Visions of Buddhist hell transformed fear of death into ritual care and hope for salvationIn thirteenth-century Japan, death was fraught with spiritual uncertainty. Salvation depended on dying with perfect concentration on the Buddha-an ideal that was seemingly unattainable amid political upheaval, famine, and social instability. The Ill-Fated Afterlife uncovers a striking religious response to those anxieties: vivid paintings of the Buddhist underworld created to care for the dead.
Centered on a monumental set of thirteenth-century Six Paths paintings preserved at Shojuraikoji temple, the study explores how images of hell functioned not merely as warnings about karmic punishment but as active ritual tools. Through careful analysis of their iconography, ritual use, and preservation, Miriam Chusid reveals how these paintings reshaped understandings of death, salvation, and the Buddhist cosmos in medieval Japan.
Scenes of torment, judgment before King Enma, and miraculous liberation invited viewers to confront suffering while participating in practices intended to aid the deceased. Rather than reinforcing a purely retributive vision of the afterlife, these images opened pathways for compassion, merit transfer, and salvation-even for those believed to face the greatest spiritual obstacles, including women and sinners.
Bringing together art history, ritual studies, and the material history of Buddhist objects, The Ill-Fated Afterlife demonstrates how powerful images transformed fear of the afterlife into a dynamic system of care for the living and the dead.

How lens-based art from Southeast Asia offers alternative visions for ecological sustainability
A new paradigm of ecologically minded artistic practices is taking shape in Southeast Asia - one that at once tracks ecological destruction and works specifically to cultivate deeper feelings of empathy toward the environment. Examining a range of photography and video work, The Empathic Lens explores how these lens-based projects respond to increasingly urgent concerns related to climate disaster and capitalist acceleration.
In this analysis of work produced across Cambodia, Vietnam, and Singapore, Brianne Cohen highlights artists for whom rampant urban development, resource extraction, and environmental toxicity are close at hand. As each artist takes their lens to these realities, Cohen shows, they draw on Indigenous knowledge and local traditions that have long recognized the kinship of humans and nonhumans. Engaging often-censored discourses of Indigenous land relations and environmental justice in a region with a long history of colonial and neocolonial development, Cohen traces genealogies of empathy and animism to demonstrate how these works develop sustainable visions for the future coexistence of planetary life.
The first critical account of marginalized artworks that depict the centrality of the more-than-human in Southeast Asian Indigenous worldviews, The Empathic Lens makes a powerful case for the relevance of Southeast Asian lens-based art in contemporary media practice and the art of the Anthropocene.

This book presents a classical liberal perspective on the governance and economic implications of artificial intelligence. As generative AI transforms industries and institutions, this book reframes urgent debates on safety, regulation, labour, and autonomy through the lens of classical liberal economic and political philosophy.
Drawing on Austrian economics, liberal growth theory, and institutional economics, this book argues that classical liberalism and its philosophical framework has not only historically inspired the design of artificial intelligence but also remains a critical guide for its future development and application. From neural networks as emergent orders to AI agents as capital goods, the book explores how liberal principles can guide innovation, mitigate risk, and preserve individual rights. Chapters examine interpretability, the future of work, open-source commons, and the calculation debate, engaging with theorists such as Hayek, Kirzner, Simon, and Schumpeter. The book proposes polycentric governance models for AI safety and rights protection, emphasizing pluralism, contestability, and due process over precautionary control.
This book will be an essential resource for scholars in political economy, law and economics, technology policy, and digital governance. It will also appeal to a broader readership interested in academically rigorous, liberal approaches to the challenges and opportunities of the intelligence explosion.

At an inflection point when artificial intelligence is becoming media infrastructure, this volume offers a system-level analysis of value chains, organizational architectures, and economic rationales. Drawing on economic theory and industry observation, Zvezdan Vukanovic interrogates platform governance, strategic conduct, technological deployment, and regulatory design to explain how AI is reconfiguring production, distribution, monetization, and audience engagement. Across seven sections, he reconstructs adoption trajectories and specifies consequences for cost structures, capital allocation, revenue logics, and scale economies. He charts advertising's shift from efficiency to algorithmic allocation, automated trading, and programmatic markets within a platform-centric, data-intensive ecosystem. Chapters examine automated journalism, neural dubbing, streaming optimization, OTT personalization, and AI-enabled television, alongside their ethical and regulatory dilemmas. The book argues that AI intensifies recentralization and reintermediation through closed platforms, enabling conglomerates to exploit data and compute advantages, manage antitrust constraints, and govern fragmentation. It closes with one hundred questions for researchers to explore.

This book addresses contemporary global crises, ranging from pandemics and armed conflicts to economic instability and political corruption, through the lens of "social fairness". Social fairness refers to the principle that all individuals across the globe and locally should be treated equitably, with access to opportunities, resources, and rights regardless of their background, identity, or circumstances. It encompasses concepts like justice, equality, and inclusivity, ensuring that societal systems do not favor one group over another but instead promote societal wellbeing for all. Drawing on multidisciplinary perspectives based on years of international research collaboration by the "New Frontiers of Studies on Fair Society" research network, the book explores how principles of justice and wellbeing can guide responses to these complex global challenges. This volume therefore takes a global approach to advance the development of multidimensional ideals of wellbeing and fairness and proposes a new public philosophy of prosperity and justice.

This book examines how visually impaired social media content creators navigate their evolving digital identities through the lens of dramaturgical theory, as they move through different stages of sight loss. Drawing on the work of Erving Goffman and other sociological theorists, it explores performance, impression management, and identity construction in online spaces, shedding light on the evolving concepts of public and private self throughout the sight loss journey.
Structured around a newly developed five-stage framework (Diagnosis, Denial, Tipping Point, Coming Out, and The New Normal), chapters blend theoretical insights with real-life case studies and autoethnography to offer insights into identity renegotiation, visibility, and digital self-presentation in the digital age. Bridging academic research with practical guidance, this book brings together interviews with leading influencers, analysis of social media content, and findings from sociology, social psychology, and digital culture research. It is an essential read for scholars and students in disability and blind studies, media studies, social and digital marketing, cultural studies, as well as content creators, counselors, and disability advocates.

Effective oral academic communication is central to multilingual students' engagement as learners and their success in academic and professional domains. This Brief Instructional Guide provides readers with an established set of principles and a pedagogical toolkit for teaching oral academic communication to multilingual international students with a specific focus on genre-based instruction and multimodality. It covers standard oral genres such as presentations and class discussions, as well as a wide variety of communicative genres that enable students to gain rhetorical awareness and communicative competence.
This book introduces a model course design and its guiding principles, then explicitly describes a variety of oral communication assignments that promote engaged learning, including steps in the instructional sequence, tips for teaching, and sample guidance to be shared with students. It emphasizes the importance of leveraging students' cultural and linguistic strengths and global experiences to promote their agency as learners. The principles and practices described in this book are grounded in an English for Academic Purposes (EAP) context, but are easily adaptable to other instructional settings and teaching modalities. Implementing a genre-based and multimodal approach helps build students' rhetorical awareness, increases their communicative capacity, and enables them to participate actively in their academic discourse communities.

This book attempts to understand the impact of context collapse on the process of interpersonal interaction by applying an interdisciplinary and interactive perspective. This book systematically explains the impact of context collapse on social behavior by cognitive communication mechanism. Social science and computer system research is the general scope. Social media technology mixes originally heterogeneous audiences into the same context. As a result, people cannot manage multiple identities for online interactions using traditional offline conversation methods. The lack of boundaries in social media platforms in terms of space, time, and social psychology makes it difficult for people to maintain different social environments simultaneously online. Scholars use the concept of "context collapse" to describe how people, information, and norms permeate from one context to another in social media. Context collapse has both advantages and disadvantages and may bring potential positive or negative consequences.

This book offers a pioneering investigation into how multimodal speech acts, particularly compliments, are perceived, interpreted, and evaluated across cultural and technological contexts. Introducing the Multimodal Compliment Perception Model, it offers a fresh framework for understanding evaluative practices in everyday interaction.
Drawing on pragmatics and (im)politeness research, it examines how factors like culture, age, gender, and personality shape compliment perception, and how different modalities-text, emoji, audio, video, gesture-impact evaluations in digital and face-to-face settings. Using mixed methods and data from over 400 participants across Chinese, Swiss German, and English-speaking backgrounds, the study develops three innovative tools to measure perceptions of sincerity, politeness, and emotional authenticity. The book contributes to multimodal pragmatics by extending facework and relational work into dynamic, culturally sensitive environments. It offers practical tools for researchers in speech act theory, intercultural pragmatics, and digital sociolinguistics.
Aimed at scholars in pragmatics, especially (im)politeness, speech act theory, and multimodal interaction, this book offers both theoretical insights and practical tools for analyzing digital and embodied communication. It's also a valuable resource for researchers in intercultural pragmatics, discourse analysis, gesture studies, multimodal analysis, and digital sociolinguistics.

This book provides a thorough analysis of the notion of social wrong and the idea of social pathology. It addresses questions such as: What does it mean for something to be socially wrong? Why do social philosophers keep "diagnosing" wrongs as "social pathologies"? And is something a pathology because it is wrong, or is it rather a wrong because it is pathological? By constructing an analytical framework of social wrongs and developing the idea of wrongness-with, the book seeks to support critical social thought. While taking societal and structural injustices seriously as paradigm cases of social wrongs, it also offers a comprehensive elaboration of social pathologies as social wrongs. It provides a map of four conceptions of social pathology and contends that only one of them, organicism, must be completely rejected, while the other views may contribute to a critical understanding of social reality. It further elaborates a "natural-historical" view according to which social pathologies as well as their diagnosis and cure are part and parcel of social life. It tests the usefulness of this conception by examining diagnoses of contemporary capitalism in terms of metabolic rift, economic compulsion, and capitalist cannibalization. These diagnoses exemplify three types of pathologies of social life: pathologies of reproduction, pathologies of transformation, and pathologies of mediating the reproductive and transformative pressures of social life.

In recent years, the term "mission-driven" has become so ubiquitous, it is difficult to determine what organizations are not mission-driven. Its ubiquitousness signals something important, however: that we expect organizations to be moral actors that hold beliefs.
In this book, Sorcha A. Brophy describes organizational politics that occur around the creation of policies on hot button topics like gay marriage, racial diversity, and abortion, arguing that regardless of whether or not members of organizations abide by ethics standards, the creation of these standards matters a great deal. Rather than serving primarily as a resource for guiding daily practice, organizational ethics standards are chiefly important because their creation (or adjustment) provides opportunities for organization members to engage with an imagined moral infrastructure. By creating and repairing ethics standards, members are able to understand their actions as guided by a systematic design and undergirded by stable principles.
In practice, these moral infrastructures are not actually comprehensively designed, or truly stable. Consequently, there is ongoing work that organizations must engage in to repair perceived inconsistencies in the moral infrastructure. Brophy shines a light on this backstage work done by "custodians" at the center of organizations to maintain, and repair underlying moral infrastructures.

A compelling call to transform isolation into solidarity and turn shared action into lasting change
Liberation Is Other People offers a bold and timely exploration of how we confront the immense, interconnected challenges of our time. It begins with the truth that many of the crises we face - climate collapse, war, systemic inequality - are human-made and therefore humanly transformable. Yet such "wicked problems" cannot be solved by individuals alone. Every attempt to repair exposes how deeply our lives are entangled across histories of power, privilege, and vulnerability.
Rejecting the idea that personal virtue or guilt can solve the world's problems, Alexis Shotwell offers a philosophy and practice of collective freedom through collective struggle. Drawing on thinkers such as Angela Davis and Ursula K. Le Guin, she argues that freedom is not the power to act alone but the capacity to shape the world with others. Through sustained engagement with climate politics, white settler responsibility, and the reimagining of sexuality and gender, Liberation Is Other People shows how embracing complicity and acknowledging that none of us stand outside the systems we wish to change can open new possibilities for solidarity and transformation.
Rather than a call to purity or perfection, Liberation Is Other People is a vision of politics as a shared, necessarily imperfect process of creation. Shotwell builds a compelling case that solidarity can be a source of joy, inspiration, and political power. In an age of division and isolation, Shotwell insists that our greatest possibility lies not in fixing the world by our individual selves but in remaking it-together.

This book approaches non-monogamy and mononormativity with a cultural studies sensibility. Drawing on interviews with people in non-monogamous relationships as well as media and political discourse, legal case studies, blogs and self-help texts, it explores how intimate cultures emerge within specific contexts. The way mononormativity appears in contemporary Australian intimate culture is used as an occasion to explore how intimate practices are situated: local institutions, discourses and cultural dynamics shape the way people think about, experience and practice intimate relationships.

A critical examination of the digital imagery and visualization tools that mediate urban life
Animated Urbanism explores the ways urban life is increasingly mediated by digital visualization tools, from elaborate marketing productions to specialized techniques of urban planning that rely on the collection of large datasets. By developing a critical vocabulary for these forms of digital imagery, Gillian Rose investigates the implications of using digital technology to manage the spatial and temporal organization of life in cities.
Pushing back against the so-called smartness mandate, which sees urban existence and its infrastructure as necessarily governed by big data, automation, and artificial intelligence, Animated Urbanism is a nuanced examination of the various types of media structuring urban life and their propensity to replicate highly gendered and racialized forms of human embodiment. From smartphone apps to special effects in movies to sophisticated "fly-through" videos of cities created by urban developers, Rose analyzes the corporate imaginaries that are being created, building on the influential theories of Donna Haraway, among others, concerning the interrelation of technology, power, and human life.
While recent digital analysis often focuses on the political economy of tech platforms or the efficacy of data in smart cities, Rose emphasizes the role of human subjectivity in the shifting configurations of these new urban landscapes. With an incisive, feminist approach to the imagery enabled by software and handheld devices, Animated Urbanism invites us to question how human life emerges from these complex entanglements of technology and visual culture.

This essential work collects Susan Taubes's philosophical and critical writings, establishing her as one of the most remarkable philosophical minds of the 20th century. At the centerpiece of the volume is Susan Taubes's dissertation on Simone Weil, "The Absent God", and also included are her previously published essays and reviews on Weil, Heidegger, Jean Genet and Albert Camus, as well as an unpublished fragment on Franz Kafka. Taken together, these rigorously philosophical works show Taubes to be a thinker preoccupied with seeking out a lexicon - of myth and symbol, image and narrative - by which to articulate the conundrum of how to live and die in a cosmos saturated with meaning but devoid of divinity. There has been a surge of interest in Taubes following the recent republication of her novels Divorcing and Lament for Julia. With an incisive introduction by Sarah Hammerschlag, this volume provides the necessary supplement to her fictional corpus, tracking Taubes's transformation from philosopher to novelist, while revealing Taubes to be not only an extraordinary literary voice but a profound scholarly one as well.

This book investigates the spatial relations between digital media and society, relying on Marshall McLuhan's probes into the effects of communication technology. It argues that McLuhan's ideas may be relevant to understanding how contemporary space, digital media, and society adapt to one another. This aim is pursued in three steps. First, McLuhan's media theory is discussed with a focus on the effects of media in structuring the conditions of space perception at both the individual and the social levels. The concepts of visual and acoustic space are examined in relation to mechanical and electric media, respectively. Second, McLuhan's lifelong interest in the city as a learning environment is contrasted with his claim that cities are obsolete vis-a-vis the global village of instant electronic communication. The contradiction is more apparent than real, as McLuhan imagined a future for cities as programmed environments for the sensory training of citizens and actively engaged in discussions with urban planners and designers. Third, McLuhan's insights are extended beyond his time to make sense of the current relationship between digital media, space, and urban society. The evolution of cyberspace from a virtual realm to its hybridisation with physical space is traced across both literary and scholarly sources. The effects of a hybrid space concept on urban planning and design approaches in the digital age are explored. McLuhan's legacy, with its humanistic breadth, enables an understanding of the present media ecology that moves beyond the efficiency-oriented paradigm of the smart city discourse. The book bridges technological consciousness and social responsibility in the fields of space theory and spatial planning. It targets an audience that is open to interdisciplinary dialogue between science and the humanities to promote sustainable cities and communities.

Holmes contests prevailing misconceptions associated with deafness and hearing in Western music by turning to the musical experiences of deaf, hard-of-hearing, and hearing disabled musicians in order to impart a multisensory, multimodal conception of music and musicianship. Through a range of examples drawn from music history, popular music, recent film, and popular science, Holmes reveals that "deafness" is mistakenly understood as a state of total silence and heightened tactile sensation, a stigmatizing trope she calls the "figure of deafness."
Holmes explores music-making spanning auditory, visual-spatial, vibrotactile, and non-sonorous modalities, including the creative practice of Christine Sun Kim, all-deaf electronic dance music raves, the musical experiences of hearing aid users, and music and musical instruments devised to mitigate tinnitus and hyperacusis. By examining the cultural production of "natural" hearing in the design, branding, and musical programming of digital hearing aids, Holmes offers a reappraisal of hearing that defies naturalized perceptual processes and auditory thresholds, the idealization of sonic fidelity, and biologically driven conceptions of musicality. Music at the Margins of Sense champions an understanding of musicianship that embraces the lived experience of disability as a vital locus of musical creativity and expertise.

This book is a collection of contributions by researchers working in various fields of humanities and cultural studies with a focus on the most important contemporary terms needed to understand the Korean Wave (Hallyu) and Korean studies. In recent decades, Hallyu has evolved far beyond the export of Korean popular culture or the commercial success of individual media products. It has become a complex, multilayered cultural formation-one that no longer lends itself to simple explanations. As such, Hallyu persistently raises new questions, inviting scholars to rethink existing frameworks and stimulating fresh intellectual engagements around the world. Twenty-nine researchers across a diverse range of subject areas in the Humanities and Social Sciences have contributed their expertise. Their academic work, conducted across Korea, the United States, Italy, India, Malaysia, the Philippines, Bangladesh, and beyond, lends this volume its breadth and depth. The entries assembled here encompass both the core concepts that currently anchor Hallyu scholarship and the emerging keywords that offer promising avenues for future research.

This edited collection aims to identify memories and perceptions of African subjects who lived the process of struggle for independence and the experience of colonial wars, shaping their identity on the negotiation between personal memory and the narrative proposed by official history. It also includes memories of those who have experienced these periods in the colonial metropolis, which allow the contributors to compare the narratives centered on European memories of Africa and what was experienced in the African continent. The book explores how oral culture can become the domestic space of people who had to leave the African continent and had to recreate their identities inside a different society, quite often the colonizers' one, and how their life abroad has been shaped by the recreation of their linguistic social and culture paradigm through the memory of their oral culture.
