Ayalon, Yaron, Ottoman Jewry: Leadership, Charity, and Literacy. (Christians and Jews in Muslim Societies 12) 275 pp. 2024:12 (Brill, NE) <730-89>
ISBN 978-90-04-71196-9 hard ¥24,370.- (税込) EUR 105.00

This book is a history of Ottoman Jews that challenges prevailing assumptions about Jews' arrival in the empire, their relations with Muslims, and the role of religious and lay leaders. The book argues that rabbis played a less prominent role as communal and spiritual leaders than we have thought; and that the religious community was one of several frameworks within which Ottoman Jews operated. A focus on charitable and educational communal practices shows that with time Jews preferred to avoid the scrutiny of rabbis and the community, leading to private initiatives that undermined rabbinical and lay authority.

パックス・アメリカーナ-イラクに対する終わらない戦争
Ismael, Jacqueline S. / Ismael, Tareq Y. / MacDonald, L. T., Pax Americana: Unending War on Iraq. (Frontiers of Globalization) 232 pp. 2024:7 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <730-574>
ISBN 978-3-031-61272-5 hard ¥30,169.- (税込) EUR 129.99

This book surveys the testimony of international organizations of the impact of American foreign policy on Iraq. Each reveals a fragment of Iraq's mosaic of misery and desolation, but lacks the context to permit our understanding why this has happened. A parallel lack of context characterizes most of the political commentary, overlooking the recurring pattern of victimization of Iraqis, regardless of which political party controls the White House. This book takes a broader perspective, to reveal the enduring pattern linking specific events.

レバノン内戦の文化的記憶-再考
Dakhli, Leyla / Wieland, Klaus (eds.), The Cultural Memory of the Lebanese Civil War - Revisited. (Mobilizing Memories 4) 242 pp. 2024:11 (Brill, NE) <730-618>
ISBN 978-90-04-51977-0 hard ¥27,852.- (税込) EUR 120.00

This volume, edited by Leyla Dakhli and Klaus Wieland, is an overview of the cultural memory of the Lebanese Civil War, as it has emerged and evolved over the last 30 years. These narratives represent a counter-memory to the non-existent national memory, undesired by Lebanon's political class. In 1991, the Amnesty Law G84/91 was enacted, granting state power impunity for all war crimes, including crimes against humanity. The general amnesty entailed partial amnesia; the war was to be "officially" forgotten. And yet, since the 1990s, nongovernmental organizations, archives, activists, publicists, visual artists, filmmakers, and writers have produced an impressive alternative culture of remembrance of the Lebanese Civil War, which is revisited and analyzed in this book. Contributors represent a multi-disciplinary mix, with perspectives from area studies, history, social science, literary studies, trauma and memory, and peace and conflict studies.

Constantinople Through the Ages aims to map the long and rich history of Constantinople, from its foundations to the present. Starting point is the 'visible city'; the ways in which continuity and change in history are still observable in present-day Istanbul. The contributors, each of them foremost experts in their fields, address the interaction between the different layers of time from various sources and perspectives. They explore how later inhabitants received and appropriated the legacy of their predecessors, and how the city's tangible and intangible heritage has been perceived and (ab)used in both the past and the present.

Cihan, Oezlem, Spatial Encounters and Togetherness in the Metropolis: The Metrobuses of Istanbul. (Identities and Modernities in Europe) 292 pp. 2024:7 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <730-700>
ISBN 978-3-031-60089-0 hard ¥30,169.- (税込) EUR 129.99

This book analyzes Istanbul's bus rapid transit, the metrobus, as an encountering space to unfold the perception and practice of togetherness. Based on field research with regular metrobus passengers, the book presents a layered analysis between everyday life, everyday mobility, and togetherness to emphasize the metropolitan impact on the socio-spatial experience and subjectification. By articulating Lefebvrian social space in a metropolitan context, the book discusses that Istanbul's spatially and temporally framed everydayness leads inhabitants to the need for bus rapid transit. On the other hand, the need for the metrobus produces transit modes of experience in regulars' socio-spatial relation and subjectification. As a result, encountering and being with the unfamiliar and diverse others undertake the framed typologies of the first two layers and produce a dissolving essence in the idea and practice of togetherness in Istanbul.

Daga, Giulia, Constructing Oman's Peaceful Identity: Alignment Strategies and Discursive Identifications under Sultan Qaboos bin Said. (Middle East Today) 233 pp. 2024:9 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <730-701>
ISBN 978-3-031-62465-0 hard ¥30,169.- (税込) EUR 129.99

This book offers a comprehensive and insightful exploration of Oman's discourses on foreign policy and national identity in the context of the Middle East. The Sultanate of Oman is often hailed as a peaceful exception in the region, but this work goes beyond surface-level observations to reveal the intricate complexities of Oman's foreign policy and identity construction. With a keen focus on deconstructing essentialist understandings, the chapters delve into how discursive alignments and identity contents have shaped the government's quest for legitimacy, recognition, and status. Employing a pioneering discourse historical approach to compare the National Day speeches and UN General Assembly speeches throughout Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Bu Saidi's reign (1970-2020), the author reveals how discourse evolved based on time, issues, and audiences. Notably, the book situates Oman within the context of the Gulf Cooperation Council states, examining how the Omani government's interlinked discourses on identity and foreign policy contributed to differentiate the Sultanate from other Gulf countries. With chapters exploring Oman's foreign policy principles, its material and ideological response to the ideas linked to the Dhofar Revolution, and its interactions with the Arab world and the international community, readers of this book will gain a comprehensive understanding of Oman's evolving national and supranational identifications and the dynamic nature of its foreign policy. Challenging prevailing narratives while providing a fresh perspective on the relations between Oman's foreign policy and identity construction, this book marks an important text for scholars as well as policymakers and anyone interested in understanding the intricate dynamics of Oman's role in the global stage.

While the role of youth in the Arab Spring is acknowledged, their living conditions remain critical. Johannes Frische offers a fresh perspective on Tunisia's post-revolutionary transition by examining employment and income strategies in disadvantaged urban areas. He reveals a grim reality: young people face structural unemployment, informality, and precariousness. Focusing on the low-income suburb of Ettadhamen in Greater Tunis, he highlights the impact of sociospatial segregation, economic stagnation, and social marginalization. This close-up on youth's everyday life challenges the notion of youth as a simple transitional phase, instead exposing their ongoing struggle with precarity and exclusion.

Through the eyes of citizens and legal professionals, it reveals how women and men experienced their rights under Ben Ali's repressive regime, tracing connections between gender, ethics and the law. This accessibly written book provides a vital backdrop for understanding contemporary debates in Tunisia where women's rights remain a hotly contested topic.

Karimi, Pamela, Women, Art, Freedom: Artists and Street Politics in Iran. 304 pp. 2024:9 (Leuven U. Pr., BE) <730-710>
ISBN 978-94-6270-418-3 paper ¥13,662.- (税込) EUR 45.00

Artists' vital role in shaping nonviolent resistance in IranWomen, Art, Freedom offers an insightful look at the 2022 Woman, Life, Freedom uprising in Iran, sparked by the tragic murder of Jina Mahsa Amini at the hands of the "morality police" for violating hijab rules. Beyond its feminist undertones and the remarkable courage of the young protesters, what sets this uprising apart from previous ones is the abundant and diverse art it has inspired. This book, rather than merely analyzing the artworks that garnered attention on social media platforms, brings to light lesser-known grassroots artistic movements that played a crucial role within their immediate local communities. Engaging with primarily Iran-based artists, it uncovers their role in shaping guerrilla interventions and street occupations and in articulating distinct forms of peaceful civil disobedience. By drawing on a broad spectrum of historical and theoretical sources, this book further reveals the origins and inspirations of Iran's protest art. Focusing mainly on the interconnections between the public sphere, women's bodies, and feminist viewpoints, Women, Art, Freedom underscores the vital role of artists in championing global justice and equality. This book will be made open access within three years of publication thanks to Path to Open, a program developed in partnership between JSTOR, the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS), University of Michigan Press, and The University of North Carolina Press to bring about equitable access and impact for the entire scholarly community, including authors, researchers, libraries, and university presses around the world. For medieval Islamic civilization, musk became the most important of all aromatics. The musk trade thus illuminates the nature of medieval Asian trade and musk's cultural effects on the Islamic world. Scent from the Garden of Paradise: Musk and the Medieval Islamic World examines the history of musk from its origins in Asia to its uses in the medieval Middle East, surveys the Islamic literature on musk, and discusses the roles of musk in perfumery and medicine, as well as the symbolic importance of musk in Islam.

ISBN 978-3-8353-5686-3 hard ¥15,086.- (税込) EUR 65.00

Quilliam, Neil, Syria: Realism in Action. (Flashpoints) 176 pp. 2024:11 (Agenda Pub., UK) <730-714>

The Syrian regime and, in particular, the Asad clan has managed to survive the Arab uprisings, recover lost territory, and retain its authority over state institutions and diplomatic missions outside of the country. Syria's foreign policy, as developed under former president Hafez al-Asad, has effectively enabled the current regime's survival. Neil Quilliam examines how Syria, a country that operates at the margins of the international political system, has been able to project its power beyond its size and capability by leveraging relations with key states that typically oppose US policy in the region. He explains how Syria's relations with its major partners, including Russia and China and regional actors like Iran, are key to sustaining the regime and securing its survival. But this has come at a price. In a compelling analysis Quilliam shows that by effectively mortgaging the state to Russia and Iran, Bashar al-Asad has severely limited his margin for manoeuvre in the future. The book offers an insightful and balanced analysis of both the continuity and change within the Syrian state and the threat it poses in its regional context and the persistent challenge it presents to the international community.

This book examines the impact of chokepoints in Middle East geopolitics. In the last few years, as the number of conflicts and political tensions in the Arab world and countries surrounding the Gulf has increased, chokepoints as a tactic to hinder the 'enemy' have become more prominent. To evade the chance of getting 'choked', regional actors with the support of extra-regional countries are investing in new port infrastructures such as at Duqm, Gwadar and Chabahar. This book investigates the geopolitical significance of old, new and under-construction seaports in the Middle East region. The book intends to answer the following questions:

On August 3, 2014, the Sinjar region of Northern Iraq was attacked by the "Islamic State". Killing and abducting thousands, the jihadists also destroyed many of the religious minority's shrines. Others, however, were defended by local fighters and groups affiliated with the PKK. In the aftermath of the genocide, stories of divine intervention into the defence bolstered land claims of serveral Kurdish political groups. Through extensive fieldwork in the region, I trace imaginaries of Sinjar as a landscape of resistance and a communal history of continuous persecution to current political disputes and attempts to construct a unified Yezidi identity.

Ridge, Hannah M., Contours of Israeli Politics: Jewish Ethnicity, Religious Nationalism, and Democracy. 210 pp. 2024:11 (Temple U. Pr., US) <730-717>

There is no single Jewish ethnicity, and no single Jewish ethnic group constitutes a clear majority of Jewish Israelis. These intra-Jewish differences permit a social hierarchy within the "in-group" - Jewish Israelis - that privileges the Ashkenazi Jews of European descent over Mizrahi/Sephardi Jews of Middle Eastern backgrounds. The timely Contours of Israeli Politics focuses on the socio-political ramifications of this hierarchy within the upper stratum of Israeli society. Using public opinion studies and qualitative data, Hannah Ridge examines the effects of this social hierarchy to address attitudes on Israeli ethnicity and religious majoritarianism, support for Israeli democracy, and preference for an expanded territorial state and peace with its neighbors. As various Jewish ethnic groups face greater pressure to assert their in-group membership (their Jewishness), they are more likely to protect the status privileges of that group. This can strengthen their ideas about identity, nationalism, democratic values, and conflict attitudes. Ridge's findings reveal the ways in which Jewish ethnicity continues to influence the politics of Israel, a Jewish ethno-religious state.

Sahin, Elena, The Grand Critic of Ibn Khaldun: Ibn al-Azraq and His Ideal Sultanate. (Islamicate Intellectual History 13) 180 pp. 2024:10 (Brill, NE) <730-719>
ISBN 978-90-04-52503-0 hard ¥27,619.- (税込) EUR 119.00

Ibn al-Azraq (d. 896/1491) was a renowned Andalusian jurist (faqih) and statesman who lived during the final period of the Nasrid emirate of Granada. His most famous work, Bada?i? al-Silk fi ?aba?i? al-Mulk (Unprecedented Lines about the Nature of Political Rule), is a political treatise that builds upon Ibn Khaldun's (d. 808/1406) social theory (?ilm al-?umran). In The grand critic of Ibn Khaldun Elena Sahin critically analyses the major aspects of Ibn al-Azraq's political thought. In this contribution on the field of the history of Islamic political thought, Elena Sahin demonstrates that while Ibn al-Azraq integrates the thrust of Ibn Khaldun's approach, Ibn al-Azraq's work should be regarded as part of a larger conversation amongst various scholars, engaging, for example with the Andalusian jurist al-Sha?ibi's (d. 790/1388) theory of Maqa?id al-Shari?a. Widening the analysis of Ibn al-Azraq's work illuminates that Ibn al-Azraq's political theory was in opposition to that of Ibn Khaldun, and thus gives us a better understanding of the dynamic debates within Andalusian political thought.

ISBN 978-981-12-8546-2 hard ¥25,311.- (税込) US$ 118.00 *

Soft power encompasses the ability to wield influence over others through skillful consensus-building, employing persuasive techniques, and cultivating a favorable image. In today's technologically advanced era, nations are adopting innovative diplomatic approaches; instead of solely relying on conventional state-to-state interactions, countries now prioritize engaging with societies through a variety of channels. Thus, in the evolving global landscape, where effective communication holds ever greater significance, public diplomacy takes center stage.Drawing from its robust historical legacy of strong statecraft, Tuerkiye strategically employs soft power to navigate diplomatic challenges, establish global connections, promote mutual understanding, dispel stereotypes, and encourage cross-cultural interactions. Through harnessing its cultural appeal and influence, Tuerkiye adeptly bridges gaps and facilitates meaningful exchanges among diverse communities. Within this framework, this book delves into the theoretical dimensions of soft power and its intersections with other principles and actions. Additionally, it conducts a historical analysis of Tuerkiye's soft power strategies, spanning from the time of the Ottoman Empire to the founding of the Republic and extending into contemporary times.

Izelmaden, Mouna, Understanding Women's Career Experiences in Moroccan Businesses: A Multi-Level Analysis of Gender Relations. 217 pp. 2024:6 (Springer VS, GW) <730-382>
ISBN 978-3-658-44869-1 paper ¥23,206.- (税込) EUR 99.99

Existing literature on women career development focuses on western industrialized countries and gives little attention to regions where patriarchy is prevailing like in North African countries. The limited available research in the region takes a business-oriented perspective to investigate the topic and focuses on business process optimization for an increased profitability. In an attempt to close this gap, the present book takes a sociological lens to investigate meanings and interpretations that skilled women in Moroccan organizations give to their experiences. This project sought to understand how Moroccan professional women take decisions about their career path while taking a multi-level approach to examine contextual factors. In this book, Bourdieu's theory of practice was used as a theoretical framework to examine the interplay of the different factors impacting the development of women career paths. Using a qualitative research approach under the interpretivist paradigm, and drawing on in-depth interviews with 10 participants, this research investigated female and male conceptualization of career and work objectives.

Darmame, Khadija / Ross, Eric (eds.), Local Governance and Development in Africa and the Middle East. (Local and Urban Governance) 257 pp. 2024:7 (Springer, GW) <730-562>
ISBN 978-3-031-60656-4 hard ¥30,169.- (税込) EUR 129.99

This edited volume surveys how current local governance policies and development strategies across Africa and the Middle east are advancing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Morocco's recent experience with local development strategies serves as starting point for the discussion. Over the past decade, Morocco has undertaken a variety of initiatives aimed at reducing poverty and social inequalities and providing essential services to marginalized communities. These initiatives provide great opportunities to reshape the spatial organization of regions, and to address chronic local issues of infrastructure and investment. Local governance is the most direct way of providing basic services to populations, helping to alleviate socio-spatial inequalities. Also, it is and will continue to be the best way to engage people and local governments in economic, social and human development agendas. However, placing local governance at the heart of development strategies requires going well beyond participatory approaches to policy making. Local communities and their governments need to be empowered. As responses to the Covid19 epidemic have laid bare, new and more efficient modes of territorial governance are needed at local and regional levels if current global-scale challenges are to be met. While development and governance strategies like Morocco's are framed by global agreements and standards, there is a need to understand them at the regional scale. Are there discernible patterns in how African and Middle Eastern countries design and implement them? This volume assembles case studies from across the region, allowing for understandings that transcend the usual spatial dichotomies between "North" and "Sub-Saharan" Africa, between Africa and the Middle East, and between the "Anglophone" and "Francophone" spheres. The volume builds upon an international conference on the topic held at Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane, Morocco Morocco in February of 2022. The volume is aimed at a readership of researchers and development practitioners, and will be of most direct benefit to advanced undergraduate and graduate-level students.

This book examines the British colonial and American post-colonial oil policies toward the Persian Gulf from a postcolonial critical perspective, taking into account the coloniality and postcoloniality of power structures. It examines colonization, decolonization, and postcolonization of oil in the Persian Gulf through the parameters of political order, formulated policies, market structure, concession system, imperial/national interests, and great powers rivalry. In this work, the author uses qualitative, theory testing, and comparative case study method. There are several reasons that are encouraging for the selection of these two cases: first, British colonial and American post-colonial oil policies toward the Gulf region show similar patterns of domination and exploitation; second, both colonial and post-colonial great powers consider the control of the Gulf oil among their national security priorities; third, both use military interventions, install military bases and involve in coup d'etat in the region to maintain their established oil order; and fourth, both justifies their colonial/imperial oil order in the region with humanitarian objectives such as 'civilizing mission' or 'democratization.' In this research, the state-level of analysis is used to explore the oil policies of Anglo-American governments. The governance history of oil in the Persian Gulf can be broadly divided into three phases: (1) the colonial period 1901-1950; (2) the decolonization period 1950-1972; and (3) the post-colonial period, since the mid-1970s to the present. Chronologically, the oil policies of Anglo-American governments are examined in loose temporal and spatial contexts, and each period is introduced in independent chapters, but they are complementary to each other.

This book examines the political economy of natural resource extraction in the Global South across production and social reproduction. Building on a fieldwork which stretched over six years, the book argues that natural resource extraction in the agrarian South is a multi-dimensional development strategy, whose holistic analysis necessitates attention to (i) the significance of the natural resource in question for macro development plans and global value chains, (ii) the formation of the classes of extractive labour across production and social reproduction, (iii) gender division of labour within rural extractive households and rural labour markets, and (iv) labour process and control strategies in the spheres of production and social reproduction.

Kuegelgen, Anke (ed.), Philosophy in the Islamic World. Volume 4/1: 19th-20th Centuries: The Arabic-Speaking Region. (Handbook of Oriental Studies, Section 1: The Near and Middle East / Philosophy in the Islamic World) 700 pp. 2024:10 (Brill, NE) <730-30>
ISBN 978-90-04-52035-6 hard ¥58,025.- (税込) EUR 250.00

Philosophy in the Islamic World is a comprehensive and unprecedented four-volume reference work devoted to the history of philosophy in the realms of Islam, from its beginnings in the eighth century AD down to modern times. The focus of this fourth installment of the series, divided into two volumes, is the 19th and 20th centuries and geographically on the Arab countries, the Ottoman-Turkish region, Iran, and Muslim South Asia. During this time philosophy was pursued at Islamic institutions and increasingly in Western-style universities, but philosophy also had an impact beyond academia. In each chapter, an international expert on philosophy in this period explores the teachings of individual philosophers, philosophical movements (philosophy of religion, logical empiricism, deconstructionism, etc.), and schools (for instance the continuation of Mulla ?adra's philosophy of being). Debates over cultural authenticity, political rule, gender, and other major issues are also presented. This is the English version of the relevant volume of the Ueberweg, the most authoritative German reference work on the history of philosophy, which updates the German version (Philosophie in der Islamischen Welt Band 4/1: 19. und 20. Jahrhundert. Arabischer Sprachraum, Basel: Schwabe, 2021) by providing references to the latest scholarly literature. Contributors Katajun Amirpur, Sadik Jalal al-Azm, Serpil Cakir, Frank Darwiche, Bettina Dennerlein, Sarhan Dhouib, Zeynep Direk, Michael Frey, Urs Goesken, Ursula Guenther, Reza Hajatpour, Jan-Peter Hartung, Christoph Herzog, Elisabeth Susanne Kassab, Mohamed Aziz Lahbabi, Kata Moser, Sait OEzervarli, Nils Riecken, Sajjad Rizvi, Ruggero Vimercati Sanseverino, Roman Seidel and Harald Viersen.
