エミール・ラゲはベルギー出身でパリ外国宣教会所属していた宣教師で翻訳家。ザビエル来訪の地である九州地方を中心に布教活動を行っていましたが、本書『仏和會話大辞典』の出版活動のために当時の立教學院に近接していたカトリック築地教会に転居しました。本書はおそらくその地縁や築地の居留人コミュニティーのつながりを介して立教學院活版部にて印刷が行われたものと思われます。
