How do you reconcile imperial power with the nation-state? This study explores the enduring legacy of German colonialism, tracing the imperial origins of the German nation-state as it emerged in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Following unification under Prussian leadership, Germany expanded overseas to assert its place among the global powers. The resulting colonial empire left lasting imprints not only on local communities in Africa, the Pacific, and China but also on the German metropole itself. Drawing on a wide range of primary sources from European and African archives, Matthias Leanza demonstrates how the challenges of colonial governance prompted domestic reforms that reshaped the political arena, strengthened federal authority over the states, and sharpened national identity. While Germany's overseas ambitions ended abruptly with the First World War, the legacy of empire endured, embedded within the structures of the nation-state.

This book provides a twofold critique of mainstream political theory, drawing on feminisms to develop a more comprehensive understanding of migration. Grounded in both a critical cosmopolitan approach and the ethics and politics of care, the book shows what a feminist approach to migration would look like. The author focuses on migrants' perspectives and places ideas around dispossession and exclusion at the centre of the argument. The book is a valuable resource for scholars and practitioners who seek to understand the relationship between migration and gendered human experiences.

Eric McDonnell offers a detailed analysis of the literary functions of the three psalms that open the Masoretic Psalter, employing diachronic, comparative and literary-theoretical methods. Beginning with a discussion of the preface in the sense articulated by Jacques Derrida and Gerard Genette, the author distinguishes primary, introductory and prefatorial functions that texts may assume at the threshold of larger compositions. On this basis, Ps 1 and 2 appear as a two-part prefatorial paratext shaping the literary and theological orientation of the emerging Psalter, while Ps 3 serves a different function by introducing the general form of the individual lament, reflecting an early preexilic stage of the collection.
A comparative examination of the Gilgamesh Epic, the Egyptian Book of the Dead and Sirach shows how ancient textual collections reuse traditional materials to advance new literary and ideological purposes, a process described as iterative play in conversation with Derrida and Hans-Georg Gadamer. The author then reviews three influential accounts of the literary development of the Masoretic Psalter and presents an alternative reconstruction that builds on the preceding analyses. Eric McDonnell thus highlights the close relation between synchronic readings and diachronic analysis and demonstrates how both perspectives contribute to understanding the shape and shaping of the Masoretic Psalter.

A leading authority on the archaeology of Florida tells the story of the state's past as a Spanish colony

Florida is the state with the oldest recorded history of European contact, beginning with the arrival of Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon more than five centuries ago-but many people don't know the full story of Florida during this momentous time. Engagingly written and extensively illustrated, Early Spanish Florida delves into archaeological discoveries to uncover the 250-year history of Spanish colonization on the peninsula.

Judith Bense, a lifelong archaeologist and expert on Spanish Florida, traces the story from 1513 when Ponce de Leon accidentally landed on "La Florida" to 1763 when Spain lost the land to Britain after the Seven Years' War. Bense explores how the first Spanish settlers tried to colonize Florida with aims to take over the entire Southeast, encountering harsh weather, competing colonizing nations, and Native resistance. The story includes the establishment of St. Augustine in 1565, shipwrecks of early explorers and colonists, the building of Catholic missions in the 1600s, and the journeys of people of African descent escaping slavery on northern plantations.

The events in Early Spanish Florida are told from the perspectives of the intertwined groups of people whose interactions created deep cultural changes, including Spanish, Indigenous, and African communities. Filled with maps and images of artifacts, excavations, historical sites, and original documents, and featuring suggested readings and places to visit, this book offers a wealth of knowledge and sparks enduring interest in Florida's past.

A tribute to the distinguished diplomatic historian, Professor Michael Dockrill (1936-2018), this collection provides a comprehensive overview of the field of twentieth-century British foreign and defence policy. With contributions from the most esteemed academic thinkers in the field, this collection will be of great value to anyone interested in British foreign and strategic policy, whether they are a senior academic or an undergraduate researcher. In memory of the late Professor Dockrill, the essays place British foreign policy in a wide range of geographical, thematic and chronological perspectives.

Volume I examines international diplomacy in relation to the conduct of the First World War, the peace-making process that followed it, and the origins of the Second World War, mapping very closely to the interests of Professor Dockrill in the early stages of his career. Focusing on Great Power diplomacy seen through the lens of bi-lateral relations between states, the essaysexplore Britain's relations not only with European powers, but also with the United States and Japan. The views and operations of the British Foreign Office feature heavily, as do the lives and opinions of diplomats, primarily from the British Diplomatic Service, during the years 1890-1939. Analysing British strategic thinking around war and its consequences, this collection sheds light on the first steps in the evolution of international bodies built to preserve order around the world.

This book addresses the need for an exploration of indigenous knowledge of psychological healing within the context of African cultures and politics and afterlives of colonial historical harms. Taking into account the various abuses to which the discipline of psychology in Africa has been put, it focuses on closing the gap between theory and practice, and examines the manifestation of coloniality and colonialism for Africa. In this regard, it demonstrates that African psychology must be embedded within the cosmologies of Africentric and Afrocentric thought. It interrogates the area of therapeutic practice, while incorporating it an empirical context. Both researchers and practitioners interested in African psychology will find a thoughtful and scientifically -based exploration of this area.

Lacan on the Road explores a large number of talks, lectures, and interviews that Jacques Lacan gave away from his famous seminar in Paris. As well as providing an opportunity to examine some lesser-known works of Lacan, the book specifically seeks to explore how Lacan's rhetoric and style changed for various audiences.

Sometimes, Lacan used talks away from his seminar to summarize current developments from his teaching and state them more succinctly and aphoristically. At other times, he used the opportunity of talking to an unfamiliar audience to announce completely new ideas. Readers familiar with the seminars will know that Lacan often came back invigorated from trips abroad or even from locales closer to home, such as Belgium and Italy. This book provides the opportunity to examine what he said on those occasions when he was away. What emerges here, then, is rich and rewarding supplemental body of Lacan's work.

In the 1870s, an Italian lawyer named Bartolo Longo began building a shrine to Our Lady of the Rosary next to the ruined ancient city of Pompeii. Over the following decades, this shrine grew into one of the most important Catholic pilgrimage sites in Italy, with a whole new city developing around it. Our Lady of Pompeii: Ruins, Religion, and Memory tells the story of Bartolo Longo's shrine, focusing on its relationship with the neighbouring archaeological site. In six chapters, and with the help of more than fifty photographs and maps, it shows how ancient Pompeii gradually became part of the shrine's identity, providing inspiration for the artists, writers, and pilgrims who were drawn to the shrine and the miracle-working image of Our Lady that was housed there. The book reveals the ambivalent attitude of Bartolo Longo and his collaborators to the classical past, which was seen in both positive and negative terms-that is, as an object of fascination and antiquarian curiosity, and as the dead and dusty 'land of idols and demons'. By tracing the history of this shrine and the people who lived, worked, and worshipped there, the book also gives a valuable new perspective on ancient Pompeii, showing how this renowned archaeological site continues to hold meaning for people around the world today, and how-through religion and memory-it becomes intertwined with their own lives and personal histories.

This book examines how concepts from the life sciences are reshaping contemporary understandings of education and learning. Scholars from diverse disciplines explore the historical roots and global spread of the 'biological turn' that has transformed how education is defined and administered, highlighting its promises and its risks.

Contributors assess how biological reasoning applies to ideas of equity, potential and governance. They identify continuities between past biological rationalities, such as eugenics, and contemporary developments including educational genomics and neuroscience. Through its chapters, the volume examines how the biological turn in education has emerged, what drives it, and what its wide-ranging consequences may be, asking whether it marks a fundamental change in thinking or a reconfiguration of established ideas. Ultimately, the book advances research in this field, providing fresh insights into how biology is becoming intertwined with education's social and political purposes.

The Biological Turn in Education Policy is a key resource for scholars and students of education policy, comparative and international education, sociology and public policy and politics. The book's analysis of the diffusion of global policy paradigms and the role of expertise and science in governance will also benefit policymakers in international organisations, national ministries and local authorities.

Analyzing how artists reimagine migrant disappearance and visibility at the US-Mexico border.

In the mid-1990s, the US government implemented Prevention through Deterrence, a major buildup of troops, walls, and surveillance around El Paso and San Diego. Cut off from these crucial urban crossings, migrants flowed into the dangerous surrounding deserts, where some ten thousand have since died. This is all according to plan: Pentagon documents describe the strategy of funneling migrants toward "mortal danger."

In this bracing critique, China Medel explores the aesthetics enabling and resisting the crisis of migrant death. The nation-state's performance of sovereignty along the border, predicated on mass casualties, is tolerated and even celebrated, thanks to the images in our heads of racialized and therefore criminal bodies, made invisible as they disintegrate in the baking sand. Spectral Aesthetics shows how state officials and mainstream media, relying on postracial ideologies and white-supremacist agendas, collectively foster this picture of a brown body so abject that it is disposable. In close readings of artworks contesting this murderous visual regime, Medel discovers an alternative kind of sight, one emphasizing the ghostly traces of the dead. These are images not of the individual "alien" but of life itself, indisposable.

A history of European immigrants in Texas and how they redefined racial identity.

While the creation of a Black-White racial binary was foundational to most of the United States, nineteenth-century Texas developed a unique tripartite system that acknowledged the role of individuals of Mexican ancestry in a region that was Spanish, Mexican, and an independent nation before becoming a US (and briefly Confederate) state. Yet this framework was fraught, struggling to accommodate new arrivals from beyond North America, in particular the Irish, Germans, and Czechs. Texan Crucible tells the story of these immigrants and how they became Anglo.

Marian Barber reveals the ways language, religion, alcohol use, and attitudes toward slavery distinguished these newcomers to Texas from those arriving from the eastern United States and how they nevertheless created thriving, influential communities. Their status was shaped by events inside and far beyond Texas, including an 1887 prohibition fight, the Civil War, and two world wars that encouraged them to erase their distinctiveness. As segregation was formally outlawed and civil rights activism grew, understandings of race shifted, cementing these groups' status as Anglo. Texan Crucible recovers the histories of German, Irish, and Czech immigrants and unveils the social construction of racial difference underpinning Texan identity.

This timely book explores the fast-developing research landscape of social psychology theory in relation to the media. David Giles and Jennifer Johnston collate expert contributions examining the powerful influence of media on our thoughts, attitudes, and identities, seeking to understand how this can be studied.

Chapters outline the application of new theoretical approaches to key topics such as news media, fandoms, social media, and parasocial interaction, examining how people incorporate media into their network of relationships and identities. The contributing authors explore how the multiplicity of modern media can simultaneously reproduce and yet reduce stereotypes, exclude as well as include marginalized groups, and encourage as well as discourage political activism. Reviewing the current challenges and opportunities present in conducting effective social research on media-related topics, they argue for the necessity of increasing media literacy, emphasizing the importance of taking back control of the media that surrounds us.

This Research Handbook is an essential resource for academics and researchers in psychology, sociology, and communication and media studies who are interested in the application of social psychology to media.

This Element introduces the conceptualization of language weaponization, examining how dominant groups use language to control, marginalize, and harm minoritized communities. It proposes a three-phase framework- (1) stigmatization and othering, (2) dehumanization, and (3) harm-to explain how linguistic practices evolve from prejudice to violence, shaping both social structures and individual identities. Through analysis of the dynamics between dominant and minoritized groups and case studies focused on LGBTQ+ communities, the Element reveals the historical and ongoing consequences of weaponized language. Moving beyond critique, it advances a vision for transformation by positioning applied linguists as central actors in promoting societal healing. Further, storytelling is presented as a vital practice for (re)humanization and collective restoration. Ultimately, this Element invites readers to critically examine how language constructs power and to imagine its potential as a force for healing, peace, and goodness across diverse societies.

Greek and Romance dialects in southern Italy have been in intensive contact with one another for centuries, leading to convergence in their grammars in many key respects that are too striking to be dismissed as accidental. This volume investigates fundamental research questions relating to the exact nature of these Greek and Romance contact grammars, which present a unique opportunity to study, test, and challenge theories of contact-induced morphosyntactic change. They serve as an experimental laboratory in which minimal grammatical differences between two highly homogeneous linguistic systems can reveal what precisely may vary and which linguistic mechanisms underpin that variation. Moreover, Greek and Romance have been spoken alongside each other for centuries in two separate linguistic 'islands' of southern Italy which have themselves never been in contact with one another: this allows a valuable comparison between different outcomes and scenarios of linguistic change and variation involving the same phenomena and the same language families across two otherwise very similar contact situations. Despite a wealth of phonetic and lexical research, there is still remarkably very little known about the morphosyntax and the potential areas of contact and interference between these two linguistic groups. These scarcely investigated areas of variation and contact are explored in detail in this book through a series of case studies from the nominal, sentential, and clausal domains, with the aim of presenting the first integrated and comparative account of Greek and Romance morphosyntactic contact in southern Italy. By bringing together the best in traditional dialectological scholarship with the state-of-the-art in formal analysis, the interpretation and assessment of the Greek and Romance linguistic evidence presented in this book makes a fundamental contribution to current linguistic theories and to the understanding of microvariation and the mechanisms and processes involved in contact-induced language change.

This book presents cutting-edge research on simultaneous interpreting based on a multimodal corpus. It examines various aspects of pausing, an important non-verbal feature, such as its frequency, duration, and syntactic distribution in professional interpreters' English-to-Chinese simultaneous interpreting. In addition to describing the pause characteristics, the book investigates their connections with interpreters' behavior and cognition. It also introduces the procedures for constructing a multimodal simultaneous interpreting corpus and the analytical methods used in its application. As one of the first books to employ in-depth multimodal corpus analysis in the study of simultaneous interpreting, it advances corpus-based interpreting research and serves as a valuable reference for scholars in the field.

This book addresses contemporary translator training, discussing the various ways translators (and other language professionals) acquire and perfect their skills in rapidly evolving markets and a complex global context. The authors examine formal and more 'traditional' types of training, such as postgraduate degree and certificate programs, but also examine and propose alternative types of knowledge acquisition and skills-building, such as ongoing professional development, workshops, peer-to-peer learning, and community-based or non-academic initiatives. The book critically examines translator training (in a broad sense) in Canada, though the chapters will be applicable and relevant in other contexts, especially bi- and multi-lingual settings. The fact that Canada's demolinguistic profile is increasingly heterogenous suggests that the need for translation and multilingual communication - and thus adequately trained language/multilingual professionals - is not only real, but pressing, a situation mirrored in other regions around the world. This book's findings will be relevant to academics, students, and practitioners in fields including Translation Studies, Professional Education, Additional Language Learning, Canadian Studies, and Language Policy and Planning.

This project was an equal collaboration of Renee Desjardins and Valerie Florentin.

In 1967, the Russian writer and dissident Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn wrote, 'Looking back, even a fool would have been able to predict it today: the Soviet regime could certainly have been breached only by literature.' In Writing the Nation after Stalin, Erin Hutchinson tells the story of a multiethnic cohort of young Soviet writers from villages who set out to remedy a social injustice--the oppression of the peasantry under Stalin--and ended up challenging the Soviet state. Their literary works, published within the official system, praised national values and traditional village culture and helped fuel a resurgence of ethno-nationalism in the USSR. In the late 1980s, several village writers became leaders in the nationalist movements that helped trigger the break-up of the Soviet Union. In a communist country that prided itself on being 'the most well-read in the world', literature was always political. But how was it possible to publish literary works that challenged Marxist-Leninist ideology in an authoritarian, communist country? Writing the Nation after Stalin traces the lives of a generation of writers as they abandoned the violence and poverty of the Stalin-era village in search of literary fame. Drawing on fresh archival material from Russia, Ukraine, Armenia, and Moldova, Hutchinson reveals how these rural migrants navigated the complicated world of Soviet cultural politics and pushed for change despite harsh censorship. This book tells a new story about the reemergence of nationalism in the USSR after Stalin's death through an array of sources in four languages, including archival documents, diaries, memoirs, letters, novels, and KGB reports. As Hutchinson shows, nationalism spread through central Soviet institutions originally designed to suppress it. Ideas developed in one Soviet republic quickly gained popularity in others. Although the development of nationalism in the USSR was surprisingly internationalist, it nevertheless put these national groups on a collision course in the late 1980s. Writing the Nation after Stalin is a reminder that we are still living in the world that Soviet literature helped create.

On 23 October 1956, Hungarian students staged a peaceful demonstration in Budapest, trying to publicize their specific demands for change. By nighttime, frustrated by hardline speeches and lack of response by the leadership, they toppled Stalin's bronze monument. Hours later, Soviet tanks rolled in. The first Soviet military intervention had begun. The Hungarian Revolution of 1956 was not an isolated revolt but a transnational rupture--one of the first major fissures in the Soviet bloc that reshaped dissent and repression across Eastern Europe for decades. But how did the youth across the communist bloc actually respond? The popular reactions to Hungary 1956 were far from uniform in the Soviet Union and people's democracies. Many youth in communist organizations, like the Komsomol, applauded the Soviet military invasion as 'restoring order'. Some blamed Nikita Khrushchev, claiming that if Joseph Stalin had lived, the Hungarian uprising of 1956 could have been prevented. Others were indifferent or disapproved in silence. Sensitive youth contributed to debates, but then after sharp rebukes, retreated into shame-based self-censoring. Still other independent-thinking youth, probably a minority, spread leaflets or essays demanding change. Nationalists adopted new legalist strategies. Regimes responded with both crackdowns and concessions. Drawing on memoirs and documents from secret police and Communist Party archives, The Hungarian Revolution of 1956: Tremors in the Soviet Bloc offers the first single-authored, archive-based comparative study of elite and popular reactions across East Germany, Austria, Romania, Soviet Ukraine, and Soviet Russia, both Moscow and Leningrad, as well as the Urals and Siberian regions. Moving beyond Cold War binaries and single-country case studies, this book examines both similarities and differences in how citizens and regimes reacted to the Hungarian revolt of 1956 and the Soviet military intervention. The lessons of 1956 are still relevant in today's struggles against oppressive regimes.

An account of the extraordinary period between July 25, 1943, when Mussolini's deposal was announced, and September 8, 1943, when the Italian state disintegrated, told through the voices of ordinary people At 10:47 PM on July 25, 1943, Italians were suddenly compelled to confront Fascism as the past. An extraordinary radio broadcast announced to the nation that Benito Mussolini had been removed from office. Moments later, millions took to the streets in celebration, smashing statues, burning Fascist Party cards, chanting and singing, and beating anyone in a black shirt. Mussolini's regime of two decades seemed to have melted away in a matter of hours. For the next forty-five days, Italians experienced an intermezzo marked by extreme emotions, unstable values and relationships, and potent debates over their society's past, present, and future. Forty-Five Days explores the immediate aftermath of the Italian Fascist regime, from the fall of Mussolini on July 25th to the Armistice of September 8th. This fine-grained narrative tells the story of this fascinating, tumultuous moment as it unfolded through the voices of ordinary people: factory workers, peasants, soldiers, and schoolchildren; staunch Fascists and fervent anti-Fascists; Northerners and Southerners; Catholics and Jews. Crowds celebrated the restoration of freedom and anticipated a new era of peace and stability, but they also faced the challenge of how to reestablish its political, social, and moral foundations. Who had been a true Fascist and who remained uncompromised? How should communities cleanse themselves and rebuild after two decades of authoritarian rule? What should come next for the nation's leadership? Italians of all stripes confronted these fundamental questions. Drawing on diaries, letters, legal records, police reports, and oral histories, Joshua Arthurs reconstructs the collapse of the first modern state to declare itself totalitarian and the social wreckage left in its wake. Forty-Five Days offers a groundbreaking history of this pivotal moment, providing new perspectives on the social dynamics of political transition to the present day.

Writing was part of the fabric of the early modern European world, and remains an indispensable source for its historians. But what gave writings their power in the past, and how should this shape our engagement with them in the present? Going beyond the familiar themes and narratives of the printed public sphere or the rise of the information state, Writing Acts examines the direct impact of manuscript documents on the lives and struggles of the Ancien Regime. The study of writing acts, Giora Sternberg argues, illuminates fundamental aspects of early modern agency that cut across typical divides of historical inquiry, relating macro and micro, elites and commoners, centre and periphery. Writing Acts develops a framework for reconstituting early modern sources as the forms of action they once were. It considers documents in their fullness, as material objects as well as verbal texts, and follows their life-course from drafting on writers' desks, through filing in early modern knowledge-bases, to activation on council tables. Writing acts involved a far broader range of producers and protagonists than those familiar from more literary genres. They enabled parties across the social spectrum to subvert all forms of power dynamics: between rulers and subjects, superiors and inferiors, parents and children. Rethinking the relations among writing, action, and power, Writing Acts casts the Ancien Regime in a new light and offers a guide for anyone trying to make sense of its documents.

The Photographic Fix explores how photographs from World War I were used in personal photo albums and mass-market picture books to determine the meaning and legacy of the postwar Weimar Republic. Due to their publication success and wide reception, picture books should be considered no small part of this broad struggle of ideas to cement the war's legacy in the Weimar era. Drawing from a large archive of photographs created during the war by amateur soldier-photographers and professional reporters alike, Justin Court explores how visual depictions of the war were used to construct and distort memory in the highly contested realm of war commemoration in the Weimar. These books of photography reveal an effort to shape how the war was visually remembered in order to influence public opinion on myriad matters following in the war's wake, including notions of German guilt and responsibility, the legitimacy of the Republic, and the political future of the German nation. By utilizing relatively neglected sources, The Photographic Fix expands scholarship on German war photography to illuminate how images from the war and Weimar period reflected the public's understanding of the medium at the time.

A groundbreaking study of U.S. Army quartermasters during the wars of the nineteenth century. Historian John Wendt shows how the federal dollars exchanged between military personnel and civilians underwrote American expansion and had profound effects on the course of American military, economic, and social history.

The United States Army of the nineteenth century has been called many things-"conquerors," "constabularies," "peacekeepers," and "professionals," among others. Yet, despite spending hundreds of millions of dollars throughout the rapidly growing United States, rarely has the nineteenth-century Army ever been seen as a business. The Army's quartermasters were almost entirely reliant on local banks, merchants, and markets to supply campaigns across North America, including the Second Seminole War, the Mexican-American War, and the Civil War, From this novel vantage point, John Wendt stitches together seemingly disparate military and economic events into a coherent narrative of military spending across the mid-nineteenth century.

The Army's Quartermaster Department served as the Army's chief military logistics agency, responsible for procuring transportation, clothing, and food. One quartermaster in particular, George Hampton Crosman, served in the department for nearly four decades of military campaigns, territorial expansion, and institutional transformation. Wendt allows readers to see through Crosman's eyes how North American regions on the fringe of warfronts navigated the economic realities of financial crisis, western expansion, and industrialization. Significantly, he uncovers new insights into the numerous written and unwritten rules that governed the financial, logistical, and moral terms of civil-military relationships and sheds light on the individuals who quietly shaped the arc American history.

Katherine H. Burgett examines three metaphors in Galatians that cast the law as enslaved: the law is an enslaved παιδαγωγ?? (3:19-25), an enslaved ?π?τροπο? and ο?κον?μο? (4:1-11), and Hagar the enslaved παιδ?σκη (4:21-31). Galatians famously depicts humanity's enslavement under the law, whereas the author focuses here on Paul's depictions of the Law as an enslaved enslaver, situating these metaphors in the complex context of first-century Roman slavery and drawing out their implications for Paul's theology of the law in Galatians. She argues that Paul uses these metaphors to make a series of claims about the law's agency in relation to other agents. Before the coming of faith, the law worked effectively with God in a preparatory role. But when the Galatians try to come under the law's authority after receiving the spirit, they end up frustrating both their own intentions and those of the law.

From renowned Civil War historian Earl J. Hess comes a study of Union and Confederate soldiers as never seen before. Shattered Courage examines the experience of the men who refused to fight on the day of battle.

When Abraham Lincoln took the oath of presidential office on March 4, 1865, he urged the country to care for those "who shall have borne the battle"-a reference to the Union soldiers who successfully met the challenges of combat. But while honoring and helping the good soldier, Americans have forgotten those men who tried but failed to meet the test of battle in the Civil War. Shattered Courage tells the stories of those previously obscure soldiers and explores the other side of combat courage.

In this unique and groundbreaking volume, based on decades of research, Earl J. Hess provides the first comprehensive account of soldiers who refused to fight in the midst of combat. Hess charts the limits on combat morale, which affected veterans as well as green troops, officers in addition to enlisted men, and Union along with Confederate armies. Hess is the first historian to identify combat defaulters from personal accounts and official reports and to then examine their service records to discover what happened to them in the military system. He is also the first to compile statistics on defaulters and to reveal that their comrades sometimes reacted with anger, but more often accepted their failure as an unavoidable aspect of engaging in battle. Hess also discovered that the army tried unsuccessfully to stop combat defaulting but managed to contain its effects by efforts to encourage battle spirit. Far from heroes but not deserters, most of these men returned to duty and continued trying to deal with the experience of battle as lived during the Civil War.
