a historical phenomenon.

The Order of the Hermits of St Augustine has long been sidelined as a pale imitator of the Franciscans. This book provides a fundamental cross-disciplinary re-evaluation of the lives, ideas, and impact of the Augustinian friars. By challenging the scholarly focus on the urban sphere in communal Italy, it explores the rapid emergence of Augustinian convents as lively religious and artistic centres on the margins of cities and in the Italian countryside. Moreover, it demonstrates for the first time the existence of common intellectual themes which linked together dispersed Augustinian communities. Fired by contemporary debates about the antiquity of the Order, the Augustinian friars forged a fictive past in which they linked their origins to St Augustine and late antique hermits. The book argues that saints, objects, and the natural environment all played a vital part in brokering the Augustinian ethos. This is underpinned by tracing the 'things' the Hermits commissioned, inherited, and accumulated to become the 'heirs of St Augustine'. Their forged antiquity was promoted not only through human agencies, such as the creation of eremitical saints' cults, but also through the strategic use of the liminal position of their convents, reinventing the Augustinian hermitages as places of power on the margins of the human sphere and the untamed natural environment. At stake here is the extent of religious patronage in the rural landscape and the re-evaluation of the long-standing tension between city and countryside in the medieval imaginary. Ultimately, this book not only challenges the prevailing understanding of the mendicant movement as a quintessentially urban phenomenon, but also sheds new light on broader processes of medieval societies in forging narratives of power, prestige, and antiquity through materiality and the natural environment.

This book is the first to take a close look at artificial intelligence and neuroenhancement in the context of sport, and at the potential of these new technologies to act as enablers of neurodoping. It considers the interesting possibilities that these technologies raise for enhancing athletic performance and explores their implications for the ethics, integrity and governance of sport.

Featuring the work of leading researchers in sports ethics, bioethics, digital ethics and biotechnology, the book draws on multidisciplinary perspectives from philosophy, education, biology, neuroscience and more to shine light on a technological development that is not yet listed as a prohibited method in the WADA anti-doping code. Exploring fascinating topics including neurostimulation, brainchips, cyborgization and the importance of establishing sound ethical regulations, the book takes a positive ethical view, seeing the lack of previous work in this area as an opportunity to embed ethics in sports technology and promote AI for good in sport.

This book is important reading for any advanced student, researcher, administrator or policy-maker with an interest in the ethics of sport, sport technology, sport governance, or artificial intelligence.

Using key case studies, they trace the evolution from early cyberspace concepts to current spatial computing technologies, offering insights into both historical context and future possibilities. The book addresses key questions about the opportunities and challenges presented by metaverse technologies, including issues of accessibility, creativity, and the future of humans and artificial intelligence co-existing, side by side, in digital spaces. It serves as a practical guide, equipping readers with the knowledge they need to navigate the future of urban life in virtual environments with a thought-provoking examination of how we might build, inhabit, and govern cities in the Metaverse.

The authors explore the concept of digital twins, demonstrating how these virtual replicas of physical spaces can revolutionise urban planning and management. They delve into the social aspects of the metaverse, examining how avatars shape our interactions and relationships in digital realms. Economic considerations are central to the book ethos, with an analysis of emerging models that often leverage blockchain technologies. The book addresses the challenges, potential pitfalls and ethical considerations in creating and inhabiting digital cities. At the same time, it takes a step back and examines already abandoned digital worlds, offering lessons from past attempts at creating virtual spaces.

Essential reading for urban planners, geographers, economists, technologists, policymakers, and anyone interested in the future of cities and digital interaction, Cities in the Metaverse provides a balanced, informed perspective on this rapidly evolving field.

Ethnomethodology and Conversation Analysis have made major inroads into the disciplines that make up the social sciences. Although commonly run together under the title of EMCA, what their relationship is to one another remains as elusive as the relationship between their respective founders, Harold Garfinkel and Harvey Sacks.

This book clarifies the nature of these relationships, demonstrating that Harvey Sacks' studies of the sequential organisation of conversation are the cardinal example of what Garfinkel described as an ethnomethodological alternate to traditional social science. However, over the decades that have passed since Garfinkel developed ethnomethodology, several confusions have arisen as to what he meant. The author argues that these have resulted in a blunting of Garfinkel's original intentions which compromise the adequacy of ethnomethodological description. In response, this book shows how Sacks' considerations of adequacy can ground ethnomethodology as a "natural observational science" that redirects it towards developing further coherent and precisely circumscribed bodies of work to those of Sacks' own coherent and precisely circumscribed studies.

It will appeal to both new and existing scholars of ethnomethodology and conversation analysis, as well as those with interests in social theory, methodology, and those who have taken up the relevance of conversation analysis for their research and are interested in the ethnomethodological heritage of conversation analysis.

How to build a flourishing society by using what we know about human nature to design our technology rather than let technology shape our society. In Shared Wisdom, Alex Pentland delves into the history of innovation, emphasizing the importance of understanding how technologies and cultural inventions impact human society. Humanity s great leaps forward the rise of civilizations, the Enlightenment, and the Scientific Revolution were all propelled by cultural inventions that accelerated our rate of innovation and built collective wisdom. Solving current global challenges such as climate change, pandemics, and failing social institutions will require similarly fundamental inventions. Shared Wisdom provides a unique perspective on human society and offers insights into how we can use technologies like digital media and AI to aid, rather than replace, our human capacity for deliberation. Drawing on his expertise in both social science and technology, the author bridges the gap between these two disciplines and offers a holistic view of the challenges and opportunities we face in the age of AI. By looking deep into our history, Pentland argues that the better we understand the key factors that accelerate cultural evolution, the greater our chances of surmounting our current problems.

Transnation: Identity and Mobility in Postcolonial Literature and Culture offers a fresh and thought-provoking exploration of transnationalism, focusing on the mobility of populations who may not physically leave their national borders, but whose potential for movement subtly challenges the power and authority of the state. Drawing from postcolonial studies, it examines how marginalized and colonized groups resist and navigate the systems of control imposed by the state - resistance that may be subtle, yet constant and potent. Through the concept of the transnation, Bill Ashcroft reveals how individuals and groups move while avoiding the restrictive practices of borders. It emphasizes the increasing global mobility and how all nations, whether their populations are moving or not, can be seen as transnations. The book provides a radical lens on mobility, showing how deeply it impacts nations and how it might pose a threat to traditional forms of control. The work covers critical themes such as: nations, postnationalism, and the transnation; the space of the transnation; borders and bordering practices; the subjects of the transnation; the transnation and the city; and the porosity of borders in the works of Rushdie and Ghosh. An ideal resource for scholars and students of global movement, migration, literary studies, postcolonial studies, and transnational studies, this book provides a unique perspective on how people move within and across the boundaries of nation-states in an increasingly interconnected world. This book will be of great use to scholars and students investigating the increase in global movement.

How the sound of the female playback voice impacts Bollywood's cultural, musical, and cinematic environment.

Drawing on sound studies and performance theory, scholar Shikha Jhingan explores the discursive nature of the female playback voice in Bombay film songs. Mapping the production, circulation, and reception of the voices of singing stars-notably Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle-Jhingan situates the singing voice as a cinematic object with limitless possibilities of distribution and dispersal. She employs the perspectives of a diverse range of listeners across a vast media landscape to illustrate how the affective charge of the female playback voice, combined with developments in audio technology, has led to a gradual expansion of opportunities for women in film, popular music, and media and audio production. With nuanced exploration of the way the human voice becomes intertwined with devices such as the microphone, radio, cassettes, and digital technologies, Jhingan argues for the sonic excess of the female voice beyond the narrative and visual. The Female Playback in Bombay Cinema is an authoritative addition to the field of sound studies with implications for gender studies, performance studies, and cinema studies.

Marie-Dominique Chenu demonstrates how this once condemned theologian influenced the major shifts of twentieth-century Catholicism and reveals the relevance of his thought for contemporary theology.

In 1942, historian Marie-Dominique Chenu was removed from his teaching position at Le Saulchoir, the French Dominican school of theology, and his groundbreaking new publication was placed on the Catholic Church's Index of Forbidden Books. Yet only two decades later, the Catholic hierarchy embraced many of his ideas at the Second Vatican Council. Although Chenu's pioneering work helped to usher in a new era, his influence on the Catholic Church remains overlooked and underexplored.

Drawing upon extensive new archival research, Mary Kate Holman provides a captivating account of Chenu's life and how his theology contributed to the church's opening to the modern world and shaped the next generation of theologians. Holman presents the distinctive elements of Chenu's theology, identifies his major contributions to contemporary Catholic theology, and proposes a constructive retrieval of his thought for a renewed ecclesiology in the twenty-first century.

Intersectional Activism in Environmental Communication explores the representation of environmental activism around the world. Exploring issues from Indigenous women's activism in Brazil and India to energy protests in South Korea, to the Dakota Access pipeline construction on Standing Rock Sioux territory, to the contours of the internet, this collection offers critical reflection points for the representation of environmental activism and theorizes the various channels and audiences for embodied and mediated environmental communication. The intersectional approach reflected in this work explores circumstances where powerful interests distract, dissuade, and undermine emergent voices and the ecological values they articulate. This volume addresses how intersectional environmental activism can effectively challenge systems and practices that perpetuate ecological degradation and environmental injustices.

Like biological species and languages, many musical and other cultural practices around the world are at risk. In some cases, the threat to their future is due to social inequalities or injustices that impinge upon people's capacity to engage in vibrant cultural lives of their choosing, such as assimilation policies, systemic land dispossession, forced displacement, or erasure of certain cultures in education. In Sounding Good, author Catherine Grant joins artist-researcher collaborators from across five continents to explore the deep and sometimes surprising interplays between music, cultural sustainability, and matters of social justice. In Cambodia, a "magic music bus" chugs through rural provinces, joyfully returning traditional music to people and places from which it has nearly disappeared. In a refugee camp in the harsh Algerian desert, people come together to sing old and new songs about everyday life in the camps, their nostalgia for their Western Saharan homeland, and their hopes for the future. In a university class in Brazil, students learn songs, dances, and stories from a senior Indigenous culture-bearer--the first time these cultural practices have been welcomed into formal tertiary education. Through these cases, and others from Vanuatu, India, and Australia, Sounding Good demonstrates how strong and sustainable cultural practices can advance the cause of social justice, and vice versa. Traversing a range of pressing contemporary social concerns--from forced migration, educational equity, and poverty to matters of racial, cultural, and climate justice--Grant contends that music can help us better understand the ways that cultural sustainability and social justice are entangled. Not only will this understanding help musicians, communities, scholars, and cultural agencies in local and global efforts to protect and promote the rich diversity of musical practices around the world, but it will also enhance our prospects of an equitable and thriving world, now and into the future. Transcultural Exchange through Art provides an exploration of two countries and their capital cities, two regions and their growing cultural engagement with one another, soft and hard power and their impact on the arts, multiculturalism, museums, globalization, cosmopolitanism and postcoloniality.

Drawing on the author's experiences of working in Kenya and living in South Korea, as well as interviews with artists, curators and other practitioners, the book demonstrates that experiencing "otherness" through the imaginative engagement of art can cultivate appreciation of cultural diversity. Various case studies from Nairobi and Seoul are analyzed to unpack narratives about nation, self and other through the cultural and creative industries. By focusing on two non-Western regional capitals whose urban contemporary development is affected by their colonial pasts, the book explores the larger dynamics of postcolonial nation building and the formulation of cultural identities in the face of rapid economic development and demographic changes. The issues identified in the study are linked to wider debates concerning the role of the arts and art museums in relation to migration, globalization and multiculturalism.

Transcultural Exchange through Art will be of great interest to academics and practitioners working in the cultural and creative industries, museum and curatorial studies, visual culture studies, African studies and Asian studies. The book transcends disciplinary boundaries and relates academic research to pragmatic issues such as diversity and inclusion in public cultural spaces.

The local priest was the most ubiquitous embodiment of the Church for many people in medieval Christian Europe. By centring this key figure in post-Carolingian Europe, this book provides a fresh perspective on the transition between two focuses of historiographical attention, the Carolingian reform and the Gregorian reform. This pivot away from Church elites such as popes, bishops and abbots, and the institutional structures of dioceses and parishes, sheds light on new lines of continuity and moments of transformation, examining the resources and kinship ties of local priests and assessing their relationship with the bishop at both the collective and the individual level. It draws on a variety of methodologies and forms of evidence, ranging from the detailed study of specific manuscripts to wide-ranging overviews of liturgical and documentary evidence. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.

Provocative, interdisciplinary, and daringly critical, AI for Critical Interculturality doesn't spoon-feed ready-made answers but rather inspires readers to think, question and interrogate interculturality alongside AI.
In a world where AI is often feared as a threat to human intelligence and creativity, the book flips the script by positioning AI as a valuable partner in the study of interculturality as both a scientific and educational notion. How could AI help us dismantle biases, interrogate knowledge production/dissemination and foster deeper self-reflexivity in the broad field of Intercultural Communication Education and Research? What happens when we treat AI not as a passive tool but as an active interlocutor - one that mirrors our ideological blind spots and pushes us toward sharper criticality and reflexivity? Through rich theoretical and conceptual insights, real-world cases and interactive activities, this book equips readers to unmask ideologies in AI-generated knowledge about interculturality; leverage AI as a mirror to expose and confront personal and systemic biases; consider some language stratagems to disrupt linguistic norms in human-AI dialogue. More importantly, the author asks us to forge an ethical and non-utilitarian partnership with AI.
This boundary-shattering work invites students, educators and researchers of interculturality to envision and co-create the future of intercultural studies.

Life in Canada is shaped by the seasons - marked, celebrated, enjoyed, and sometimes dreaded in ways that respond directly to the changing cycles in nature. Sociological thinking encourages us to question the aspects of everyday life that we may otherwise take for granted.
Seasonal Sociology takes a sociological approach to thinking about the seasons, providing a unique perspective for understanding social life. Each chapter in this collection explores key issues of sociological interest through the passage of time and seasonal change. The authors wield seasonality as a powerful tool that can bridge small-scale interpersonal interactions with large-scale institutional structures.
This collection of contemporary Canadian case studies is wide-ranging and analyses topics such as pumpkin spice lattes, policing in schools, law and colonialism, summer cottages, seasonal affective disorder, Vaisakhi celebrations, and more. The second edition introduces new chapters on Labour Day and organized labour, disability and online dating, maple sugar shacks, seasonal agricultural work, wildfires, and social movements like Pride and Black Lives Matter. Seasonal Sociology ultimately offers fresh, provocative ways of thinking about the nature of our collective lives.

The Routledge Handbook of Heritage and Creative Practice explores the role of creativity as a tool for critical engagement with heritage. It provides a comprehensive study of ways in which heritage and creative practice intersect, in research, in practice and in a transnational context.

This book introduces researchers, students, creative and heritage practitioners to contemporary practices from a breadth of perspectives. The transnational nature of its scope is key to the exploration of how 'heritage' and 'creativity' are ever evolving, conceived of differently in different contexts, and intersect in interesting ways through the work of creative practitioners. The volume argues that heritage itself is a creative practice, such that the 'creative' work that occurs in these examples is not singular and distinct; rather the symbiotic reciprocity between heritage and creativity is intersectional and embedded. The international array of authors and differing approaches from around the world, including case studies from Africa, Bahrain, Brazil, Caribbean, Columbia, China, Hong Kong, Iraq, Japan, Kuwait, Mexico, Oman, Qatar, United Kingdom and United Arab Emirates provide a global approach to the subject, while the diverse range of topics covered, including urban renewal, the coronavirus pandemic, memorial culture, public art and colonial heritage, allows readers to gain insight into the richness of practices across a diversity of disciplines and contexts.

This volume offers a significant and new contribution to heritage studies that will be of interest to scholars and students in heritage and museum studies, as well those in the fields of art, architecture, anthropology, design, digital and curatorial studies. It also provides a valuable resource for artists, arts professionals, architects and museums and heritage practitioners.
