Reimagine what it means to be human in the age of AI
Artificial intelligence was created by modeling human cognition. While AI was built to run on slow and deliberate thinking processes, humans maintained dominance in fast, intuitive, emotion-based cognition: until now.
In The AI Instinct: The Future of AI and Human Decision-Making, Rana Gujral introduces the concept of Artificial General Experience (AGE): systems designed not only to solve problems, but to structure and update a continuous stream of experience. The book follows the rise of AI from a background tool to a force that shapes how we think, feel, and experience the world. Drawing on his pioneering work in cognitive AI at Behavioral Signals, Gujral takes readers to new depths in understanding where AI is headed and provides a fresh perspective on what it means to be human in a world where intelligence is no longer uniquely ours.
Readers gain a clear understanding of how cognitive AI operates in the real world: where it delivers value, quietly steers human decisions, and where the hype runs ahead of reality. From there, the book turns to the path toward Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) and AGE, exploring brain-computer interfaces and other emerging technologies that blend human bodies and machine intelligence, and argues that intelligence is shifting from isolated minds and standalone models to shared hybrid systems that shape how we think and live. The book closes by examining futures beyond AGI, where superintelligence appears not as a distant machine overlord but as composite minds that fuse human and AI capacities into new kinds of persons. Drawing on cognitive science, neuroscience, and philosophy, The AI Instinct asks what truly makes us human and how we can hold onto agency at the frontiers of hybrid thinking.
Perfect for technologists, business leaders, young people preparing for the world they are about to inherit, and any curious reader trying to make sense of AI's rapid ascent, The AI Instinct offers a grounded, forward-looking roadmap for navigating a future in which our choices, our institutions, and even our identities are increasingly tied to and impacted by AI.

Based on more than a year of in-depth fieldwork in France, Mental States takes readers to a public mental health clinic charged with providing care despite diminishing resources, a social service office dispensing benefits intended to help chronically ill people recover their autonomy, and a court where judges must decide the delicate balance between rights and control for people subjected to involuntary psychiatric hospitalization. Drawing on these observations, as well as hundreds of interviews with French professionals and decades of archival materials, Barnard demonstrates that these disparate sites are linked by a shared conception of what makes someone a malade-a real mentally ill person. This medical and bureaucratic identity keeps the mad in the grips of a paternalist, protective psychiatric system-in sharp contrast to the United States, where this population careens among jails, shelters, and hospitals.
This book reveals the power of states to create mentally ill populations and shows how these populations can in turn remake states. The way states have crafted madness in the past weighs on the present, explaining why countries can maintain distinct approaches even in an era when psychiatric knowledge and medical treatment are converging across borders.

From a murdered teenager being interviewed as though he were alive, to a widow speaking with a chatbot made through voice cloning the digital relics of her late husband, AI-generated versions of the deceased are becoming uncanny in their humanlike form. Are personal memories, so central to our sense of personality, individuality and agency, already lost to a future in which we feel compelled to embrace the humanlike comfort of bots?
Memorybot is the story of the consequences of generative AI on human memory. It reveals how in regenerating past lives, and through mining and sharing present ones, AI removes the once memorial limits of a living individual. The most traumatic and joyous parts of human existence are perpetually subject to a continuous extraction of memories. Hoskins argues that we are witnessing the emergence of a new societal paradigm, characterised by the increasing dominance of hybrid memory, the erosion of anonymity, and the effective end of human forgetting.
Written by a leading international scholar of memory studies, Memorybot is a haunting read for anyone concerned about the growing influence of AI technologies and services, and for the fields of media, cultural studies, psychology, sociology, history and memory studies.

The internet we could have had was a promise; it could have been a global brain, an end to monopoly capitalism, a liberation of free speech. How did we get from there to here: to surveillance capitalism and data colonialism, facing an extractive AI industry and a fragmented social media landscape powered by misinformation and advertising? Where did it all go wrong? What happened to the promise of the internet and how did it become the disaster we know today?
Part political inquest, part theoretical autopsy, Kelty documents how aspirations of liberation, openness, and participatory democracy opened a door - and through that door walked the Facebook Like Button, Amazon Web Services, Google's Chrome browser and much more. A work of concerted remembering, The Internet We Could Have Had is an attempt to fathom how this past was immensely generative of a future we didn't ask for.

Visual Vestiges explains how information design evolved over the centuries to make practical information clear, credible, and emotionally engaging.
In Visual Vestiges Charles Kostelnick analyzes the role of the past in understanding, studying, deploying, and teaching visual language in business, technical, and professional communication. He explores how information designs-text, pictures, icons, charts, and graphs-evolved to develop their rhetorical power and the many ways in which their vestigial forms permeate contemporary design. To explain these temporal dynamics, he examines the forces that underpin them: cultural shifts in aesthetics, taste, and values; social changes that redefine how we relate to one another rhetorically; and innovations in technology that transform the tools and channels we use to visualize and interpret information. Drawing on rhetorical theory, design studies, art history, and historical and contemporary examples, Kostelnick explores the rhetorical role of time in bridging past and present design forms-by constantly regenerating them through visual conventions, by heightening pathos appeals through sentiment and nostalgia, and by bolstering ethos, amplifying epideictic displays, and narrating stories with text, pictures, and charts.

This book provides a unique look into the civil spaces of post-transformation societies in Central and Eastern Europe. It investigates the dynamics of civil spheres in a region characterized by overcoming dictatorship and experiencing transitions and tremendous social change. Empirically, the book provides ten case studies that analyze the often ambivalent processes of polarization and democratic backsliding, memory culture and the role of emotions, as well as new forms of democratic resilience that have emerged in the region. The book utilizes civil sphere theory and introduces the concept of post-transformation as the central parameter of complex social and political developments in Central and Eastern Europe. In combining these theories, the book illuminates the tensions between institutionalization and informality, trust, mistrust, and the evolution of a "we-ness" and abstract solidarity, and thereby, explores how democratic "software" is programmed against the backdrop of different socialist and post-socialist legacies.

Examines various case studies to provide a multifaceted understanding of Taiwan's literary and cultural leftism, emphasizing its transnational, diverse, and highly malleable nature.
An Unlikely Trajectory addresses a significant gap by foregrounding the often repressed or understudied literary and cultural leftist practices in Taiwan. Its twelve chapters explore how Taiwanese authors, directors, and intellectuals strategically navigated the complexities of colonial Japanese rule and authoritarian nationalist governance to articulate visions of a more just and oppression-free future for Taiwan. Taiwan's leftist practices matter because they offer essential insights into the island's social fabric and the intricate processes of identity formation as well as the broader international and geopolitical dynamics shaped by ongoing ideological conflicts. Through detailed case studies, this volume demonstrates how these leftist practices were influenced by diverse multicultural sources and have maintained their relevance and adaptability amid shifting sociopolitical landscapes. Furthermore, it explores how leftist ideologies intersect with other critical issues, including gender, class, and ethnicity.

Contrary to popular belief, the internet is not making us stupid or lazy or subjecting us to algorithmic domination. Devin Proctor contends that it is instead changing the way we perceive our bodies, our social worlds, and our identities along a spectrum of virtuality.
Proctor conceptualizes the internet as a social space, arguing for a return to spatial understandings of the digital. The reality of this space, he posits, is co-produced through our interaction with human and non-human agents - bots, AI programs, and algorithms - that exist alongside us in a field of internet presence.
From video calls to anonymous chat forums, Proctor traces progressive levels of virtual emplacement to interrogate the embodied forms we take across digital contexts and the ways in which these forms influence communication and identity. He draws on years of digital ethnographic fieldwork among the Otherkin community - a group of people who largely socialize online and internally identify as non-human - to complicate conventional notions about our relationships with the virtual, our understandings of the Self, and what it means to be human.

This book explores how people imagine, create, and sustain societal futures through the interplay of imagination, change, and preservation. Drawing on possibility studies and creativity research, it uses the concept of creative preservation as a unifying framework for understanding how communities creatively renew and take care of what already exists rather than only pursuing radical novelty.
Emerging from discussions held at the 4th International Conference of Possibility Studies, the volume begins at the level of global social and ecological systems, examining the extent to which social innovation can function as a force of preservation and regeneration. It then turns to intergenerational creative continuity and ageing to reveal novelty in what societies neglect in old age, before reflecting on methodological considerations from new materialism for addressing work on societal futures. The book then critically discusses the past and present disruptions in academia and proposes perspectives to care for and preserve the possibility for research to contribute meaningfully to societal change. It concludes by exploring the transformative potential of wonder and astonishment in education as a practice of caring and an attitude of exploring individual and collective possibilities.
A thought-provoking response to the growing concerns around how social scientists can provide frameworks to adjust to and contribute to a more caring and sustainable society, this book is for researchers and students in sociology and social theory, education and pedagogy, philosophy and critical theory, cultural and performance studies, creativity studies, sustainability studies, STS, and futures and possibility studies.

This book develops a sociological framework for understanding how societies produce and transform meaning. Rather than treating meaning as a fixed property of individuals or texts, it introduces relational meaning-making, in which meanings stabilise in particular situations while remaining open to alternatives. Revisiting Max Weber's concept of Sinn and Alfred Schutz's phenomenology, the book rethinks identity, agency and social structures. Drawing on Weber, Mead and Parsons, it explores why sociological theory has struggled to grasp the dynamics of meaning, and examines the contemporary crisis of meaning, self-referential individuals, and the implications of digital communication and generative AI. This book argues that relational meaning-making is a fundamental process through which society interprets and reshapes itself.

In Reframing the Long 1960s Estella Tincknell explores the way British crime films and television series made during or about that extended decade have been marked by ongoing tensions between nostalgic myths of masculinity, power and whiteness and attempts to challenge or transform those dominant narratives.
Tincknell blends cultural analysis and original research with close reading to examine a wide variety of crime subgenres from police procedurals and heist films to gangster narratives and thrillers, comparing the approaches of texts such as Z-Cars (1962-1978), Robbery (1967), Get Carter (1971) and The Sweeney (1975-1978) with those of period dramas aimed at twenty-first century audiences, including The Great Train Robbery (2013), Legend (2015), The Trial of Christine Keeler (2019) and Endeavour (2012-2023). Tincknell identifies the important intersections between text, genre, nostalgia and popular memory as she traces how persistent myths about crime and criminality-and about "the long 1960s" as a defining period for British cultural identity-have been represented and recirculated.

This edited collection examines the expression of posthumanist themes across diverse media, emphasizing the interconnections of technology, identity, and existence. As technological breakthroughs increasingly obscure the distinctions between the organic and inorganic, as well as the human and non-human, media narratives function as essential arenas for analysing these shifting dynamics.
The book examines the representation of posthuman identities in film, television, and literature, prompting philosophical inquiries regarding autonomy, subjectivity, and agency, and examines how posthumanism transforms conventional humanist notions of the self and society, especially by investigating the interdependent link between humans and technology.

Political Communications is a now established series of eleven books, the first of which appeared in the aftermath of the watershed General Election of 1979. Cumulatively the series offers unique insights from both practitioner and academic perspectives with commentaries from those responsible for organizing, reporting, and analyzing every campaign held during the last 45 years. The primary focus of the books is to understand the interplay between the rival parties, various media and the voting public, and the similarities and differences between this and previous elections.
This book resembles previous volumes in terms of its structure. The content will, however, differ not least because this election ended in the return of a new government. Political Communication in Britain (2024) will provide commentaries from party insiders about a campaign whose outcome was seemingly not in doubt, but which nonetheless delivered some surprising results due to the idiosyncrasies of the UK electoral system. The book will examine the workings and efforts of various rival campaign, both online and off, in the context of a hastily called election held in July for the first time since 1945. The reporting of events and role of journalism in seeking to hold the rival politicians will be discussed including by those responsible for delivering some of the most popular news coverage. A range of polling experts will examine how voters experienced the campaign through use of quantitative and qualitative based forms of analysis to provide insights into why and how so many different parties were able to gain the necessary support to secure representation in the House of Commons. Aside from Labour, the other beneficiaries from this campaign were the Liberal Democrats, Reform UK, the Greens, and a range of independents: the reasons for their successes will be complemented by explorations of why the Conservatives and Scottish Nationalists succumbed to such heavy defeats.

This Palgrave Pivot presents a new account of the social and epistemic processes that led to the creation of The Authoritarian Personality (TAP), a classic of political psychology published in 1950, which has been cited frequently in recent literature on authoritarian political parties and movements. Studies of the intellectual migration of European scholars and scientists to the United States have recognized TAP as one of the most successful results of the multiple efforts by emigres and their American colleagues to reflect on the wider implications of the Nazi takeover of power, as well as the issue of whether and why elements of Nazi racism and antisemitism existed in America. However, the work is generally treated as part of the history of the Frankfurt School, and discussion has centered on the contribution of Theodor W. Adorno, whose chapters encompass less than one-fourth of the volume. This narrow perspective largely ignores the intensive collaboration between the Institute of Social Research in New York and the Public Opinion Study Group in Berkeley, California, and also among the four authors themselves. This is particularly true for the central contribution of the emigre Austrian psychologist Else Frenkel-Brunswik to TAP, which had little to do with the approach of the Frankfurt School. This book therefore investigates in detail the social circumstances that led to the creation of TAP, and pays equal attention to the work of all of TAP's authors, including the two Americans who wrote more than half the volume. It also considers whether and how the authors' ideas and methods interlinked in the volume itself, as well as how the approach of TAP relates to other research on antisemitism and ethnic prejudice in the USA during the 1940s.

Anna D. Jaroszynska-Kirchmann explores the surprising history of pierogi, tracing how Polish cuisine evolved in the multiethnic landscape of the United States. When Polish immigrants crossed the ocean, they brought with them their traditional cuisine, which came to signify enduring attachment to homeland, family, religion, and culture. In time, they as well as new generations and new immigrant waves gradually transformed Polish American culinary culture, reflecting food trends and changes in the United States, Poland, and the world.
Pierogi takes readers into the kitchens where Polish American families, friends, and community organizations carry on the custom of cooking and eating together. Jaroszynska-Kirchmann highlights small- and large-scale pierogi producers who adapted traditional dishes for the US market and food celebrities who mainstreamed them, and she traces the symbolic representation of pierogi in popular culture. She also shares personal stories, from her family's resourcefulness in communist-era Poland facing near-constant food shortages to her experiences as an immigrant to the United States in the 1980s. Drawing on sources from historical and recent cookbooks to interviews with Polish American entrepreneurs and community members, this book offers new insights for anyone interested in East Central European and American foodways.

This book explores the history of Los Angeles cinema and the complex relationship that American film has had with its host city throughout history.
It is impossible to talk about the City of Angels without talking about its movie business. The history of American cinema is so intertwined with Los Angeles that the term "Hollywood" is used interchangeably with "American film" worldwide. From the early 20th-century migration of film pioneers from the East Coast to the emergence of local subcultures and global genres, John Trafton traces how the city has been imagined by insiders and outsiders alike.
Key case studies include the L.A. Rebellion School, disaster cinema, and the intersections of independent cinema with the music scene and VHS culture. The book culminates in an exploration of Los Angeles neorealist cinema - a form that centers marginalized voices and challenges the myth of Hollywood glamour.
