The social world is full of collective entities. But how do collective entities emerge, and what are they made of? What supports their public existence? This book offers a theoretical and empirical response to these questions, through the case of one of these entities: the national economy in France. The national economy exists as an entity, with its own agency and sometimes even its own personality, in France as in almost every country. Journalists, politicians, trade unionists, business leaders, economists, and the general public closely follow the developments of the national economy and debate its potential for growth or decline.
This book offers a biography of the French economy, backtracking the successive events that, over the course of the twentieth century, helped establish it as an autonomous domain. Drawing on interviews, as well as institutional archives, Thomas Angeletti determines how economists and their devices invented the French economy and how, once present on the public scene, this entity developed a life of its own.

This book addresses contemporary global crises, ranging from pandemics and armed conflicts to economic instability and political corruption, through the lens of "social fairness". Social fairness refers to the principle that all individuals across the globe and locally should be treated equitably, with access to opportunities, resources, and rights regardless of their background, identity, or circumstances. It encompasses concepts like justice, equality, and inclusivity, ensuring that societal systems do not favor one group over another but instead promote societal wellbeing for all. Drawing on multidisciplinary perspectives based on years of international research collaboration by the "New Frontiers of Studies on Fair Society" research network, the book explores how principles of justice and wellbeing can guide responses to these complex global challenges. This volume therefore takes a global approach to advance the development of multidimensional ideals of wellbeing and fairness and proposes a new public philosophy of prosperity and justice.

Visions of Buddhist hell transformed fear of death into ritual care and hope for salvationIn thirteenth-century Japan, death was fraught with spiritual uncertainty. Salvation depended on dying with perfect concentration on the Buddha-an ideal that was seemingly unattainable amid political upheaval, famine, and social instability. The Ill-Fated Afterlife uncovers a striking religious response to those anxieties: vivid paintings of the Buddhist underworld created to care for the dead.
Centered on a monumental set of thirteenth-century Six Paths paintings preserved at Shojuraikoji temple, the study explores how images of hell functioned not merely as warnings about karmic punishment but as active ritual tools. Through careful analysis of their iconography, ritual use, and preservation, Miriam Chusid reveals how these paintings reshaped understandings of death, salvation, and the Buddhist cosmos in medieval Japan.
Scenes of torment, judgment before King Enma, and miraculous liberation invited viewers to confront suffering while participating in practices intended to aid the deceased. Rather than reinforcing a purely retributive vision of the afterlife, these images opened pathways for compassion, merit transfer, and salvation-even for those believed to face the greatest spiritual obstacles, including women and sinners.
Bringing together art history, ritual studies, and the material history of Buddhist objects, The Ill-Fated Afterlife demonstrates how powerful images transformed fear of the afterlife into a dynamic system of care for the living and the dead.

Against the backdrop of media representations of Africa through persistent and pervasive images of emaciated, starving Africans and the critical need to marshall food aid in response, Hungry Subjects places Africa's food anxiety within a broader historical context and expands ongoing food scholarship beyond its current confines in the social sciences. Njeri Githire weaves together coming-of-age texts across the African and African diasporic literary landscape in English, French, and Portuguese expression to ask how African writers incorporate food into their storylines to transmit cultural information, question norms, and propose alternatives. Eating is an intimately personal yet inherently social experience codified by public rituals and commerce, invariably linked to a larger tapestry of historical, cultural, economic, and political dynamics. Delving into the political dynamics of food as a tool of power and control alongside subversive potentialities, Hungry Subjects appraises the narrative and political thrust of (not-)eating and exposes the ways in which postcolonial manifestations of colonial-era power relations are symbolized in food's many functions and meanings.

This handbook provides a comprehensive overview of innovation research, focusing on perspectives from the social sciences. Its scope extends beyond the traditional association of innovation with economic change and development, addressing its impact across multiple spheres of society. The handbook examines how innovation impacts various societal spheres. The content is organized around the history, concepts, and themes of innovation research, covering both classical theories and recent developments. The handbook highlights key empirical findings and explores various dimensions of innovation. Topics include coordination mechanisms (via markets, organizations, or trust); the role of innovation in different spheres of society (such as the economy, law, science, and the arts); and selected fields of innovation (including sustainability, nutrition, and energy provision). It also examines the transformative role of digitalization, including phenomena such as social media, digital platforms, and crowdsourcing. In addition, it covers innovation policy, regulatory frameworks, and methodological approaches to studying innovation. Featuring contributions from well-known scholars, this handbook serves as a valuable resource for understanding innovation research across the social sciences.
Note: Parts of the handbook were translated from the original German manuscript using the help of an artificial intelligence machine translation tool. The translated content was subsequently revised by editors, chapter authors, and language editors to ensure accuracy and clarity.

At an inflection point when artificial intelligence is becoming media infrastructure, this volume offers a system-level analysis of value chains, organizational architectures, and economic rationales. Drawing on economic theory and industry observation, Zvezdan Vukanovic interrogates platform governance, strategic conduct, technological deployment, and regulatory design to explain how AI is reconfiguring production, distribution, monetization, and audience engagement. Across seven sections, he reconstructs adoption trajectories and specifies consequences for cost structures, capital allocation, revenue logics, and scale economies. He charts advertising's shift from efficiency to algorithmic allocation, automated trading, and programmatic markets within a platform-centric, data-intensive ecosystem. Chapters examine automated journalism, neural dubbing, streaming optimization, OTT personalization, and AI-enabled television, alongside their ethical and regulatory dilemmas. The book argues that AI intensifies recentralization and reintermediation through closed platforms, enabling conglomerates to exploit data and compute advantages, manage antitrust constraints, and govern fragmentation. It closes with one hundred questions for researchers to explore.

This book explains the uses of laughter in contemporary China, and demonstrates how humour in China is put to many uses. Through the use of examples from different mediums such as film, sketch comedy, stand-up and sitcoms, this book demonstrates that Chinese comedy is not just about telling jokes or presenting funny scenarios-humour is also used to criticise social trends, to mock people in authority and to allow the public to reflect on China's dramatic economic and cultural changes. The authors bring comedy figures who are well-known in China, such as Zhao Benshan, Feng Xiaogang, and Guo Degang, to the attention of international readers, using translation and explanations to explain why Chinese people find their work both amusing and meaningful. They explore uniquely Chinese forms of comedy, like xiangsheng dialogues, and consider how international genres like stand-up and situation comedy are localised in China. They demonstrate how comedy can be used to sidestep censorship and satirise the humourless restrictiveness of the Chinese government. This book appeals readers who are interested in how humour is used as a form of political communication, how humour can cross national borders, and those interested in contemporary Chinese media and politics.

Educational inequality has been largely examined through nuclear family-based research, yet the role of extended family members, especially grandparents, remains underexplored (Mare, 2011). This book investigates grandparental effects on grandchildren's educational outcomes in China, where three-generation co-residence prevails and grandparental involvement in childcare remains intensive. Results reveal that grandchildren with better-educated grandparents perform better in school, with household educational investment as a key mediator. Grandchildren also benefit academically from higher educational expectations among low-SES grandmothers, and from consistent authoritative parents and grandparents. This book suggests that educational inequality research should move beyond the parent-child dyad and explore the role of grandparents in the intergenerational reproduction of educational inequality.

This book maps out how family planning has contributed to the reshaping of the Indonesian family as found today. It uses the 2021 Family Enumeration Survey in Indonesia to pinpoint some of the key dimensions of family planning success in the country. In doing so, it points to areas that the newly-elected Prabowo government needs to address to ensure that family planning is truly women's empowerment, and men's responsibility. Fifty years ago, the dominant anxiety globally was the threat of overpopulation. The World Bank and the United Nations pressed countries to set up family planning programs to reduce high birth rates. Indonesia was an early recruit to the effort, and now, five decades later, it has achieved outstanding success. The book walks through how The National Family Planning Board trained armies of fieldworkers to promote contraceptive use, delay marriage age, and ensure universal schooling. It shows, as a result, that fertility has fallen below replacement level, education levels have risen dramatically, and the role of women in Indonesian society has blossomed. In highlighting the success of the Indonesian family planning program in reducing fertility, and providing the first analysis of the 2021 BKKBN Family Enumeration Survey, this is a landmark presentation of its key findings. This timely book is a valuable resource for demographers and population studies scholars, and for social scientists studying the fabric of Indonesian society, particularly its gender and family dynamics, and, more broadly, the role of contraception in public health.

This book manifests the Sport for Development and Peace (SDP) framework propounded by the United Nations (UN), which connects sports to physical activity and human health outcomes through its ability to combat chronic diseases and improve mental and physical health. The UN also considers sports a catalyst for the socialization of children, youths and adults, the social inclusion of the disadvantaged, economic development of local communities, and a means of fostering intercultural exchange and conflict resolution.
This volume is the first effort of its kind that seeks to examine the scope of sports to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 16, particularly in India, by way of promoting peaceful and inclusive societies. As well, it provides a platform for achieving justice for all; building effective, accountable, and inclusive communication between institutions at all levels; and ensuring equality across ethnicity, faith, and sexual orientation in any corner of the globe.
The content of this volume will be of great interest especially to sports enthusiasts, sports event organizers, trainers, management faculty, students, and scholars. In a broader scenario, however, the discussions will be helpful for policymakers to find an alternative avenue of achieving SDG through the management and promotion of sports, not only in India but in many countries in the global south.

This book presents a classical liberal perspective on the governance and economic implications of artificial intelligence. As generative AI transforms industries and institutions, this book reframes urgent debates on safety, regulation, labour, and autonomy through the lens of classical liberal economic and political philosophy.
Drawing on Austrian economics, liberal growth theory, and institutional economics, this book argues that classical liberalism and its philosophical framework has not only historically inspired the design of artificial intelligence but also remains a critical guide for its future development and application. From neural networks as emergent orders to AI agents as capital goods, the book explores how liberal principles can guide innovation, mitigate risk, and preserve individual rights. Chapters examine interpretability, the future of work, open-source commons, and the calculation debate, engaging with theorists such as Hayek, Kirzner, Simon, and Schumpeter. The book proposes polycentric governance models for AI safety and rights protection, emphasizing pluralism, contestability, and due process over precautionary control.
This book will be an essential resource for scholars in political economy, law and economics, technology policy, and digital governance. It will also appeal to a broader readership interested in academically rigorous, liberal approaches to the challenges and opportunities of the intelligence explosion.

This handbook provides a comprehensive and interdisciplinary examination of how artificial intelligence is transforming diplomacy, governance and the wider structures of society. Bringing together an international group of leading scholars, it maps the strategic, institutional, cultural, educational, economic and security implications of AI, offering an integrated framework for understanding technological change in the emerging technopolar world.
The volume's scope extends across both international and domestic spheres, revealing how AI redistributes global power, reshapes international order, alters diplomatic practice, and redefines major domains of social life including education, employment, media ecosystems, public discourse, cultural identity and national resilience. These themes are increasingly significant because AI now functions as a structuring force in world politics and societal transformation, influencing everything from international law and economic statecraft to learning systems, public opinion formation, crisis diplomacy and collective security.
Although scholarship on AI has expanded rapidly, there remains no single handbook that synthesizes these diverse developments within a coherent, diplomacy and society centred analytical framework. The core problem this handbook addresses is the lack of an authoritative reference that captures AI's simultaneous impact on global governance, diplomatic agency and societal evolution. Existing studies tend to illuminate individual sectors or policy challenges, yet a consolidated resource that brings together these intersecting transformations has been missing.
This handbook fills that gap by providing conceptual foundations, comparative perspectives and policy-oriented insights that connect technological innovation with social change and international relations. The volume is designed for an international readership of scholars, graduate students, diplomats, policymakers, educators and professionals seeking a rigorous, interdisciplinary reference on how artificial intelligence is reshaping diplomacy and society.

This book analyses the evolution of competition and shifts in user behaviour over the past quarter-century, since 2000, within Japan's network media market from an economic perspective. It focuses on Japan's distinctive media market, characterised by the traditionally high market share of terrestrial advertising broadcasts and public service broadcasting, and conducts a step-by-step empirical analysis over time based on a wealth of data-a feature that is unique. Furthermore, by analysing not only the platforms but also viewer behaviour on the demand side, and by examining the state of digitalisation and internet distribution, the study offers a comprehensive analysis. Additionally, by focusing on bias in the newspaper market-where political impartiality is not mandated by law-and exploring the possibility of skewed reporting frequency and volume rather than content itself, the book makes a novel contribution. It thus serves as a scholarly work that offers valuable insights for future institutional design in the media market.

This landmark volume offers the first comprehensive demographic examination of family transformation in contemporary India, situating the country's evolving landscape within the Second Demographic Transition (SDT) framework. It reveals a family system in flux, caught between deep-rooted collectivist traditions and rising individual aspirations. Grounded in extensive primary research, including unique, large-scale surveys across India, the book offers a thoughtful, data-driven analysis of how shifting family dynamics and evolving models of family-building are impacting vulnerable populations. These include women managing the "second shift," children shaped by diverse family structures, the elderly facing the erosion of care networks, and families bearing the responsibility of caring for disabled members. It navigates critical topics from transformations in nuptial bonding and cohabitation patterns among the urban educated to shifting childbearing practices and evolving marriage markets. What distinguishes this treatise is its capture of the fundamental dialectic: the tension between the "golden cage" of traditional marriage and the shadows of the SDT, rising age at marriage, marital dissolution, and individual self-actualisation, unfolding within persistent familial obligation and their impact on women's status and economic empowerment. Weaving macro-level data with rich micro-level evidence, the volume illuminates both winners and losers of this transition, offering indispensable insights for scholars, policymakers, and practitioners worldwide.

Contrary to what German historians often claim, the avant-garde movements of the early 20th century did not peter out or even fail. Although the Nazi dictatorship destroyed the Bauhaus, Dada, and their legacy in Germany in the 1930s, it also triggered a wave of emigration. Many of those who were displaced went to the United States, where they contributed to the avant-gardization of the art world, and where subsequent generations were able to continue developing the project that had remained unfinished in Europe.
Walter Benjamin coined the term "politicization of art" to describe the efforts of avant-garde artists who opposed the "aestheticization of politics" by fascism. The cultural centers of the United States succeeded in picking up on the impetus of activist art practices. This study examines the characteristic differences between the art worlds on both sides of the Atlantic, which arose as a result of historical developments and continue to exist to this day.

This book explores the interactions between two regions marginalized by the Eurocentric worldview: East Asia and Latin America. Shaped by colonial legacies, economic relegation, and exoticized cultural representations, both regions have been conceptualized in contrasting ways -East Asia as the birthplace of ancient civilizations and the frontier of economic expansion, and Latin America as a locus of colonial adventure, natural wealth, and political disturbance. By examining how these regions confront and reinterpret these narratives, the book draws on history, literature, and migration flows to offer an archive of an interconnected world system. Assembling diverse intellectual traditions, case studies, and hybrid discourses emerging from various forms of transregional connectivity, this book aims to demonstrate how dialogue among distinct peripheral positions introduces new dynamics into cultural analysis.

Plastic surgery has exploded in popularity in the recent decades, with South Korea emerging as a leader of the global beauty economy. In Remedying the Body So-Rim Lee explores a cultural discourse of plastic surgery in South Korea through the feminist politics of care. Pulling together archival and cultural materials from the 1950s to the 2020s, Lee takes Korea as a paradigmatic example to reimagine coalitional ways of surviving a world governed by oppressive bodily norms.
Drawing from the Korean term koch'ida ("to cure or mend"), Lee uses "remedy" to name a broad spectrum of medical interventions performed to change the bodily appearance to arrive at a bodily norm. Remedy, however, is much more than medical treatment alone. This book contends that remedy is also a critical cultural ethos, a social performance of subjectivity, and a material practice of embodiment where state biopolitics and individual desire for belonging are inextricably entangled.

How lens-based art from Southeast Asia offers alternative visions for ecological sustainability
A new paradigm of ecologically minded artistic practices is taking shape in Southeast Asia - one that at once tracks ecological destruction and works specifically to cultivate deeper feelings of empathy toward the environment. Examining a range of photography and video work, The Empathic Lens explores how these lens-based projects respond to increasingly urgent concerns related to climate disaster and capitalist acceleration.
In this analysis of work produced across Cambodia, Vietnam, and Singapore, Brianne Cohen highlights artists for whom rampant urban development, resource extraction, and environmental toxicity are close at hand. As each artist takes their lens to these realities, Cohen shows, they draw on Indigenous knowledge and local traditions that have long recognized the kinship of humans and nonhumans. Engaging often-censored discourses of Indigenous land relations and environmental justice in a region with a long history of colonial and neocolonial development, Cohen traces genealogies of empathy and animism to demonstrate how these works develop sustainable visions for the future coexistence of planetary life.
The first critical account of marginalized artworks that depict the centrality of the more-than-human in Southeast Asian Indigenous worldviews, The Empathic Lens makes a powerful case for the relevance of Southeast Asian lens-based art in contemporary media practice and the art of the Anthropocene.

This book explores the life, artistry, and legacy of Razak Abdul Aziz one of Malaysia's pioneering contemporary composers-through his seminal vocal work, 10 Pantun Settings. This song cycle, composed between 1981 and 1990, reimagines traditional Malay pantun poetry through a Western art song framework, blending cultural heritage with compositional innovation. The book begins with a biographical portrait of Razak, tracing his multicultural upbringing, academic journey in the USA and UK, and his contributions to Malaysia's music education and composition landscape. It then delves into the compositional techniques behind 10 Pantun Settings, highlighting Razak's use of "Frankensteining"-a method of assembling disparate pantun texts into a cohesive musical narrative-and his rich use of musical imagery to evoke kampung life, childhood nostalgia, and emotional depth. Through musico-literary analysis, the monograph uncovers a deeper narrative embedded in the cycle: the emotional journey of an abandoned wife in a traditional arranged marriage. Beneath the playful surface of children's poetry lies a poignant commentary on emotional resilience, covert feminism, and symbolic resistance. The book also documents the performance history of the cycle, from its early academic presentations to full theatrical stagings in Malaysia, Japan, New Zealand, and the Czech Republic. Drawing on interviews, archival materials, and performance analysis, this work offers a multidimensional exploration of Razak's compositional voice and the cultural significance of 10 Pantun Settings. It invites readers to engage with Malaysian musical identity, gender narratives, and the transformative power of music as a vessel for storytelling and cultural preservation.

The volume aims to introduce Baul to the global audience by delving deep into their songs and performances. It offers a fresh perspective on the Bauls, showing how, through their unique lifestyle and strategies, they are capable of foregrounding their cultural habitus, accentuating the sahajiya principle, dismantling scriptural religion and the monopoly of colonial Bengali intellectuals, and forging an affinity with land and nature in an age of religious intolerance, global economy, and jingoism. The volume features a range of compelling chapters analysed from various critical perspectives. This Handbook, an international endeavor in cultural political psychology, integrates global experts' insights to examine the psychological role of sign systems in policy, power, and politics. The focus is on how meaning, derived from action, influences power negotiations, requiring an exploration of the individual and their co-created signs. Addressing the challenge of converting rich theories into practical applications, the Handbook aspires to clarify complex phenomena, promoting a holistic understanding of individuals, communities, and the interplay of symbols, identity, and politics. By democratizing discourse and promoting inclusivity, especially from non-Western and underrepresented contexts, we hope to unravel the world's intricate political tapestries.

The book is a significant contribution to the body of existing migration studies study and is genuinely comprehensive in its covering. In addition to the many people in Bangladesh, the global north, and South Asia whose concern is extremely practical rather than academic because they must coexist with the system in order for it to function. The Rohingya situation is a severe humanitarian disaster that necessitates a thorough comprehension of the media's function in influencing public opinion and foreign policy. The effectiveness of media strategies in the Rohingya repatriation process is investigated in this study, which offers insightful information to help governments, media outlets, and humanitarian organizations enhance their crisis management initiatives.

The volume offers a pioneering intervention in global literary and cultural studies by tracing representations of disability across the entire twentieth century-from early modernist literature to late postcolonial and popular cultural forms. Unlike most existing works that focus primarily on twenty-first-century narratives, this volume provides rare historical depth and a globally inclusive perspective.
Bringing together literary, cinematic, regional, and mythic narratives from Western and non-Western contexts-including Indian literature and film-the book constructs a comparative framework that illuminates how disability is embedded in diverse historical, cultural, and political settings. Covering texts from Kafka and Faulkner to Odia fiction and Indian partition narratives, it spans early modernism, interwar poetics, post-World War II trauma narratives, and late-century cultural media such as cinema, comics, autobiography, and myth.
Balancing academic rigour with accessibility, this book is an essential resource for scholars, students, and educators interested in literature, culture, and critical disability studies.
