This book offers a novel approach to the new science of conservation biogeography, for the more effective assessment and management of human-animal relationships, supported by natural and social science perspectives and technological developments. Conservation biogeography offers a deeper understanding of the modern context of rapid environmental change, politicized and polarized opinions on conservation, and the role for computational technology. Conservation biogeography includes individual perspectives within conservation psychology and group-based issues in broad social, economic, and political contexts. Concepts examined include intersections between wildlife charisma and conservation, perspectives on trophy hunting and human-environment relationships, environmental applications of geomatics, and computerization. This book contributes to the interests of academic researchers, students, practitioners and policymakers, and general readers.

This book provides a synthesis of Late Neolithic / Early Chalcolithic imagery from South-Central Anatolia, encompassing both Central Anatolia and the Lake District. It explores the nature of transformations and continuities in imagery during the period between 6500-5500 BC. The author examines three main categories of artifacts - pottery, figurines and stamp seals - to trace the presence and transformation of particular images in time.

The Neolithic site of Catalhoeyuek (7100- 5950 BC) in Central Anatolia is renowned for its elaborate art found inside the houses. A wide variety of anthropomorphic, zoomorphic and geometric motifs and themes were reproduced on wall paintings, reliefs and mobile objects. The author addresses the question of what happened with the repertoire of motifs in the upper levels of Catalhoeyuek and after its abandonment, and what circumstances might have been related to this transformation. To reassess the imagery, data was collected from Late Neolithic levels at Catalhoeyuek investigated by the Polish team since 2001, as well as from four intensively excavated sites from the Lakes region: Hacilar, Kurucay, Hoeyuecek and Bademagaci. The author applies the semiotic perspective of American philosopher Charles Sanders Peirce, which they argue is a useful framework for discussing the imagery and its transformation over time. The analytical model used is the so-called replication, which allows grasping the diachronic changes. It has never been applied to studies on Neolithic / Chalcolithic imagery.

This book explores the meaning of life for Israelis living along the Gaza border before and after October 7th. It brings together residents' personal stories and photographs, alongside their creative social media posts.

This second edition builds on a groundbreaking longitudinal study conducted between 2018 and 2021, which examined how people made sense of their lives after two decades of ongoing conflict. Now expanded with new research carried out in the wake of the Hamas terror attack on October 7th, it offers a powerful comparison of how life in this region has been experienced and understood across two defining periods.

Drawing on theories from social psychology and peacebuilding, the book weaves together a compelling narrative and visual portrait of Jewish-Israeli men and women living near the border. It also explores how their perceptions and emotions have shifted over time-regarding patriotism and Zionism, their Gazan neighbors, and their hopes and fears for the future at personal, family, community, regional, and national levels.

This book delves into the intricate relationship between music and identity among Indian communities in South Africa, particularly during and after apartheid. It provides an overview of existing research on music and Indian diasporic groups, highlighting the unique challenges faced by Indian South Africans in accessing and preserving their musical traditions. It explores the historical soundscapes of South Africa, detailing how restrictive conditions under apartheid influenced social interactions and music-making. The narrative examines how Indians used music as a form of political resistance, developing a distinct Indian South African sound despite severe limitations. It also investigates the evolution of popular genres like qawwali, filmi, jazz, and dance music, shaped by limited access to formal training and the overuse of technology. The book addresses the gender dynamics within the music industry, focusing on the struggles of women artists. Additionally, it discusses the role of technology in music learning and its impact on aesthetic expressions. Through interviews with musicians, the book provides a vivid account of how Indian South Africans used music to assert their identity and resist segregation. It offers valuable insights into the cross-cultural interactions and the complex ways minority groups crafted their identity in the context of apartheid politics. It is a significant resource for academicians, and music lovers interested in the culture of the Indian diaspora and the history of Indian South Africans.

This socio-historical monograph compares the two theologians Walter Rauschenbusch (1861-1918) and Martin Rade (1857-1940) in a transatlantic juxtaposition, with a particular focus on the political and social dimensions of their thought and work. Both theologians belonged to the liberal spectrum of their respective churches and countries, and both emphasized the political-social dimension of the Christian gospel and the responsibility of their churches for society that arises from the kerygma. Walter Rauschenbusch, from a German Lutheran family, is considered the father of the Social Gospel, which gained significant resonance in American churches during the industrialization period before World War I. For Rauschenbusch, the gospel of the Kingdom of God had to have practical social and political consequences. Martin Rade was a theology professor in Marburg and, at times, a member of the German Democratic Party in the Prussian State Assembly. For him, political and social engagement was a necessary task of theology and the church. As editor of the liberal Protestant biweekly journal Die Christliche Welt, he regularly addressed church-political, Christian-social, and cultural-political issues over four decades. Following an introduction outlining the methodology and research questions, the study first provides historical contextualizations: economic history, social policy, theological history, and social ethics. In this context, American and German social Protestantism are compared. The core comparison between the two figures includes their biographies, major publications, central concerns, and a chapter examining their theology, their understanding of the Kingdom of God, and their social-political commitments. A separate chapter offers a more detailed comparison of several specific aspects: (1) The question of war and peace, (2) The plight and rights of workers, (3)Women's and minority rights. Finally, the concerns of Rauschenbusch and Rade are related to current social inequalities in the USA and Germany, and the present-day social-political conditions in both countries are examined in light of their thought.

This book examines the relationship between the emergence of Byzantine archaeology and British colonialism during the period of the British Mandate in Palestine. Taking a single case study, the Negev Desert (now in southern Israel), this study explores how the development of Byzantine archaeology and historical enquiry in the region after 1800 provided the British government with a political and economic blueprint to secure its strategic interests over the Suez Canal. Several excavations of Byzantine sites during the British Mandate were utilised as an historic proof of concept for scientific programmes of 'desert greening', and to advocate for the displacement of Arab populations in favour of British economic development and town planning. Invariably, such contemporary concerns to secure British access to the Suez after 1869 shaped the interpretation of Byzantine history. Ideas of the Negev as a timeless 'frontier zone', which benefitted from the imposition of a central imperial government and increased economic immigration from a 'Hellenised' western Europe, gained a historical precedent in an imagined Byzantine past.

The relationship between media development and politics is inherently intertwined, and characterised by a push and pull as one is steamrolled ahead by the introduction of new technologies and the other scrambles to keep up with the implications. Nowhere is this clearer than in the history of television in South Africa. This edited volume, 50 Years of Television in South Africa, explores the evolution, impact, and future of television in South Africa. It's unique contribution lies in its interdisciplinary approach, bringing together scholars, media practitioners, policymakers, and cultural commentators to offer diverse perspectives on television's role in South African society. Television's introduction in South Africa was not just a technological event; it was deeply intertwined with the country's political and social landscape. Documenting this historical context provides insights into how media and technology intersect with political regimes and societal norms in this context and the world over.

This book examines AI's transformative impact on creativity, blending insights from economics, media studies, and technology to analyze its role in the arts and the broader creative industries. AI challenges the way we relate and use technology, as well as expand how we think of technological progress overall. Structured in three parts, the book first rethinks creativity as an inclusive, collaborative process through theories like Actor-Network-Theory, arguing AI is a new form of agency within creative networks. It explores the economic drivers of AI adoption, citing industry forecasts, long term trends and the rise of what sociologist Richard Florida calls the "Creative Class". Through critical analysis of the gaps between the rhetoric and realities of AI, the text advocates for "Augmented Creativity", as the right approach to balance human-AI collaboration. Lastly, the book studies pragmatic scenarios for 2035, focusing on job shifts, AI-generated content, and artistic experimentation-avoiding speculative AI hype. By grounding debates in real-world impacts, the book urges a critical, yet nuanced view of AI that ensures it remains a potential agent for collaboration rather than a replacement of human skill and imagination.

This book reframes trauma as not just a response to violence but a structural condition of queer subjectivity-an aesthetic, affective, and epistemological impasse. Through provocative readings of literature, film, music, and performance, the contributors expose how trauma disorients narrative, troubles identity, and resists the consolations of resolution. Urgent and uncompromising, this book offers a bold rethinking of trauma's role in queer theory, literary studies, and cultural critique.

This book is a historical and cultural study of the work of the Jewish women architects who flourished in Palestine under the British Mandate (1920-1948). This comprehensive study adds a new chapter to the story of women in architecture in the twentieth century, demonstrating how women architects made a key contribution to the design of the emergent Israeli built environment.

Through in-depth historical documentation based on newly discovered archival material, Sigal Davidi analyzes the influence of European modernism on the design of institutions for the welfare of women and children. These were developed by Zionist women's organizations that drew inspiration from the idea of the New Woman.

This book offers a multidisciplinary perspective on the study of gender, architecture and the Jewish society in pre-State Israel. It provides a fresh look at this period based on new research and is intended for academics as well as for a general audience.

This book focuses on the submerged Pre-Pottery Neolithic C settlement of Atlit-Yam (dated to the end of the tenth millennium to end of the ninth millennium BP). Located off the Carmel coast of Israel, it is the earliest and best preserved of 23 submerged prehistoric in situ sites known off the Israeli Mediterranean Sea coast. The site is a unique underwater archaeological locality due to the extensive investigations that have been undertaken and which have exposed a large area comprising a range of architectural features, as well as the broad spectrum, richness and excellent preservation of the finds. The site offers insights into the processes of settlement inundation, which is relevant to sea-level rise nowadays, as well as the circumstances of survival and discovery of submerged sites worldwide.

The chapters in this volume, the first of two, presents aspects of the Atlit-Yam site, including the site's archaeological and physical setting and aspects its material culture (architecture, burials, groundstone and lithic artefacts). These data sets are used to reconstruct aspects of the technology and lifestyle of the community that inhabited it and highlights similarities to contemporaneous sites in the hinterland. The second volume, will deal with the economy, diet and health status of the inhabitants, the site's chronology, and reconstructed paleoenvironment including the geological and geomorphological setting of the site assessed in relation to sea-level rise.

This book fills gaps in our knowledge of the coastal Neolithic of the Southern Levant, by providing an in-depth review of the archaeological remains discovered at this unique, submerged site.

As the first comprehensive book on theorizing indigenous Nigerian knowledge systems in communication, media and culture, this seminal work seeks to excavate, reclaim and recenter indigenous knowledge and perspectives in understanding the complexities of Nigerian communication, media, and cultural practices. This volume also seeks to de-westernize, decolonize, and domesticate African communication scholarship by bringing together seasoned communication and media scholars to develop communication and media theories rooted in the Nigerian perspective, drawing from the country's status as the most populous Black nation on earth, and its rich sociocultural communication traditions. These contributions aim to challenge and dismantle the long-standing dominance of Euro-American epistemological frameworks in the field. Established and emerging African communication and media scholars are beginning to rethink and question the application of Western communication and media-based theories to indigenous African communication and media experiences, exploring their creation, content, reception, encoding, decoding, as well as their cultural and contextual aspects. These Afro-ethno-communicative postulations help in identifying how these theories align or diverge from the unique cultural and traditional communicative experiences of the indigenous African people. In light of this awareness, the book seeks to revolutionize the way African scholars apply African and Western theories to interpret local media and communication phenomena in Africa and the diaspora. It emphasizes a shift towards recognizing and embracing emerging non-western indigenous theories, showcasing their potential to break away from homogenization and serve as catalysts for progressive advancements in academic African scholarship.

"Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights in Sub-Saharan Africa is essential reading for anyone wishing to integrate an intersectional, rights-based approach to digital innovation and technologies to move towards substantive equality."

-from the foreword by TLALENG MOFOKENG, UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Health

In Sub-Saharan Africa, digital innovation and emerging technologies are reshaping the landscape of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). As digital solutions gain ground, they offer hope for improved access to services, enhanced health outcomes, and community empowerment. However, these advancements also present privacy, regulation, and equity concerns, particularly where healthcare access is uneven and digital literacy varies widely. Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights in Sub-Saharan Africa: The Role of Digital Innovation and Emerging Technologies explores the intersection of digital innovation and SRHR within the African context. Edited by renowned experts, this work explores how digital tools can improve the accessibility, quality, and reach of SRHR services, while also addressing legal, ethical, and human rights considerations. Authors highlight both the promise and pitfalls of digital health solutions, offering insights into how policies can be shaped to protect rights and promote the responsible use of technology.

This book views the whistleblower as a key character in democratic societies. It argues that whistleblowing is likely to become an increasingly important form of action in the coming years. Whistleblowers are unique actors in our democracies because they disclose wrongdoing from the inside, as organization employees. With their privileged access and specialized knowledge, they contribute powerfully to public, democratic, and moral debates in a way that no one else can. The book explores whistleblowers' relation to democracy by connecting them to values such as suspicion, openness, honesty, and critique. While anchored in a cultural sociological tradition, the book draws on several different sociological thinkers such as Niklas Luhmann, Ulrich Beck, Anthony Giddens, Juergen Habermas, and Pierre Bourdieu. Themes in the book include the democratic history of the whistleblower, normalized wrongdoing in organizations, the place of whistleblowers in popular culture, and Big Tech whistleblowing. This book will be of interest to readers in fields including political sociology, public sociology, the sociology of work, and organization studies.

This book promotes a teaching approach which builds on learner experience, assets and knowledge. By exploiting existing learner resources and knowledge of the world, the book identifies and stresses the need to draw upon first and additional-language/cultural resources and experiences by recognising that language users have choices regarding how they want to participate on interpersonal, interactional and transactional levels. In order to achieve successful (and overcome less successful) meaningful communication, the living experiences, histories and resources which language users bring to the additional-language context are honoured and serve as the basis of the teaching/learning approach. Rather than focusing on decontextualised language structures and on what learners might get wrong, the author argues that teachers should help learners develop a sense of agency and control, pragmatic processing ability and investment. This book will be of interest to ELT researchers, foreign language teachers, teacher trainers, researchers and postgraduate students in applied linguistics.

This book investigates societal shifts induced by internet technologies. Alexei Anisin applies Anthony Giddens' structuration theory to analyze interactions between digital structures and human agency. He argues against deterministic narratives about technological change, emphasizing the contingent and dynamic nature of digital platforms and their relation to societal behaviors. Digital technologies generate new structures that shape societal behaviors, which are reshaped by human agency through reciprocity and structuration. This book observes declining civic participation, demonstrating that online interactions can expand virtual communities while contributing to physical social isolation and decreased interpersonal and societal trust. Online interactions are also shown to have increased political polarization through deepening ideological division and reducing trust in key governmental institutions. Additionally, high screen time and social media use have led to record declines in traditional reading habits, especially among younger generations who prioritize fast and digestible sensationalist content. Anisin theorizes the rise of social media influencers who have impacted cultural norms through a dynamic interplay between influencer-led content production, digital structures, algorithms, and reoccurring interactions with followers, while also addressing how the integration of private tech resources with state-led surveillance is eroding individual privacy and altering political outcomes.

Technology has advanced significantly over the past 200 years, but have ideas about gender and technology also changed over time? Are modern technologies gendered?

In this comprehensive text, Holly Kruse explores how notions of gender and technology have been socially constructed. Organized historically, the book provides a broad overview of global developments in technology and how these technologies have been (ideologically) gendered. Focusing on communication and media technologies and analysing an array of household and workplace devices, the text examines the ways in which they have been considered "feminine" or "masculine". These associations, as the text reveals, often have little to do with the complexity of the technology. Rich with historical and contemporary examples - from bicycles and washing machines to the telegraph and the computer - Gender and Technology encourages us to take a closer look at how and why modern technologies are gendered. By understanding the origins of our ideas about gender and technology, we can see how they have and have not changed over time.

This text is essential reading for undergraduates taking courses on gender and technology, and will be of interest to general readers who want to learn more about the historical relationship between gender and technology.

This book is about "zero generation" witness literature: texts written by those who died in the Holocaust and who knew, at the time of their writing, that they would not survive. As such, they offer a unique perspective that differs from the more widely read and taught literature written by first generation survivors like Elie Wiesel and Primo Levi. These texts were produced across the concentrationary universe and include: the ghetto diaries of Dawid Sierakowiak (Lodz) and Chaim Kaplan (Warsaw); transit camp work, such as the paintings of Felix Nussbaum (Saint-Cyprien) and the poetry of Yitchak Katznelson (Vittel); anonymous letters thrown from cattle cars; Sonderkommando writing and photography from Auschwitz; non-Jewish letter-writing from Gestapo prisons by Helmuth-James and Freya Von Moltke (Tegel); and the literary work of Hannah Szenes, from her diaries in Palestine to her last poetry and letter in a Budapest prison the day of her execution.

This book is a new and original study of High Church activism in the middle decades of the nineteenth century. Focusing on the church union movement, it describes and explains unprecedented levels of clerical-lay cooperation in campaigns of Church defense, responses to contemporary pressures inside the Church, and efforts to mitigate problems in Church-state relations. It explores the leadership role of the London Union on Church Matters and the main factors that shaped its activities, especially Tractarianism, the sense that the Church did not have a sufficiently strong representative voice in debates about questions that directly affected it, and political and social developments that threatened the status and influence of the Church.

This is an edited volume of music histories-of peoples, places, and institutions-that refuses to shy away from the geopolitical realities of a global musicology. With an ironic undertone to the "elsewhere" in the book's title, the volume's contributors grapple with the ethical and democratizing potentials of musicology's recent "global turn." The book's primary objective is to center perspectives from outside the Euro-American mainstream to create a material difference to the frequent scarcity of non-Western scholarship in the Euro-American conception and practice of music studies. By bringing together a small group of scholars' work in a more readily available space given by a sizable Anglo-American publisher, the book aims to enable more multidirectional exchanges and connections to take place in the future.

This book focuses on how youth work and music is measured and valued. The collection explores the landscape of youth work and music, music production and young people's identities, and the opportunities and constraints within the measurement of these kinds of programmes. In addition, it analyses the impact of music-making on young people's wellbeing, the criminalisation of minoritized groups of young people and subcultures, and the evaluation of informal education and creative education. Amid ubiquitous music-making and sharing by young people globally, these essays provide a practical resource with particular relevance for educators and cultural policymakers.

This book investigates how authoritarian regimes extend repression beyond borders by targeting diaspora communities. Focusing on the strategic fusion of soft, sharp, and hard power, it introduces the concept of hybrid transnationalism to explain Turkey's deployment of cultural diplomacy, religious outreach, surveillance, abductions, and legal manipulation-such as the misuse of Interpol Red Notices. These mechanisms are shown not as isolated acts but as part of a coherent strategy to suppress dissent, enforce ideological loyalty, and consolidate authoritarian rule transnationally.

The book draws on rich empirical data, including institutional case studies and cross-border repression incidents, revealing how Turkish institutions like the Directorate of Religious Affairs (Diyanet) serve dual roles-facilitating cultural ties while enabling surveillance and community control.

Situated within the broader landscape of global authoritarianism, the book offers comparative insights, highlighting shared tools of diaspora surveillance and the manipulation of international institutions. It emphasizes how Turkey's position within liberal internationalism allows it to exploit democratic norms and mechanisms while undermining them from within.

Timely and theoretically innovative, the book contributes vital understanding of how authoritarianism becomes mobile, adaptive, and emotionally resonant in the 21st century. Readers will benefit from an in-depth understanding of how authoritarian regimes operate across borders and the vulnerabilities in global governance systems they exploit. This book is essential for scholars, policymakers, human rights advocates, and diaspora members seeking to understand and counter the challenges posed by transnational repression. It offers actionable insights into safeguarding democratic values, protecting vulnerable populations, and reforming international institutions. The book fills a critical gap in the literature on authoritarianism, diaspora studies, and international law, making it a timely and indispensable resource.

Over the past century, landscapes across South American fundamentally changed. As forests were felled, cities and highways built, and agricultural land was managed, national governments set aside protected landscapes in certain charismatic places. These areas- which include some of the most iconic nature reserves on the planet, from Amazonian forests to Patagonian ice fields. -have direct bearing on the world's climate system, the regulation of carbon in the atmosphere, and the protection of species. They are home to hundreds of thousands of Native peoples and millions of mixed-race and European settlers. Today, more than a quarter of South America lies within conservation areas. In A Moderating Force, award-winning Latin American environmental historian Emily Wakild relates a transnational comparative history of two paradigmatic regions-the temperate southern third of South America known as Patagonia and the tropical expanse known as Amazonia. Wakild traces the development of national parks in Argentina, Chile, Peru, and Brazil from the nineteenth to the twenty-first century, explaining the historical processes that led to nature conservation at the national level. She explores the many different perspectives and priorities that contribute to deciding what makes the "best" park and for whom- wild animals, Indigenous residents, national heritage, tourism, or climate resiliency. As the parks were built, they served as a moderating force softening national power by imposing compromises on diverse landscapes. From these sites, politically powerful, scientifically trained, and dedicated resident conservationists navigated new professional platforms and launched studies of flora and fauna that prioritized expertise to be gained in the field. This wide-ranging study sheds new light on exploration, state-making, scientific practice, economic development, and nature conservation in the past to inform what this history means for our future.

This book discusses how people experience and inhabit high-density and high-rise urban environments, drawing on current literature about the psychological, physical, and environmental health impacts. It brings a novel exploration of the evolving definitions of space and new ways of socializing within vertical urban settings, coupled with a cutting-edge approach focused on applying neuroscience principles to urban design. International case studies from Singapore, Seoul, and Hong Kong convey useful lessons for the urban design and morphology of high-density cities.
