Informative and enlightening, in Cicero's New Leadership Evan R.W. Dutmer explores an important ancient predecessor to mainstream leadership studies research. Using Marcus Tullius Cicero's On the Republic as a point of departure, Dutmer connects its vision for leadership with contemporary parallels, examining key virtues beneficial to both individuals and societies.

Dutmer introduces the term 'proto-transformational' to categorize Cicero's leadership theory, addressing the ancient biases present in his idealized leadership portraits. The book outlines how Cicero's ideal leaders are both ethical and effective: they act as authentic transformational leaders, selflessly serving the common good while demonstrating virtuous integrity in their words and actions. Dutmer also highlights how Cicero's model, which centers on the practice of the Cardinal Virtues, aligns with current character-focused leadership development frameworks. Chapters address the emerging developments in two crucial movements in modern leadership studies: transformational leadership and Leadership for Flourishing.

This book is an essential read for scholars and students of leadership theory, ethics, political science and political philosophy. By establishing Cicero as a significant leadership thinker, it will also appeal to those interested in applying such concepts to debates and areas of practical importance within law, religion and constitutions.

This volume (Parts A and B) contains 16 new studies that shed light on key aspects of immigration: the drivers of immigration, the factors fostering or hindering immigrant integration in the host country, and the impact of immigration in the host countries. The studies span a wide range of countries in Europe, North and South America and use novel administrative, regional and survey data to offer insights into historical and contemporary episodes of migration. Together, they enrich our understanding of the determinants and consequences of migration and provide an evidence base for policy discussions.

The volume covers three broad themes. In both Part A and B are eight papers on the integration of immigrants in the host society, focusing on the acquisition of human capital, labor supply, family formation, and returns to skills. Part B also studies the impact of immigration on outcomes that often dominate the public debate, namely employment, education, and crime. Published twice per year in conjunction with the Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA) Research in Labor Economics contains new cutting edge peer reviewed research applying economic theory and econometrics to policy related topics pertinent to worker well-being often with an international focus.

This timely book examines how Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries can successfully navigate the structural transformation towards a post-oil future. Moving beyond generalized policy prescriptions, it comprehensively explores crucial obstacles and opportunities to define a path forward for the GCC region.

Contributing authors demonstrate how meaningful income diversification requires a fundamental rewiring of the GCC's economic, institutional and social fabric. They address the entrenched structural challenges arising from the economic dominance of oil and gas, as well as the dominant role of the state and the nature of its sovereign wealth funds. The book emphasizes the importance of developing a dynamic private sector, cultivating human capital and redefining the social contract between the state and people. It also outlines key macroeconomic and institutional frameworks, providing specific sectoral strategies and innovative policy approaches focused on both economic diversification and sustainability.

Economic Challenges in the Gulf Cooperation Council Countries is an essential resource for scholars and students interested in the global transition following climate change. It will be of particular interest to those in the fields of Middle East studies and development and energy economics.

Emil Lederer, born in 1882 in Pilsen, ranks among the most influential economists and social scientists of his time. Christian Schneebeck provides the first comprehensive biography of Lederer. He traces Lederer's thought and intellectual development, as well as the formative influences on him, and repeatedly brings the person himself to the fore between work and theory. The author presents Lederer as an innovative, multifaceted, and still contemporary thinker whose scholarly ethos demands publicly advocating the insights he has gained. Lederer's intellectual formation took place around the turn of the century in Vienna, shaped by Marxism and marginal utility theory. Early on, he engaged at the intersection of scholarship and politics. As editorial secretary and later managing editor, he decisively shaped the Archiv fuer Sozialwissenschaft und Sozialpolitik. At the same time, he was active in Heidelberg, where he built influential circles of scholars and students. He repeatedly assumed political and academic responsibilities-serving on wartime economic commissions, socialization committees, and as a visiting professor in Tokyo. He examined the First World War intensively, not only in a now-famous essay on the sociology of war. Lederer also devoted himself early to the new business cycle theory, which made him a widely cited reference thinker in economics during the 1920s. And when Lederer, a converted Jew and outspoken socialist, fled to the United States in 1933 to escape the National Socialists, he examined from exile the characteristics and mechanisms of modern totalitarianism. Lederer died in 1939 in American exile.

This Handbook provides a systematic and comprehensive overview of resource nationalism, interrogating the scale and scope of how mineral-producing societies implement various forms of resource sovereignty. Leading experts in the field explore the theory, practice and historical evolution of resource nationalism across diverse geographies, commodities and time periods.

Contributing authors present a comparative assessment of international resource governance strategies, outlining the role of natural resources in shaping the global supply chains of energy transition and advanced manufacturing. Chapters consider legal, political economy and sociological dimensions, while examining the varying forms of state-society relations embedded in the extractives sector. The Handbook provides a commodity-specific analysis of resource governance and development, namely concerning the extraction of oil and gas, platinum group metals, tin and nickel. Drawing on key global case studies, it investigates the long-term implications of efforts to resolve the climate emergency whilst managing strategic competition among international powers.

The Handbook of Resource Nationalism is a valuable resource for scholars and students of comparative political economy, development studies, sociology and public policy. It is also highly relevant to policymakers, policy advocates and third sector researchers interested in understanding resource governance, politics, initiatives and outcomes.

This book demonstrates why "error minimization at the edge of chaos" is important and discusses its implementation in EMA (error-minimization algorithm), which is a descriptive apparatus that is applied to 27 languages. It claims that CHL emerges at the edge of chaos (the boundary of disorder and order), borrowing the terminology from Stuart Kauffman, a complex systems researcher. Morphosyntactic features signify disorder for CHL, CI, and SM because they are uninterpretable (chaotic; viral) for meaning-computation (CI) and sound-computation (SM). However, CHL is resilient in eliminating morphosyntactic features to restore order (create structures). This book proposes that CHL evolved as an error-minimizing system. Incidentally, error minimization is at the heart of mathematics, an artificial language. The target audience includes professional linguists, postgraduate students, and general readers who intend to understand the scientific significance of generative syntax.

What drives the long-term development of economies-and how does growth affect different segments of society?

This book redefines the theory of economic growth by moving beyond the traditional "average citizen" model. Instead, it introduces a dynamic framework that accounts for the diverse structure of real-world economies, dividing households into distinct groups based on income, consumption, and wealth.

Through rigorous modeling and analysis, the book explores how key factors-such as the economic growth rate and the return on capital-shape not only the overall trajectory of an economy but also the fortunes of its individual household groups. It demonstrates that when the return on capital exceeds the growth rate, wealth concentration intensifies-a finding that aligns with Thomas Piketty's influential empirical research. This book will appeal to economists, policymakers, and anyone interested in the forces that shape prosperity and inequality in modern societies.

This book provides a fresh and critical perspective on psychology by challenging its foundational assumptions through the lens of Cultural Psychology. Using a Brazilian metaphor of "peeling a pineapple" or descascar o abacaxi it unpacks the complexities of epistemological renewal in psychology-questioning taken-for-granted concepts, reconstructing theoretical frameworks, and emphasizing the role of culture in shaping human experiences. Inspired by a seminar course of the same title, this book explores four essential themes in psychology: Care and Education, Mental Health and Therapy, Self and Identity, and Relationships and Emotions. Each chapter revisits these areas from the ground up, highlighting their cultural underpinnings and questioning taken-for-granted assumptions. The book showcases discussions and reflections that emerged from classroom debates, emphasizing the importance of meaning-making and developmental perspectives in psychology. Epistemological renewal is at the heart of this book. It refers to the process of reevaluating, updating, and transforming the ways knowledge is produced, justified, and disseminated within psychology and the broader human sciences. By questioning dominant paradigms, integrating interdisciplinary perspectives, and engaging with diverse cultural practices, this volume challenges mainstream psychological approaches that often overlook meaning-making processes and the socio-cultural contexts of human development. Just as peeling a pineapple requires patience and precision to access its core, epistemological renewal demands intellectual curiosity, reflexivity, and a willingness to deconstruct established paradigms. By peeling back the layers of conventional psychological constructs, the authors expose the limitations of universalist assumptions and propose alternative pathways for knowledge production.

Firmly based on ancient literature and material evidence, this illustrated biography assesses the life of Agrippina the Younger (15-59 CE). Agrippina was declared "unique" by Tacitus, ancient Rome's most insightful political historian, both for her own political standing and as the daughter of a triumphing general and the sister, wife, and mother of emperors--respectively, Caligula (r. 37-41), Claudius (r. 41-54), and Nero (r. 54-68). Tacitus and other ancient historians depict her with horrified fascination as they vividly chart her growing presence through tumultuous vicissitudes, ending with her murder by her son Nero in 59. Documentary evidence corroborates Agrippina as extraordinary. Among other "firsts," she is the first woman to be portrayed and identified on coins while alive; the first woman whose name is given to a veteran colony; and she appeared in more numerous statuary installations than known for earlier women. Agrippina's life sheds light on Rome's evolution into a monarchy dominated by her family; it also illuminates the endurance of Rome's ancestral patriarchy, showing the tight limits of power even for imperial women. Assessment of her reception up to the twentieth century highlights the importance of Tacitus for our understanding of this remarkable political creature. Neither damning nor glorifying Agrippina, this biography sensitively relies on ancient evidence to tell her story.

This volume guides readers through the dynamic field of applied developmental science while explaining the importance of conducting research across diverse contexts. The first part begins with a review of relevant theoretical perspectives and then defines diverse contexts along two dimensions: the backgrounds and identities of the children and families who participate in developmental research, and the lived environments that those children and families inhabit, from their homes and schools to juvenile justice and child welfare service settings. The second part turns first to the designs, measures, and analytic approaches that developmental researchers may employ in applied settings, with an emphasis on the methodological issues that are more likely to arise when research is conducted in real-world environments. It then addresses how applied developmental researchers are currently trained, and outlines how those training approaches will need to adapt to promote a more equitable, responsive, and relevant science. The final part of the book focuses on why it is essential that developmental research is conducted in diverse contexts if that research is to yield findings that are broadly generalizable, and presents strategies intended to maximize the likelihood that applied developmental science will fulfil its promise to improve the lives of children and families. The book's final chapter reviews the landscape of applied developmental science and the different professional roles that applied developmental researchers may choose to inhabit throughout their careers. Written in an approachable style, and featuring interviews with applied developmental scientists working in a range of settings, Conducting Applied Developmental Science in Diverse Contexts will appeal to students and scholars across a wide range of disciplines including psychology, sociology, anthropology, human development, social work, and education.

This book offers an insight into current-day Student as Partners (SaP) practice, presenting reflections by staff and students from global institutions. Student as Partners (SaP) is a practice that involves creating partnerships with students to create their learning journey. It enables student empowerment by giving them agency and a space creating student voice, and allows for close connections and quick feedback on teaching practices and policies. In the past ten years, there has been a rise in SaP practices in Australian higher education institutes, and a swell in dedicated scholarship from educators and researchers, reflecting an appetite for student-led approaches to higher education. Born from the (inter) national Students as Partners Roundtable from 2023, this book engages with "Respect, Reciprocity and Responsibility" (Cook-Sather et al., 2014) as central themes within Student-Staff partnerships. It brings together reflections from students and educators, as well as doctoral candidates operating in a sort of "middle ground." This book also expands on current literature, with reflections on SaP practices across the Asia-Pacific region sitting alongside those from the United Kingdom, North America, and South Africa.

Drawing on anti-colonial theory, they challenge the Eurocentric, patriarchal and imperial structures that continue to impact schooling, knowledge production and educational practice.

Through diverse case studies and perspectives, contributors reimagine education as a space of liberation, relationality and decolonial transformation. Chapters analyse pressing global issues ranging from epistemic violence to the carceral logics of schooling, while promoting Indigenous, Black and Global South epistemologies. Combining theory, activism and artistic expression, this book demonstrates that anti-colonial education is not just a critique but a call to action.

Understanding Anti-Colonial Education is a crucial resource for students and scholars across education studies who are interested in decolonial pedagogy. It is also an essential read for practitioners, policymakers and activists seeking to revolutionise educational futures.

When war came to the nation in 1861, Michiganians rallied around the Stars and Stripes and readily agreed with a veteran politician who declared, "He who is not for his country is against her." Even as the conflict grew bloody and costly, they remained committed to suppressing the rebellion. By war's end, an astonishing 50 percent of its military-age males had enlisted in the army. This Michigan Civil War chronicle is more than a story about soldiers' heroism on distant battlefields. It also includes the often-overlooked role of women-some of whom refused to stay home and went to war. Also buried in the historical record are accounts of white soldiers whose views on slavery and African Americans, especially those in uniform, were transformed. There is also a much-needed exploration of Michigan's response to the shocking assassination of a beloved president. Many a Hand captures these stories in a single volume.

This insightful book provides a detailed explanation of the definitions, applications and relevance of parasocial relationships in contemporary society. Gayle Stever outlines the extensive history of parasocial studies and analyses core psychological principles surrounding the subject, including psychological, developmental and attachment theories.

Informed by Horton and Wohl's seminal article in 1956 and the research of Jung, Allport, Erikson and Tajfel, chapters explore parasocial theory in social media, fandoms, diverse populations and various media formats. Stever focuses in particular on the role of the celebrity in parasocial communication and how parasocial theory relates to social media influencers. The book investigates the potential negative sides of parasocial relationships, including anti-fandom, while also assessing the positive and personal applications of parasocial theory to people's daily lives.

Understanding Parasocial Relationships is a valuable resource for students and scholars of media, psychology, communication, sociology, anthropology, cultural studies and business. Its evaluation of the psychology of audience reactions will also benefit journalists and researchers interested in media, celebrity and fandom.

Academic Languaging and Historical Thinking prepares teachers to assess where students are in their written and critical thinking skills and to develop the art of teaching historical argumentative writing to students. The use of effective language to communicate historical, social, and civic arguments is a key competence future citizens need, and teaching writing through history is especially effective because of the grounded nature of historical documentation and the balance between clear facts and blurrier areas of interpretation.

Starting with a pedagogical approach, the book takes readers through research on the relationship between language and writing, the ways that historians make claims and the kinds of evidence they use, and how to successfully find and evaluate sources. It then offers instructional activities and strategies that center around key disciplinary practices in historical argumentation: making claims, sourcing and integrating evidence, presenting reasoning, and addressing counterarguments. These activities can be easily modified for different teaching and learning contexts, including supporting multilingual learners of English. Whether readers are practicing teachers, pre-service teachers, or instructional coaches, this book will help them learn how to integrate academic language skills with argument writing instruction in history to teach students to be confident academic writers and competent language users.

Becoming an academic can be an overwhelming, if not a completely consuming, experience, and conceptualising this process is often fraught with a lack of understanding of both the process and the subsequent implications. Many academics struggle with the notion of who they are, despite believing that they are aware of who they want to be and where they are situated on their academic journey.

This edited collection draws on the experiences of early and mid-career academics, as well as leaders in the field, to explore the role and contribution of the self when professionally undertaking research. Each chapter addresses valuable questions for academics to examine and articulate the self in one's work, and encourages the probing of the impact of academic engagement in higher education on individual fidelity to personal and professional values, beliefs and assumptions. With a focus on self-methodologies, including arts-based approaches to reflective and reflexive practice, the authors showcase methods that go beyond traditional reflective practice and explore the interplay of arts and self-practices.

Conceptualising the Academic Self offers transformative educational insights with both theoretical and practical applications. It serves as a comprehensive guide for novice academics to seasoned educators and researchers, as well as institutional leaders and policy influencers, addressing the challenges of self-conceptualisation and self-formation.

Greek and Romance dialects in southern Italy have been in intensive contact with one another for centuries, leading to convergence in their grammars in many key respects that are too striking to be dismissed as accidental. This volume investigates fundamental research questions relating to the exact nature of these Greek and Romance contact grammars, which present a unique opportunity to study, test, and challenge theories of contact-induced morphosyntactic change. They serve as an experimental laboratory in which minimal grammatical differences between two highly homogeneous linguistic systems can reveal what precisely may vary and which linguistic mechanisms underpin that variation. Moreover, Greek and Romance have been spoken alongside each other for centuries in two separate linguistic 'islands' of southern Italy which have themselves never been in contact with one another: this allows a valuable comparison between different outcomes and scenarios of linguistic change and variation involving the same phenomena and the same language families across two otherwise very similar contact situations. Despite a wealth of phonetic and lexical research, there is still remarkably very little known about the morphosyntax and the potential areas of contact and interference between these two linguistic groups. These scarcely investigated areas of variation and contact are explored in detail in this book through a series of case studies from the nominal, sentential, and clausal domains, with the aim of presenting the first integrated and comparative account of Greek and Romance morphosyntactic contact in southern Italy. By bringing together the best in traditional dialectological scholarship with the state-of-the-art in formal analysis, the interpretation and assessment of the Greek and Romance linguistic evidence presented in this book makes a fundamental contribution to current linguistic theories and to the understanding of microvariation and the mechanisms and processes involved in contact-induced language change.

This book presents cutting-edge research on simultaneous interpreting based on a multimodal corpus. It examines various aspects of pausing, an important non-verbal feature, such as its frequency, duration, and syntactic distribution in professional interpreters' English-to-Chinese simultaneous interpreting. In addition to describing the pause characteristics, the book investigates their connections with interpreters' behavior and cognition. It also introduces the procedures for constructing a multimodal simultaneous interpreting corpus and the analytical methods used in its application. As one of the first books to employ in-depth multimodal corpus analysis in the study of simultaneous interpreting, it advances corpus-based interpreting research and serves as a valuable reference for scholars in the field.

This book addresses contemporary translator training, discussing the various ways translators (and other language professionals) acquire and perfect their skills in rapidly evolving markets and a complex global context. The authors examine formal and more 'traditional' types of training, such as postgraduate degree and certificate programs, but also examine and propose alternative types of knowledge acquisition and skills-building, such as ongoing professional development, workshops, peer-to-peer learning, and community-based or non-academic initiatives. The book critically examines translator training (in a broad sense) in Canada, though the chapters will be applicable and relevant in other contexts, especially bi- and multi-lingual settings. The fact that Canada's demolinguistic profile is increasingly heterogenous suggests that the need for translation and multilingual communication - and thus adequately trained language/multilingual professionals - is not only real, but pressing, a situation mirrored in other regions around the world. This book's findings will be relevant to academics, students, and practitioners in fields including Translation Studies, Professional Education, Additional Language Learning, Canadian Studies, and Language Policy and Planning.

This project was an equal collaboration of Renee Desjardins and Valerie Florentin.

In 1967, the Russian writer and dissident Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn wrote, 'Looking back, even a fool would have been able to predict it today: the Soviet regime could certainly have been breached only by literature.' In Writing the Nation after Stalin, Erin Hutchinson tells the story of a multiethnic cohort of young Soviet writers from villages who set out to remedy a social injustice--the oppression of the peasantry under Stalin--and ended up challenging the Soviet state. Their literary works, published within the official system, praised national values and traditional village culture and helped fuel a resurgence of ethno-nationalism in the USSR. In the late 1980s, several village writers became leaders in the nationalist movements that helped trigger the break-up of the Soviet Union. In a communist country that prided itself on being 'the most well-read in the world', literature was always political. But how was it possible to publish literary works that challenged Marxist-Leninist ideology in an authoritarian, communist country? Writing the Nation after Stalin traces the lives of a generation of writers as they abandoned the violence and poverty of the Stalin-era village in search of literary fame. Drawing on fresh archival material from Russia, Ukraine, Armenia, and Moldova, Hutchinson reveals how these rural migrants navigated the complicated world of Soviet cultural politics and pushed for change despite harsh censorship. This book tells a new story about the reemergence of nationalism in the USSR after Stalin's death through an array of sources in four languages, including archival documents, diaries, memoirs, letters, novels, and KGB reports. As Hutchinson shows, nationalism spread through central Soviet institutions originally designed to suppress it. Ideas developed in one Soviet republic quickly gained popularity in others. Although the development of nationalism in the USSR was surprisingly internationalist, it nevertheless put these national groups on a collision course in the late 1980s. Writing the Nation after Stalin is a reminder that we are still living in the world that Soviet literature helped create.

On 23 October 1956, Hungarian students staged a peaceful demonstration in Budapest, trying to publicize their specific demands for change. By nighttime, frustrated by hardline speeches and lack of response by the leadership, they toppled Stalin's bronze monument. Hours later, Soviet tanks rolled in. The first Soviet military intervention had begun. The Hungarian Revolution of 1956 was not an isolated revolt but a transnational rupture--one of the first major fissures in the Soviet bloc that reshaped dissent and repression across Eastern Europe for decades. But how did the youth across the communist bloc actually respond? The popular reactions to Hungary 1956 were far from uniform in the Soviet Union and people's democracies. Many youth in communist organizations, like the Komsomol, applauded the Soviet military invasion as 'restoring order'. Some blamed Nikita Khrushchev, claiming that if Joseph Stalin had lived, the Hungarian uprising of 1956 could have been prevented. Others were indifferent or disapproved in silence. Sensitive youth contributed to debates, but then after sharp rebukes, retreated into shame-based self-censoring. Still other independent-thinking youth, probably a minority, spread leaflets or essays demanding change. Nationalists adopted new legalist strategies. Regimes responded with both crackdowns and concessions. Drawing on memoirs and documents from secret police and Communist Party archives, The Hungarian Revolution of 1956: Tremors in the Soviet Bloc offers the first single-authored, archive-based comparative study of elite and popular reactions across East Germany, Austria, Romania, Soviet Ukraine, and Soviet Russia, both Moscow and Leningrad, as well as the Urals and Siberian regions. Moving beyond Cold War binaries and single-country case studies, this book examines both similarities and differences in how citizens and regimes reacted to the Hungarian revolt of 1956 and the Soviet military intervention. The lessons of 1956 are still relevant in today's struggles against oppressive regimes.
