平和、脱植民地化、連帯の実践
Skinner, Rob,
Peace, Decolonization, and the Practice of Solidarity. 248 pp. 2023:11 (Bloomsbury Academic, UK) <706-872>
ISBN 978-1-350-15976-1 hard ¥24,216.- (税込) GB£ 85.00 *
This book shows that the connected histories of decolonization and globalization concern the practices of individuals and movements as much as they do the ideologies of states, institutions and organizations. Viewing decolonization through non-state activist practices, and setting anti-colonial solidarity in the context of the methods of contemporary global peace movements, it argues that seemingly marginal histories can illuminate aspects of the end of empire that are not readily apparent in studies centred on state diplomacy and nationalist movements. Focusing on a group of British and American activists, including the pacifist campaigner A.J. Muste, the anti-apartheid priest Michael Scott and the civil rights organiser Bayard Rustin, Skinner explores connected global histories of anti-nuclear peace campaigns, anti-colonialism and decolonization to illuminate new perspectives on the end of empire and the Cold War. Studying a failed attempt to infiltrate the French atom bomb test site in southern Algeria, and a mass march across the border between Tanganyika and Northern Rhodesia that never took place, these stories provide valuable insights into the interactions between local and global scales of historical experience. In presenting these histories, this book demonstrates how global and transnational histories can challenge and disrupt, rather than reinforce hierarchies of power and privileges. In doing so, it also contributes to ongoing debates surrounding the nature of decolonization as a historical phenomenon by focusing on the practices of activism that shaped - and were shaped by - the political and intellectual structures of decolonization.

Decolonisation: Revolution and Evolution. 272 pp. 2023:10 (Wits U. Pr., SA) <706-878>
ISBN 978-1-77614-844-8 paper ¥6,468.- (税込) US$ 30.00 *
Debates about decolonisation of the mind and of our curricula reveal the dark shadow cast over the world by the adventurers of the modern era, beginning in 1492. Decolonisation explores questions of justice, injustice and inhumanity that have geographically and intellectually shaped the course of history through overlapping colonial, decolonial and postcolonial eras. This multidisciplinary collection uses the lenses of history, philosophy, literature and education to examine aspects of colonialism and decolonisation, and their revolutionary and evolutionary manifestations which, contributors argue, occurred simultaneously in the historical and epistemological record. The problems that come into focus have a kaleidoscopic effect on how we come to understand fraught issues, from the 'invention' of blacks, to the formulation of the ideology of trusteeship and the obligations to 'lower civilisations'. Decolonisation brings together an internationally renowned group of scholars to showcase their search for decolonial strategies within their disciplinary focus, covering ideas such as the different layers at which colonialism operates, strategies for a decolonisation that does not recolonise, and the importance of preserving and publishing in indigenous languages. This is a much-needed reference book for students and scholars in the field of decolonisation, history, philosophy and pedagogy. The introductory chapter offers a clear and concise primer to this complex subject, covering colonialism, imperialism, decoloniality, and the various actors involved.

J.コーツ他編 戦争の記憶と東アジアの紛争 1930~45年
Buchheim, Eveline / Coates, Jennifer (eds.),
War Memory and East Asian Conflicts, 1930-1945. (Entangled Memories in the Global South) 269 pp. 2023:6 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <706-880>
ISBN 978-3-031-23917-5 hard ¥32,952.- (税込) EUR 139.99 *
This book explores how narratives, exhibitions, media representations, and cultural heritage sites that communicate memories of conflicts in East Asia between 1930 and 1945 spread, interact, and are re-packaged for post-war audiences across national divisions. The contributors examine individual case studies of grassroots engagement with war memory, and collectively demonstrate the necessity of remaining aware of the researcher as participating in another kind of engagement with war memory. Contributions showcase a number of ways of doing research on war memory, alongside case studies from diverse regions of the world. Taken together, they bring a fresh perspective to scholarship on war memory, which has tended to focus on space, text, exhibition, or personal narrative, rather than bringing these elements into dialogue with one another.

Harrison, Philip,
Governing Complex City-Regions in the Twenty-First Century: Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. 296 pp. 2023:11 (Wits U. Pr., SA) <706-882>
ISBN 978-1-77614-852-3 paper ¥7,546.- (税込) US$ 35.00 *
The scale, complexity and pace of urban change in the recent past has been disorienting. As individual cities evolve into complex urban agglomerations, sometimes called city-regions, urban scholars battle to find adequate vocabularies for contemporary urban processes while practitioners continually search for meaningful governance responses. Governing Complex City-Regions in the Twenty-First Century explores the ongoing evolution of regional and metropolitan governance as diverse urban agents grapple with the dilemmas of collective action across multi-layered and fragmented institutions, in contexts where there are manifold centres of influence and decision-making. The author draws on the experiences of the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa), situating his analysis against the particular historical and political cycles of each. This expands the geography of knowledge in the study of city-region governance, revealing meanings, processes and outcomes of city-region governance that are not apparent in the more settled urban contexts of Western Europe and North America on which much of the existing literature is founded. Intended for students, academics, and professionals, the book provides a critique of the 'best practice' approach, showing that governance approaches are rarely designed but emerge, rather, from the disparate intentions, actions and practices of multiple collaborating and competing actors working within diverse contexts of political settlement and political culture. While it does not offer packaged solutions or easy answers to the challenges of urban governance, it does show the value of comparative study in inspiring new thought and perspectives, which could lead to improved governance practice within South African contexts.

Portuguese-speaking Small Island Developing States: The Development Journeys of Cabo Verde, Sao Tome and Principe, and Timor-Leste. 511 pp. 2023:8 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <706-250>
ISBN 978-981-9933-81-5 hard ¥32,952.- (税込) EUR 139.99
This book assesses the dynamics, challenges and achievements of the development processes of three Portuguese-speaking Small Island Developing States (PSSIDS) - Cabo Verde, Sao Tome and Principe, and Timor-Leste. Important lessons are drawn from those processes, which are relevant for policymakers, as well as for their bilateral and multilateral development partners, including international organizations such as United Nations or the Community of Portuguese Language Countries. To that end, the book includes contributions to the academic literature about SIDS, an area of research that has been significantly overlooked. The conclusions would be of interest to readers as a lead up to the fiftieth anniversary of their independence.

East Asia in the 21st Century: Searching for Chances of Symbiosis. (Vietnam - Politics and Economics 3) 270 S. 2023:4 (Nomos, GW) <706-256>
ISBN 978-3-7560-0462-1 paper ¥15,065.- (税込) EUR 64.00 *
The countries of South, Southeast and East Asia are looking for new forms of cooperation with each other: politically, culturally, economically and in terms of energy policy. They have undergone enormous change, especially in the last 30 years, and are now in the process of replacing North America and Western Europe as global leadership regions. Along the way, they are repositioning themselves and have so far refused to be included in a renewed division of the world into power blocs. In contrast, they are striving to place cooperation on a new, multilateral basis. This volume illustrates this development by focusing on Vietnam, but while also examining other countries in the fascinating region from India to Indonesia and Japan.

中国、台湾、英国、CPTPP

China, Taiwan, the UK and the CPTPP: Global Partnership or Regional Stand-off? (Taiwan and World Affairs) 222 pp. 2023:6 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <706-257>
ISBN 978-981-9931-96-5 hard ¥30,598.- (税込) EUR 129.99
Originally called the Trans-Pacific Partnership until the USA withdrew in 2017, the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) is an ambitious and wide-ranging free trade agreement between eleven Pacific countries. Far from faltering after US withdrawal, several more countries have since applied to join, including China, Taiwan and the United Kingdom. Some observers see in this a contest between China and the USA for wider influence through an attempt to control or re-write the rules of international trade; at a minimum accession by any of the three would have a major impact on the CPTPP as originally envisaged. This edited volume considers the three applications, the motivations for the three to join, and the likely responses of existing members. The implications for cross-Strait tension between China and Taiwan are fully considered, as is the ability or willingness of the USA to influence the outcome of the applications.

Akita, Shigeru (ed.),
Oil Crises of the 1970s and the Transformation of International Order: Economy, Development and Aid in Asia and Africa. 288 pp. 2023:11 (Bloomsbury Academic, UK) <706-409>
ISBN 978-1-350-41380-1 hard ¥24,216.- (税込) GB£ 85.00 *
The 1970s are widely seen as a turning point for the world economy and a transformative decade for the international order. This volume explores the role played by the oil crises in this transformation, focusing particularly on their impact in previously little-studied regions such as Asia and Africa. Examining the intersection between the oil crises and the Third World project, their impact on Asian economic development and the contrasting responses of two African countries, this collection covers new ground on the global and regional effects of the crises, and ties them into the key transformations of the international economy and the Cold War order. Arguing that they were instrumental in reshaping the Asian economies, helping to instigate the boom known as the 'East Asian Miracle', it also demonstrates how the individual responses of countries reflected their own specific circumstances. With chapters from leading scholars such as David Painter and Dane Kennedy, this book shows how the origins, course and consequences of the oil crises of the 1970s are crucial to understanding the transformation of the international order in the late twentieth century.

Asian Pacific Catholicism and Globalization: Historical Perspectives and Contemporary Challenges. 304 pp. 2023:12 (Georgetown U. Pr., US) <706-143>
ISBN 978-1-64712-378-9 hard ¥32,329.- (税込) US$ 149.95 *
ISBN 978-1-64712-379-6 paper ¥10,769.- (税込) US$ 49.95 *
This history of the Catholic Church in Asia and the Pacific illuminates the processes of globalization Since the sixteenth century, Catholicism has contributed significantly to global connectivity. Except for the Philippines and Timor-Leste, Catholicism in Asia is, and is likely to remain, a minority religion. For this reason, it can serve as a unique prism through which to look at the processes of globalization in Asia. Asian Pacific Catholicism and Globalization demonstrates to scholars and students of Catholic history that the development of Catholicism in Asia and later in the Oceania-Pacific region is closely associated with three different phases of globalization. This book approaches the historical processes of globalization not as structural agencies or causal forces, but rather as the historical contexts that condition possibilities for human action and reaction in the world. The editors identify three distinct phases in the development of Catholicism in Asia and Oceania: early modern (sixteenth-eighteenth centuries), modern Western hegemony (1780s-1960s), and the contemporary (1960s-present). The book's contributors discuss the development of Catholicism in all the major countries of the region, including China, Japan, South Korea, the Philippines, Vietnam, India, and Australia.

Millie, Julian (ed.),
The 'Crossed-Out God' in the Asia-Pacific: Religious Efficacy of Public Spheres. 208 pp. 2023:9 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <706-177>
ISBN 978-981-9933-53-2 hard ¥28,244.- (税込) EUR 119.99
This book explores the evaluations made by religious groups and individuals about the potential of public spheres for religious practice, focussing upon public religion in societies of the Asia-Pacific. Across this region we observe a resurgence of religious traditions, increasing mediatisation of religion, and an inward turn toward conservative political programs. Against this background, relations between religion and public domains are critical influences upon civic inclusion and equal citizenship. In contrast to conventional approaches to religion and public life that focus upon the public potential of religion, chapter authors focus upon the religious potential of public domains, taking the perspectives of religious actors as their points of departure. The book's chapters capture the dynamic nexus between religion and politics in Asia-Pacific public spheres: why would Indonesia's minority Shiite movement strive to develop a public profile in a national environment whereit attracts widespread disapproval? What constructions of religion and public space make Banaras so unconducive to female mobility? Why does the success of the social services wing of Australia's Salvation Army create anxiety for its religious wing? What is at stake for followers of Australian Spiritualism when they attend spirit-medium sessions? How are popular Islamic preachers vulnerable to action from Indonesia's civil society organisations? What do media representations of Hajj pilgrimage by Indonesia's presidents have in common with middle-class representations of gender? Why did Indonesia's traditionalist Muslim intellectuals draw heavily upon the ideas of Juergen Habermas in their theorisations of state-society relations? An epilogue by the Indonesian neo-traditionalist intellectual Ahmad Baso, the most prominent theorist of state-religion relations in that country, overviews the issues against the background of that country's religious and political histories.

Jesuits and Asian Goods in the Iberian Empires, 1580-1700. (Palgrave Studies in Comparative Global History) 198 pp. 2023:6 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <706-195>
ISBN 978-981-9924-63-9 hard ¥30,598.- (税込) EUR 129.99 *
This book analyzes the exchange relations between the colonies of the Iberian Empires, starting from two cities ports, Buenos Aires and Macau in the period 1580-1700. Agents, who were not professional traders such as the members of the Society of Jesus, and the circulation and consumption of Asian goods in the local populations of Buenos Aires and Macau, were analyzed. Both cases of study will show us how these non-state agents- the Jesuits- build their own networks and exchange channels to Chinese goods distribution (i.e silk, porcelain, musk, amber and others) between Asia and Latin American. This book intends to break with the local scheme of Jesuit studies in order to combine the local scale with analysis of inter-regional processes on a continental scale, from a comparative perspective.
