Explores how non-Israeli filmmakers have used the essayistic travelogue to capture Israel's complex and contested landscape.

Brief Encounters offers the first extended exploration of a distinct and often overlooked corpus of travel documentaries made by foreign filmmakers in Israel and British-Mandate Palestine over the past century. Focusing in particular on the tumultuous period of the 1960s to 1970s, Ohad Landesman shows how renowned filmmakers such as Chris Marker, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Jules Dassin, Susan Sontag, and Claude Lanzmann turned to the essayistic travelogue to grapple with a bitter reality of armed conflicts and political upheavals. At the journey's outset, each filmmaker had a different vision of Israel in mind, shaped by either socialist ideals, biblical myths, or Zionist sympathies. Yet what was found rarely affirmed initial expectations. And accordingly, these travelogues end up becoming testaments to disillusionment, as the filmmakers come to confront the unrealizability of their fantasies through the landscape of Israel. Using close analysis, the book aims to recover the significance of such transnational perspectives for what they say about the evolving image of the Israeli nation and, more broadly, the fruitful intersection of cinema and travel.

An interdisciplinary roster of contributors across the humanities and social sciences draws connections between contemporary culture, neoliberalism and affect to examine representations of emotional self-management in personal, professional, and social contexts in the 21st century.

One of the most salient aspects of neoliberalism is the way its pervasiveness extends to the personal sphere, subjecting the personal to market logics as even private emotions become commodities to be administered and owned. Analyzing a range of cultural texts - including shows like Severance, novels like The Corrections, and even art exhibits like Contemporary Models of Realism from the Museum of Contemporary Art in Krakow - contributors demonstrate how the omnipresence of neoliberalism across ideological perspectives and cultural contexts trains individuals to view themselves as individualist, competitive entrepreneurs in all facets of life on a global scale.

Although this collection reveals art's capacity to reproduce and circulate neoliberal logics amid unsuspecting audiences, it also - perhaps more importantly - highlights the ways in which aesthetic forms can conjure resistance.

Explores a wide range of utopias and dystopias in film and literature and their important relationship to our present moment.

Wastelands and Wonderlands challenges readers, in these uniquely dystopian times, to reevaluate their ideas about utopia and dystopia. Bringing together film, literary, and utopian studies scholars from across the world, this interdisciplinary collection explores a wide range of utopias and dystopias in film and literature, from visionaries as varied as William Morris and George Lucas to such fresh new and distinctive voices as Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah and N. K. Jemisin. Contributors dismantle myths about utopian and dystopian film, literature, and television and explore the nature of utopian and dystopian fiction and its important relationship to our present moment. Whether through ecocritical work, work aimed at decolonizing utopian studies, debates about our relationship with technology and the nonhuman, forms of utopian hope and pessimism, or new thinking about cinematic and literary techniques and production, these essays offer fresh insight into the subject area and something to interest any reader.

Explore the deep philosophical questions lurking in the Fallout wasteland

The Fallout franchise welcomes you to the Wasteland through both the post-nuclear role-playing games and the Amazon streaming series. Set against a retro-futuristic world of mutants, warlords, and weird science, the decent and wicked alike eke out survival despite the irradiated dangers surrounding them. But beneath the irreverent humor and constant violence, Fallout forces its players and characters into circumstances with weighty philosophical implications, and it compels fans of all stripes to consider complex, sometimes harrowing moral dilemmas.

Fallout and Philosophy tackles these issues head-on. In the 26 essays included in this volume, philosophers follow the implications of Fallout's dystopian world and the challenging questions it raises to their logical conclusions. Even if war never changes, could wars be waged justly? Is freedom possible in the closed and controlled world of the Vaults? Are "kill everything" playthroughs harmless fun, or are they ethically suspect?

  • Are the Institute's synths mere machines, or are they people? How can we tell?
  • Is the Brotherhood justified in hoarding pre-War technology?
  • Is Lucy's Golden Rule too idealistic for the world outside her Vault?
  • Is it defensible to bring children into a postapocalyptic wasteland?
  • "Everyone disliked that" ending of Fallout 3, but why?

If you're a fan of the franchise and you want to think more deeply about - and more fully appreciate - all things Fallout, then it's time to climb out of your Vault and strap on your power armor. Let Fallout and Philosophy be your Wasteland Survival Guide.

Colleen Elizabeth Kelley and Michael J. Miller explore how democracy both functions and falters when media, politics, and rhetorical discourses collide.

Democracy thrives on information and public engagement. Digital spaces and technologies, while significantly enriching our cyberculture and playing a crucial role in our interconnected global system, have introduced significant threats to our democracy including misinformation, privacy concerns, and public polarization as platforms emerge as increasingly powerful intermediaries. Examining discursive manifestations of these problematic intersections during the 2024 presidential election cycle, Kelley and Miller demonstrate the impact of digital media and a digitally disrupted political ecosystem on democracy in the United States.

Kelley and Miller provide a salient reminder that political frameworks - especially democracy - are mediated systems constituted and agreed upon through communication behaviors. Our political future, they contend, can still be shaped by the people.

Beyond Ballot Boxes explores how social media has transformed electoral politics by influencing voter behavior, political communication, and democratic integrity. The book introduces Digital Democracy Disruption (D (3)) Theory to analyze how misinformation, algorithmic bias, and computational propaganda shape elections worldwide. By comparing case studies from the United States, Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan, the authors examine the impact of digital media in both developed and emerging democracies. The book also discusses regulatory challenges, misinformation countermeasures, and policy recommendations for preserving democratic resilience in the digital era. Tracing the historical evolution of media from print to digital platforms, the book highlights the role of traditional media in shaping public opinion before examining how social media has democratized access to information while simultaneously fostering misinformation and ideological divides. It explores the mechanisms of digital propaganda, distinguishing between misinformation (false but unintentional content) and disinformation (deliberate manipulation). The authors discuss the rise of deepfakes, troll farms, and bot-driven campaigns, with case studies including the Cambridge Analytica scandal and the spread of WhatsApp-driven misinformation in South Asia.

When the New York Daily News launched in 1919, it didn't just sell papers-it reinvented them. Brash, populist, and impossible to ignore, the United States' first tabloid quickly became the country's best-selling newspaper, reaching millions of readers and reshaping the way Americans consumed news. The swaggering epitome of big-city journalism, it mixed sensationalist stories about crime and celebrities with in-depth reporting about local and national politics. Yet by the 1970s, the paper was struggling to adapt to changes both in New York City and in how Americans got their news. On top of that, the Daily News faced bruising competition with Rupert Murdoch's New York Post, a devastating strike, a shrinking newsroom, and repeated accusations of racism. Somehow, for decades, it weathered these setbacks-until the late 2010s, when the cuts went so deep that they reduced the publication to a shadow of its former self.

Drawing on never-before-cited documents and more than sixty interviews, The People's Paper tells the story of the Daily News through the eyes of the owners, journalists, and readers who defined it. Matthew Pressman shows how the paper both reflected and shaped the transformations of New York City and American journalism. He argues that tabloids, despite their reputation, were crucial to an informed public, giving ordinary people reliable news in a relatable, digestible way. Lively and definitive, The People's Paper links the history of the Daily News to today's crises in media and politics.

Modernity was characterised by a belief that progress would automatically lead to a better future. Today, that optimism has evaporated. In its place we have global heating, multiple wars, economic austerity and a prevailing sense of malaise. Now the primary concern is to limit the damage and avert the catastrophe. Even if that succeeds, we will still be faced with unprecedented change. We are looking at a future where collective survival will take precedence over individual and collective self-fulfillment. Adaptation will be the guiding principle of society. This is raising momentous questions about our understanding of time, of politics and of ourselves ? to which progressive political forces and humanity as a whole are going to have to find answers.

This book offers the first transnational account of screen agencies as a collective body supporting and shaping the European screen sector. Alternatively known as film funds or film institutes, screen agencies are publicly funded bodies which intervene at each stage of the value chain for film and television content. Agencies such as the Danish Film Institute, Creative Scotland, Screen Ireland and Northern Ireland Screen perform a diverse range of functions including allocating funds, developing talent, fostering international collaborations, and promoting cultural value. They play a crucial role in mitigating the risks associated with creative production, and within smaller nations - the focus of this research - their attempts to leverage scale make their role even more significant within the sector. Using original empirical research gathered from interviews conducted with those working within national agencies in Belgium, Croatia, Denmark, Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, this book offers critical insight into international screen production through the institutional lens of screen agencies.

Political Communications is a now established series of eleven books, the first of which appeared in the aftermath of the watershed General Election of 1979. Cumulatively the series offers unique insights from both practitioner and academic perspectives with commentaries from those responsible for organizing, reporting, and analyzing every campaign held during the last 45 years. The primary focus of the books is to understand the interplay between the rival parties, various media and the voting public, and the similarities and differences between this and previous elections.

This book resembles previous volumes in terms of its structure. The content will, however, differ not least because this election ended in the return of a new government. Political Communication in Britain (2024) will provide commentaries from party insiders about a campaign whose outcome was seemingly not in doubt, but which nonetheless delivered some surprising results due to the idiosyncrasies of the UK electoral system. The book will examine the workings and efforts of various rival campaign, both online and off, in the context of a hastily called election held in July for the first time since 1945. The reporting of events and role of journalism in seeking to hold the rival politicians will be discussed including by those responsible for delivering some of the most popular news coverage. A range of polling experts will examine how voters experienced the campaign through use of quantitative and qualitative based forms of analysis to provide insights into why and how so many different parties were able to gain the necessary support to secure representation in the House of Commons. Aside from Labour, the other beneficiaries from this campaign were the Liberal Democrats, Reform UK, the Greens, and a range of independents: the reasons for their successes will be complemented by explorations of why the Conservatives and Scottish Nationalists succumbed to such heavy defeats.

In 1977, George Lucas created a galaxy far, far away that somehow contained no Latinos. Forty-seven years later, Diego Luna's Cassian Andor speaks unapologetically accented English as he leads a rebel cell against the Empire, Pedro Pascal's Din Djarin anchors Disney's flagship series, and Oscar Isaac's Poe Dameron commands X-wing squadrons with a confidence that refuses to apologize for difference. The transformation didn't happen by accident-it was fought for character by character, film by film, against resistance both corporate and cultural.

In Galactic Herencia, Christopher Gonzalez uses personal, historical, and critical reflection to trace this long arc from erasure to visibility, examining how Latinx actors bring cultural resonance to roles in a fictional universe that never explicitly acknowledges their heritage-and what it means when so few performers must carry the hopes of so many. The book moves from the painful absences of the original trilogy through the breakthrough moments of Rogue One and The Mandalorian, to the current struggles over authentic representation in an era of franchise expansion and toxic fandom. By centering Latinx perspectives on a globally dominant franchise, Galactic Herencia makes visible the cultural work that representation does-demonstrating that genuine inclusion isn't about quotas but about empowering stories that affirm our full humanity.

Academic philosophy confronts heavy metal for the first time

Previous scholarly treatments of heavy metal have originated outside philosophy or targeted popular audiences rather than professional scholars. The Heaviest Ideas in the Universe: A Philosophy of Heavy Metal is the first edited volume applying rigorous philosophical inquiry directly to the genre. Featuring newly written papers by established scholars worldwide, the collection draws on diverse philosophical traditions and methodologies.

Chapters engage aesthetics, metaphysics, epistemology, identity theory, and ethics as they operate within heavy metal's cultural and sonic landscape. The volume includes a foreword by D. Randall Blythe and a chapter by Dave Hunt, both lead vocalists of influential metal bands. Contributors draw on phenomenology, philosophy of religion, and political philosophy to examine questions the genre raises.

Readers will also find:

  • Sustained philosophical analysis of the relationship between heavy metal and religious themes, belief structures, and ritual practice
  • Examinations of identity formation and authenticity as constructed through heavy metal fandom, performance, and subcultural participation
  • Aesthetic arguments addressing questions of beauty, sublimity, noise, and artistic value specific to extreme musical forms
  • Ethical inquiries into transgression, violence, and moral responsibility as expressed through heavy metal lyrics and imagery
  • Epistemological investigations into how knowledge claims and skepticism function within heavy metal culture and discourse

Professional philosophers, advanced students in aesthetics and philosophy of music, and educated readers drawn to heavy metal's intellectual dimensions will find this volume opens sustained scholarly dialogue. The Heaviest Ideas in the Universe provides the philosophical framework for rigorous engagement with a genre long overlooked by academic philosophy.

American Film and the Culture Wars: Battleground in the Trump Era is an exploration of the relationship between American cinema and what many have referred to as the "Trump era," the "Trump age," or even the "Trump phenomenon."

This book contends that American cinema offers an insight into this fractious period and emerged as one of the primary battlegrounds on which a war of interpretation was fought, a frontline in what many refer to as the "culture wars." This resulted in a body of films which should not be regarded as disposable entertainment, but rather as visceral cultural artefacts which reflect, engage with, and have even been able to influence the tumultuous period in a range of palpable ways. Films discussed include: Sound of Freedom (2023), Top Gun: Maverick (2022), Get Out (2017), Superman (2025), Sicario: Day of the Soldado (2018), 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi (2016), and The Hunt (2020), among many others.

Across six theoretically informed but accessible chapters, McSweeney interrogates how American film emerged as a striking manifestation of the political and historical moment in which they were formed: engaging with a broad tapestry of social movements (Black Lives Matter [2013-], Me Too [2017-], and Times Up [2018-]); genres (superhero, horror, action, science fiction film); and key issues, debates, and events (gun control, abortion, religion), revealing that it is still the cinematic medium which provides a frame of reference for how we understand and comprehend the world, as much as, if not more than, it has ever done.

This Came to You from Chicago explores the unique traits, style, and practices of "Chicago Television" from World War II to the 1990s. Jason J. Nebergall traces how, unlike mainstream stations, city-based broadcasters, who often worked day jobs, provided a platform for underrepresented groups to share their perspectives and allowed citizens to experiment with storytelling, representation, and engagement. In analyzing the idea and follow-through of "to and from Chicagoans," Nebergall also illuminates how Chicago Television promoted civic engagement, fostered a sense of belonging and solidarity among residents, and contributed to the evolution of technological advances through the artistic risks of local and independent producers.

This Came to You from Chicago presents an ideological framework that analyzes Chicago Television as being deeply rooted in the political beliefs of its creators. Issues involving labor rights, women's liberation, the civil rights struggle, LGBTQ communities, and anti-capitalist activism appeared throughout the history of television in the Windy City. By bringing attention to the locality and widespread function of this programming system, Nebergall reveals how independent television developed with the vibrancy and diversity of Chicago's cultural landscape and local advocacy for social justice.

A fresh and eye-opening new explanation of AI and how its focus on specifics is changing our ideas about ourselves and our world. From a Harvard researcher, philosopher, entrepreneur, former comedy writer, and bestselling author. Amid the clamor about AI, Beautiful Particulars poses a unique question: Not how our use of AI will change what we do, but how the idea of AI may already be subtly, yet fundamentally, reshaping how we think about ourselves and our world. In clear, engaging, and even humorous prose, David Weinberger offers a new perspective on how machine learning works and how it may already be changing our basic and deepest ideas. Through lively examples, he shows that AI s success with all its risks and dangers is taking us past our millennia of reliance on laws and principles by revealing what morality, free will, creativity, causality, knowledge, and even reality itself look like now that we re able to let the particulars speak their tiny truths. The author poses questions not usually asked: What does a coin look like to AI? When AI gives you evidence that the Earth is round, why are its own reasons for saying that so different? Why does an AI image generator create a 'selfie' of ancient Aztec warriors with broad smiles that it 'believes' are historically unlikely? If AI becomes conscious but bodiless, could it still make good moral decisions? Why is the world so much better at being causal than AI could ever 'understand'? How does AI show us that genuine creativity is not about a 'spark' but about moments that feel right? And how can you take the temperature of a joke? Beautiful Particulars offers a new and hopeful perspective on how machine learning works, and how that s already changing how we understand what it means to be human in the age of AI.

Through a number of narrative case studies, this book explores how innovative news-academic partnerships are reshaping the landscape of local journalism.

Local news is facing a dire outlook across the United States, and many rural and urban communities increasingly have little to no access to credible or comprehensive local news and information. As factors including the rise of online news sources and the consolidation of media ownership contribute to the decline in local news outlets, the battle to control local news - and therefore, the power to craft influential messages to communities -- has only intensified in recent years. In this book, Lara Salahi explores how news-academic partnerships are emerging as a viable business model for local news in which higher education institutions can be a strong contender against other entities in local news production and ownership. By examining successful case studies and innovative models, Salahi demonstrates how collaborations between local news outlets and academic institutions can provide financial stability, foster community engagement, and ensure the continuation of high-quality local news coverage. Through these partnerships, she posits, local news outlets can secure resources, expand their reach, and effectively serve as the bedrock of democratic societies by providing accurate, relevant, and community-centric news and information. Ultimately, this book explores both the opportunities and challenges offered by the transformational approach of news-academic partnerships to not only preserve the integrity of journalism, but also to enhance media literacy while ensuring the long-term survival of vital local news outlets.

By highlighting the interplay between esotericism, conspiracy theory, and fandom, Cypher Culture examines how marginalized and embattled groups learn to read cultural texts for hidden meanings in hostile environments. Drawing on Leo Strauss's theory of esotericism, Joseph Packer and Ethan Stoneman argue that "reading between the lines" has moved from classical philosophy into popular culture, where queer fandoms, political extremists, and others uncover whispered messages in mass media. The result is a shared interpretive practice with radically different ethical and political consequences.

Cypher Culture presents a series of case studies capturing a wide spectrum of esoteric fandom, from interpretations of Shakespeare and Disney to analyses of Taylor Swift, The Dark Knight trilogy of Batman films, and the QAnon phenomenon. Exploring the ways groups interact with these texts helps uncover the dynamics of fan culture and its political dimensions. The book's focus on the interplay of scene, surface, and receiver provides a nuanced framework for understanding how esoteric interpretations take hold and circulate within fan communities, particularly online.

Pairing close readings of popular media with cultural analyses of their dedicated communities of esoteric readers, Cypher Culture diagnoses the stylistic, contextual, and authorial elements of a text that invite esoteric interpretations. This approach goes beyond traditional views of esotericism, as formulated by Strauss, demonstrating its evolution in the digital age as not just an authorial strategy but a hermeneutic lens through which fans interpret popular culture.

This study examines the intersection of media, politics, and public discourse in Uganda, tracing historical trajectories from colonial print cultures to contemporary digital activism. It adopts a qualitative approach grounded in mediatization theories, arguing that Uganda's media system operates as a field of negotiated hegemony where power and resistance coexist. Across twelve chapters, the book explores print, broadcast, digital, religious, and gendered mediations of political life, revealing how communication practices construct, sustain, and challenge state authority. The findings underscore that media in Uganda is not merely a reflection of society but a central arena where citizenship, identity, and legitimacy are continually performed and contested.

A fascinating, free-wheeling exploration of LEGO and what makes it such an endlessly fun toy. The perfect gift book for your favorite LEGO fan, from an expert in play design who spent years conducting research inside the company. This Is Why You Love LEGO is a rare insider s exploration of why LEGO is the world s most beloved toy. Grounded in three years of embedded research within the LEGO House design team, Jess Rahbek blends insightful analysis with accessible storytelling in this concise, but mighty deep dive. Rahbek narrates the book via the creative journey of a young LEGO builder, Theodor, who is making a space pirate ship. Through Theodor, the book looks at the full range of LEGO play, from following specific instruction manuals to improvising from only a vague or no idea of what one wants to create (what he calls 'drifting and shifting'). Along the way, the author also discusses the toy s Danish roots in the belief in a child s autonomy, describes how the designers navigate 'playful tension,' dissects how the LEGO play experience actually works, and unpacks the unique design of LEGO bricks and their inner cylinders. The first book about the toy to get into the nitty gritty details of the dynamics of the bricks and the resulting play experience, This Is Why You Love LEGO is uniquely targeted to the millions of Adult Fans of LEGO (AFOLs), play industry professionals, and the booming kidult demographic. Even the biggest LEGO fan will walk away with a deeper understanding of their love for LEGO.

This Palgrave Pivot presents a new account of the social and epistemic processes that led to the creation of The Authoritarian Personality (TAP), a classic of political psychology published in 1950, which has been cited frequently in recent literature on authoritarian political parties and movements. Studies of the intellectual migration of European scholars and scientists to the United States have recognized TAP as one of the most successful results of the multiple efforts by emigres and their American colleagues to reflect on the wider implications of the Nazi takeover of power, as well as the issue of whether and why elements of Nazi racism and antisemitism existed in America. However, the work is generally treated as part of the history of the Frankfurt School, and discussion has centered on the contribution of Theodor W. Adorno, whose chapters encompass less than one-fourth of the volume. This narrow perspective largely ignores the intensive collaboration between the Institute of Social Research in New York and the Public Opinion Study Group in Berkeley, California, and also among the four authors themselves. This is particularly true for the central contribution of the emigre Austrian psychologist Else Frenkel-Brunswik to TAP, which had little to do with the approach of the Frankfurt School. This book therefore investigates in detail the social circumstances that led to the creation of TAP, and pays equal attention to the work of all of TAP's authors, including the two Americans who wrote more than half the volume. It also considers whether and how the authors' ideas and methods interlinked in the volume itself, as well as how the approach of TAP relates to other research on antisemitism and ethnic prejudice in the USA during the 1940s.

In Reframing the Long 1960s Estella Tincknell explores the way British crime films and television series made during or about that extended decade have been marked by ongoing tensions between nostalgic myths of masculinity, power and whiteness and attempts to challenge or transform those dominant narratives.

Tincknell blends cultural analysis and original research with close reading to examine a wide variety of crime subgenres from police procedurals and heist films to gangster narratives and thrillers, comparing the approaches of texts such as Z-Cars (1962-1978), Robbery (1967), Get Carter (1971) and The Sweeney (1975-1978) with those of period dramas aimed at twenty-first century audiences, including The Great Train Robbery (2013), Legend (2015), The Trial of Christine Keeler (2019) and Endeavour (2012-2023). Tincknell identifies the important intersections between text, genre, nostalgia and popular memory as she traces how persistent myths about crime and criminality-and about "the long 1960s" as a defining period for British cultural identity-have been represented and recirculated.

Traditional Journalism in a Digital World offers a distinct view of independent community media by treating it as a subculture, outside of mainstream local media. Independent operators exist on the margins of mainstream media, and by recognizing them as a subculture, their struggles are revealed.

The book features the personal accounts of a sample of UK independent publishers and follows them across a ten-year period. It records their highs and lows, including how they responded to the Covid-19 pandemic. One of the fundamental problems operators faced was that policy makers viewed legacy mainstream local and independent internet era publishers as the same, whereas existing policy favors legacy providers with their elevated status and superior lobbying power.

This study reveals the absence of a level playing field. Independents' coping strategies are revealed as they slowly organized themselves into a sector. The focus is on UK operations, but the same approach can be applied to local media globally. This book presents a unique use of classical subcultural theory and will appeal to both journalism scholars and social scientists alike.

Discover exciting new research illuminating the most mysterious centuries of British history.

How Roman Britain ended is one of the most controversial questions in British history. Unique among former Roman citizens in Western Europe, the Britons established long-lived kingdoms, resisting 'barbarian' political takeover for centuries. Yet so little is known of them from written records that even the names of most of their kings are effectively lost to history.

Packed with the latest discoveries and ground-breaking research, Professor Ken Dark brings the fascinating, but mysterious, world of these rulers and their kingdoms to life. Archaeological evidence, along with re-analysis of the few existing texts, reveals an unexpectedly sophisticated society, connected to a wider international network of trade and cultural contacts than might until recently have seemed imaginable. Ken Dark demonstrates through the latest archaeological discoveries that Tintagel - an eroded coastal stronghold in Cornwall, closely associated with the later legend of King Arthur - was a royal fortress and trading centre of one of the most important British kingdoms of this period.

This is a historical period filled with memorable characters and stories: from the outraged churchman Gildas, attempting to reform the corrupt rulers he thought threatened civilized life itself, to St. Patrick, who played a major part in converting Ireland to Christianity, to no less than King Arthur - whose historical existence Dark shows to be much more likely than usually supposed.

This book explores the history of Los Angeles cinema and the complex relationship that American film has had with its host city throughout history.

It is impossible to talk about the City of Angels without talking about its movie business. The history of American cinema is so intertwined with Los Angeles that the term "Hollywood" is used interchangeably with "American film" worldwide. From the early 20th-century migration of film pioneers from the East Coast to the emergence of local subcultures and global genres, John Trafton traces how the city has been imagined by insiders and outsiders alike.

Key case studies include the L.A. Rebellion School, disaster cinema, and the intersections of independent cinema with the music scene and VHS culture. The book culminates in an exploration of Los Angeles neorealist cinema - a form that centers marginalized voices and challenges the myth of Hollywood glamour.
