Analyzing how artists reimagine migrant disappearance and visibility at the US-Mexico border.

In the mid-1990s, the US government implemented Prevention through Deterrence, a major buildup of troops, walls, and surveillance around El Paso and San Diego. Cut off from these crucial urban crossings, migrants flowed into the dangerous surrounding deserts, where some ten thousand have since died. This is all according to plan: Pentagon documents describe the strategy of funneling migrants toward "mortal danger."

In this bracing critique, China Medel explores the aesthetics enabling and resisting the crisis of migrant death. The nation-state's performance of sovereignty along the border, predicated on mass casualties, is tolerated and even celebrated, thanks to the images in our heads of racialized and therefore criminal bodies, made invisible as they disintegrate in the baking sand. Spectral Aesthetics shows how state officials and mainstream media, relying on postracial ideologies and white-supremacist agendas, collectively foster this picture of a brown body so abject that it is disposable. In close readings of artworks contesting this murderous visual regime, Medel discovers an alternative kind of sight, one emphasizing the ghostly traces of the dead. These are images not of the individual "alien" but of life itself, indisposable.

A history of European immigrants in Texas and how they redefined racial identity.

While the creation of a Black-White racial binary was foundational to most of the United States, nineteenth-century Texas developed a unique tripartite system that acknowledged the role of individuals of Mexican ancestry in a region that was Spanish, Mexican, and an independent nation before becoming a US (and briefly Confederate) state. Yet this framework was fraught, struggling to accommodate new arrivals from beyond North America, in particular the Irish, Germans, and Czechs. Texan Crucible tells the story of these immigrants and how they became Anglo.

Marian Barber reveals the ways language, religion, alcohol use, and attitudes toward slavery distinguished these newcomers to Texas from those arriving from the eastern United States and how they nevertheless created thriving, influential communities. Their status was shaped by events inside and far beyond Texas, including an 1887 prohibition fight, the Civil War, and two world wars that encouraged them to erase their distinctiveness. As segregation was formally outlawed and civil rights activism grew, understandings of race shifted, cementing these groups' status as Anglo. Texan Crucible recovers the histories of German, Irish, and Czech immigrants and unveils the social construction of racial difference underpinning Texan identity.

As one of the first books to employ in-depth multimodal corpus analysis in the study of simultaneous interpreting, it advances corpus-based interpreting research and serves as a valuable reference for scholars in the field.

This book addresses contemporary translator training, discussing the various ways translators (and other language professionals) acquire and perfect their skills in rapidly evolving markets and a complex global context. The Photographic Fix explores how photographs from World War I were used in personal photo albums and mass-market picture books to determine the meaning and legacy of the postwar Weimar Republic. Due to their publication success and wide reception, picture books should be considered no small part of this broad struggle of ideas to cement the war's legacy in the Weimar era. Drawing from a large archive of photographs created during the war by amateur soldier-photographers and professional reporters alike, Justin Court explores how visual depictions of the war were used to construct and distort memory in the highly contested realm of war commemoration in the Weimar. These books of photography reveal an effort to shape how the war was visually remembered in order to influence public opinion on myriad matters following in the war's wake, including notions of German guilt and responsibility, the legitimacy of the Republic, and the political future of the German nation. By utilizing relatively neglected sources, The Photographic Fix expands scholarship on German war photography to illuminate how images from the war and Weimar period reflected the public's understanding of the medium at the time.

Historian John Wendt shows how the federal dollars exchanged between military personnel and civilians underwrote American expansion and had profound effects on the course of American military, economic, and social history.

The United States Army of the nineteenth century has been called many things-"conquerors," "constabularies," "peacekeepers," and "professionals," among others. Yet, despite spending hundreds of millions of dollars throughout the rapidly growing United States, rarely has the nineteenth-century Army ever been seen as a business. The Army's quartermasters were almost entirely reliant on local banks, merchants, and markets to supply campaigns across North America, including the Second Seminole War, the Mexican-American War, and the Civil War, From this novel vantage point, John Wendt stitches together seemingly disparate military and economic events into a coherent narrative of military spending across the mid-nineteenth century.

The Army's Quartermaster Department served as the Army's chief military logistics agency, responsible for procuring transportation, clothing, and food. One quartermaster in particular, George Hampton Crosman, served in the department for nearly four decades of military campaigns, territorial expansion, and institutional transformation. Wendt allows readers to see through Crosman's eyes how North American regions on the fringe of warfronts navigated the economic realities of financial crisis, western expansion, and industrialization. Significantly, he uncovers new insights into the numerous written and unwritten rules that governed the financial, logistical, and moral terms of civil-military relationships and sheds light on the individuals who quietly shaped the arc American history.

Volume II focuses on British foreign and strategic policy from the fall of France in 1940 to the end of the Cold War in Europe during the 1990s. The emphasis on the Cold War reflects Professor Dockrill's interests in the later part of his career. The chapters explore British imperial and post-colonial history, as well as the impact of race and religion on British foreign policy duringthe second half of the twentieth century. British relations with the United Nations are also examined through the formulation of the so-called 'Special Relationship'.

When Abraham Lincoln took the oath of presidential office on March 4, 1865, he urged the country to care for those "who shall have borne the battle"-a reference to the Union soldiers who successfully met the challenges of combat. But while honoring and helping the good soldier, Americans have forgotten those men who tried but failed to meet the test of battle in the Civil War. Shattered Courage tells the stories of those previously obscure soldiers and explores the other side of combat courage.

In this unique and groundbreaking volume, based on decades of research, Earl J. Hess provides the first comprehensive account of soldiers who refused to fight in the midst of combat. Hess charts the limits on combat morale, which affected veterans as well as green troops, officers in addition to enlisted men, and Union along with Confederate armies. Hess is the first historian to identify combat defaulters from personal accounts and official reports and to then examine their service records to discover what happened to them in the military system. He is also the first to compile statistics on defaulters and to reveal that their comrades sometimes reacted with anger, but more often accepted their failure as an unavoidable aspect of engaging in battle. Hess also discovered that the army tried unsuccessfully to stop combat defaulting but managed to contain its effects by efforts to encourage battle spirit. Far from heroes but not deserters, most of these men returned to duty and continued trying to deal with the experience of battle as lived during the Civil War.
