Offering the first book-length analysis of the ways in which exclusion affects the lives and educational experiences of refugees with disabilities, this book examines the right to inclusive education for displaced persons with disabilities, arguing for an intersectional approach to advancing social justice in education globally.
Effectively encountering twice the amount of discrimination, exclusion and inequality usually faced by those with either a disability or with refugee status, refugees with disabilities face particular challenges in accessing education. In looking to tackle these challenges and give voice to those at the centre of such experiences, this book offers cutting-edge and fundamentally global insights and practicable solutions on how schools and their communities might become more inclusive spaces for currently marginalized disabled refugees. Chapters theorize current language and terminology, and discuss concrete examples of inclusive practice along with tangible guidance for educators and professionals towards the development of inclusive educational practices, policies and cultures within educational institutions. Exclusion and inclusion are understood at the intersection of disability, forced displacement and education.
Featuring an international team of thought leaders, researchers, practitioners, and refugee and disability activists, the book will be of interest to scholars, practitioners and policymakers in the fields of inclusive and special education, migration, and social work and education more broadly. Undergraduate students engaged in studies that consider aspects of educational, social and global justice will also benefit from the volume.

This book rethinks the urban night through an interdisciplinary exploration of Venice's nighttime economies, social practices and cultural narratives. Interpreting nightscapes as lived, contested and imaginative spaces, the book introduces the 'genius noctis' - a critical lens for engaging with the identity of the nocturnal city.
Bridging Southern European perspectives with international night studies scholarship, local nightscapes emerge as complex geographical phenomena, resulting from the dynamic interplay of historical and contemporary experiences. This inquiry considers the multiple interdependencies among dominant narratives and alternative understandings while emphasising the roles of darkness in shaping local nightlife ecosystems and urban identities. Aiming at providing hybrid and creative methodologies for the study of urban nights, the analysis interweaves cultural geography, urban studies and literary theory.
This book resonates with researchers and students across cultural geography, urban studies, mobility studies, anthropology and environmental humanities - particularly those investigating nightscapes, Mediterranean urban cultures or interdisciplinary place-based inquiry.

This book investigates the importance of spirituality in moral life. The author claims that modern secular morality suffers from a lack of spirituality and argues that a solution to this problem can be found in tradition.
Over several centuries, a process of secularization has loosened both the hold and the appeal of religion in the West. Morality did not dissipate, as many feared it would. This book is motivated by the idea that, nevertheless, something important was lost along the way. Arguing that a lack of spirituality has weakened secular moral life, the author seeks to identify an alternative source of spirituality that is not divine or supernatural. To this end, she considers three perspectives that offer potential sources of secular spirituality: Aristotelian humanism, which emphasizes nature; existentialist humanism, which emphasizes freedom and choice; and Confucian humanism, which emphasizes rituals. The author ultimately defends the view that traditions are intrinsically good as creations that elevate human nature through their customs, practices, and institutions. Further, she argues that the initiation into tradition is necessary to bring a person into the "space of reasons," which encompasses both moral and non-moral values. In consequence, traditions are appropriate objects of existential gratitude, which some theists hold to be the foundation of religious experience. Thus, it is possible to infuse secular moral life with spirituality by reawakening a love for the traditions in which it is already embedded.
Goodness and Tradition will appeal to scholars and graduate students in ethics, metaethics, and moral psychology who are interested in questions of moral motivation and experience. It will also appeal to those who are interested in the role of religion in moral life, as well as philosophers who are interested in comparative approaches to Western and Chinese thought.

The rise of the Chinese internet has reconfigured digital culture around the world. From social media platforms such as WeChat and Douyin to utility platforms Didi and Eleme, the Chinese platform economy has shown a remarkable capacity to innovate and grow, incurring constraints as well as receiving protection from the Chinese state.
This is the first textbook to centre Chinese platforms in the transformation of the global internet. Offering an overview of the history, governance and social-political implications, the book shows how Chinese platforms are situated within the domestic political economy of China, and the external geopolitics and cross-border mobilities of capital, technology and populations. Topics covered include policy and governance, social media entertainment, e-commerce, digital labour, and the Chinese diaspora. Comparing and contrasting the Chinese platform ecology with its global counterpart, the book argues that, while Chinese platforms exhibit more effective economic and technological innovation and have strong cultural cachet, they are subject to a far greater degree of state oversight, including facilitation as well as correction and censorship.
Chinese Platforms is a required reading for students of Media and Communication Studies and China Studies, as well as those interested in the rise of digital China and the implications for the global platform society.

Designed to help journalists keep pace with the rapid evolution of deepfakes as well as integrate 'fake-checking' methods into their routine reporting practices, this book offers a concise and accessible guide for reporters navigating this evolving challenge.
This guide aims to assist journalists in understanding the complexities of deepfakes from a number of angles including philosophical, historical, technical, and methodological. Rather than approaching deepfakes as a 'journalistic apocalypse,' this book contextualises them in the larger historical practice of fact-checking and on a continuum of technological advances in image and video manipulation. Encouraging readers to view fact-checking as a multimodal process, it stresses the importance of combining philosophical and technical tools, especially ones based in epistemology and artifical intelligence (AI), in addition to the 'pavement pounding' essentials of good journalism. The book concludes with a chapter addressing how to explain deepfakes to a public progressively more concerned about the realities and consequences of AI and misinformation.
Fake-Checking serves as a practical reference for journalists and advanced media students who are increasingly required to identify and verify potential deepfakes and their future iterations.

Doing Academic Research is an accessible guide to research focusing on the social sciences, humanities, and business. It approaches research as a process, steering readers through the beginnings of topic choice through choosing methods, samples, and then sharing their results.
The book guides readers through six methods in detail (interviews, focus groups, surveys, textual analysis, content analysis, and critical discourse analysis), providing enough information to successfully choose and conduct each method. It also covers observational methods like ethnography, experiments, and meta-synthesis, explaining when and why a researcher might choose those methods. It then shows readers how to analyze both qualitative and quantitative data, with tips and tricks to make the process more intuitive, and concludes with a discussion of how to effectively write, present, and publish research. The chapters also include additional material, ranging from discussions of ethics connected to specific methods, suggestions on how to work effectively with libraries, and ways to use artificial intelligence tools in the process. A selection of online resources are also available with websites, videos, selected bibliographies, and other guides to deepen understanding of the content.
This book is perfect for both undergraduate and graduate students, as well as professional academics and researchers looking to expand into additional methods or refine their understanding and approach to the ones they currently use.

It's August 2015. After twenty-five years of archaeological research in a secluded cave overlooking the Rhone Valley in southern France, Ludovic Slimak uncovers the remains of a Neanderthal, frozen in time - a discovery that casts fresh light on a critical turning point in human history. Could these remains belong to one of the last Neanderthals? As scientists from around the world analyze the site, their findings disrupt everything we thought we knew about the final days of these ancient humans. This discovery takes us to the defining threshold when multiple human species, once coexisting in the same world, are wiped from history-leaving Homo sapiens as the sole human survivor.
Slimak takes the reader on an extraordinary journey of discovery that is both scientific and profoundly human, blending rigorous research with evocative storytelling. This breathtaking exploration of the past not only unearths the lost world of the Neanderthals but forces us to confront the unspoken question: is this how humanity dies?
A compelling narrative spanning millennia, The Last Neanderthal is both a groundbreaking scientific revelation and a profound reflection on the fragility of humanity and the threads that connect us to the distant past.

When most people hear the word 'witch', they immediately think of crones conspiring over a cauldron, a force of dark and vindictive power. But to hundreds of thousands across the world, being a witch is a living, everyday reality, much more varied than the fairytale image.
Witch Power follows Emma Quilty - herself a witch and an anthropologist - on an immersive journey into contemporary witchcraft, from Witchcamp retreats to 'red tent' menstrual events, Voodoo priestesses running ghost tours from their vans to TikTokers casting hexes on a viral scale.
Attentive to the history of witchcraft, she reveals the role power plays in how the figure of the witch has changed over time to suit the ever-present need to control and demonize women. Because to be a witch is to live in defiance of society's expectations and rules.
But while the witch is always castigated as a threat, Quilty finds that the witch is never alone: the witch is a survivor and a symbol of resistance. Ultimately, Witch Power is a provocation and an invitation to readers to experience with the author what it means to embrace witchiness and what witchy feminism could bring to your life.

Archaeology has long been entangled with nationalist and colonial narratives, shaping and reshaping identities through material culture. This book investigates the entanglement of archaeology with nationalism and its role in shaping Icelandic identity.
Drawing on four case studies, it examines archaeological remains, historical sources, and ethnological materials. It reveals how material culture has been used to reinforce nationalist narratives while also offering a framework to challenge them. By focusing on the intersection of materials, discourses, and histories, the book uncovers how archaeology has been implicated in a colonial-cum-nationalist rhetoric, influencing modern interpretations of the past. It also highlights how the field can be used to deconstruct entrenched national myths and open up new avenues of enquiry.
Archaeology and the Narratives of Iceland's Past will inform scholars and students across archaeology, history, and anthropology, while encouraging a broader public awareness of the complex relationship between material culture and national identity.

Designs a novel analytical framework to approach transcultural food mobilities, a culinary phenomenon that has been with us for decades as a result of colonialism and globalization
Why is it surprising for some of us to read the pairing of "Chinese" with "pizzas" and "Italian" with "dumplings," such as proposed in the book's title? After all, in some regions of the two countries, Italians eat frequently dumplings, and Chinese frequently make baked, steamed, or fried flatbread with toppings or fillings. Furthermore, when dumplings are made in Italy by Chinese migrants or Chinese Italians, or when pizzas are made in China by Italian migrants, Chinese Italians, or Chinese without apparent ties with Italy, are these culinary products Chinese, Italian, Chinese-Italian, or something else? Why do we need to care for such labeling dilemmas?
This book shows how China-Italy food mobilities relayed in popular culture helped forge Chi-nese and Italians' socioeconomic identities in recent decades by fundamentally shaping contempo-rary Chinese and Italian consumer cultures. This book addresses China-Italy food cultures against the backdrops of two epoch-making socioeconomic processes. During the 1980s, Chinese cuisine became the first non-European food widely available in Italy, thanks to the widespread presence of Chinese eateries. Only American fast food, which established itself in Italy around the same time, enjoyed comparable popularity as a destination for Italian culinary tourism. Meanwhile, in the early 1990s, together with American hamburgers and fried chicken, the American food chain Pizza Hut's pizzas and spaghetti were the first non-Asian foods that post-Mao Chinese customers recognized as "Western." The book proposes a critical framework that analyzes transcultural food mobilities by seriously assessing the confluence of diverse mobilities and their impact on food cultures. Ulti-mately, the study shows that a sophisticated interpretation of transcultural food mobilities can help address alterity and build understanding in a world of increasing political and cultural polarization.

This book builds on emerging research into the human dimension of literary translators to illuminate how translators can construct and project their brands. Focusing on contemporary Chinese-English literary translators, it examines the evolution and impact of their brand-building within the global literary translation landscape.
Zhang deftly integrates research on branding from marketing, management, and publishing studies, and the sociology of translation to develop an innovative framework for understanding the literary translator's brand. This framework approaches brand-building on three interrelated levels: intra-field (brand input), inter-field (brand investment), and inter-cultural (brand reception) levels. It offers a novel analytical lens that complements and differs from existing tools used to examine literary translators' presence, such as visibility, translator-function, the translator's professional status, and celebrity translators. As applied to the case of three prominent figures in the field of contemporary Chinese-English literary translation, Howard Goldblatt, Nicky Harman, and Ken Liu, the approach elucidates the multifaceted role literary translators play beyond the translation process and the power of their brand names in the international literary exchanges.
The book highlights the possibilities for new research on literary translators' brand-building in other contexts and the fruitfulness of an interdisciplinary approach to literary translation more broadly. This volume will be of interest to scholars in literary translation, sociology of translation, publishing studies, and contemporary Chinese literature.

This book investigates the cultural significance of transformation and metamorphosis in popular media across diverse global and historical contexts. Bringing together interdisciplinary scholarship, the chapters examine how transformation is represented in a wide range of media-from poetry and animation to horror, games, and AI-generated music videos.
With particular attention to Japanese transformation tropes and their global influence, this book rethinks the symbolic and affective power of metamorphosis in shaping identity, politics, and popular imagination. Timed to coincide with the 25th anniversary of both Kamen Rider Kuuga and Meta-Morphing, this collection marks a timely intervention into ongoing discussions of embodiment and change. It is structured in six thematic sections, addressing animated transformations, more-than-human forms, societal metamorphoses, musical and sonic transformation, body horror, and changing identities. Featuring contributions that blend phenomenology, cultural history, and media analysis, the text offers conceptual innovation and methodological diversity. The chapters also engage emerging topics, such as AI-generated content and the intersections of transformation with race, gender, sexuality, and disability. The collection combines rigorous scholarship with accessibility and features contributions from both leaders in their fields research and the emerging voices of early career researchers.
This book is intended for scholars and postgraduate students in the Humanities and social sciences, particularly those working in media, cultural studies, animation, gender and queer theory, fan studies, musicology, horror, and AI studies. Its interdisciplinary framing and international scope will appeal to academics researching transnational popular culture, as well as educators seeking to integrate themes of transformation into their teaching. The collaborative structure ensures coherence across chapters, while its inclusion of historically excluded perspectives makes it a valuable contribution to global and justice-oriented scholarship.

As filmmakers in the Global South are increasingly faced with the choice of succumbing to foreign visions of their own culture or losing access to indispensable funds and future prospects, this study explores this quandary through studying filmmaker's own perspectives.
The book focuses on filmmakers' individual approaches to European film funds, arguing not only that these creator-sponsor relationships are highly complex, but also that filmmakers are fully able to develop various strategies of resistance by reframing these relationships. The author explores the mechanics of European film funding and how filmmakers position themselves within the system, and demonstrates how these strategies are also present in film texts themselves - movies funded by European institutions often scrutinise the notion of intercultural relationships and power struggles, negotiating widespread perspectives on intercultural exchange. Excerpts from interviews with filmmakers, producers, adjudicators of funds and representatives of various cultural institutions are woven into scholarly arguments, theoretical reflections, and film analyses to create a narrative about Latin American filmmakers who manage to overcome obstacles and create novel, exciting ways of sharing their intercultural experiences.
This informative and nuanced study will interest students and scholars of media studies, film studies, South- and Central-American cinema, media industries, economics, politics, communication studies, and languages.

This timely and topical book offers a concise and targeted exploration of the ethical dimensions inherent to volunteering in tourism. Interdisciplinary in scope, this volume delves into the nuanced interplay of factors such as the climate emergency, the phenomenon of flight shaming, and the pervasive influence of social media.
The book aims to explore the complex relationship between volunteer tourism ethics, relevant social movement frames, and their integration into a new narrative for the volunteer tourist industry. This is especially relevant given the current challenges posed by the climate emergency, flight shaming, and the influence of travel influencers. By addressing these dynamics, the book provides insights into how the climate emergency narrative can shape future tourism practices.
Written in an authoritative but accessible and readable way, this volume offers an incisive and compelling exploration of volunteer tourism. International in both scope and appeal, it is an essential resource for students, scholars, and academics across tourism and mobility studies, international studies, development economics, politics, sociology, and niche tourism fields. It also provides valuable perspectives for volunteer tourism practitioners seeking to navigate the complexities of ethics, globalisation, and transformative travel.

This book analyzes synchronization as a symptom of the contemporary art world.
Acting as a tool within present-day social, economic, and political systems, synchronization assigns individuals to predetermined forms of representation. At its core, this book challenges normative synchronization concepts as projections of a unity of bodies and voices, past and present, self and environment. The text offers a non-linear art historical narrative of those practices that have consistently tried to "desynchronize" from antisemitism and homophobia. Through thoughtful analysis of art practices from Claude Cahun and Marcel Moore, Zanele Muholi, Anna Daucikova, Sharon Hayes, Glenn Ligon, and Chantal Akerman, the author seeks to address the current wish to create contemporaneity for all-often through violence against those perceived as not belonging to it.
This book is ideal for researchers and scholars in Art History, Philosophy, Queer Theory, Gender Studies, and Sociology.

Education and Analog Role-Playing Games: Theory and Pedagogy brings together scholars and educators who explore the educational potential of analog role-playing games (tabletop role-playing games and live action role-play) through the lens of pedagogical theory. These games trace their roots to educational war games and teaching aids. This volume goes further and takes a deeper dive into why they are such effective tools for learning, imagination, and identity development. This volume offers a multidisciplinary analysis that draws on philosophy, history, psychology, and critical pedagogy. Contributors examine how analog role-playing games intersect with educational theories such as constructivism, pragmatism, and experiential learning and explore classroom and nontraditional learning contexts. The rich insights position analog role-playing games as rich sites for identity exploration, deliberation, and transformative practice. Rather than simply advocating for gamification or offering how-to guides, this book critically interrogates how these games work, what they offer learners, and what pedagogical challenges they help us address. It is a valuable resource for educators, game scholars, and instructional designers interested in leveraging narrative, collaboration, and play for powerful learning experiences.

This book examines the ethical issues surrounding assisted reproductive technologies and queer family-making practices. By focusing on LGBTQ+ people and experiences in relation to procreative ethics, this book challenges dominant approaches and views in philosophical bioethics.
In Part 1 of this book, the author introduces the idea of queer epistemic privilege regarding issues of family and reproduction and applies this notion to the bioethical debates around donor conception. In Part 2, the author problematizes the typical philosophical conception of the debate over donor anonymity by centering queer perspectives and experiences. Drawing on social science research, she makes the case for "queer difference" in how donor conception is practiced and then employs this notion to show why the dominant ethical views opposing donor anonymity fail. Whereas most scholars view this issue as an issue of pure procreative/parental ethics, this book instead employs a queer perspective to draw out an alternative framing of the conflict-one between procreative/parental ethics and the moral responsibility to resist unjust social systems and norms, e.g. bionormativity. This broader framing offers a limited defense of some uses of anonymous donor gametes that is tied directly to the nature of ongoing LGBTQ+ family marginalization. Finally, in Part 3, the author draws attention to two aspects of donor conception that are common in the queer community but receive virtually no attention in the bioethical literature-known donation and donor sibling contact/relationships-and shows what we miss philosophically when these queer practices are erased from the bioethical discussions around donor conception.
LGBTQ+ Family-Making, Reproductive Ethics, and the (Re)Shaping of Family Values is an essential resource for researchers or advanced students working in Moral Philosophy-especially Reproductive Ethics, Feminist Philosophy, and LGBTQ+ Philosophy-Bioethics, and Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies.

This book examines the recurring phenomenon in film and television where two strikingly similar productions are released in close succession. Examples include Armageddon (1998) and Deep Impact (1998), A Bug's Life (1998) and Antz (1998), and more recently, the 2019 Fyre Festival documentaries and the 2024 Prince Andrew docudramas.
Drawing from hundreds of cases, this book explores why these twin productions emerge, the industrial and creative forces that drive them, and how they reflect broader trends in media history. Situating this pattern within the fields of remake, adaptation, and media multiplicities studies, this book provides a comprehensive analysis of this largely understudied yet pervasive phenomenon. Each chapter examines different motivations behind the creation of twin films and TV shows, from economic imperatives and competitive market dynamics to shared cultural anxieties and trends in audience demand. This book presents a meticulous catalogue of examples, demonstrating how genres and themes gain traction simultaneously across different studios and networks. In addition to offering historical insights, this book engages with contemporary debates on media repetition, nostalgia, and Hollywood's fixation on reproducing familiar narratives. Written by an author with extensive expertise in media studies, this book combines exhaustive research with a clear, accessible style, making it an essential resource for understanding the mechanisms behind content duplication in the entertainment industry. Academically, this book contributes to scholarship in film, television, and media studies by applying an interdisciplinary approach that integrates political science, feminist theory, and cultural analysis. It draws on close readings of films, industry reports, and a dataset of critical reviews to provide fresh perspectives on media production and consumption.
As a valuable resource for students and scholars alike, it enriches discussions on screen media, industrial production, and the cultural forces shaping contemporary entertainment.

This volume advances a new approach to ethics: "living ethics". As an ethical and philosophical orientation, living ethics offers a refreshing perspective on how difficult human situations become opportunities for co-learning and co-creative ethical thinking.
Living ethics starts with the observation that moral problems are living and vital problems that affect our daily lives. It orients scholarship and practice by using theory in a pragmatic way to solve real-life problems, by fostering spaces for dialogical reflection on these problems, and by working closely together with stakeholders to co-imagine solutions. Central to living ethics are human flourishing, interconnectedness, dialogue, responsiveness, moral spaces, and epistemic justice and humility. The chapters in this volume are divided into three parts. The first part introduces and discusses ideas central to living ethics such as ethics as a way of life, co-learning, and epistemic humility. The second part features several examples of practices and projects informed by a living ethics stance in wide-ranging contexts such as public policy, substance use, healthcare, aging, and research. The third part features open-ended discussions and reflections on models of governance and implementation to propel ideas central to living ethics in areas such as international relationships, education, research ethics, and healthcare.
Living Ethics in Theory and Practice will be of interest to a wide range of scholars, graduate students and practitioners working notably in ethics, philosophy and the humanities, social science, psychology, healthcare, and policy.
