Mythical narratives have painted it as a promised land of the future where the problems and struggles of the present have been efficiently transcended-or concealed-by technology. Climate change demands rapid and radical changes in the way people on Earth live and move. Mobility systems the world over must change; and they are changing. Massive global efforts are underway to make transport more sustainable. However, this is mainly focused on technological solutions, such as electrifying automobility, even air travel, and the pace and scale of change is insufficient. The inequalities of existing and changing mobility systems are inhuman. So, how can we change mobilities better? Which are the areas and dimensions where "better" matters most? And what approaches can we take - given that the initiatives already under way are pushing hard? What more can we do? And, most importantly, how can we do it, and do it fairly? Changing Mobilities explores key dimensions of change.

The book takes the reader on a journey, beginning with establishing the imperative to act. Having established the urgency to act, it reflects on the struggle for radical transformation between activism and vested interests and discusses the potential of different approaches. It then turns to exploring why change seems so hard, or is so strongly resisted, exploring issues of inter- and intra-generational inequities of consumption of mobility, finding within the macro narrative opportunities to build on by recognising these differences. The final part of the book reflects on the need to change not just behaviours but institutions. It does this by reviewing how institutions operate today and why they might resist adapting to the new reality. It offers a hopeful reading of how to overcome the barriers to radical change by recognising, exploring, and accelerating the change already here and the change potential that exists through agonistic experimentation. Change is going to happen as a result of global warming - this book argues that we need to move to a more adaptive and radical footing to enable society to continue to flourish.

This book revisits the concept of the transit catchment area (TCA) and examines evolving practices in TCA planning against the backdrop of expanding big and open data (BOD) in transit-oriented land use planning.

In many developed countries and regions, car dependence and urban sprawl have led to undesirable outcomes. Improved transit and land use planning can help create well-connected areas where people, businesses, and employers want to be. But how can we make these transit zones more appealing? BOD is transforming how we understand and address this challenge. Drawing on empirical data and case studies, this book shows how TCAs can be defined across two dimensions-feature (form) and performance (function)-and how BOD, combined with traditional sources, can be used to characterize these dimensions while revealing their complex interrelationships. The author employs a mixed-method approach that includes desktop research, survey data, and quantitative analysis with visualization. Readers will learn how to redefine TCAs and enhance planning practices by leveraging BOD sources such as smartcard data, OpenStreetMap, and social media-making transit areas more attractive while addressing car dependence, urban sprawl, and related challenges such as congestion, pollution, and declining social capital.

A new "bulldozer politics" has taken hold in many Indian cities, destroying neighborhoods and displacing city residents as it pursues a global city aesthetic. Presentist accounts might explain these evictions as emergent modes of capital accumulation, but Logics of Dispossession challenges that story and situates these acts in a longer historical duree.

Employing a comparative genealogical approach to historical analysis, Liza Weinstein traces the Indian government's power to evict-from its beginnings in the colonial capitals of the British Raj, to developmental state-building projects and the rise of ethnonationalist politics, up to the present neoliberal conjuncture. Drawing on multicity fieldwork, archival research, and a database of more than a thousand eviction cases, Weinstein argues that evictions constitute a historically entrenched tool of city governance, motivated by a shifting set of intersecting, often contradictory logics that have accumulated over time and in locally specific ways across Indian cities aspiring to be world-class.

This volume revisits contemporary cultural and artistic imaginaries of African cities through a focus on their manifold connections with rural hinterlands. Tracing the multidimensional movements and flows between six African cities-Nairobi, Accra, Kampala, Pretoria/Tshwane, Johannesburg, and Lagos-and their respective hinterlands, the book maps similarities between contemporary city-hinterland interactions across the continent.

How race and space shape one another in profound and often contested ways.

How does race shape the spaces we inhabit, and how do those spaces, in turn, shape our perception of race? This book addresses these questions by bringing cultural theory into dialogue with the practices of design, planning, and architecture. Edited by K. Ian Grandison and Marlon B. Ross, the essays in this collection argue that racial identity is never separate from the landscapes, infrastructures, and built environments that are so familiar that we often fail to see their ideological and economic implications.

The first two chapters, authored by Grandison and Ross, frame the theory and methods of what they term "critical landscape studies" with case studies on historic preservation and gentrification, respectively. The other essays build on this approach from different interdisciplinary perspectives-investigating further how race is embedded in the processes of planning, preservation, and urban development, and how spatial practices are never neutral terrains but instead represent contested cultural records. Contributors reveal how the vertical hierarchies of race-long defined by the extremes of whiteness and Blackness-are continually negotiated across the categories of gender, sexuality, religion, and diaspora. Why do participatory reforms in authoritarian settings so often recentre, rather than diffuse, power? And how do institutional rules and the distribution of resources channel participatory initiatives toward outcomes that ultimately reinforce state dominance?

This book addresses these questions through an in-depth examination of participatory urban redevelopment in China. Traditional redevelopment institutions, long characterized by top-down state control and the exclusion of residents, generated widespread public resistance and social instability. In response, the Chinese state introduced participatory reforms that formally incorporated residents into decision-making processes, aiming to mitigate opposition to forced demolition, inadequate compensation, and escalating social tensions. While these reforms reshaped procedures and institutional mechanisms, their deeper effects on power relations remain poorly understood.

Building on Giddens' structuration theory, Foucault's conception of power, and Ostrom's Institutional Analysis and Development (IAD) framework, the book develops a power arena framework to examine how rules and resources structure interactions among stakeholders and shape the distribution of power in participatory urban redevelopment.

The findings demonstrate that participatory reforms have indeed enabled individual property owners and strengthened community-level capacities to engage in decision-making, partially constraining local governmental authority. However, rather than producing a shift toward collaborative governance, these reforms frequently recentre power within the state. Through its control over key institutional rules and strategic resources, local government continues to orchestrate interactions among stakeholders and maintain a dominant position within a hierarchical power structure.

By showing how participatory institutions in an authoritarian context can simultaneously empower social actors and reinforce state control, this book offers a novel explanation for the paradoxical outcomes of participation.
