Humans have always incorporated wildlife into processes of work, capture, and exchange. During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, globalization became the latest in a long line of forces affecting human-animal relations. Grey parrots traveled the world as pets; rats used global shipping infrastructure to spread to far-off islands and became the object of cross-border extermination campaigns; and California sea otters were relocated to accommodate global oil transportation needs. The language of globalization, however, is rarely used to understand the history of these creatures. Globalizing Wildlife shows how wild animals were not simply affected by globalization but shaped its concrete trajectories at local, national, and international scales.

The editors and contributors of this collection bring the more-than-human turn to globalization studies, foregrounding not only how globalization matters for wildlife but also how wildlife matters for and constitutes globalization. The volume presents a range of geographically- and species-diverse case studies spanning from the 1870s to the present day to show that globalizing wildlife is far from a homogenous process. Ultimately, contributors reconceptualize globalization and wildlife in relation to one another and foster new connections between the longstanding study of globalization and the dynamic, rapidly consolidating field of historical animal studies.
Contributors are Vincent Bijman, Christina Dunbar-Hester, Regina Horta Duarte, George Iordachescu, Nancy J. Jacobs, Ajit Menon, Gregg Mitman, Nitin D. Rai, Simone Schleper, Jules Skotnes-Brown, Monica Vasile, and James L. A. Webb Jr.

This book argues that contemporary digital blockbusters function as laboratories for posthuman cognition that transform spectatorship into a cyborg mode in which perception, memory, and agency are distributed across the cinematic canvas, the diegetic bodies of characters, the formal operations of film style, and the embodied cognition of the spectator.

Drawing on posthumanist theory and the framework of 4E cognition, it introduces four interlinked concepts - embodied and frozen module cognition, amalgamated aesthetics, and the cybokinetic frame - to explain how film form trains attention, sensorimotor coupling, and cognitive adaptation. Methodologically, the study combines close textual analysis with attention and perception research, incorporating formal measures (ASL, MSL, VAI) and advocating for experimental follow-ups using eye-tracking, pupillometry, and fMRI/EEG studies. Through case studies including Blonde, Nope, Inception, RoboCop, Pacific Rim, and Iron Man, the book traces how aesthetic strategies sustain or fracture embodied engagement under conditions of sensory and informational excess. Ultimately, it redefines the digital blockbuster as an active cognitive technology that both reflects and reconfigures twenty-first-century perception.

The book is aimed at film and media scholars, cognitive scientists exploring neurocinematics and enactive approaches, advanced students, and filmmakers who seek guidance on visual design.

Why does Johan Vilde testify about Sweden's involvement in the transatlantic slave trade? Why do the young Stockholm sons, Stefan and Sacho, in Mystiska 2:an discuss class society and commercialism on their way back home from school? And why does the Phantom start a co-operative society in the jungle and act as a mouthpiece for Prime Minister Olof Palme? And in reverse: why is it almost impossible to imagine Spider-Man, Tintin, or Archie ruminating about trade union issues, gender equality on the labour market, or taking a stand against the apartheid regimes in Southern Africa?

New Left Comics examines the leftist radicalisation in Sweden during the decade immediately succeeding 1968 through the lens of comic books. It looks at four of the most popular and widely read comic books and graphic novels-Johan Vilde, Tumac, Mystiska 2:an, and The Phantom-between 1968 and 1980, and uncovers the ways in which writers and artists used mainstream comics as a medium to teach and inform readers about various forms of injustices and inequality-as well as utopian futures-by adding social, political, and economic comments.

This topical and engaging volume in the Global Perspectives in Comics Studies series will be of interest to researchers and students of comics studies, literary studies, visual art studies, cultural studies, media studies, and sociology. It will also be useful reading for a wider academic audience interested in discourses around world politics, politics and media, politics and popular culture, and comics traditions.

Now in a fully revised and updated new edition, this is still the only textbook to introduce best management practice, process and policy in elite and high-performance sport (HPS). Drawing on real-world case studies of elite sport around the world, this book outlines a conceptual framework for studying and analysing HPS and introduces the skills and techniques that managers and administrators will need to develop effective HPS programmes.

Covering the macro-level factors that determine a nation's sporting success, from policy development to measurement and evaluation, this book also unpacks the specifics of elite athlete and team management at a micro level. Covering key themes from leadership and coaching to marketing and innovation, this new edition includes expanded coverage of contemporary issues such as managing interdisciplinary teams, athlete dual careers, HPS systems in less developed countries and high-performance parasport. This book features contributions from world-leading sport management academics as well as practitioners with experience in managing HPS programmes at world and Olympic levels, and each chapter includes a full range of useful features, such as summaries, case studies, review questions and guides to further reading.

This is essential reading for all students, policymakers and practitioners working in sport management or sport development.

This book critically examines walking as a socially and politically situated leisure practice, exploring how movement through urban and rural spaces is shaped by broader structures of power and inequality.

While walking is often framed as a leisure activity with physical and mental health benefits, this book foregrounds its role as an embodied practice deeply influenced by intersecting factors such as class, race, gender, age and disability. Drawing on interdisciplinary theoretical perspectives and innovative methodological approaches, the chapters present empirically rich case studies from diverse global contexts-including the UK, Australia, Canada, Ireland, the Czech Republic, Austria, Hong Kong and Thailand. These studies range from pandemic walking and app-guided navigation to the experiences of mothers, disabled individuals, older adults, people with cancer, black women and those walking with animals. Together, they illuminate how walking practices negotiate space, place, identity and belonging, while also exposing spatial exclusions and embodied constraints.

Walking and Leisure offers a significant contribution to the sociology of leisure, human geography, cultural studies and critical disability studies. It will be of particular interest to scholars and students engaged in research on mobility, embodiment and the everyday politics of place and space.

American Sports, now in its ninth edition, is a comprehensive, analytical introduction to the history of American sports from the precolonial era to the present.

Concise, thought-provoking chapters outline the complex relationships between sports and class, gender, race, religion, sexuality, and region in the United States, offering a definitive examination of how athletics have both shaped and reflected American culture across generations. Building on the expanded attention paid to women, African Americans, Native Americans, and Latinos in the previous volume, this new edition brings the narrative to the present, covering subjects such as the rising interest in soccer, the legalization of sports gambling, and the transformation of college sports through the advent of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL).

Students will develop critical thinking skills by connecting sporting events with broader historical contexts. Engaging sidebars on topics that include the Black Sox scandal, the worldwide influence of Jack Johnson, the significance of softball in lesbian communities, and the reasons for recent changes in baseball rules will spark meaningful classroom discussions. Ten new primary source activities invite deeper student participation.

This insightful introduction continues to be a vital tool for the study of both sports history and American history.

An Introduction to Community Development offers comprehensive and practical approaches to enhance development processes and outcomes for communities. It enables students to make connections between academic study and practical know-how in both private and public sector contexts. Now in its third edition, the book is based on the authors' years of teaching, practice and research along with training they have provided for practicing community and economic development professionals, policymakers, community leaders and planners. It has been road-tested through the authors' extensive experience working directly with communities to build better futures.

A major theme of the book is the link between community development and economic development, and it clearly shows how to integrate them to make communities more prosperous. Most importantly, the book is strongly focused on outcomes, encouraging students to address key issues for community progress. What are best practices for community development? How do we use effective processes for achieving desired results? How do we accurately measure the results of these processes and practices?

This newly revised and updated edition also includes increased coverage of other important issues such as connectedness and placemaking, quality of life, community well-being, sustainability, marketing, and community enterprise. Each chapter provides a range of reading materials for the student, supplemented with text boxes, cases, keywords, and reference lists. It includes skills-based exercises at the end of each chapter to help students turn their learning into action. This new and improved content makes this third edition the most impactful and user-friendly text for community development now available.

Divided Loyalties, Electoral Rules, and Intra-Party Competition explores how electoral systems, social divisions, and regional geopolitics have shaped the course of Kurdish politics in Iraq since the early 1990s. Combining comparative political analysis with field-based evidence, the book provides an innovative framework for understanding how stateless nations and sub-state regions manage internal divisions under limited sovereignty.

As a study in comparative electoral politics, the book explores how institutional design and regional alliances have sustained both cooperation and rivalry within one of the Middle East's most complex political landscapes. Focusing on the Kurdistan Democratic Party, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, and newer movements, it draws on interviews, archival research, and original election data to explain why intra-Kurdish competition remains driven not only by ideology but also by historical cleavages, linguistic and generational divides, and shifting relationships with Iran, Turkey, and Syria. While dominant theories in ethnic politics suggest that parties representing the same ethnic group inevitably engage in radical nationalist escalation to maintain legitimacy, this book offers a comprehensive rethinking of intraethnic party competition. Moving beyond identity-based explanations, it also shows how Kurdish parties adapt to the rules of electoral politics while navigating pressures from powerful neighboring states.

Divided Loyalties, Electoral Rules, and Intra-Party Competition offers timely insights to scholars and students of comparative politics, ethnic conflict, Middle Eastern politics, and democracy, as well as policymakers engaged with divided and post-conflict societies worldwide.

After the 1952 revolution, the Egyptian state became an ideological project promoted by national cultural and media institutions. Focusing particularly on the years under the leadership of Gamal Abdel Nasser (1954-1970), Chihab El Khachab uses official written and visual sources produced by different governmental departments to show how low- and mid-ranking bureaucrats represented and embodied the Egyptian state through a praxis of 'achievement' (ingaz, pl. ingazat). This study demonstrates how a successful anti-colonial nationalist movement built its own state apparatus. El Khachab argues that the state's 'achievements' are neither the tangible outcome of governmental work nor the self-evident metrics needed to evaluate national progress, but an ideological category deployed by bureaucrats. Conceiving achievements in this way allows us to understand how everyday bureaucratic work represents and embodies 'the state', and why this idea remains an important force in contemporary Egypt.

Coastal Futures explores the profound transformation of our relationship with the world's coasts, as nearly 40 percent of humanity now lives within 100 kilometers of the sea.

Moving beyond the traditional view of coasts as simple boundaries between land and water, this book reveals the coast as a diverse, networked landscape shaped by intertidal ecologies, sprawling infrastructures, and everyday practices that reach far beyond the shore. By uncovering the "coastalization" of society, the book highlights the growing significance of shores in understanding contemporary life and environmental change. Drawing on rich ethnographic research, the volume challenges traditional notions of the coast as simply a physical object or maritime boundary. Instead, it closely examines the diverse material forms and infrastructural connections that define coastal spaces, envisioning new futures for these vital zones.

Coastal Futures argues that a scientific inquiry into the dynamic interplay of society and coastlines is both urgent and essential, encouraging more responsible and imaginative ways of living with and on the coast. Ultimately, the book redeems the coast as a geo-ontological force-one that shapes, enables, and constrains the transformative energies of global assemblages, rather than serving as a passive backdrop to human activity.

The construction of the nation-state, the development of capitalism, and the modernization of society have historically been defined as masculine endeavors, with women on the sidelines. This biography of Juana Catarina Romero (1837-1915) shatters many of the stereotypes of nineteenth-century women and provides a new perspective of women's national agency during a time in which women could neither vote nor hold political office. Romero's breathtaking climb from illiterate cigarette peddler and Liberal spy to wealthy entrepreneur, philanthropist, and, finally, cacica (political boss) of the city of Tehuantepec, despite the opposition of male elites, reveals the growing fluidity of class, race, and ethnicity.

Francie Chassen-Lopez's fascinating biography of Romero offers rich insight into the complexities of modernization as it developed on the periphery of Mexico. Romero sought a Tehuantepec-style modernity, a modus vivendi between modernization, Catholicism, and isthmian Zapotec culture. Like her friend President Porfirio Diaz, Romero formed part of a group of ambitious Mexicans of modest origins, forged in civil war, who would build the Mexican nation-state.

Normative ethics is the study of what makes actions right or wrong, and includes such approaches as consequentialism, traditional deontology (including Kantian theory), virtue theory (including Aristotelian theory), and the ethics of care, a feminist approach. With contributions from over forty philosophers, The Oxford Handbook in Normative Ethics provides an overview of the major issues in contemporary normative ethics. The handbook begins with an introduction that provides an overview of the field and the relationships among the topics addressed in the volume. The chapters in Part I start with basic distinctions, introducing consequentialism, deontology, virtue theory, and value theory. Part II focuses on methodology in normative ethics and epistemological questions. Part III spotlights issues in responsibility and agency. Part IV is dedicated to general problems for normative theories, including particularism, collective action problems, and moral status.

Containing Latin America provides a fresh interpretive history of the making and remaking of Latin America and the United States from the Long Cold War to the Global Cold War (1910-1991), exploring how geopolitics created enduring patterns in inter-American relations.

Berger argues that while each Latin American nation-state followed diverse historical trajectories-contrasting Mexico, Colombia, and Argentina-these differences unfolded within broader Cold War frameworks that shaped the entire hemisphere. Central to this analysis is an examination of how the state was understood during this period as a contested historical institution that provided the major arena for national and international politics, consistently determining which ideological, social, and cultural groups gained political access. The volume discusses pivotal moments including the Guatemalan Revolution, the Alliance for Progress, and the Cuban Revolution, and a compelling epilogue takes readers to the present day, examining the continued tension between visions of a common hemispheric future in a globalized world on the one hand and actual inter-American power relations on the other.

This concise yet informative history provides an invaluable resource for students, scholars, and general readers interested in Latin American history, global history, international relations, and development studies.

Seeds of Solidarity is a study of British Guiana amid a wave of Caribbean uprisings that brought modern politics to colonial spaces during the 1930s. It explores the historical power of a movement forged by people at the edges of empire during economic, political, and environmental crises. African- and Indian-Guianese youth, women, and men who worked on sugar plantations led a series of labor uprisings, despite attempts to turn these racialized communities against each other. Rather than erasing identities, their 'overlapping diasporas' signify how solidary can emerge without sameness, and how this process challenged the British Empire and reshaped Caribbean politics. This important work unites Caribbean history, African Diaspora and South Asian Diaspora studies, histories of racial capitalism and labor movements, gender studies, and the politics of colonialism and empire in the post-indenture period. It offers a model of resistance in today's era of deepening racial and economic inequality, fascism, and climate emergency.

The Handbook of Latin American Politics provides a comprehensive overview of the actors, institutions, and challenges shaping politics, governance and democracy across the region. With over 70 entries by leading scholars, it examines the interplay of social movements, political elites, civil society, state institutions, and international actors, revealing both the promise and perils of democratic and institutional development in Latin America.

The volume explores how grassroots mobilization and resistance confront democratic backsliding, how institutional design and accountability shape resilience or decay, and how pressing policy challenges-from inequality and migration to social conflict and environmental governance-reshape political dynamics. Special attention is given to public administration, highlighting bureaucratic autonomy, civil service reform, decentralization, corruption, and transparency as crucial dimensions of state capacity and citizen trust. In addition, the Handbook situates regional politics within broader global influences, including international organizations, financial institutions, and social media, and provides detailed case studies of 20 countries.

An essential reference for scholars, students, and practitioners, this Handbook will appeal to those interested in Latin American politics, democratization, public administration, political economy, and global governance.

Key Features:

  • 73 entries written by expert scholars
  • Coverage of the last two decades of Latin American politics, including post-pandemic developments
  • Analysis of six core dimensions: social actors, institutions, democracy, international actors, policy challenges, and public administration
  • 20 country case studies

This volume is unique because it is the first full-volume book to gather various contributions on the politics of names and naming in Zimbabwe. The premise of the book is that names are historical archives; thus, the chapters gathered herein attempt a chronological survey of the politics of names and naming from the colonial period to the post-Mugabe era, popularly euphemised as the New Dispensation. This chronological study of names and naming was not meant to give a linear narrative of subversion, resistance and contestation, but to show that Zimbabwe does not have a monolithic history and that a chronological study of the names and naming traditions from the colonial period to the present will reveal various histories of Zimbabweans struggling against various hegemonies, from a colonialist chronotope that threatened the onomastic erasure of black people to present political machinations and nomenclatural shenanigans that seek to disavow violent legacies. The multidisciplinary nature of this volume allowed for a more inclusive approach to the politics of names and naming in Zimbabwe. The various chapters constituting this volume were contributed by scholars from the fields of linguistics, literary studies, history, sociology, media and music studies in Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe has consistently offered an interesting case study in various academic fields because of its unique history that includes a protracted liberation struggle and unrelenting post-independence crises. Thus, this volume offers a unique opportunity and archive for researchers interested in Zimbabwean history, politics, literature and culture.

How should we make sense of the political dynamics in Africa today? Which point of view should we adopt to grasp the diversity of what is happening on the ground and in the day-to-day reality of power relations and social practices? To what extent do structural determinants articulate with individual practices and political imaginaries? In answer to these questions, Looking for the Political in Africa provides a captivating, multifaceted portrait of the many ways in which power relations and the daily lives of individuals are negotiated all around the African continent, in places that are often discrete and far removed from the classic arenas of politics. This book brings together contributions from fourteen distinguished social scientists from a wide range of disciplines and geographical backgrounds. Without neglecting the question of the state, international institutions, or globalized capitalism, each chapter pays particular attention to the intimacy of actors, to issues of gender and age, to their online engagement, as well as to the major dynamics of ethnicity, militarization, religion, migration and finance, showing that the political cannot be reduced to politics. They draw on long-term empirical research to present a synthetic picture and offer conclusions that go beyond the continent's limits and feed into broader intellectual projects. In doing so, Looking for the Political in Africa builds an innovative picture of political fields across the continent, underlining the historical depth of current dynamics and highlighting both the transformations of African societies and the ways in which these societies are studied. Oxford Studies in African Politics and International Relations is a series for scholars and students working on African politics and International Relations and related disciplines. Volumes concentrate on contemporary developments in African political science, political economy, and International Relations, such as electoral politics, democratization, decentralization, gender and political representation, the political impact of natural resources, the dynamics and consequences of conflict, comparative political thought, and the nature of the continent's engagement with the East and West. Comparative and mixed methods work is particularly encouraged. Case studies are welcomed but should demonstrate the broader theoretical and empirical implications of the study and its wider relevance to contemporary debates. The focus of the series is on sub-Saharan Africa, although proposals that explain how the region engages with North Africa and other parts of the world are of interest. Series Editors: Nic Cheeseman (University of Birmingham), Peace Medie (University of Bristol), and Ricardo Soares de Oliveira (University of Oxford). Chapter 6 of this work is available under the terms of a CC BY-SA 4.0 International open access licence. This part of the work is free to read on the Oxford Academic platform and offered as a free PDF from OUP and selected open access locations.

At the turn of the twentieth century, life in Ottoman Syria was upended by European and US colonial and capital expansion. Many people responded by migrating to the United States. In doing so, they stepped into the world of international migration, where they had to navigate overlapping states and migration infrastructures - shipping companies and ticketing agents, health inspectors and border police, universities and kinship networks - that each facilitated, restricted, and policed movement.

With this book, Randa Tawil follows the itineraries of the early Syrian diaspora, stitching together migrants' travels across archives from Beirut, Marseille, Liverpool, Manila, Washington, D.C., Michigan, and Texas. She reveals the overlapping and contradicting ways in which race was forged globally in the early twentieth century and its effects on Syrians in the United States. Syrian migrants encountered multiple imperial and national legal regimes during transit, and their varying relationships with different empires set the conditions under which migrants were considered "desirable" or "undesirable" once they reached US borders. Focusing on the experiences of those on the move, Race in Transit makes migrants the agents of a world history that has too often relegated them to the sidelines.

The Castle Slaves of the Gambia River is the first history of a community of enslaved Africans in eighteenth-century West Africa. It provides a vivid portrait of the people whose labor sustained Atlantic trade-such as Hector, a skilled carpenter. Despite hardships they showed remarkable resilience, forging families and communities amid illness and loss, as seen in the tragic fate of Serva. Yet their story is not only one of suffering. The daring escape of Injee and Dukane is evidence of their resistance. Together, their lives reveal the crucial role they played in shaping a distinct creole cultural world along the West African coast.

Needs That Bind reconsiders the dismantling of the Ottoman Empire and the construction of new regimes in the decade after World War I, to understand the consequential connections that remained among the new republican regime in Turkey and neighboring French and British Mandates in Syria-Lebanon and Iraq. Orcun Can Okan examines how these new states and their people managed problems of state succession through diplomatic, administrative, and legal interactions with and between bureaucracies. He foregrounds pressing questions of nationality as they were experienced by a diverse group of social actors, men and women, rich and poor.

Okan tracks previously untapped Ottoman records, now spread across multiple regimes, to investigate claims to retirement pensions, alimony cases between former spouses who became nationals of different states, and disputes over land, property, and assets held in pious endowments. It is through these types of interactions and connections, he argues, that newly emerged post-Ottoman regimes materialized basic norms and understandings about nationality-an understanding more similar to subjecthood to state authority than rights-based citizenship. With an engaging, grounded historical narrative, this book contributes to thinking historically and critically about the tangible stakes and practical significance of nationality in times of profound political change and institutional instability.

Unfree Lives illuminates Yemen's forgotten history of slavery, as well as the transregional dimensions of slave trading in the Red Sea and wider Indian Ocean world. By analyzing Arabic narrative and administrative sources, Magdalena Moorthy Kloss reconstructs the lives of women and men who were trafficked to Yemen as children and then placed in various subaltern positions - from domestic servant to royal concubine, from quarryman to army commander.
In this first in-depth study of unfree lives in Yemen, Moorthy Kloss argues that slaves and former slaves made significant contributions to social, economic and political processes in the medieval period. She highlights the gendered nature of slavery through a nuanced examination of the social identities of eunuchs and concubines. Unfree Lives also includes detailed information on slave trading between the Horn of Africa and Yemen in the 13th century, as well as an account of the little-known Najahid dynasty that was founded by Ethiopian slaves.

Describes and analyzes the main divisions within Israel's heterogenous society.

In November 2022, Israeli citizens went to the polls to elect their representatives to the legislature, the Knesset, for the fifth time in less than four years. This was the culmination of a political crisis that began in November 2018 when Avigdor Lieberman resigned from his position as minister of defense after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu refused to approve a significant military move in the Gaza Strip. Since then, Israel has been caught in a political whirlwind. In Search of Identity seeks to find out the nature of the crisis in Israel by analyzing the main rifts in Israeli society. It describes and analyzes the main splits within Israel's heterogenous society, arguing these divisions have social, ideological, and political consequences, the most important being a lack of common national interests and vision. The goal herein is to present a society and country that has long been searching for identity, not only geographically but also in terms of moral values, ethics, and integrity.
