Humans have always incorporated wildlife into processes of work, capture, and exchange. During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, globalization became the latest in a long line of forces affecting human-animal relations. Grey parrots traveled the world as pets; rats used global shipping infrastructure to spread to far-off islands and became the object of cross-border extermination campaigns; and California sea otters were relocated to accommodate global oil transportation needs. The language of globalization, however, is rarely used to understand the history of these creatures. Globalizing Wildlife shows how wild animals were not simply affected by globalization but shaped its concrete trajectories at local, national, and international scales.

The editors and contributors of this collection bring the more-than-human turn to globalization studies, foregrounding not only how globalization matters for wildlife but also how wildlife matters for and constitutes globalization. The volume presents a range of geographically- and species-diverse case studies spanning from the 1870s to the present day to show that globalizing wildlife is far from a homogenous process. Ultimately, contributors reconceptualize globalization and wildlife in relation to one another and foster new connections between the longstanding study of globalization and the dynamic, rapidly consolidating field of historical animal studies.
Contributors are Vincent Bijman, Christina Dunbar-Hester, Regina Horta Duarte, George Iordachescu, Nancy J. Jacobs, Ajit Menon, Gregg Mitman, Nitin D. Rai, Simone Schleper, Jules Skotnes-Brown, Monica Vasile, and James L. A. Webb Jr.

How should we speak of humanism today? To answer this question, Moroccan philosopher Ali Benmakhlouf turns to Montaigne. Through a rich and attentive reading of Montaigne's Essays, Benmakhlouf reminds us why the sixteenth-century author remains relevant today when the need to recognize the "humanity of others"-from the cry of "Black Lives Matter" to the anonymous deaths of migrants drowning in the Mediterranean Sea-is as urgent as ever.

Always alert to his times, Montaigne wrote about the diversity of others who entered into Europe's consciousness during the Renaissance: natives of the Americas, Turks, or Africans, without forgetting those close at home who, "emaciated from hunger," begged at the doors of those "gorged with all kinds of commodities." Montaigne enumerated and detailed these different ways of life but, as Benmakhlouf argues, his main concern was with others in the plural as opposed to the other, an abstract philosophical term.

Retracing Western humanism from Pico della Mirandola to Sartre, via Ibn Tufayl, a twelfth-century Andalusian author, Benmakhlouf navigates the plurality of European philosophy. By orchestrating a skillful dialogue between a variety of authors, Benmakhlouf brilliantly demonstrates the topicality of Montaigne. Wishing to rehabilitate humanism as embodied by Montaigne, the author calls for the unity of the human race that can only be found at the heart of real diversity.

Coastal Futures explores the profound transformation of our relationship with the world's coasts, as nearly 40 percent of humanity now lives within 100 kilometers of the sea.

Moving beyond the traditional view of coasts as simple boundaries between land and water, this book reveals the coast as a diverse, networked landscape shaped by intertidal ecologies, sprawling infrastructures, and everyday practices that reach far beyond the shore. By uncovering the "coastalization" of society, the book highlights the growing significance of shores in understanding contemporary life and environmental change. Drawing on rich ethnographic research, the volume challenges traditional notions of the coast as simply a physical object or maritime boundary. Instead, it closely examines the diverse material forms and infrastructural connections that define coastal spaces, envisioning new futures for these vital zones.

Coastal Futures argues that a scientific inquiry into the dynamic interplay of society and coastlines is both urgent and essential, encouraging more responsible and imaginative ways of living with and on the coast. Ultimately, the book redeems the coast as a geo-ontological force-one that shapes, enables, and constrains the transformative energies of global assemblages, rather than serving as a passive backdrop to human activity.

This book illustrates the ways in which today's environmental anthropologists are constructing new paradigms for understanding the multiplicity of players, pressures, and ecologies in every environment, as well as the value of cultural knowledge of landscapes.

This handbook provides a comprehensive survey of contemporary topics in environmental anthropology and thorough discussions on the current state and prospective future of the field in seven key sections. As the contributions to this handbook demonstrate, the subfield of environmental anthropology is responding to cultural adaptations and responses to environmental changes in multiple and complex ways. As a discipline concerned primarily with human-environment interaction, environmental anthropologists recognize that we are now working within a pressure cooker of rapid environmental damage that is forcing behavioral and often cultural changes around the world. As we see in the breadth of topics presented in this volume, these environmental challenges have inspired renewed foci on traditional topics such as food procurement, ethnobiology, and spiritual ecology, as well as a broad new range of subjects such as resilience, nonhuman rights, architectural anthropology, industrialism, and education. The second edition includes greater coverage of topics that have grown increasingly pertinent not only to the field of environmental anthropology but also to peoples, places, and species around the world since the publication of the original volume. To this end, the new edition includes chapters illustrating the role of environmental anthropologists in the struggle for environmental justice and elucidating instances of environmental racism, climate change, the effects of the global pandemic, and much more.

This comprehensive, holistically oriented second edition is an ideal resource not only to inform students and scholars about the history and challenges of environmental anthropology today, but also to prepare them to apply the anthropological skill set to address challenges of justice, health, conservation, and wellbeing in a climate-changed world.

This book provides concise insights from a diverse range of leading scholars, reflecting on how they became geographers-representative of the field's diversity. It explores the trajectory of their academic career, their formative influences, interpretive frameworks and divisions within geography, and what it means to have a geographic sensibility. It asks how geographers came to acquire an interest and how they developed that interest. It interrogates the various influences and conditions that helped make them geographers; the interpretive frameworks that guided them; the role of the serendipitous; and how their ideas shifted. The various trajectories cover a period of dramatic change in the field, and this is registered in the stories told. Within that frame, and despite the particularity of each contribution, there are both similarities and contrasts.

In these ways, the book offers insightful contributions on how geographies and the history of the field get made, and for those considering embarking on a career in geography, just what to expect.

Stepping into the vibrant and uncharted margins of Intercultural Communication, Education and Research (ICER), this edited volume challenges the field's established narratives by actively listening to the thinkers, educators, and practitioners whose transformative work has previously been overlooked.

Moving beyond cliches, this volume introduces the 'unsung maverick' not as a heroic figure but as a precarious rope-dancer performing vital and innovative work without a safety net. Through powerful, first-hand accounts, ranging from autoethnographies to poetic experiments, the contributors pull apart dominant paradigms and reveal how systemic biases and linguistic hierarchies have silenced crucial perspectives. Representing a platform for methodological rebellion and epistemic justice, this book showcases how interculturality is lived and reimagined from the ground up.

For anyone ready to move past the usual references and discover the fertile and creative potential at the edges of ICER, this edited volume urges us to listen, learn, and help shape the conversation about interculturality today.

This Element highlights the role of constraints in shaping multilingualism. It discusses their conceptualisation, starting from Michel de Certeau's view of action in everyday life, and operationalisation for the study of migrants. The results of the research conducted among Gambian migrants in Italy show not only constraints but also the tactics to inhabit them, as well as non-language related aspects, for example suffering, which are grouped into five clusters. These are (1) lack of support; (2) limited interaction in the 'local' language; (3) immigration status in conjunction with life events; (4) others' behaviour; and (5) other concerns and suffering. The conclusion presents a discussion on the wider significance of what incorporating constraints means for our understanding of multilingualism and migration, including policy implications, and for intercultural communication research.

There are two popular and competing viewpoints on sports. Many consider them a mere distraction from important social and political problems. Others champion sports as a powerful force for good: teaching character, promoting peace, and encouraging racial and gender equality. Andrew Bertoli shows that these dominant perspectives underestimate the full extent to which sports impact modern life. Sports can worsen relations between nations, divide countries internally, and disadvantage individuals from underprivileged backgrounds. Sports can also, however, build social capital, make people feel more connected, and provide participants with physical and cognitive benefits. Much depends on how people approach sports, both at the individual and societal levels.

This book highlights some of the profound and startling ways that sports and politics have interacted throughout recent history, including: how the Olympic torch relay was started by the Nazis and reflected Hitler's ambition to dominate Europe; the twentieth-century feminist movement to keep women out of the Olympics and the motivations of the female sports leaders who led it; how Michael Jordan's determination to stay out of politics during his career may have made him the most politically impactful athlete in history. Bertoli's insightful analysis challenges many conventional views while also helping readers understand how they can better utilize sports for themselves, their families, and their communities.

Digital Accessibility Ethics: Disability Inclusion in All Things Tech is a practical guide with an urgent goal: to help end tech exclusion of 1.3 billion people across the world with disabilities.

This book introduces the first Digital Accessibility Ethics Framework - an action-oriented, three-part tool designed to influence, change, and disrupt patterns of exclusion with values, actions, and questions. Thirty-nine disabled and nondisabled authors from ten countries and one commonwealth apply this framework across technologies, sectors, and countries.

The editors and authors - with over 600 years of combined accessibility and disability advocacy experience - aim to build a world that recognizes disabled people's right to fully participate in every facet of digital life and to offer organizations an ethics lens to help eliminate the financial, legal, privacy, security, health and safety, and other risks and harms of disability exclusion. Through stories, recommendations, strategies, and other guidance, this book looks at a wide range of topics through a digital accessibility ethics lens: from gaming, hackathons, design, and burnout to procurement, AI, healthcare, cybersecurity, and more. It is for technologists, educators, students, marketers, policy makers, lawyers, and everyone who believes in a digital world for all of us.

As the world grows more digital, as AI is marketed everywhere, and as the number of people with disabilities expands, there has never been a more crucial time to expose, explore, and act at the intersection of ethics, disability, and digital accessibility. Digital Accessibility Ethics: Disability Inclusion in All Things Tech offers a roadmap to show us the way.

There is overwhelming evidence that the impacts of climate change are gender-differentiated and that women are the most negatively affected. Drawing on interviews with nearly 100 female activists and politicians from Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Mauritania, Morocco, Tunisia and Palestine, Lise Storm explores the implications of unequal female political representation for the climate crisis. Storm considers the voices of the women who are, or have been, involved in politics at the highest level. These women have experience with running for election, gender quotas, party politics, portfolio allocation, policymaking, agenda setting and other such political dynamics and processes relating to power. This book sheds light on women's agency in climate debates and the impacts of the dynamics surrounding political representation. It adds new perspectives to the backgrounds of female MPs and activists and the drivers of their success - factors which influence how the global climate crisis is tackled locally in the region.

This book addresses critical issues for contemporary cities building their future, presenting a cohesive narrative rooted in the diverse experiences of its authors and reflecting the systemic nature of urban environments. The authors attribute the success of programming and implementing the development of future cities to the deliberate creation of stakeholder competencies, primarily through the use of smart city tools. It is assumed that, over time, these competencies will evolve both qualitatively and diversely, with their co-creation remaining a dynamic process due to shifts among stakeholders driven by migration, natural population growth or decline, and changes in stakeholder structures.

While urban communities differ significantly in various locations, conditioned culturally, politically, economically, etc., the book argues that the mechanisms of smart cities can be unified due to available technological tools and methods of filtering big data for the needs of cognitive and decision-making processes. In this area, international experiences of both cities and technology companies indicate the universality of solving problems of city functioning and the great ability to disseminate knowledge in this area. The identified trends and applied conceptual approaches can serve as a benchmark for searching for smart city competences that serve the constant increase in the inclusiveness of cities. The book will appeal to academics, researchers and advanced students, as well as policymakers and practitioners.

This book explores the sociological processes related to digital infrastructures, nation-states, military organisations, companies and hackers. It explores how the European Union consults hackers, what the sociological implications beneath hacking tournaments might be, how the CVE system might be mapped onto the research of ICD-11 and how many theological devils fit as opponent models?

Based on ethnographic research conducted among hackers and cybersecurity conferences from several countries across Europe, The Sociology of Cybersecurity asks how knowledge is created in different groups connected with information security. It considers the ways in which social processes in the field of cybersecurity appear similar to phenomena that characterise knowledge production in scientific disciplines.

An examination of what the study of information security can contribute to our debates on privacy, digital economy, theories of sovereignty and critical perspectives in the 21st century, The Sociology of Cybersecurity will appeal to social scientists interested in the sociology of knowledge and contemporary research at the intersection of labour, technology and society.

Football Presidents: Towards a Typology of Political Cultures sheds light on an often-overlooked dimension of football culture: club presidents. This volume seeks to provide a philosophical and theoretical foundation for Dalit studies. It begins by formulating a philosophical and theoretical definition of the term 'Dalit', along with its empirical characteristics-structural location; the cumulative and collective nature of exclusion; the temporal history of exclusion; and the evolution and identification of icons and cultural symbols within Dalit society. The volume studies the Dalits through the lens of social mobility; highlights the triple exploitation of Dalit women; presents an epistemic and theoretical framework for evolving a 'Dalit perspective' and its functions to understand social reality from the point of view of Dalit experience; as an integral part of Dalit studies it provides a framework to understand Ambedkar's thought and philosophy; dynamics of his movements; and engages with the different facets of the Dalit movement from local to global. Lucid, accessible, and thought-provoking, this book will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of social exclusion and discrimination studies, sociology, law and human rights, and South Asian studies.

This book delves into the history of Indians who fell victim to Stalin's Great Purge (1936-1938). Through the political biographies of seven Indian revolutionaries - Virendra Chattopadhyaya, Abani Mukherjee, G. A. K. Luhani, Muhammad Ali, Abdullah Safdar, Abdul Qayuum, and Muhammad Nisar - all of whom travelled to Russia in the early 20th century and collaborated with the Communist International, it offers fresh perspectives on Soviet Russia. Drawing extensively from archival documents housed in Soviet archives, the National Archives in New Delhi, the West Bengal State Archives, and the Joshi Archive at Jawaharlal Nehru University, the book uncovers previously unexplored dimensions of the experiences of Indian communists in Soviet Russia. This volume challenges rigid historical narratives surrounding the Indian Communist movement and brings to light forgotten revolutionaries who embody a neglected chapter in India's struggle for independence. It will be an invaluable resource for scholars and researchers of South Asian history, Russian history, and politics, particularly those interested in the global communist movement.

India's rural transformation journey has been remarkable - characterised by innovation, community resilience, strategic interventions, and continuous learning from both successes and challenges. Delving into India's rural livelihood, this volume presents learnings from livelihood interventions across the country.

Through the authors' on-field experiences and case studies, the book documents the evolution of flagship programmes like the National Rural Livelihood Mission, showcasing how decentralised approaches and collective action have fostered sustainable changes within India's most vulnerable populations. Whether it is about graduating tribal communities from extreme poverty to creating women-led enterprises, or introducing watershed management and climate-resilient farming, this book captures diverse strategies that have proven effective in different contexts. Each chapter reveals implementation challenges, success factors, and scalable solutions, demonstrating how government programmes, partnerships, and community ownership create widespread impact far beyond individual beneficiaries. It highlights the critical role of women's collectives, place-based approaches, and the potential of ecological livelihoods in building sustainable rural economies, offering a roadmap for replicating successful interventions adaptable to local contexts and emerging challenges.

Part of the "Innovations, Practice and the Future of Public Policy in India" series, this open-access volume is an evidence-based compilation which will be an essential resource for policymakers, development practitioners, researchers, and students seeking to understand effective rural development strategies and working on global development, development policy, rural development, public policy, and social policy.

This book explores the intersection of public and private temporal systems. Examining Calcutta between 1780 and 1830, it reveals how time functioned as both a regulatory mechanism of emerging colonial governance and a deeply personal construct that continued to reflect pre-colonial norms and practices.

The author navigates the complex temporal landscape of early colonial Calcutta, where European clock-based standardisation encountered and co-existed with indigenous temporal frameworks. The analysis illuminates how time manifested across diverse contexts-from distance perception and collective memory to religious festivals, scientific endeavours, financial transactions and labour relations. It assesses extensions of law, imperfections of policy and both European and Indian reactions.

Drawing upon a rich tapestry of sources, including the collection of Richard Blechynden's diaries and papers, this study offers unprecedented insight into daily temporal experiences of both Europeans and Indians which (it is argued) foreshadowed major changes to come. It will be significant reading for scholars and researchers of colonialism, South Asian history, India-England relations, temporal studies and modern Indian history.

This book traces how the English language emerged from the nineteenth century not only as an imperial and bureaucratic language but also as a global one. It highlights the role of Thomas Babington Macaulay and his "Minutes" in this journey and his lasting impact on the English language and English studies. This work recovers the contexts of those interventions and assesses their far-reaching effects in India, Great Britain, and the United States. It explores a variety of themes including the early modern quest for a universal language; the European quarrel between the Ancients and the Moderns; the young Macaulay's precocious preference for the Moderns (despite his continuing infatuation with the Ancients); and Macaulay's more mature advocacy of a modern (English) rather than a classical literary curriculum. Further, it registers the ambivalent force of English, a "second language," on the development of Indian identity and culture; and it documents Macaulay's role in shaping the contested concept of "meritocracy," in England, the United States, and India.

The volume will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of modern Indian history, English studies, colonialism and imperialism, and South Asian studies.

At the end of the nineteenth century, William Randolph Hearst's New York Journal glorified cubanas as "the most feminine and simple women in the world." Ever since, the stereotype of Cuban femininity as chaste and dutiful has informed Cubans' racial, social, and ethnic identity in the dominant American imagination, and this gendered and deracialized narrative has taken different forms and served various purposes throughout the Cuban diaspora.

In Making the Miami Cubanita Paula Davis Hoffman examines the cultural precepts and political aims underlying the construction of Cuban femininity in pop culture outlets produced by, for, and about Cuban Americans of the Cuban diaspora. By incorporating academic texts, oral interviews, and elements of popular culture as well as personal accounts of growing up in a first-wave Cuban exile family, Hoffman discusses the historical forces that molded vacillating constructions of Miami Cuban women. Organized by decade, this book traces internal and external articulations of Cuban American culture and examines how Cuban American exceptionalism played into the evolution of the term chonga, originally an insult disciplining young cubanas who performed stigmatized ethnic signifiers that has today become a label some proudly own. Not only does Hoffman fill a gap in academic research surrounding the subculture of Cuban American women, she further demonstrates how migration, race, gender, and sexuality are informed by popular culture and political agenda within the diverse context of South Florida.

Aristotelian Naturalism is an ethics on which moral goodness is a species of natural goodness-the kind of goodness we find on display creatures whose habits and activities enable them to thrive. What it takes for humans to be good is to have habits and engage in activities that contribute to human flourishing. The primary aim of this book is to present a revisionist version of Aristotelian Naturalism enriched by empirical evidence and responsive to criticisms from feminist and disability ethics. Pluralist Aristotelian Naturalism holds that human goodness is not a single, unitary ideal to which all humans should aim, instead admitting of real diversity, just as goodness in general admits of diversity across various species. Consequently, there are various sets of human virtues that promote human flourishing in its many forms. Being and Becoming Good explicates an Aristotelian methodology of ethics on which philosophical reasoning is used to integrate observational evidence about the shape life forms take and the dispositions that contribute to good human lives. Observing what humans are and do in order to thrive in a wide array of bodies, social-political contexts, and environments, puts pressure on the standard Aristotelian Naturalist singular ideal of human goodness as depicted by a flourishing neurotypical, able-bodied, resource-rich mature adult. There is substantial variation in human forms of life and human flourishing, and so no one human good or single set of virtues. Instead, there is a diversity of forms of human goodness, all equally valuable. Moreover, the achievement of one kind of human goodness changes what we are able to do and be. By being good in one way, humans acquire the capacity to be good in another way. Most of us, for most of our lives, are simultaneously being good and becoming good.

Street vendors often face disproportionate state violence not simply for their use of public space, but because of who they are as users of public space. Through a multicity comparison, Street Vending and the Right to the City demonstrates how vendors blur the lines of in/formality through their resistance tactics, and fight for their rights to the city not only as economic agents, but as residents seeking urban belonging. Given the state violence that people living and working informally face, claiming the right to exist in urban space is indeed a radical act. Cities and states, from New York City to Uruguay, have begun to formalize street vending, with many advocates arguing for this approach, but this book highlights why formalization is not a cure. With international examples and an in-depth case study featuring a comparison of Chicago and Mumbai, the chapters explore how urban informalities are produced and offer perspectives on roadblocks and pathways to gaining legitimacy. This book is essential for academics and students in urban planning, urban studies, anthropology, sociology, urban design, geography, and political science, as well as practitioners and policymakers.

This book investigates the treatment of land as a source of money in global urban processes. Probing land development at moments of value creation, capture, negotiation, contestation, and transformation, it sheds light on how and why value practices matter in transforming the politics of the status quo so that the social life of land may thrive.

This book approaches value as a mode of practice to investigate how the deepening treatment of land as a source of municipal revenue and private profit has become a hegemonic project that penetrates and shapes key aspects of how we run cities and live our urban life. Closely related is a set of issues that greatly concern urban scholars, municipal planners, and community organizers around the world: the use and politics of land value capture (LVC); the role of the state in land taking and assemblage; mechanisms of land development tools and their impacts; public-private power relations; the conceptualization, production, negotiation, and distribution of costs and benefits; fiscal policy; and community mobilization and political contestation. Nine global case studies offer insights into the centrality of land development as a source of money, the narrowing of how land is valued, the resulting problematic outcomes of market capture of land value, the politics of the status quo, and community experimentations with counter and alternative practices. A value framework serves as a heuristic to help probe the politics of land development more deeply at different moments of practice: value creation, value capture, value negotiation, value contestation, and value transformation. Bringing the case studies into a useful juxtaposition, the value framework also outlines how to engage practices to generate a transformative politics of land under which competing value logics and the social life of land may thrive.

This book is particularly useful for urban scholars, municipal planners, community organizers, educators, and students in fields related to urban planning and geography and those who are interested in issues around LVC, land development tools, urban redevelopment, public-private negotiation, urban political economic analysis, community mobilization, alternative urbanism, equity, and justice.

What shapes the city? This book answers this question with a fresh, relational lens: spatial governance landscapes, the dynamic interplay between planning regulation and property-market strategies. Centered on the Metropolitan Region of Amsterdam, the book traces how rules, norms, and public ambitions meet the logics of investors, developers, and intermediaries to co-produce urban form and everyday life. Bringing planning scholarship into direct conversation with real estate and urban governance studies, the authors map regulatory landscapes and investor landscapes side by side, showing how their frictions and alignments open and close pathways for housing, land use, and infrastructure.

Crucially, the book challenges a common hesitation in critical planning and urban studies to engage real estate for fear of 'capitulating' to market logics. Instead, it advances a relational approach that makes visible the fundamental interactions between public regulators and private investors, and demonstrates why understanding these relations is indispensable to explaining, and shaping, urban development dynamics. Amsterdam may be a small city, but it is a revealing laboratory: its distinctive planning traditions, acute housing pressures, and concentrated investment flows render broader patterns legible.

Built on extensive interviews, original databases on property transactions, and planning regulations, the book moves from conceptual framing to empirically rich chapters on Amsterdam's regulatory infrastructures and evolving investment ecologies, concluding with a synthetic answer to the enduring question of state-market relations in urbanization. The result is a theory-driven, evidence-based account, and a new integrative model that synthesizes market and regulatory findings, offering a transferable framework and research agenda for analyzing and governing where regulation and property meet.

Purist Pursuits chronicles how and why Armenians in the Ottoman Empire fashioned a new language called Western Armenian. Tracing its rise from the eighteenth to the early-twentieth centuries, Jennifer Manoukian studies the evolution of an ever-changing ideology that undergirded all phases of the language's formation: linguistic purism. Constituting the primary preoccupation of the Ottoman Armenian intelligentsia, linguistic purism dictated that Armenians needed to abandon Turkish loanwords and fundamentally alter the way they wrote and spoke. While linguistic purism continues to be a powerful force throughout the Armenian diaspora today, its historical roots have not been explored until now.

With this book, Jennifer Manoukian reimagines what language histories can be for Ottoman-era language communities. She is the first to expose Western Armenian as an ideologically fueled project and to examine the power of global intellectual movements in crafting new language ideologies in the Ottoman Empire. Drawing on untapped Armenian-language sources published in Istanbul, Izmir, Venice, and Vienna, she underscores how examining shifts in attitudes, anxieties, and debates about language can serve as indicators of ideological change and reveal unarticulated global linkages. Ultimately, her work charts a new course in the study of language in the Ottoman Empire.

Ngu Ik Tien explores how Malaysia's Barisan Nasional (BN) regime-once celebrated as a model of consociational democracy-achieved broad political domination through its structures and systems across the country, including in the Chinese-majority municipality of Sibu in Sarawak. However, the study reveals how the regime deviated from ideal consociational principles, ultimately alienating ethnic minorities and fueling the rise of subnational regionalism.

The book focuses primarily on the role of Chinese timber tycoons under the leadership of the Sarawak United Peoples' Party (SUPP). Their influence over local social and political domains enabled them to broadly dominate local society. Through these local institutions, they established deeply rooted patron-client networks, parts of which were integrated into the Sarawak Barisan Nasional (SBN) machinery. However, growing local opposition meant that even politically well-connected timber tycoons could never achieve full domination. The increasing limits of these political structures led to the convergence of local and national forces calling for regime change and the subsequent rise of Sarawak regionalism discourse, which continues to structure Malaysian politics following BN's fall from power in 2018. This provides valuable insights into how politics unfolds on the ground by decentering state-centric narratives to emphasize their entanglement with society and regime continuity in the present.

Ethnic Chinese Politics in East Malaysia, 1945-2018: From Timber-tycoons to Sarawak Regionalism is a valuable book for academics and scholars of Malaysian politics, consociational democracy, ethnonationalism, the ethnic Chinese political economy of Southeast Asia, and regionalism. It is also of interest to researchers and think tanks in political science, Southeast Asian studies, and comparative politics, as well as those studying regime transitions, state-society relations, and informal political networks.

Kachinland is an unrecognized state in the borderlands of Myanmar, India, China, and Thailand. Its geography throws into sharp relief the intersecting dynamics of British colonialism, settler colonialism, and protracted war between the Kachin Independence Army and the Myanmar Army. Kachinland's rich natural resources - including jade and hydropower - are coveted by the junta-led Myanmar government and its energy hungry neighbor, China. As resource extraction and land confiscation intensifies, Kachin activists and artists turn to Indigenous law and media to stem the tide of displacement and dispossession.

Emily Hong follows a diverse cast of Kachin activists, punk rock musicians, women farmers, and armed group leaders dreaming up new futures for Kachinland. She examines how they draw on the infrastructures of the borderlands - cross-border media tactics, inter-ethnic solidarity, and an expanded sense of the law and political possibility-to sustain activism for the long-haul. With critical awareness of the colonial legacies of the region and of anthropology itself, Hong uncovers the limitations and liberatory potential of borderland solidarity, offering a powerful lens for understanding global activism and for navigating collaborative ethnography. Through evocative storytelling and sensory ethnography, Hong's book challenges readers to move beyond a Western lens on solidarity to ask what activists, artists, and anthropologists alike can learn from centering non-Western ways of theorizing and embodying political sensation and collective action.
