Vacant Land Regeneration: Novel Strategies for Maximizing Local Impact provides readers with a comprehensive understanding of vacant land regeneration through the lens of influential research, groundbreaking case studies, and future trends, and equips readers with the knowledge needed to transform vacant spaces into valuable community assets. In a rapidly evolving world, regenerating vacant and abandoned urban land has become a critical challenge, affecting not only shrinking cities but also growing regions where some neighborhoods are in decline. Globally, nearly 150 large cities are already shrinking as a result of depopulation, post-industrial shifts, and poor land management practices. As cities confront this growing issue, a significant shift in urban development approaches is emerging, one that moves away from an exclusive focus on growth and instead prioritizes quality of life, sustainability, and resilience. The book is structured into four key sections, each reflecting a major area of research and practice in vacant land regeneration: urban policy and classifications, ecosystem services and resilience, remediation and public health, and community engagement. With insights from key researchers and urban planners, this book inspires a transformative approach to urban development, one that fosters healthier, greener, and more resilient cities. It is an essential resource for both scholars and practitioners in the field of urban regeneration.

Faced with the global crisis of human-caused environmental harm, this eloquently written text explores the connection between our individual virtues and vices and those of larger groups, such as societies, nations, and businesses. It demonstrates how this huge collective crisis is our moral problem as individuals, and what we can do about it, together.
The book sheds light on the notion of collective character and investigates the relationship between the way we are individually and the way we are together. Drawing on research from the social sciences, it demonstrates a close correlation between our individual and collective character, highlighting the scope of our influence on others, and suggests socially possible pathways toward a fair way of life in harmony with nature and community. To implement this, Clowney argues that we must change the current extractive and wasteful methods of business, economic growth, consumption, and capitalism. Initial chapters delve into our connection to those systems and consider how these can be transformed over time, followed by seven stories exemplifying the changes required, and chapters on several environmental virtues in their individual and collective form. The book concludes with a meditation on the virtues of faith, hope, and love, which the author puts forward as grounded in many traditions, and necessary to sustain the work of environmental change.
Environmental Ethics and our Collective Character will be an important discussion text for students, academics, and instructors in the field of environmental virtue ethics, virtue ethics more broadly, business ethics, political and social philosophy, and environmental and policy studies.

This book examines the concept of quality from a social perspective. Using the example of public spaces, it demonstrates the analytical and practical benefits that can be gained from an experience-based approach to defining quality.
Sociology and related social sciences have rarely explored the quality of spaces, despite qualities being social products. This has led to a clear research gap in understanding spatial quality within social theory. Addressing this gap, this book examines public space quality through a cultural-spatial lens, accounting for the complexity of polycontexturalization, which implies the increasing entanglement of social actions in multiple contexts and spatialities, as well as the materiality of spatial arrangements. Moreover, it introduces the sociologically useful distinction between Erfahrung (reflective experience) and Erlebnis (lived experience) into the analysis of spatial quality. The book's concept is based on the idea that social experience comprises multiple logics. It is shown that the quality of public space is driven by three distinct logics: The logic of expression, evident in individuals' drive for social integration; the logic of strategy, viewing public space as a competitive arena; and finally, the logic of subjectivation, which examines how spaces shape subjectivities and are subject to refiguration.
The book targets both researchers and students in sociology, anthropology, political science, architecture, and urban planning. It also serves as a practical toolbox for professionals in architecture and planning focused on creating more socially acceptable public spaces.

This book offers a thought-provoking defence of social science - and particularly the discipline of sociology - and its relevance for 21st-century challenges to democratic societies.
The author shows how social science holds a unique and critical role: namely, to act as modernity's critical conscience by scrutinizing power relations and unmasking attempts to trivialize social reality. They do so by revisiting several classic texts in social science, demonstrating their timeless relevance for understanding society and the role of knowledge, and relating them to contemporary issues and debates. Although often depicted as having limitations compared to "hard" sciences, the book argues that the methodologies used in social science enables it to act as modernity's critical conscience by embracing the essential qualitative and critical view that is its true essence. Contemporary calls for making social science relevant to society should be met by staying true to this approach and thus remain relevant rather than attempting to become relevant. In this way, social science can contribute to countering political polarization, "knowledge resistance," trivialization, and other contemporary threats to democratic society, with the author ultimately advocating for a revitalization and institutionalization of social science's mechanisms for self-reflection to the broader and deeper benefit of society.
A beautifully written, wide-ranging, and appealing explanation of what the social sciences, and sociology in particular, could, and should be, it will be of equal interest to professors and graduate students as to undergraduate students studying introductory modules to sociology.

Modelling Social Housing delves into the intricate relationship between everyday social life and the architectural landscapes of social housing across European cities.
Focusing on social housing across multiple temporal and socio-cultural European urban settings, this book traces how the confluence of distributed knowledges, technological resources, and architectural histories may have considerable effects across different scales, ranging from everyday interactions to welfare planning and economic policies. To capture these intricate socio-spatial relations, this book introduces the concept of 'social urban modelling' as a novel analytical approach to social housing research. Spanning historical trajectories, contemporary challenges, and future potentials, this book brings together scholars from diverse fields including architecture, history, anthropology, sociology, geography, and art history. Through examinations of architectural designs, urban planning assemblages, contemporary redevelopment projects, and everyday appropriations by residents, this book unveils the intricate layers of social housing dynamics in European cities. From the adoption of Mediterranean and Islamic architectural typologies in mid-twentieth century Denmark to the innovative bureaucratic structures of the London County Council in post-war Britain, each chapter provides new insights into the spatial and social transformations of European social housing. Through empirical cases from across Europe, we ask: How might resident-driven initiatives reshape urban landscapes? What are the implications of densification processes on social housing estates? And how do private investors influence the social fabric of these communities?
With its timely interdisciplinary exploration of the modelling capacities of social housing estates, this book will provide an indispensable resource for scholars, practitioners, and policymakers engaged in housing studies, urban development, and architectural history.

Critical Communication Research with Global Inclusivity provides a critical lens through which to prepare, engage and read communication research methods.
Inviting new and innovative perspectives that question the status quo and push the boundaries of knowledge production, the book begins with the premise of global inclusivity, intentionally correcting the power imbalance of research conducted by those in areas of privilege against those in conditions of marginality. Building on emerging research on and from the Global South, this book echoes a growing need to interested students and scholars, not only to advance the subject of this work, but also to strengthen communication scholarship overall. Inspired by knowledge formed through feminist, critical and postcolonial perspectives, the book questions the imbalance of our knowledge production and suggests avenues for improvement.
Accompanying scholars in their negotiating processes to conduct research in non-Western contexts and supporting graduate and postgraduate students in research that does not conform to the standards developed in Western academic cultures, this volume will be of interest to those working in intercultural communication, interpersonal communication, research methods in communication, critical communication studies and journalism, as well as those from adjacent fields such as political studies, anthropology, sociology and area studies.

British Militarism, Sport, Remembrance: "Support the Troops" critically explores the complex and evolving relationship between sport and militarism in the UK, offering an in-depth analysis of how political power and ideological narratives are constructed and contested through this nexus.
Framed around a clear thematic arc spanning power, politics, media representation, sociological interpretation, and ideological paradox, the book provides the first comprehensive resource on the sport-military connection in a British context. Drawing from a wide range of examples, it examines how sport is routinely employed to generate public support for the military, particularly through campaigns and rituals linked to national remembrance and troop appreciation. Each chapter builds on the last: from unpacking the political dimensions of militarism and sport, to analysing the ideological weight of UK remembrance culture, to demonstrating how deeply embedded military support narratives are within sporting institutions. Ultimately, the book reveals how these narratives function in public life and media and exposes the ideological reality of the overarching "support the troops" orthodoxy embedded in everyday life in the UK.
This book will be useful for students, scholars, and researchers in the fields of sociology, political science, sport studies, cultural studies, and media studies, as well as policymakers and those working in the military or sport sectors who seek a deeper understanding of the ideological role of sport in shaping public perceptions of the military in the UK.

The European continent has given rise to the greatest number of spatial divisions. Its limits have provoked numerous debates, both within and outside of the continent. The European Union, for its part, has become a laboratory for the production of divisions.
Each of these divisions, a vector of identity and territoriality, reflects an intentionality, as revealed in Mapping the Spatial Divisions of Europe. The book shows the multiplicity of forms and modalities of these divisions and the actors who produce, use and question them in a globalized, and reticular world.
From the continent as a whole to the individual regions via metropolitan areas and their networks, from meshing to zoning, from regionalization to representations, this book explores how these divisions are used to govern, plan, imagine and build European territories beyond the heritage of states and their borders. The chapters shed new light on the theoretical and practical issues involved in carving Europe on different time and space scales.

This book explores the constituent dimensions of the so-called smart city from two singular angles: the new uses stimulated by innovations and the needs that these innovations fill (mobility, food, culture, tourism, housing, etc.).
Based on research carried out by the CitUs International Chair in collaboration with the cities of Montpellier and Montreal, The Smart and Resilient City explores the impact of digital, ecological and social transformations on urban management and the lives of city dwellers. It provides essential and engaging reading for the academic community in cities in transition, helping public and private decision-makers to develop new territorial projects that combine innovation with individual and collective well-being.

Drawing on the work of Foucault, Deleuze, and Latour, this book opens up a poststructuralist approach to sport, exercise, and dance research. It examines how to incorporate both articulable expression and visible material elements - theoretically and methodologically - to study the force of the moving body in practice.
This book employs critical concepts including the dispositive, assemblage, and actor network to interrogate and advance our understanding of theory and method in research of physical activity practice. It asks what a poststructuralist approach might mean, especially as it concerns themes such as the body in motion, physical activity practice, network of relations, knowledge, and power for physical cultural studies scholars. Presenting in-depth case studies of adult ballet, Barre, Pilates, coaching, ice-hockey, and cross-country running, this book also examines how researchers and practitioners can begin to collaborate to create innovative instruction, training, and coaching practices.
This is a fascinating reading for advanced students and researchers working in the physical cultural studies, sociology of sport and exercise, sociology of the body, sports coaching, physical education, or social theory.

Posthuman Social Science and Computational Culture offers theoretical and practical insight into posthuman social science research methods, addressing new challenges in computational culture. Philosophy and theory from media studies, software studies, and science and technology studies (STS) are used to make sense of cultural trends and empirical experiments.
This book explores new empiricisms in posthuman social science, with particular attention to computational culture and digital life. This book carefully treats key philosophical thinkers such as Karen Barad, Rosie Braidotti, Gilles Deleuze, Edouard Glissant, Bruno Latour, and Gilbert Simondon, and explains how these theorists help make sense of our current social and material conditions. Essays explore difficult questions for contemporary social science researchers: How should we understand computability and its limits? What is the nature of digital relationality? In what sense are software instruments useful in studying political ecologies? How do sensory and affective atmospheres become robust learning environments? When do arts-based and surrealist experiments have impact? Can mapping experiments help disrupt oppressive spatial regimes where control dominates? Why might we affirm the speculative practices of both science and fiction, as part of a post-colonial Anthropocene epistemology? What differentiates human and machine cognitive behavior? Ideas from many current media theorists in software and cultural studies are taken up and applied, including the work of Louise Amoore, Matthew Fuller, Alexander Galloway, Mark Hansen, Kara Keeling, Achille Mbembe, and Luciana Parisi.
This book will be of interest to graduate students and researchers in the social sciences and humanities (education, social work, sociology, anthropology, media studies, feminist studies), who are interested in the power of theory and philosophy, and are designing empirical experiments to investigate the complex ways that computation and digital technology are changing our lives and our sense of how and why we do 'social' research.

This book describes 'whole onflow' which is, at once, the emergence and becoming of the entirety of the world/universe and any actual, unique position whatsoever in it 'now'. A physical plane and self-organizing process that owes its energy to the Big Bang; in our region, it now unfolding the infinitely complex and varied world we engage, contribute to and experience.
There have been many academic ideas on the nature of emergence and becoming in the world, including ideas on the world's overall emergence and becoming. In this book, we extend some of these ideas to conceptualize a physical plane incorporating all possible positions and local variability - all geographies - what we refer to as 'whole onflow'. We answer some key questions including: What is the processual nature of whole onflow through which the world emerges and becomes in the moment? How might thinking in terms of whole onflow expand our ideas on the world's productions from health, to ageing to capitalism and beyond? How might this help us get to grips with today's kinetic, energy-dependent, multi-textured, and process-ignorant world? The book lays out the broad theoretical landscape. It demonstrates how principles and processes established by physics and cosmology might be combined with principles and processes conveyed by social theory to describe the world in whole onflow.
Dealing then with the very origins of all that is, and all that is social, the book is core reading for social scientists who like to think fundamentally. It is very much a speculative and provocative piece, but a necessary one, and will be of particular interest to those studying the world through poststructuralist, posthumanist, new materialist and non-representational theoretical lenses. Moving forward, certain scholars might follow the specific points of departure and pathways the book signposts. Others might choose to tread the new ground the book opens up in their own ways.

City, Public Space, and Body offers a timely and interdisciplinary examination of how bodies experience, shape, and are shaped by urban life, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Bringing together contributions from scholars, artists, and practitioners across diverse geographies, the book explores the entangled relationships between urban space, embodiment, and publicness through a variety of methodological lenses including ethnography, visual and performative arts, and critical urban theory. The book highlights underexplored themes such as gendered vulnerability, spatial justice, post-pandemic public space, and marginalized urban bodies in both Global North and Global South contexts. By focusing on lived experience and embodied methodologies, the book challenges dominant urban narratives and contributes fresh perspectives on space, care, power, and resistance. It will benefit readers seeking to rethink cities not merely as physical or functional entities, but as affective and contested terrains of social life.
Designed for researchers, students, and professionals in urban studies, sociology, planning, architecture, gender studies, and cultural geography, this collection foregrounds the bodily and sensory dimensions of urban encounters, spatial politics, and everyday life.

Once dismissed as "tragedy," the commons have been making a comeback. Amid intensifying social and environmental injustices in neoliberal regimes, scholars and activists have turned to the commons - historically, the shared ownership of land - as a way to express more just ways of living within and against the grasp of capitalism. Resurgent Commons reframes the commons by foregrounding relations of care and socio-ecological reproduction, while questioning anthropocentric formulations that would render the commons a set of available resources and the product of human cooperation. Interdisciplinary in nature, Tola's book troubles universalist accounts of the commons by unearthing its ambivalent role in European colonial histories marked by racial and sexual violence and environmental destruction.
As central case studies, the book considers contemporary political projects that enact feminist, anti-racist and more-than-human practices of urban commoning in Rome, a sprawling built environment in the European South that is also a city of ruins. From transfeminist commons to struggles for repairing areas where industrial ruins and recalcitrant natures coexist, to encounters with indigenous perspectives from the Americas, resurgent commons enact forms of life that are at odds with dominant regimes of property and governance. The book shows how a reconsideration of a supposedly obsolete mode of shared ownership can enable new modes of inhabiting the earth.

This book explores how social and political life are decisively shaped by unconscious linguistic operations and practical bodily experiences, rather than exclusively by rationality and consciously crafted arguments.
It demonstrates that frequently, the description of social players as rational beings fails to explain crucial dimensions of contemporary societies. Instead, this book develops a new theory that bases sociological explanation on cognition, including human abilities such as perception, memory, creativity, and intuition. It does so by examining various cases pertaining to the governance and ownership of biomedical technologies such as neuroimaging software, 3D bioprinting, and COVID-19 vaccines. This innovative theoretical approach, which promotes a dialogue between sociology and cognitive linguistics, is subsequently aimed at explaining new processes marking contemporary society, which may include the revival of fascist ideologies, the diffusion of scientific denialism, and the consistent inability to tackle problems such as global warming.
The book thus presents a conceptually and theoretically rigorous account of how and why it is key to grasp the cognitive basis of societies, revealing how they are decisively grounded on bodily experiences and linguistic operations such as metaphors, metonymies, semantic frames, and myths. It will therefore appeal to a wide range of scholars and researchers with interests in sociolinguistics, cognitive sociology, semiotics, biomedical technologies, political economy, social theory, applied linguistics, bioethics, and the sociology of science and technology.

Silence and Society addresses the reality that social sciences have ignored the importance of silence in human communication. Without communication, there is no community and thus no society. Yet, as classic communication theory explains, communication must always deal with noise. Increasingly, as cyber-technologies and media have gained the upper hand in social life, so have they become purveyors of empty noise-from mindless sitcom television to uninformed talk radio to cable news blather and more.
The book is organized into three sections, each corresponding to a level of social order. Each bears a distinctive relation to the general problem of silence and noise in human community. "Part One: Social Facts of Silence" presents examples of the ways silence intrudes on vital aspects of human life: in personal self-understanding, in the irony that direction communication requires a third absent party (such as Goffman's ego identity), in the fact that personal identity is the challenge of dealing with the trouble of deciding who we are in a given social setting. "Part Two: Noise, Dreams, and Identity Confusions" considers a range of community issues from the strange noises of quiet neighborhoods to the way the necessity of social conformity silences individual autonomy, to the fact that the dead are ever present in daily language and behavior, especially in common religious practices. Finally, "Part Three: Waste, Death, and the Beyond of Time" suggests the principal ways the growing global environment aggravates human inequality-by forcing the poor into zones of exclusion, by increasing the mountain of human waste that in turn wastes human lives, by the extent to which global theories and programs for economic development are little more

Critical Voices in Library and Information Work presents 25 profiles of notable, transformational library and information science (LIS) workers in the United States, Canada, and the UK, all of whom are involved in progressive library and information work projects or research endeavors.
Discussing a piece of literature, art, or music that helped direct their path into socially conscious library work and that continues to inspire them, interviewees provide insights into their work and the current state of critical librarianship. They also reflect upon the current state of institutions, including academic, public, and school libraries, as well as special libraries. The authors of the book present these conversations in a narrative form that situates their subjects' professional work within their broader historical and cultural milieu, while carefully supplementing the conversations with real-world information and context. The resulting collection gives insight into what grounds and inspires influential LIS professionals and highlights the diversity found in critical librarianship as one of its greatest strengths. Together, the professionals' voices provide the reader with a better understanding of what drives their peers' transformational LIS work.
Critical Voices in Library and Information Work presents the voices of professionals who hail from traditional and non-traditional information environments and who have varying levels of experience. The book will appeal to practicing library workers and information professionals, as well as students and academics engaged in the study of LIS.

This book offers a compelling look at how television censorship in China works not just as top-down control but as interactions between state, industry, and viewers.
As a historical study of the discourse on Chinese television censorship, it analyses debates around the censorship of popular television dramas in China and explores the controversies surrounding the televisual representation of history, violence, delinquency, and vulgarisation. Focusing on the idea of "worrying about the audience", the book shows how concerns about young people's morality, social responsibility, and cultural standards shape what (dis)appears on screen. Covering the early reform period to the 2010s, case studies include but are not limited to foreign action series (Garrison's Gorillas), domestic melodramas (Yearnings), controversial historical dramas (Towards the Republic), Gangtai pop idol dramas (Meteor Garden), and playful wuxia comedies (My Own Swordsman). Each case reveals how censors, producers, and critics invoke imagined audiences-whether impressionable youth or patriotic citizens-to justify cutting or promoting content. By treating audiences as constructed categories rather than immutable groups, the book moves beyond seeing censorship as repression. Instead, it demonstrates how a refreshing take on censorship can shed light on the generation of new content, revive overlooked titles, and frame broader debates about culture, anxieties, and geopolitics. Drawing on regulatory documents, press reports, interviews, audience letters, and parents' complaints, the book compares both popular hits and hidden gems, demonstrating how the discourse on melodrama, history, and martial arts genres reflects moral and commercial pressures in postsocialist China.
In contributing to the burgeoning field of censorship studies which rethinks censorship as productive, rather than reductive, The Chinese Censorship Discourse on Television Dramas will be of huge interest to scholars and students of television studies, popular culture, censorship studies, Chinese studies, media studies, cultural studies, memory studies, social history, and politics.

Under Kim Jong Un, North Korea has undertaken significant efforts to elevate the standard of living for its citizens. This shift has led to notable advancements in production and the quality of visual media, teaching North Koreans the "language" of consumerism and new methods of consumption. In Rebranding North Korea, Immanuel Kim delves into the implications of a thoroughly modernized North Korea for its citizens and the world as the country strives to participate in global modernity and technological advancements.
Kim traces two parallel trajectories illustrating the most significant changes in North Korean consumer culture: the expansion of modern urban development projects and increased social amenities, alongside the technologically advanced aesthetic qualities of visual media. These changes reveal the transition from the politics-centric society of the Kim Jong Il regime to the consumer-centric one under Kim Jong Un. The country's revamping of visual culture-as seen in the move from celluloid to digital formats, improved filmmaking techniques, advanced editing, drone usage, and artistic photographic renditions, coupled with an emphasis on digital literacy-highlights North Korea's attempts to educate itself and rebrand the DPRK. Its revamped cityscapes, gentrified living conditions, fashionable consumer goods, and transformed film and television industries signal a strong and stable economy where citizens are not just getting by but actively customizing their consumerist lifestyles according to the images portrayed in visual media.

This book enters a larger debate about storytelling's impact around the world in the digital age. Singapore's storytelling state functions within a global network of performing memory with new media. Its origins can be traced to popular American models of oral history-telling as seen in StoryCorps and Humans of New York, with their techniques appropriated for a Singaporean audience. Yet, even when well-intentioned, the claims of such projects of giving voice to the non-elite and the marginalized can be undermined by injurious effects that are not unique to the Singaporean context. At the same time, the embodied and emotional nature of these performances make the absolute control of meaning difficult. Often, they reveal more than they should, transgressing the normative demands of the storytelling state. At stake here are performances of identity, mobility, and belonging. When the national stage is set for life itself, what does it mean to have a life?

After the fall of the Marcos regime in 1986, the Philippines became the first country in Asia to codify Indigenous rights. This hard-fought reform aimed to protect the ancestral lands of the archipelago's remaining Indigenous communities. Since then, these communities have become increasingly embroiled in resource politics and many have found that claiming their rights does as much to facilitate their dispossession as it does to prevent it. In A Forest of Dreams, Noah Theriault examines the entanglement of capitalism, conservation, and indigeneity in southern Palawan, a place widely coveted as the Philippines's "last frontier." Drawing on a decade of research, Theriault reveals how bureaucrats, investors, and conservationists impose their own designs on Indigenous rights as they vie for land, labor, and legitimacy. But he also asks how those designs collide with the dreams-both figurative and literal-of Indigenous persons themselves. What results is a story of unexpected agency and contingency, in which humans, wildlife, and powerful forest beings complicate prevailing theories of social and environmental change.
A Forest of Dreams traces how Palawan families understand and influence the powerful forces that have enclosed them within an ancestral domain, a protected landscape, and an expanding plantation zone. Each chapter opens with a memorable historical or ethnographic episode: Magellan's fateful battle with Lapu-Lapu; the primitivist visions of Charles Lindbergh; a screeching civet and truckloads of tree-planting college students; oneiric owl sorcery; and a bitter dispute over almaciga resin. Informed by Palawan analyses of their own history, Theriault argues that efforts to "save the last frontier" have reinforced, rather than disrupted, long-term processes of colonization and capitalist expansion. Yet, he also shows how studies of the environment, development, and human rights in Southeast Asia can better account for the critical agency of those whose lands are at stake.
