This book offers an insight into the Armenian diasporic communities in India through the lens of diaspora studies. It focuses on the dynamics of the communities within urban spaces, their affiliations and affinities within and beyond their 'memory' and highlights complexities of the Armenian diasporic communities in India. It studies identity transformations through time and space and how the community integrates with the society in the host country. It also underlines how cultural, linguistic and political transformations in India, from being part of the British Empire to Independence, helped form a critical consciousness among the Armenian communities settled there. The volume will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of Armenian studies, migration and diaspora studies, South Asian history and the history of East by and large.

Unmasking the rituals and cultural norms that define communities of artificial intelligence (AI) workers, Humans of AI demonstrates that there would be no AI without human intervention.

Not a day goes by without breathless commentary on the increasing power of this innovative technology. Hype flows from the sages of Silicon Valley. But who is behind the evolution of this technology, and how does it really work? In Humans of AI, anthropologist Joseph Wilson details his efforts to understand the process and customs of AI development.

Wilson introduces readers to the hidden world of AI - behind the doors of chip design labs, coding bootcamps, and organizations teaching AI to speak dozens of languages. He meets philosophers envisioning a future without disease or death, a Nobel Prize-winning scientist who warns of AI's existential risks, and ghost workers whose invisible labor powers the world's biggest tech platforms. He also speaks with writers, artists, and developers wrestling with the promise and peril of AI to find out what they really think of ChatGPT. Wilson's empathetic and thoughtful investigation provides readers a front row view on how AI is actually made.

Humans of AI is indispensable in reminding people that the work of AI is not miraculous or magical, but vividly human.

Sea Change investigates cultural texts that reflect the metamorphosis of the Mediterranean and Caribbean regions during the last two centuries. By placing these two seas side by side, this book challenges conventional distinctions between them and highlights their many shared traits and connections, suggesting new ways to understand the economic, political, and environmental challenges both regions face today.

While examining the cultural productions that emerge from the Mediterranean and Caribbean, modern languages scholars Jessica R. Boll, Marilen Loyola, and Sharon Meilahn Bartlett adopt a decentralized approach that moves beyond the influence of the United States and Europe. They further challenge traditional narratives by centering the experiences of individuals from historically repressed groups. Through analyses of visual art, puppet shows, songs, graphic fiction, and television, this volume shifts the focus away from the canonical to foreground accessible and popular forms of expression.

By highlighting these places, perspectives, and productions, Sea Change underscores the reciprocal influence between the mainstream and the marginalized. It strives to dismantle (post)colonial hegemonies and demonstrate that those often relegated to the periphery can be agents - rather than mere subjects - of change.

Redefining space, power, and identity in China's largest internal diaspora

In the late imperial period of China, two major historical forces reshaped cultural and social landscapes in ways that have not been explored in depth: the Huizhou mercantile diaspora and the literary ascent of women. Women Writers of Huizhou approaches these converging forces by examining the work and spatial imaginaries of six Huizhou-descended women writers. Rather than being confined by gender regimes often associated with Huizhou and its lineage structures, these women actively navigated transregional networks, staking literary and cultural claims in an era of unprecedented mobility.

Their writings - ranging from poetry to political treatises - reveal a profound engagement with space and place. Some women articulated deep ties to Huizhou and places that provided new anchoring for their diasporic families, while others reimagined a cosmic and political order that encompassed far-reaching transregional movements. As the Qing era's commercial and intellectual epicenters shifted, these women leveraged their mobility and literary talents to reshape familial legacies and influence broader discussions of governance, war, and restoration.

This book offers an innovative spatial analysis of Qing women's writing, bringing literary studies into dialogue with Huizhou scholarship, diaspora studies, and geography. By revealing how women inscribed themselves into historical and spatial narratives, it repositions Huizhou as a key player in Qing cultural history in connection with the agency of women in shaping China's intellectual traditions. Essential reading for scholars of gender, literature, and history.

Common sense is supposed to be so obvious it can go without saying. And yet, it has been hard to pin down, partly because its contents are vague and inconsistent, and partly because it has always been difficult to say what kind of sense common sense is. Making Common Sense is an historical account of attempts, from antiquity to the present, to solve this puzzle. The ambiguity began centuries ago with the merger of the common sense, the sensorium commune, a kind of sixth sense responsible for coordinating the other five, with the sensus communis, a collection of implicit social habits and beliefs. Ever since, common sense, as a power both practical and thoughtful, has promised to split the difference between sensation and reason, the body and the mind, and between individuals and their society. As challenges from medical science and skeptical philosophy accumulated, though, common sense assumed a number of different forms in response. It has been a physical organ, a mental faculty, a body of knowledge, a system of axioms, an ethical principle, and a synonym for culture, until finally, with game theory and artificial intelligence, it becomes a number. Michael North tracks the obvious through these changes, showing why it remains, even now in the age of AI, as dark and mysterious as it was in the beginning.

This book takes as its main thread the struggle and cyclical alternation between the New Historiography (rooted in China's narrative historical tradition) and the New Sinology (grounded in textual criticism) in modern Chinese historiography over the past century. Focusing primarily on the differing interpretations of historical scholarship's essence among various schools of historians during this period, it examines the resulting divergences in concepts, methodologies, and approaches. The work further evaluates the actual impact of these differences on the development of historical studies. This book is essential for anyone interested in the intersection of history, culture, and intellectual thought.

Why does Johan Vilde testify about Sweden's involvement in the transatlantic slave trade? Why do the young Stockholm sons, Stefan and Sacho, in Mystiska 2:an discuss class society and commercialism on their way back home from school? And why does the Phantom start a co-operative society in the jungle and act as a mouthpiece for Prime Minister Olof Palme? And in reverse: why is it almost impossible to imagine Spider-Man, Tintin, or Archie ruminating about trade union issues, gender equality on the labour market, or taking a stand against the apartheid regimes in Southern Africa?

New Left Comics examines the leftist radicalisation in Sweden during the decade immediately succeeding 1968 through the lens of comic books. It looks at four of the most popular and widely read comic books and graphic novels-Johan Vilde, Tumac, Mystiska 2:an, and The Phantom-between 1968 and 1980, and uncovers the ways in which writers and artists used mainstream comics as a medium to teach and inform readers about various forms of injustices and inequality-as well as utopian futures-by adding social, political, and economic comments.

This topical and engaging volume in the Global Perspectives in Comics Studies series will be of interest to researchers and students of comics studies, literary studies, visual art studies, cultural studies, media studies, and sociology. It will also be useful reading for a wider academic audience interested in discourses around world politics, politics and media, politics and popular culture, and comics traditions.

American Sports, now in its ninth edition, is a comprehensive, analytical introduction to the history of American sports from the precolonial era to the present.

Concise, thought-provoking chapters outline the complex relationships between sports and class, gender, race, religion, sexuality, and region in the United States, offering a definitive examination of how athletics have both shaped and reflected American culture across generations. Building on the expanded attention paid to women, African Americans, Native Americans, and Latinos in the previous volume, this new edition brings the narrative to the present, covering subjects such as the rising interest in soccer, the legalization of sports gambling, and the transformation of college sports through the advent of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL).

Students will develop critical thinking skills by connecting sporting events with broader historical contexts. Engaging sidebars on topics that include the Black Sox scandal, the worldwide influence of Jack Johnson, the significance of softball in lesbian communities, and the reasons for recent changes in baseball rules will spark meaningful classroom discussions. Ten new primary source activities invite deeper student participation.

This insightful introduction continues to be a vital tool for the study of both sports history and American history.

An Introduction to Community Development offers comprehensive and practical approaches to enhance development processes and outcomes for communities. It enables students to make connections between academic study and practical know-how in both private and public sector contexts. Now in its third edition, the book is based on the authors' years of teaching, practice and research along with training they have provided for practicing community and economic development professionals, policymakers, community leaders and planners. It has been road-tested through the authors' extensive experience working directly with communities to build better futures.

A major theme of the book is the link between community development and economic development, and it clearly shows how to integrate them to make communities more prosperous. Most importantly, the book is strongly focused on outcomes, encouraging students to address key issues for community progress. What are best practices for community development? How do we use effective processes for achieving desired results? How do we accurately measure the results of these processes and practices?

This newly revised and updated edition also includes increased coverage of other important issues such as connectedness and placemaking, quality of life, community well-being, sustainability, marketing, and community enterprise. Each chapter provides a range of reading materials for the student, supplemented with text boxes, cases, keywords, and reference lists. It includes skills-based exercises at the end of each chapter to help students turn their learning into action. This new and improved content makes this third edition the most impactful and user-friendly text for community development now available.

After the 1952 revolution, the Egyptian state became an ideological project promoted by national cultural and media institutions. Focusing particularly on the years under the leadership of Gamal Abdel Nasser (1954-1970), Chihab El Khachab uses official written and visual sources produced by different governmental departments to show how low- and mid-ranking bureaucrats represented and embodied the Egyptian state through a praxis of 'achievement' (ingaz, pl. ingazat). This study demonstrates how a successful anti-colonial nationalist movement built its own state apparatus. El Khachab argues that the state's 'achievements' are neither the tangible outcome of governmental work nor the self-evident metrics needed to evaluate national progress, but an ideological category deployed by bureaucrats. Conceiving achievements in this way allows us to understand how everyday bureaucratic work represents and embodies 'the state', and why this idea remains an important force in contemporary Egypt.

Surveillance and the Dossier delves into how dossiers, both paper-based and digital, have been used by governments both historically and in contemporary times to inflict various forms of violence upon the public, including psychological, physical, and reputational.
This volume establishes dossier creation as the foundational practice of all bureaucracies, despite differences in how it has been weaponized as a technique of power by different systems. In nine case studies, ranging from police dossiers in Nazi Germany to China's Hukou family dossier system, this book examines the evolution of surveillance in societies. Surveillance and society researchers Cristina Plamadeala and OEzguen Erdener Topak engage in a diverse yet comprehensive study of this surveillance tool, looking at examples such as dossiers implicating former members of Zimbabwe's Central Intelligence Organization (CIO), dossiers used in Cold War-era Australia to monitor migrants from the Soviet Union, dossiers of colonial Japan's Unit 731, deployed in Manchukuo, in Northeast China, and dossiers mobilized for Canada's World War II conscription program. Deeply relevant and imperative, Surveillance and the Dossier seeks to understand the links between the infliction of state-violence and surveillance.
This book demonstrates that dossiers serve as a valuable platform for understanding the past and present of surveillance societies across governments and countries.

This book critically examines walking as a socially and politically situated leisure practice, exploring how movement through urban and rural spaces is shaped by broader structures of power and inequality.

While walking is often framed as a leisure activity with physical and mental health benefits, this book foregrounds its role as an embodied practice deeply influenced by intersecting factors such as class, race, gender, age and disability. Drawing on interdisciplinary theoretical perspectives and innovative methodological approaches, the chapters present empirically rich case studies from diverse global contexts-including the UK, Australia, Canada, Ireland, the Czech Republic, Austria, Hong Kong and Thailand. These studies range from pandemic walking and app-guided navigation to the experiences of mothers, disabled individuals, older adults, people with cancer, black women and those walking with animals. Together, they illuminate how walking practices negotiate space, place, identity and belonging, while also exposing spatial exclusions and embodied constraints.

Walking and Leisure offers a significant contribution to the sociology of leisure, human geography, cultural studies and critical disability studies. It will be of particular interest to scholars and students engaged in research on mobility, embodiment and the everyday politics of place and space.

This book explores the sociological processes related to digital infrastructures, nation-states, military organisations, companies and hackers. It explores how the European Union consults hackers, what the sociological implications beneath hacking tournaments might be, how the CVE system might be mapped onto the research of ICD-11 and how many theological devils fit as opponent models?

Based on ethnographic research conducted among hackers and cybersecurity conferences from several countries across Europe, The Sociology of Cybersecurity asks how knowledge is created in different groups connected with information security. It considers the ways in which social processes in the field of cybersecurity appear similar to phenomena that characterise knowledge production in scientific disciplines.

An examination of what the study of information security can contribute to our debates on privacy, digital economy, theories of sovereignty and critical perspectives in the 21st century, The Sociology of Cybersecurity will appeal to social scientists interested in the sociology of knowledge and contemporary research at the intersection of labour, technology and society.

This volume seeks to provide a philosophical and theoretical foundation for Dalit studies. It begins by formulating a philosophical and theoretical definition of the term 'Dalit', along with its empirical characteristics-structural location; the cumulative and collective nature of exclusion; the temporal history of exclusion; and the evolution and identification of icons and cultural symbols within Dalit society. The volume studies the Dalits through the lens of social mobility; highlights the triple exploitation of Dalit women; presents an epistemic and theoretical framework for evolving a 'Dalit perspective' and its functions to understand social reality from the point of view of Dalit experience; as an integral part of Dalit studies it provides a framework to understand Ambedkar's thought and philosophy; dynamics of his movements; and engages with the different facets of the Dalit movement from local to global. Lucid, accessible, and thought-provoking, this book will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of social exclusion and discrimination studies, sociology, law and human rights, and South Asian studies.

This book delves into the history of Indians who fell victim to Stalin's Great Purge (1936-1938). Through the political biographies of seven Indian revolutionaries - Virendra Chattopadhyaya, Abani Mukherjee, G. A. K. Luhani, Muhammad Ali, Abdullah Safdar, Abdul Qayuum, and Muhammad Nisar - all of whom travelled to Russia in the early 20th century and collaborated with the Communist International, it offers fresh perspectives on Soviet Russia. Drawing extensively from archival documents housed in Soviet archives, the National Archives in New Delhi, the West Bengal State Archives, and the Joshi Archive at Jawaharlal Nehru University, the book uncovers previously unexplored dimensions of the experiences of Indian communists in Soviet Russia. This volume challenges rigid historical narratives surrounding the Indian Communist movement and brings to light forgotten revolutionaries who embody a neglected chapter in India's struggle for independence. It will be an invaluable resource for scholars and researchers of South Asian history, Russian history, and politics, particularly those interested in the global communist movement.

India's rural transformation journey has been remarkable - characterised by innovation, community resilience, strategic interventions, and continuous learning from both successes and challenges. Delving into India's rural livelihood, this volume presents learnings from livelihood interventions across the country.

Through the authors' on-field experiences and case studies, the book documents the evolution of flagship programmes like the National Rural Livelihood Mission, showcasing how decentralised approaches and collective action have fostered sustainable changes within India's most vulnerable populations. Whether it is about graduating tribal communities from extreme poverty to creating women-led enterprises, or introducing watershed management and climate-resilient farming, this book captures diverse strategies that have proven effective in different contexts. Each chapter reveals implementation challenges, success factors, and scalable solutions, demonstrating how government programmes, partnerships, and community ownership create widespread impact far beyond individual beneficiaries. It highlights the critical role of women's collectives, place-based approaches, and the potential of ecological livelihoods in building sustainable rural economies, offering a roadmap for replicating successful interventions adaptable to local contexts and emerging challenges.

Part of the "Innovations, Practice and the Future of Public Policy in India" series, this open-access volume is an evidence-based compilation which will be an essential resource for policymakers, development practitioners, researchers, and students seeking to understand effective rural development strategies and working on global development, development policy, rural development, public policy, and social policy.

From Koreanness to K-ness: Contemporary Korean Culture and Society aims to conceptualise 'K-ness' as a new way of understanding the underlying characteristics that shape the semiotic, cultural, and sociological representations of contemporary Korean culture and society.

The global popularity of Korean cultural content has sparked extensive interest in various facets of the Korean language, culture, and society. These recent changes present a unique opportunity to reassess and reshape our approach to the theorisation of 'Koreanness' as a strong national identity significantly influenced by Confucian values, patriarchy, and patriotism. Indeed, a multitude of K-words - including the ever-popular domains of 'K-pop', 'K-drama' and 'K-food' - reflect the diverse but coherent manifestations of the new Koreanness, which often transcends the boundaries of tradition and history.

In this interdisciplinary edited volume, the contributors provide fresh insights into the new Koreanness that has been reshaped by the current international popularity of Korean popular culture, the emergence of new media, and the cross-cultural encounters in the more globalised environment. By exploring themes, topics, and theories linked to ongoing discussions and emerging trends, this book illuminates the multidimensional nature of 'K-ness'.

Flourishing Together: Karl Marx's Vision of the Good Society provides a novel interpretation of Marx's vision of the good society that sees self-realization in work as a vital component of human flourishing. The core idea is that people realize themselves through exercising and developing their powers in ways that provide others with the goods and services they need to pursue their flourishing. Understood this way, Marx's vision of the good society can withstand many of the criticisms traditionally directed at it and stands as an attractive alternative to liberal egalitarian theories of justice. Throughout the book, Kandiyali shows the relevance of Marx for several current issues and debates, including the role of work in a good life, the desirability of universal basic income, and the problems inherent in the idea of a post-work society. In doing so, he shows Marx to be highly relevant for contemporary political philosophy.

Identity and Discourse in Contemporary Rwandan Media: Rethinking Reconciliation examines how post-genocide Rwandan media uses the language of forgiveness to support political stability while undermining dissent.

Readers will gain a comprehensive understanding of how media language shapes political ideology in post-conflict societies through detailed analysis of Rwanda's mediascape. The book contextualizes post-ethnic discourse across multiple media platforms rather than focusing solely on state-run radio, revealing the multifaceted relationships among media practice, regulation, and acceptable ideology. Building on foundational works by Alan Thompson and Gerard Prunier, the book establishes clear connections between Rwanda's nationalist project of post-ethnic identity and state-sponsored reconciliation, providing critical insights into media's role in political control and social engineering.

This book is written for scholars, researchers, and advanced students in media studies, journalism, and peace and conflict studies. It will appeal to academics studying post-conflict media, political communication, and African studies, as well as practitioners working in international development, conflict resolution, and media policy.

When most people picture the US-Mexico border, they think of walls, fences, concrete, and wire. But in this first history of how the environment influenced physical boundary-making between the two nations, Mary E. Mendoza focuses on how the natural world shaped ideas about race, gender, and security. In so doing, she unearths surprising origins of the modern-day immigration debate.
Mexican migrants have historically been seen by some in the US as invasive and less than human. But actual invasive pests are part of this story. Deadly Divide shows how cattle ticks, the body louse, foot-and-mouth disease, and the female Mexican fruit fly contributed to the to the ever-increasing racialization of Mexican migrants, which in turn led to increased policing, criminalization, and fears about immigrants infiltrating the US. As Mendoza follows the stories of migrants in relation to various species, Indigenous peoples, and officials on both sides of the border, she argues that the need for mobility overpowered both governments' laws, fences, and agents. At the same time, the border's symbolic power became a source of terror not only for migrants who try to cross into the US but for those who feel they cannot cross back, making the US a nation that suspends immigrants between two worlds.

Nestled between Brazil, Venezuela, and Suriname, Guyana is the third-smallest sovereign state in mainland South America, and one of its youngest. Originally a Dutch colony, Guyana remained under British rule from the late eighteenth century until gaining independence in 1966 and becoming a republic in 1970. Apart from the 1978 mass murder-suicide of cult leader Jim Jones's followers in Jonestown, Guyana has been mostly peripheral to mainstream geopolitics. Yet for a generation of Black revolutionaries from around the world, Guyana was a vibrant site of pan-African activism. The country was particularly attractive to veterans of the US civil rights movement who sought alternative places to construct flourishing postcolonial, pan-African nation-states.

In this first, comprehensive history of Guyana's core role in anticolonial, Black internationalist movements in the 1960s and 1970s, historian Russell Rickford?traces the history of African Americans who traveled to the country to work with, learn from, and teach Guyanese politicians, activists, and other international figures in the long fight for Black freedom. With encouragement from Prime Minister Forbes Burnham, they eagerly accepted the invitation to move to Guyana to establish new cooperative settlements. Rickford compellingly narrates Guyana's allure and promise for Black Americans, along with the limitations they faced when ideology clashed with lived realities-especially political ones-once there.

This collection explores the rise of feedback as a discursive practice in everyday life, examining diverse genres and sociocultural contexts.

The volume puts a focus on the "how" of feedback in a range of contexts and communicative settings. Genres examined include performance reviews and online consumer evaluations on such networked spaces as YouTube, Twitter, MOOCs, TripAdvisor, and Meituan, as well as other corporate contexts. Chapters also emphasize cross-cultural and cross-linguistic perspectives by highlighting data from seven different languages. The range of settings, languages, and formats allows for engagement in key questions around feedback as a sociocultural activity with ideological dimensions, such as the construction of authority in feedback, linguistic and cultural differences, and the role of social and economic factors.

This book will be of particular interest to students and scholars in discourse analysis, professional communication, pragmatics, sociolinguistics, and digital media.

This book reveals that caste, usually assumed to be a feature of Hindu society, was in fact a trans-religious phenomenon in colonial India, as it is today. Even in an Islamic religious milieu that was supposedly more egalitarian than hierarchical Hinduism, colonial Indian subjects thought and acted in terms of caste. Through a focus on one agrarian Muslim caste known as Arains, Ashish Koul shows how some Indian Muslims transmuted caste and emplaced it within their understanding of Islam. During this time, Arain Muslims were derogatively called mali- gardener-instead of what they wished to be seen as-respectable landholders. Seeking to refute such negative portrayals, a group of elite Arains came together to develop a new Islamic vocabulary for caste.

Using primary sources in English and Urdu, Koul analyzes the intricacies of caste, religion, and politics among Muslims in colonial India. By asserting that being Arain was a way of being a true Muslim, elite Arains were able to intervene in significant debates about Muslim identity, colonial law, and political representation. Reinventing Caste shows that in order to understand why caste persists among South Asians, we must examine how caste consciousness has been entrenched within multiple religious traditions.
