This book presents a sophisticated conceptual toolkit to address the spatial complexities of the coloniality of power and extractivism. Redefining urbanism as cosmic diplomacy, it proposes a relational framework to navigate conflicts through the interdependence of bodies and ecosystems. By dismantling the nature/culture dichotomy, it uses 'body-Earth' and 'cannibal thought' to show how Indigenous knowledge resists extractivism.
The book delivers these insights by bridging decolonial theory with urban practice, utilizing the microhistories of resistance to reveal how "living spatial patterns" challenge Western planning. By adopting the ch'ixi framework, practitioners and scholars will learn to design for the coexistence of differences without assimilation, transforming urbanism into a transformative act of territorial recomposition.
Unwoven Ecologies: On the Politics of Relational Design is intended for academics, researchers, and postgraduates in the fields of urban studies, political ecology, and decolonial theory. It also serves as a vital resource for urban planners, architects, and activists seeking relational methodologies to navigate territorial conflicts and promote resilient, indigenous-led models of inhabiting the Earth.

Looking beyond current sanitation models in the US to develop new ways of managing human waste as a resource.
What happens when you flush the toilet? Where does the waste go?
In this engagingly written ethnographic study, Nick Kawa follows the trail of human bodily excrement as it travels through multiple sites in the American Midwest. In addition to documenting the treatment and transformation of sanitation waste, this book chronicles the growing movement to promote sewage sludge, or "biosolids," for fertilizing industrial farm fields, urban gardens, city parks, and ecological restoration sites-a complex endeavor that has fueled debates about potential harms to human and environmental health.
After the Flush presents the modern sanitation system through the eyes of insider experts, sharing insights from wastewater treatment operators and environmental scientists but also activists who advocate for alternative models to the industrial system. These include low-cost forms of ecological sanitation, illustrated through the author's own experiments with a compost toilet. Reframing human bodily waste as simply part of the human biome, this book offers radical possibilities for managing the human relationship to self, body, community, and ecology.

Reframing traditional conceptions of ecology
Ecologies of Resistance brings together fourteen groundbreaking studies on Latin American and Latinx writing, visual and performing arts, film, and activism that propose alternatives to prevailing colonial and neocolonial conceptions of ecology. The contributors question the artificially imposed separation of the human and nonhuman, human dominance over place, and the concept of progress measured in strictly economic terms. They also examine how the notion of ecology has been discursively framed to justify colonial systems of power. With its integration of Ancestral, Afro-Latin American, and Latinx perspectives, this collection proposes new worldviews that emphasize marginalized voices and contest modernity's troubled legacy.
Ecologies of Resistance blurs the lines that have traditionally separated artistic expression from political activism and theory. Its innovative cross-disciplinary approach and exploration of alternative practices and theories from Latin America and Latinx contexts enriches contemporary ecocritical studies and the quest for a world that upholds plural forms of being.

This book explores the critical role of ecocentric ethics in environmental conservation and restoration. It argues that adopting ecocentric principles in policies and practices is essential for achieving lasting and widespread conservation. Inspired by Aldo Leopold's land ethics, the book emphasizes respect and reverence for Nature as vital for fostering an "ecological conscience."
The book revisits the pioneering contributions of Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose, the "father of plant neurobiology," whose revolutionary findings on plant sensory responses and proto-consciousness were ahead of their time. It challenges the dichotomy of 'global versus local' by advocating for a synthesis of these concepts, while rejecting the 'othering' of nonhuman Nature. The book also calls for integrating ecocentric principles into environmental education and restoration projects, offering fresh perspectives on conservation ethics. Supported by a wealth of case studies, it provides practical insights into the application of ecocentric principles, making complex ideas accessible to a broad audience.
This book shall be useful to the departments of environmental studies, conservation biology, ethics, and education. It would also be an essential resource for undergraduate and postgraduate students, researchers, educators, and nature lovers. By addressing western environmental ethics, Aldo Leopold's contributions, and globalization, supported by case studies from diverse regions, it appeals to a global audience invested in the ethical dimensions of environmental conservation.

This book provides cutting-edge research on animal and vegan advocacy, addressing a defining moral contradiction of our time: even as concern for animals grows, their large-scale exploitation continues. How, then, does change for animals occur?
Bringing together leading behavioral and social scientists, this collection synthesizes insights from psychology and related disciplines with evidence from advocacy. The chapters explore how moral concern for animals is sparked or resisted, and why some people change while others defend existing practices. They map the pressure points where "normal" ways of treating animals begin to look less defensible, while revealing the social and psychological factors that sustain exploitation. The book also examines how change unfolds, showing how food environments, public discourse, and legal systems can reinforce or challenge animal exploitation.
This is essential reading for students and scholars in the social and behavioral sciences, as well as animal and vegan advocates, policymakers, and general readers interested in animal ethics and social change.

The green transition is no longer simply a question of better technologies or stronger carbon prices. It is a question of whether decarbonisation can remain feasible, investable, and socially durable under volatility, geopolitical rivalry, ecological limits, and distributional conflict. This book examines the transition as a systemic process shaped by bottlenecks, institutional capacity, and the interaction of policy, finance, and social legitimacy.
Bringing together political economy, governance, and green finance, the book analyses how policy instruments, metrics, resilience, and risk architectures condition the pace and durability of transformation. It explores the design of policy mixes, the role of indicators as governance devices, and the architecture of de-risking, market-making, coordination, disclosure, and supervisory frameworks. The discussion also addresses digital innovation, greenwashing risks, and the ways in which climate and regulatory uncertainty reshape capital allocation. Comparative evidence from the European Union, the United States, and China, together with analysis of European electricity markets, shows how transition strategies succeed or fail as constraints shift.
Written for academics, policymakers, regulators, practitioners, and graduate students in economics, finance, and sustainability, the book offers a framework for understanding how the transition can be governed under turbulence. It provides tools for identifying binding constraints, evaluating resilience, and understanding how credibility, sequencing, and uncertainty affect investment. Rather than offering a blueprint, it shows how transitions depend on managing sequences of constraints over time. Its central message is that a sustainable transition depends not on ambition alone, but on institutions capable of making long-term commitment credible under structural uncertainty.

Following its 2003 invasion of Iraq, the US government partnered with Iraqi exiles, global environmental institutions, country donors, and corporations to conserve Iraq's marshlands at the delta of the Tigris and Euphrates, an area purported to be the Garden of Eden. Though this conservation effort is often touted as a success story of the US war and occupation, Warzone Ecology shows that it did not result in the holistic repair of an ecosystem. Instead, it paved the way for war profiteering and the wholesale destruction of southern Iraq's ecology by oil multinationals. Drawing on more than twenty years of ethnographic and archival research across three continents, Bridget Guarasci describes a warzone ecology populated by foreign donors, experts, environmentalists, and the nonhumans they recruited to their projects. With attention to the energy, actors, and epistemes of war, Warzone Ecology points to the Iraq War as a turning point in which war became justified as repair and environmental remediation served as a vehicle for proponents to secure their control over another country's natural resources.

Animal Justice argues that the systematic wrongs inflicted on billions of nonhuman
animals in industrialised societies are structural injustices, embedded in the institutions,
economies, and cultural norms through which human societies organise collective life.
It analyses the situation of animals not as a problem of inclusion but as one of entrenched
hierarchical arrangements that obstruct the conditions necessary for self-development.
Through interconnected sites - ableism and capitalist production, migration and border
regimes, global commodity chains, and the everyday fabric of multispecies life - the book
maps the architecture of interspecies subordination and shows how the oppression of animals
is not an injustice parallel to human oppression but structurally entangled with it,
produced by the same institutional logics and sustained by the same cultural norms.
Against this diagnosis, the book develops an original normative response grounded in care
and solidarity - understood not as personal virtues or sentimental dispositions but as
demanding principles of institutional design. It asks what it would mean for political
institutions to genuinely care for all those whose lives they shape, and what solidarity
requires when the equal standing of animals is left to the discretion of the benevolent rather
than secured as a requirement of justice. Animal Justice honestly confronts the possibility
that institutional transformation may be blocked, arguing that when democratic arrangements
persistently fail to honour the demands of justice, direct action may constitute not a
rejection of political community but an act of fidelity to its ethical foundations.
Situated at the intersection of political theory, care ethics, and environmental philosophy,
this book will be of interest to students and researchers in animal ethics, animal
political theory, and animal studies, as well as advocates and activists for social and
interspecies justice.

Stories have always enabled people to make sense of the world and others, and this book encourages a radical rethinking of how we tell stories about climate change. This book proposes that, while climate change may be a result of policy failures and the incompatibility of capitalism with our finite resources, climate change represents a crisis of imagination-an inability to articulate a differentiated collective problem in ways that inspire, motivate and prompt individual and shared responses to larger but common goals.
Considering the contrasting perspectives of writer Amitav Ghosh and theorist Mark Bould, this book reconciles their views for criminologists and all those concerned about-and working towards avoiding-catastrophic climate change.

Corine Pelluchon examines the psychological and political obstacles standing in the way of the emergence of a new ecological Enlightenment, the basic principles of which she has developed in her books. Her starting point is the thesis that the current ecological and democratic crises cannot be understood without analyzing the system of domination that structures our relationships with other people, animals, nature, and with ourselves. In dialogue with phenomenology, critical theory, and existentialism, the analysis uncovers the anthropological roots of modern destructiveness: the refusal to acknowledge one's own vulnerability, the denial of death, fantasies of omnipotence, and the decoupling of technical rationality from responsibility. The author demonstrates that these mechanisms give rise to a culture of death, which manifests itself in the trivialization of violence, the destruction of life, and the erosion of democratic institutions. Violence against animals, ecological extractivism, and the growing susceptibility to authoritarian populist discourses thus appear as interconnected expressions of the same imaginary of domination and the same denial of mortality.
In response to these dynamics, the essay introduces the concept of consideratio. It refers to a way of being that forms the foundation for the virtues enabling us to find joy in changing our lifestyle. It is based on a deepening of our self-awareness as vulnerable, born, and mortal beings, through which we intensely experience our belonging to the shared world. This experience leads to an expansion of subjectivity, which Corine Pelluchon calls transdescendence. This transformation of our relationship to ourselves and to others forms the ethical and political prerequisite for an ecological democracy. At the same time, it opens the possibility of a hope, not to be understood as optimism, but as the ability to recognize, despite the crises, the harbingers of a new horizon - a perspective that gives us the energy to reframe the future.

Catching Air documents the lives of diver fishermen navigating changing marine environments and shifting conservation policies in the Dominican Republic. As nearshore ecologies decline and conservation policies are enacted to protect them, commercial divers follow fish into deeper water, risking decompression sickness, injury, and death. An incisive case study of a community on the front lines of the climate crisis, this book explores the unintended impacts of environmental regulations that, while meaning to protect vulnerable ecologies, often magnify experiences of bodily risk and dispossession among those who are most vulnerable to environmental change.

This book comprehensively explores the intersection between gender, climate change, and the green economy in Africa. It investigates the gendered impacts of climate change and emphasises the critical role women play in addressing climate change, shaping sustainable development, and the green economy.
Drawing on a range of case studies, policy analyses, and theoretical reflections, the book highlights the often-overlooked contributions of women to sustainability efforts, environmental governance, and socio-economic resilience in the face of climate impacts. It argues that women are disproportionately affected by climate change due to existing socio-economic inequalities. It challenges women's exclusion from climate policy development and implementation by placing women at the centre of climate action and as critical actors for advancing climate justice and the green economy. To bridge the gap between gender-focused research and practical policy solutions, the book provides gender-sensitive strategies for a more inclusive, just, and sustainable future.
This book will be an important read for policymakers, researchers, and students across the fields of sustainable development, African studies, gender studies, and environmental studies. Additionally, it will be a valuable resource for development practitioners and NGOs working in the space of environmental justice and sustainable development.

The Routledge Handbook of Sustainable Forestry offers a comprehensive, global exploration of current practices, foundational concepts, and emerging trends in sustainable forest management, while also reflecting on the critical role of sustainable forestry in promoting the well-being of both people and the planet.
Modern forest management must transcend the traditional focus on sustainable yields to address the broader challenges of protecting ecosystems and supporting human and planetary health. This requires considering not only the needs of present populations but also those of future generations in the face of anticipated global changes. This handbook charts the evolution of sustainability in forest management, examines the dominant paradigms shaping current practices, highlights key challenges for the future, and introduces innovative approaches to forest management. Showcasing how modern forestry help support the vision of a thriving world that we wish to live in, the handbook presents a truly global perspective, featuring international case studies spanning diverse biomes and integrates insights from a wide range of disciplines and perspectives. Framing forests as complex adaptive social-ecological systems, the handbook highlights the dynamic interconnections between ecological processes and human dimensions. Organised into seven sections, the chapters delve into sustainable forestry from historical and contemporary perspectives, methods for assessing forest sustainability, policy and legal frameworks, ecosystem services, current threats, and the pivotal role of forestry in advancing beyond sustainable to a thriving future. The Routledge Handbook of Sustainable Forestry places particular emphasis on forward-thinking strategies to prepare forest managers and ecosystems for the challenges ahead.
This handbook is an indispensable resource for students and researchers in sustainable forestry, forest management, and forest ecology, as well as those engaged in broader sustainable resource management. It will also prove invaluable to professionals involved in forest management and policy development.

The Unlively: Protesting Fossil Fuel Pollution with David Buckel examines air pollution and extinction by looking into how they might contribute, conceptually and politically, to a queer ecopolitics of death. It focuses on the figure of David Buckel, an American LGBT rights lawyer and environmentalist, who self-immolated to protest fossil fuel pollution in 2018. The author considers Buckel's death as an act of political protest, whereby a (singular) living body attacks itself as a response to the (collective) extinction of non/human life forms. The book mobilizes the materiality of death and non/human extinction, proposing the concept of the "unlively" as that which negates life or is incapable of vitality, to account for Buckel's self-immolation as well as the deadly effects of fossil fuel air pollution.
Part of the Routledge Critical Perspectives on Breath and Breathing series, the book will be indispensable for students and researchers of political ecology, environmental humanities, gender studies, and queer theory, alongside the emerging fields of queer death studies, discard studies, and critical breath studies.

Environmental issues are of fundamental importance, and a broad approach to understanding the relationship between the human economy and the natural world is essential. In a rapidly changing policy and scientific context, this new edition of Environmental and Natural Resource Economics continues to reflect an updated perspective on modern environmental topics.
Now in its sixth edition, this textbook includes enhanced and updated material on energy, climate change, population, agriculture, forests, and water, reflecting the greater urgency required to solve global, regional, and local environmental problems in these areas. It introduces students to both standard environmental economics and the broader perspective of ecological economics, balancing analytical techniques of environmental economics with a global perspective on current ecological issues such as global climate change, ocean degradation, plastic pollution, water shortages, and other environmental challenges.
Harris and Roach's premise is that a pluralistic approach is essential to understand the complex nexus between the economy and the environment. This perspective, combined with an emphasis on real-world policies, is particularly appealing to both instructors and students. Environmental and Natural Resource Economics is the ideal text for undergraduate classes on environmental, natural resource, and ecological economics, and other courses on environmental policy.

This book brings together the postcolonial and postsocialist conditions of the post-Soviet space and the Indian subcontinent through the study of human-nature relationships. These two regions are not only geographically entangled through Eurasia but are also characterized by hybrid modernization trajectories shaped by diverse socio-political responses to Western modernity and the blending of Western and non-Western ideas. Contemporary environmental debates, practices, and discourses beyond the Western liberal model are explored, with a focus on local resistance and adaptation, state interventions, and resource exploitation in the Eurasian space.
The chapters in this volume examine grassroots responses to environmental disruptions caused by modernizing legacies and ongoing extractive practices. It is demonstrated that ways of relating to the natural environment and space in the Eurasian region are deeply intertwined with questions of identity, which, in turn, reshape social life and communities' political engagement with the state. The transformative role of ecology, space, and identity in reshaping the social and political arenas in these regions is tracked, offering insights into the complex interplay between modernization, environmental change, and human agency.
This book is an essential read for students and scholars of environmental studies, postcolonial studies, postsocialist studies, geography, anthropology, and political science. It is also relevant to interdisciplinary researchers interested in human-nature relationships, identity politics, and the socio-political dynamics of the Eurasian region.
The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Globalizations.

How can humanity navigate the environmental crisis beyond the pursuit of economic growth? Drawing on diverse philosophical and political traditions and from ecological economics to environmental social sciences, this book offers a bold alternative: relational degrowth, which recognises people, communities, and nature as fundamentally interconnected.
Through conceptual analysis and real-world examples, the book explores how to reshape economic and cultural systems and demonstrates why emphasis on relations is critical for the degrowth movement. It provides theoretical foundations and practical applications for scholars and activists enacting alternatives to growth-dependent societies.

These foreboding times are producing an understandable sense of urgency and a desire to envision and enact alternative systems as soon as possible. This book is written for readers who wish not just to understand the roots of our current political and environmental dilemmas, but also for those seeking a new path toward reconciling humans and the planet.
High-energy cities have been normalized across the world and touted as the ultimate home of humans. We've all heard the claims that dense cities with their shared infrastructure and public transportation are one of the key solutions to the climate crisis. But what if cities are not just part of the problem, but are making things worse? What if these arguments for cities are obscuring real problems-and real solutions? Stephanie Pincetl presents a counterhegemonic argument about cities and development. Pincetl explains how the intrinsic energy needs of cities cannot be sustained in a post-hydrocarbon future without continuing the unequal extraction of resources and the continued de-development of non-Western, non-affluent countries. Instead, the book seeks to convince readers that relying on urbanization as a solution to climate change will only continue the extraction of enormous amounts of resources while impoverishing, polluting, and exterminating entire ways of life and obscuring the possibility that an alternative path is both necessary and possible.
Taking an interdisciplinary approach and drawing on decades of the author's scholarly and personal experience working on environmental policy and governance, this innovative volume will be of great interest to students and scholars of urban studies, sustainability, energy transitions, political ecology, and science studies.

How informed choices at the table can help protect our oceans.
More people than ever care about the environmental impacts of their daily choices, including the food we eat. Seafood is one of the most environmentally complex foods we eat. Many consumers know that overfishing and destructive practices threaten ocean ecosystems yet struggle to translate that awareness into everyday decisions. In Why Sustainable Seafood Matters, marine conservation biologist David Shiffman cuts through misinformation, greenwashing, and oversimplified labels to help readers make informed, ethical choices about what ends up on their plates.
Should you trust color-coded labels at the grocery store? Is ordering tuna or lobster always a bad choice? And how much difference can individual consumers really make? Shiffman answers these questions with clarity, nuance, and science-based insight. Guiding readers through major seafood sustainability tools such as Seafood Watch and the Marine Stewardship Council, the book explains how to interpret ratings, government data, and restaurant menus without requiring a background in marine science. Along the way, Shiffman explores the real environmental harms associated with harmful fishing practices-bycatch, habitat destruction, stock collapse-while also highlighting how effective fisheries management and consumer demand have helped once-overfished populations recover.
Why Sustainable Seafood Matters empowers seafood lovers to engage thoughtfully rather than give up entirely. By showing where progress has already been made, Shiffman makes a persuasive case that informed choices-repeated daily, by millions of people-can play a meaningful role in protecting ocean ecosystems for generations to come.

In an era where sustainability has become a defining challenge for businesses and policymakers, the role of financial institutions in shaping Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices is more crucial than ever. As financial institutions are under increasing pressure to finance green transformation in the European Union (EU), this book shows the real-life picture of their ESG activities, as well as their evolution. It provides an in-depth exploration of the increasing role of ESG factors at both the macroeconomic and microeconomic levels and offers insights into how regulations, market forces, and corporate strategies influence sustainability reporting of financial institutions and their ESG-related actions in practice. It examines the evolution of ESG policies and corporate reporting. The book focuses on financial institutions as key drivers of sustainable transformation and analyses non-financial reports through advanced text-mining methodologies to identify thematic shifts over time and assess whether ESG reporting reflects genuine action or mere regulatory compliance. Further, it evaluates the engagement of banks and insurers in ESG activities to uncover whether they act as trendsetters or followers of governmental pro-ESG initiatives. A dedicated chapter explores the challenges of greenwashing, scrutinizing discrepancies between reported commitments and actual business practices. The authors analyse both the advantages and drawbacks of ESG policies implemented in Europe and offer insight into how to measure and rank both financial institutions and countries in terms of their ESG performance. This book is designed for researchers, scholars and financial professionals, interested in understanding the complexities of ESG implementation in the financial sector. Additionally, the book provides policymakers with the ability to identify gaps in the ESG frameworks and formulate relevant policy implications.
