Forty-six expert international contributors discuss the conceptual approaches and applications of SEA in 31 countries, examining numerous sectors, including land-use, transport, energy and water. They also explore how SEA is applied at trans-national, national, regional and local levels, and at a range of decision tiers, including in strategy and policy, as well as in plans and programmes. There is a focus on paradigm shift in the sustainable development for the green environment during the period of isolation of COVID-19. Fighting climate change requires a collaborative approach between all spheres of society unlike the former. While industrial and chemical innovations have contributed extensively to human advancement, the darker part of their legacy has been the hundreds of thousands of polluted sites left behind. Governments at all levels have rallied to support the remediation and reuse of these land resources and put many of the nation's brownfields back into productive use. This book presents two dozen brownfield projects in the United States that have incorporated sustainability, highlighting project features, best management practices, and lessons from the field regarding the underlying policies and practices that enabled these projects to be completed or, in some cases, stalled, altered or abandoned.

The case studies represent an array of brownfield projects that aimed to go beyond conventional practice and include a range and variety of end uses (e.g., corner gas stations, industrial, office, residential, brightfields, green space, mixed-use, and transit-oriented developments). Empowering Teachers through Environmental and Sustainability Education draws inspiration from an empirical study exploring early career teachers' attempts at enacting Environmental and Sustainability Education (ESE) in their everyday teaching practices. It showcases how a confluence of personal, professional and environmental identities supports implementation of ESE. Additionally, this book discusses key concepts and issues surrounding ESE and the ways in which teachers may claim agency and power to create change in their classroom practices. Drawing from theoretical perspectives, such as Bourdieu's 'thinking tools' habitus and capital, theories of identity, and Foucault's concept of power and knowledge relations, this book explores how teachers negotiate policies, curriculum and institutional norms to further theoretical and practical understanding of ESE. The use of personal narratives offers new insights into teachers' agency in creating localised yet powerful change through small and meaningful actions. The purpose of this book, therefore, is to explore ways in which meaningful change can be made in educational settings through these small agentive and yet empowering steps.

Inaction by governments in the face of climate change is often attributed to a lack of political will or a denial of the seriousness of the situation, but as Mark Alizart argues in this provocative book, we shouldn't exclude the possibility that part of the reluctance might be motivated by cynicism and even sheer evil: for some people, there are real financial and political benefits to be gained from the chaos that will ensue from environmental disaster. In the face of this veritable 'carbofascist' coup targeting humanity, modifying our behaviour as individuals won't suffice. The Indian Ocean region features many places particularly vulnerable to the effects of environmental degradation and climate change, which will have profound social, economic, and cultural impacts. The increasing preoccupation with the state of the environment is also having significant political effects, including on the concept and content of citizenship. The language of citizenship has permeated environmental discourse and, conversely, environmental issues are often articulated in the language of citizenship.

This book explores environmental citizenship and civil society responses to environmental challenges in the Indian Ocean region. The Government of Natural Resources explores government scientific activity in Quebec from Confederation until the Second World War. Scientific and technical personnel are an often quiet presence within the state, but they play an integral role. By tracing the history of geology, forestry, fishery, and agronomy services, Stephane Castonguay reveals how the exploitation of natural resources became a tool of government. As it shaped territorial and environmental transformations, scientific activity contributed to state formation and expanded administrative capacity. This thoughtful reconceptualization of resource development reaches well beyond provincial borders, changing the way we think of science and state power.

Friend Beloved invites readers to enter the imaginative worlds of two ambitious young scientists: Marie Carmichael Stopes, the paleobotanist who found international fame as a birth control advocate and feminist icon, and Charles Gordon Hewitt, the housefly expert who became one of Canada's trailblazers of nature conservation before he died in the Spanish flu pandemic.

Ecology was a new science that connected Stopes and Hewitt, the word coming from oikos, the Greek term for "home." Reproducing a small but significant cache of letters written before the First World War, the book unearths their respective versions of home and shows how these mattered in both domestic affairs and scientific passions. Their co-authored 1909 scientific article, which Hewitt called "the one little sin," is reprinted as an appendix, along with a chapter of Stopes's unpublished novel A Man's Mate, entitled "Friends." Laura Jean Cameron provides a lively, thought-provoking introduction. Her epilogue considers why Stopes and Hewitt's friendship was largely forgotten and how its recollection reveals early ecology's revolutionary promise but also its colonial and eugenic entanglements.

This Open Access book brings together authoritative voices in animal and environmental ethics, who address the many different facets of changing human-animal relationships in the Anthropocene. As we are living in complex times, the issue of how to establish meaningful relationships with other animals under Anthropocene conditions needs to be approached from a multitude of angles. During the negotiations in 2015 that led to the adoption of the Paris Agreement, one of the most contentious issues was the introduction of a dedicated provision in Article 8 on what is known as 'loss and damage'. The adoption of this new article, however, left many questions unanswered. What is the distinction between 'loss and damage', and 'adaptation'? What are the legal implications of the inclusion of loss and damage as an article in a legal treaty? How can financial assistance and compensation best be channelled to victims of climate change loss and damage? What gaps remain in the loss and damage governance system?

The Third Pillar of International Climate Change Policy: On 'Loss and Damage' after the Paris Agreement addresses these questions, and numerous others, and explores the present and future of loss and damage in the era of the Paris Agreement. This book provides an up-to-date analysis of 'loss and damage' which is often described as the third pillar of international climate change policy. 'Deep adaptation' refers to the personal and collective changes that might help us to prepare for - and live with - a climate-influenced breakdown or collapse of our societies. It is a framework for responding to the terrifying realization of increasing disruption by committing ourselves to reducing suffering while saving more of society and the natural world. This is the first book to show how professionals across different sectors are beginning to incorporate the acceptance of likely or unfolding societal breakdown into their work and lives. They do not assume that our current economic, social and political systems can be made resilient in the face of climate change but, instead, they demonstrate the caring and creative ways that people are responding to the most difficult realization with which humanity may ever have to come to terms.

Inequality in a Context of Climate Crisis after COVID uses a complex realist approach to examine the crisis of three interconnected problems: economic inequality, climate change, and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Widely acknowledged as the key driver of political discontent and social instability, economic inequality across high and middle-income countries is profoundly interconnected with climate change. Both of these issues are now set within the particularly acute context of COVID-19 and its aftermath. Confronting the crisis of these inherently interwoven issues is now the major problem for all political and governance systems. This book uses a complex realist frame of reference to understand the character of social-cultural-economic-political-ecological systems. It gives us a vocabulary and modes of thinking to confront these societal challenges and inform future action.
