Ireland was Britain's first colony and its first imperial laboratory-the place where many colonial methods were tested before being exported to the farther-flung portions of the empire. In Irish Ecomedia, Katherine M. Huber examines the environmental impacts of imperial rule and the various ways they have been expressed and rearticulated over time. Drawing on postcolonial ecocriticism, ecomedia studies, and other avant-garde critical methods, Huber considers multiple media at distinct moments of modernization in Ireland and shows how artists, writers, musicians, and filmmakers have challenged dominant narratives of development. Through photography, literature, film, radio, and music, this book reveals alternatives to colonial practices of enclosure and extraction that sacrifice peoples and places in the name of progress. The media, cultural, and environmental resources upon which Irish people and communities have drawn to assert agency bear witness to existent postcolonial modernities that promise more socially and environmentally just futures.

Urbanization is expanding at rapid rates worldwide. This growth depletes resources, destroys habitats, and negatively affects mental health by distancing people from nature. On the other hand, per-capita resource and space consumption decreases significantly in cities compared to suburban and rural forms of life. By concentrating people into dense settlements, cities render resource usage more efficiently and they free up spaces for other species and natural processes. Yet these apparent ecological benefits risk coming at the cost of human alienation from the rest of the natural world. This tension raises a fundamental philosophical question: Must the city stand in opposition to nature? Or can it be reimagined as a shared habitat in which human and other forms of life co-inhabit and co-produce the world? How can it become a city for all, including other species?

The book surveys emerging ways of conceptualizing the relationship between the urban, the natural, and the wild. It explores different models through which cities and nature might coexist, reflects on why the concept of "nature" remains philosophically meaningful despite its contested history. Although the city is nature in a trivial ontological sense-insofar as everything is, in some way, nature-ordinary language often treats the city as an entity or space opposed to nature. The book explores avant-garde approaches in urbanism and architecture that seek to conceive of and then build cities that are in various ways reconciled to nature. It analyzes possible issues of justice and aesthetics, as well as efforts to integrate the wild into the civic sphere of the city.

Glass Eel Trafficking: A Green Cultural Criminology Perspective explores the complex legal and illegal trade in European eels, with a particular focus on Spain as a key site of fishing, trading, and consumption. Long prized as a culinary delicacy and increasingly regarded as a luxury food, the European eel is now critically endangered, with overexploitation playing a major role in its dramatic decline. Its inclusion in Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) has led to strict trade restrictions within the European Union, yet trafficking continues to flourish.

Drawing on green cultural criminology, the book examines the intertwined cultural, economic, legal, and political dimensions of glass eel trafficking. Adopting multiple perspectives, it shows how cultural practices, along with material and symbolic values, shape and sustain both legal and illegal eel trade. In doing so, it highlights the broader harms associated with glass eel trafficking, emphasizing its global reach and its consequences for marginalized local communities and nonhuman species.
