◆スエズ運河開通以前の英国の支配と独立に向けたナショナリズムの高揚

　オスマン帝国の形式的な主権下にあったエジプトは1876年以来英国の影響下におかれ、1914年第1次大戦勃発で英国の保護国とされます。戦後激しい反英独立運動を経て1922年独立、第2次大戦中エジプトは連合軍の主要な軍事基地となりました。1952年7月ナセル指導の自由将校団の革命で共和制となります。ナセル大統領は1956年スエズ運河会社国有化を宣言します。アラブ・ナショナリズムの高揚に脅威を覚えたイスラエルが侵攻し（第2次中東戦争）、続けて英仏軍が軍事介入しスエズ動乱が生じました。英仏軍の進駐は国際的な強い非難を浴び、これを機に英仏両国がこの地域に持っていた権益は根底から覆されました。英国の国力の低下に応じてアメリカが中近東に介入し、ことに石油資源をめぐるアメリカの進出は強大で、これと共にこの地域における米ソの対立も表面化します。本資料は今日の諸問題を考える上で非常に重要な素材を提供するものです。
