As the world wakes up to the incel problem following Netflix's Adolescence, many examples of research into incels over the past decade have been poorly conducted. Researching Incels is a crucial intervention into problematic incel research - calling for a new framework for rigorous, responsible research to inform policy on the incel crisis.
A critical overview on poor research examples using the primary case study of a report commissioned by the UK Government's Commission for Countering Extremism on predicting harm among involuntary celibates, the authors outline incel research that is methodologically flawed, unreliable, and normalizes misogyny. Focusing primarily on two critical flaws of researching incels - limited conceptualization leading to poor methodology; and positionality; they write from a feminist positioned critical analysis to offer a blueprint for the future of robust incel research in response to these limitations. This rebuttal is situated at the forefront of current polarizing debates developing within the incel community - emphasizing that incel research must address from a feminist perspective the underlying structural processes and ideologies that give authority and motivation to communities such as incels.
A "how to" guide for future research, Researching Incels also provides guidance for research, practice and policy on how to approach and assess existing work, with explicit caution where research is characterized by the limitations outlined here. Breaking new ground as the first broad commentary on researching incels, this is an essential roadmap for "Season Two" of incel research.

This book, as the first Chinese monograph on China's overseas study history published in 1927, draws on rich historical sources to explore a pivotal 1870 turning point: Imperial China's break with centuries of tradition to send promising young students to America, Europe and Japan, a last-ditch effort to catch up with the modern world. Authored by Shu Xincheng (1893-1960), this work carries an ambivalence that endures today: it recognizes the policy's revolutionary role in China's social progress and modernization, yet warns that entrusting Chinese youth's minds to foreign powers endangered their cultural identity. He argues overseas study should serve a strict purpose-acquiring advanced knowledge and technology to fuel China's pursuit of catching up with industrialized nations. Beyond documenting this historical initiative, the book illuminates a long-standing dilemma for China: balancing the quest for global knowledge with preserving national and cultural identity, a tension dating to Imperial times. This English translation offers scholars and graduate students valuable insights into the developmental route and underlying logic of China's historical "rejuvenation."

This book addresses the long-standing theoretical gap regarding the concepts of gender and religion within Norbert Elias's The Civilizing Process. In doing so, it not only revisits the evidence used by Elias in his original work but also introduces an alternative lens through which to view this long-term change: the rise and fall of witchcraft prosecutions. Through a comparative and detailed study of witchcraft prosecutions in England and Scotland, and their presentation within the public sphere, Lucy Cisar Brown develops a greater understanding of long-term transformations in the early modern period. The first consideration of this book is the centrality of religion to both medieval individuals and societal structures and their long-term transformation across the early modern period. The second consideration is whether the transformative processes of sociogenesis and psychogenesis can be applied in the same way to women as to the wider patriarchal society. In many respects these figurations are interdependent, both with each other and with the development of modern society, requiring a reassessment of the theoretical assumptions presented within The Civilizing Process. While detailed and comprehensive in many aspects of social development, the limitations of Eliasian social theory informs the fundamental character of this figurational analysis of early modern society.

How can we live together peacefully in all our diversity on a finite planet? This is one of the central questions of our century - and of this book. It reveals why today's environmental crisis, economic instability, democratic erosion, and international conflicts are symptoms of the same development logic and have deep cultural roots. Border walls and defence strategies will not shield us from this growing disorder, since its key drivers lie within our own society.
Neither artificial intelligence nor electric vehicles will save the world. This book proposes an expanded understanding of sustainability - closely linked with resilience and a good life that does not come at the expense of others. Sustainability requires cooperation over competition, a plural economy instead of a neoliberal monoculture, and bridges instead of walls. Since neither the state nor the market can adequately address the major challenges of this century, a sustainability transformation requires a radical democratisation of democracy - starting locally, based on broad social movements and new alliances.
Every great transformation in human history has been preceded and accompanied by a cultural revolution. This book shows why the same holds true for the sustainability transformation - and why education, science, the arts, and the media play a central role in it.
Davide Brocchi offers a fresh perspective and practical impulses for co-creating change rather than enduring it.

Chapters highlight how large groups of newly urbanized populations develop informal strategies to cope with extreme living conditions in poor neighborhoods or shantytowns. They illustrate how, amid violence and conflict, these populations create networks of solidarity, forms of resilience and political collectives that demand better living conditions and the right to the city. The book also assesses the ambivalent role of public policies in mitigating or exacerbating urban poverty and explores the emerging realities and trajectories of urban poverty.
A Modern Guide to Urban Poverty is a crucial resource for scholars and students of sociology, urban planning, human geography and anthropology. Its insights on the complex interplay of the social, economic and political processes that generate urban poverty are also highly relevant to policymakers and researchers in international NGOs.

This volume delves into intersections of identities in complex societies, which reproduce and cross symbolic boundaries and form as well as challenge power relations. The volume offers both descriptive and analytical contributions with evidence-based suggestions of the ways forward in the messy reality of human superdiversity. It comprises studies from across four continents (Africa, Asia, Europe, South America), and ensures a global scope. The common theme across chapters is their concentration on broadly understood intercultural encounters, their features and implications for the engaged parties. Thus, the recurring themes discussed in the chapters are relations between minority and majority groups, including the issues of migration and indigenous cultures, the dynamics of integration processes, and their impact on the cultural identity of the participants of intercultural encounters. Several of the chapters present a linguistic perspective of intercultural communication, referring to post-conflict and postcolonial contexts, and focus on language policy and the related tensions between the development of linguistic diversity and social cohesion. The chapter authors provide qualitative methodological approaches against theoretical frameworks, looking at particular case studies, and refer to sociological and psychological aspects of interculturalism, sociolinguistics, and concepts relating to cultural identity.
This interdisciplinary volume is of interest to a wide readership, including those coming from cultural studies, cultural psychology, discourse studies, identity research, and sociolinguistics.

Drawing on a rich comparative analysis of Central and Eastern European case studies, the book identifies three mechanisms that make implementation enduring: market incentives that link profitability with EU rules, broad cooperation among public and private actors, and assistance alliances connecting domestic and external stakeholders. The book shows how recent authoritarian and nationalist governance has disrupted these mechanisms, showing how centralisation and reduced stakeholder participation undermine market dynamics and cooperation. The book highlights that enduring implementation depends not on transposition alone but on aligning incentives, cooperation and external alliances to ensure EU rules remain feasible and resilient amid democratic and political shifts.
Cotta's insights will be essential reading for scholars of European integration, Europeanisation, policymaking, implementation, environmental policy, and Central and Eastern Europe. It also speaks to political economy researchers interested in the interplay between market incentives and cooperative policymaking. Beyond academia, this book offers valuable guidance for policymakers-including within the European Commission-as well as practitioners in waste management, environmental organisations, and international and domestic institutions seeking a deeper understanding of EU policy implementation on the ground.

Under the vast canopy of power, few ever grow tall. Yet in South Asia's political dynasties, Rajiv Gandhi, Benazir Bhutto, and Sheikh Hasina Wazed emerged not as saplings in their parents' shadow but as towering oaks in their own right. Each assumed national leadership at a younger age than their iconic predecessor, reshaping inherited legacies into personal mandates of transformation.
Their lives reveal the intimate convergence of bloodline and ballot, where family mythologies collide with democratic expectation. Their journeys, marked by privilege and peril, devotion and defiance, trace the delicate intersection of family legacy and public destiny. Together, they illuminate the paradox of dynastic democracy: the tension between inheritance and individuality, continuity and change, tragedy and triumph.
In them, the story of South Asia's modern politics becomes a story of resurrection, sacrifice, and reinvention under the weight of legacy.

This book presents the first comprehensive study of Mohammad Zahir Shah's forty-year reign, uncovering how conservative governance sustained the longest period of political stability in modern Afghan history. Challenging dominant narratives that portray Afghanistan as inherently unstable, it shows how Zahir Shah's pragmatic and traditionalist approach shielded the country from internal rebellion and foreign intervention amid the global crises of the Second World War and the Cold War until 1973. Drawing on a wide range of archival and scholarly sources in English, Persian, and Pashto, this volume offers a fresh and in-depth analysis of the last Afghan monarchy and the enduring lessons it offers for governance in Afghanistan.

A study of Ahmad Lutfi al-Sayyid, widely recognized as the creator of Egyptian nationalism, and his impact on Egyptian culture and history.
Ahmad Lutfi al-Sayyid (1872-1963) stands among the most creative, impactful intellectuals of modern Egypt and the Middle East. While best known as the architect of Egyptian nationalism, his nationalist endeavor was in fact part of his broader project to bring enlightenment to Egypt under the yoke of British colonialism. Through his articles, editorials, and mentoring, his newspaper al-Jarida became a key forum for the lively debates of the time, ranging from the role of Islam in society to women's inclusion, all toward shaping a unique colonial modernity for his country.
The most comprehensive study of Lutfi, his writing, and his impact, Enlightenment in Colonial Egypt deconstructs the view that he was a covert apologist for empire out of admiration for the liberal aspects of European enlightenment. Lutfi faced this duality head on: He believed it essential to embrace parts of the West's enlightenment values and to decolonize and Egyptianize them in order to establish an authentic, indigenous, Egyptian civilization, appropriate for modernity. Israel Gershoni and Molly Bernstein argue that Lutfi successfully engaged with these most difficult challenges, shaping a detailed plan to implement enlightenment in the Egyptian national context.

Examining the power of testimonios in illuminating political injustice in Latin America from the Cold War to the present.
During the Cold War, testimonio emerged as a powerful genre of political nonfiction in Latin America. Artists created first-person narratives of censorship and state violence, highlighting broader circumstances of oppression carried out by local right-wing oligarchies in collusion with the US empire. Decolonial Witnessing explores the continuing vitality of testimonio in the twenty-first century, as it has evolved into narratives contesting neoliberal dispossession and dispoasability.
Considering the cultural work of Ana Castillo, Regina JosE Galindo, Jayro Bustamante, Alberto Ledesma, Javier Zamora, Lila Downs, and others, Guadalupe Escobar shows how artists, authors, musicians, and filmmakers are using testimonial narratives to identify and resist the architecture of post-Cold War militarized democracy. Contemporary testimonios center migrant children, torture abolitionists, Indigenous land defenders-figures whose perspectives and, indeed, presence disrupt dominant paradigms of citizenship. Cast against the law, their stories-their memories-constitute a critical optic on the construction of belonging. In these acts of bearing witness, Escobar locates the possibility of a new, counterhegemonic political imagination.

A broad and accessible history of religion in Texas, from prehistory to the present.
From sprawling megachurches to religious billboards and towering steel crosses, religion quite literally looms over Texas. Christian nationalism determines the state's politics and, every school day, more than five million Texas children pledge allegiance to "one state under God." But it wasn't always this way.
In this wide-ranging chronicle, Joseph Locke uncovers the breadth of Texas's religious history, from Indigenous painters of cosmological cave art and Spanish invaders who constructed missions, to irreligious Anglo colonists, freethinking frontiersmen, Tejano folk saints, evangelical culture warriors, and Muslim immigrants. Locke traces the state's religious transformations across the centuries, bringing them to life through his depiction of compelling figures, like enslaved preacher Anderson Edwards, fighting fundamentalist J. Frank Norris, and celebrated humanitarian Sister Norma Pimentel, and gripping moments, such as the murder of atheist newspaperman William Cowper Brann and the siege of the Branch Davidian compound in Waco. Comprehensive, fast-paced, and highly readable, One State Under God reveals how the Lone Star State's spiritual path was blazed.

This book argues that the digital revolution constitutes an anthropological turning point in human history. It examines the rise of a new procedural humanity-Homo Externatus-born from a profound cultural shift between logos, the symbolic foundation of thought grounded in language, truth, causality, and meaning, and "arithmos", a procedural, a-semantic metaculture driven by calculation and correlation. Humanity is moving from a culture of differentiation, between true and false, good and evil, man and God, toward one of de-differentiation, where everything becomes calculable and thus comparable. Drawing on psychoanalysis, social theory, and geo-economic analysis, the book explores how digitalization, while seemingly unifying, actually fragments our "society of individuals"; and asks whether it might herald the advent of a new form of totalitarianism.
Scholars, researchers, and students in social sciences, digital studies, philosophy and psychoanalysis will find this book invaluable. It offers a unique blend of insights, combining social sciences with psychoanalysis to illuminate the new interplay between the psychic and the social in the digital age. This book is a must-read for anyone seeking to understand the transformative impact of digitalization on human psyche, thought and society.

The legal and societal implications for individuals experiencing infertility and considering various types of assisted reproductive technology have become increasingly complex in recent decades. New regulations surrounding surrogacy agreements have attempted to provide more protection to both surrogate mothers and prospective parents. To better understand this nuanced experience, this multidisciplinary volume focuses on families navigating these methods of reproduction.
In Pursuit of Parenthood: Infertility, Assisted Reproductive Technology, and Surrogacy covers a wide array of topics including infertility (e.g., psychological consequences, the social context, and relationship coping; surrogacy (international and domestic surrogacy, formal and informal surrogacy negotiations, LGBTQ+ families choosing surrogacy,) and fertility treatments (decisions to pursue in vitro fertilization, intrauterine insemination, and sperm donation, including financial, religious, and political limitations).

Documenting the rise and disillusionment of El Salvador's postwar activists in the face of populist authoritarian politics.
The conclusion of El Salvador's long civil war, in 1992, was supposed to bring about equality and political freedom. Leftist insurgents laid down arms, and the government formally embraced liberal ideals. Yet today, El Salvador is ruled by an authoritarian president who came to power via unconstitutional means. What went wrong?
Anthropologist and journalist Ellen Moodie embedded with indignados-young middle-class protestors, demanding that the government live up to its liberal commitments-to better understand the course of political change since the civil war. Yet the "post-postwar" generation is only the latest demographic disappointed with liberalism in practice. Their revolutionary predecessors responded to a twentieth-century "racial liberalism" that saw descendants of colonists "civilizing" Indigenous people while dispossessing them of lands and mobilizing them for labor. Today, the failure to make good on the promises of postwar liberalism has inspired robust support for strongman Nayib Bukele. Moodie argues that El Salvador's case, though inflected by local concerns, is not unique. Rather, it is another stark demonstration of how liberalism's imaginary social contract gives rise to populist authoritarianism.

How Cuba's contemporary mediascape is challenging official histories, recovering memories, and redefining identities
This volume shows how Cuban filmmakers, journalists, and activists use film and other digital media to create competing notions of memory and history that challenge official narratives about Cuban society. In the wake of the economic and ideological crises of Cuba's Special Period, suppressed political differences and personal experiences have resurfaced in the contemporary mediascape, which has become a principal political arena for Cubans both inside and outside the island.
In this volume, contributors examine topics including how filmmakers use audio to subvert official histories, media representations of sanatoriums and other settings at the margins of the Revolution, and a COVID-era digital archive that preserves personal memories outside government oversight. By tracing the interplay of film, digital technologies, and the internet, contributors reveal how alternative archives and online platforms resist state-sanctioned stories, circulate new materials, and broaden ideas of citizenship, time, and identity. Together, these essays offer fresh perspectives on the complexities of Cuba's late-socialist context.

Every member of the LGBTQ+ community has faced unique challenges when exploring their sexual identity, but for those in Southern African states, finding acceptance is often extremely difficult. Of the 61 United Nations member states that criminalize same-sex relations, more than half are African states. Influenced by different notions of culture, tradition and/or religion, the continued discrimination faced by the community has created an absence of research on Southern African narratives, until now.
Unveiling Identities bridges the gap between academic discourse and the lived experiences of the LGBTQ+ community, carefully researched and presented by scholars from across disciplines. The result is a startlingly honest account of the obstacles LGBTQ+ individuals must navigate in this specific geographic and cultural context. With chapters ranging from the legal landscape, the intersection of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, and the continued impact of activism and advocacy, editors Patsika, Naidoo, and Mutekwe curate a vivid exploration of the reasoning behind views of homosexuality amongst the African populous, driven by rigorous research.
This collective narrative is much needed in reducing the difference in focus on Southern Africa and the Global South more broadly in this space. The chapters offer a fresh perspective on the subject, but also a positive message of potential for the future. For those interested in African sexuality studies, Unveiling Identities is a title fuelled by enduring hope.

This book explores why Pentecostal Christianity has flourished in China more than nearly any other imported religious movement. Tracing its origins from the arrival of the first Pentecostal missionaries in 1907, this study shows how Pentecostal spirituality, particularly when experiential, emotional, and centered on the Holy Spirit, deeply resonated with Chinese cultural and religious traditions. This book argues that Pentecostalism succeeded in China because it both affirmed core values found in Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism, and harmonized with elements of Chinese popular religion. Drawing on key texts like the Mengzi, Zhuangzi, and the Platform Sutra, it highlights meaningful points of overlap without suggesting direct equivalence. By embracing supernatural and Spirit-centered practices, Pentecostal missionaries unintentionally fostered a flexible spiritual model that allowed Chinese converts to reinterpret existing beliefs rather than abandon them. The result is a uniquely Chinese Pentecostalism that's rooted in local culture yet global in reach. This is an important read for religious studies scholars and scholas of sociology interested in Chinese religion.
