Toxic Masculinity brings together scholars across disciplines to explore the ways in which toxic masculinity is constructed, configured and represented online. What is "toxic masculinity"? Examining what it means in the media and public discourse, the contributors have explored a constellation of behaviours, cultures and practices that have been labelled as (or associated with) toxic masculinity including those of politicians, extremists, incels, as well as individual "ordinary" men and their everyday behaviours. Topics covered in the collection include incels and Men Going Their Own Way (MGTOW), bro culture, sexual violence, internalised homophobia, transphobia, white masculinity and political discourse.Toxic Masculinity is intended for a broad spectrum of gender, media, cultural and masculinity studies professionals, academics, researchers and students. Every place has its quirky attributes, cultural reputation, and distinctive flair. But when we travel across America, do we also experience distinct gender norms and expectations? In his groundbreaking Gendered Places, William Scarborough examines metropolitan commuting zones to see how each region's local culture reflects gender roles and gender equity. He uses surveys and social media data to measure multiple dimensions of gender norms, including expectations toward women in leadership, attitudes toward working mothers, as well as the division of household labor.Gendered Places reveals that different locations, even within the same region of the country, such as Milwaukee and Madison Wisconsin, have distinct gender norms and highly influential cultural environments. Scarboroughshows how these local norms shape the attitudes and behaviors of residents with implications on patterns of inequality such as the gender wage gap. His findings offer valuable insight for community leaders and organizers making efforts to promote equality in their region. Scarboroughrecognizes local culture as not value-neutral, but highly crucial to the gender structure that perpetuates, or challenges, gender inequality. Gendered Places questions how these gender norms are sustained and their social consequences.

Lasting from 1979 to 2015, China's One Child Policy is often remembered as one of the most ambitious social engineering projects to date and considered emblematic of global efforts to regulate population growth during the twentieth century. Drawing on a rich combination of archival research and oral history, Sarah Mellors Rodriguez analyses how ordinary people, particularly women, navigated China's shifting fertility policies before and during the One Child Policy era. She examines the implementation and reception of these policies and reveals that they were often contradictory and unevenly enforced, as men and women challenged, reworked, and co-opted state policies to suit their own needs. By situating the One Child Policy within the longer history of birth control and abortion in China, Reproductive Realities in Modern China exposes important historical continuities, such as the enduring reliance on abortion as contraception and the precariousness of state control over reproduction.

Sell-Outs or Warriors for Change?: A Comparative Look at Conservative Women in Politics in Democracies. 138 pp. 2022:11 (Routledge, UK) <683-639>
ISBN 978-1-03-234657-1 hard ¥35,612.- (税込) GB£ 125.00 *
This book addresses the central question of how right-wing women navigate the cross-pressures between gender identity and political ideology. The hope has always been that more women in politics would lead to greater inclusion of women's voices and interests in decision-making and policy. Yet this is not always the case; some prominent conservative women such as Margaret Thatcher have rejected the feminist label while others such as Angela Merkel have reluctantly accepted it. Republican women in the U.S. Congress have embraced social and economic policies contrary to what many consider to be women's issues while EU Commission president Ursula von der Leyen is a staunch supporter of feminist ideas. Other conservative women, such as Marine LePen in France strategically use feminist ideas to justify their conservative stances on immigration. This brings up an interesting yet understudied question: under what circumstances do conservative women become feminist allies and when do they toe the party line? It is this tension between women's political representation and conservatism that this edited volume explores. The chapters in this book, except for Chapter 3, were originally published as a special issue of Journal of Women, Politics & Policy.

This book, based on extensive original research, examines the practice by women in a university sport setting of kendo, the Japanese martial art which, using bamboo swords as well as protective armour, and descended from traditional swordsmanship, instils in its practitioners, besides physical skills, societal values of etiquette and resilience as well connecting them to a "traditional" outlook, which includes a gendered cultural identity. The book therefore illustrates an unexplored example of identity construction in Japan, one which legitimises women's sport experiences within a male-centric physical culture, unpacks the notion of "tradition" in kendo and unravels its stultifying control over women's kendo participation, and discusses the androgenicity of women's participation to highlight its subversive potential to develop women as leaders in sport, politics, and other fields which continue to be very male dominated in Japan.

To what extent is the legal subject gendered? Using illustrative examples from a range of jurisdictions and thematically organised chapters, this volume offers a comprehensive consideration of this question. With a systematic, accessible approach, it argues that law and gender work to co-produce the legal subject. Cumulatively, the volume's chapters provide a systematic evaluation of the key facets of the legal subject: the corporeal, the functional and the communal. Exploring aspects of the legal subject from the ways in which it is sexed and sexualised to its national and familial dimensions, this volume develops a complete account of the various processes through which legal orders produce gendered subjects. Across its chapters, each theoretically ambitious in its own right, this volume outlines how the law not only acts on the social world, but genders it.

This book uses a crime science approach to explore the ways in which child sexual abuse material (CSAM) can be tackled. It describes the CSAM ecosystem, focusing on the ways in which it is produced, distributed and consumed and explores different interventions that can be used to tackle each issue. Eliminating Online Child Sexual Abuse Material provides a methodical approach to unpacking and understanding this growing problem, identifies approaches that have been shown to work and offers alternatives that might be tried. This analysis is set within a crime sciences context that draws on rational choice, routine activities, situation crime prevention and environmental criminology to better understand the nature of the problem and the potential ways in which it may be solved. This book is intended for policy-makers and practitioners working in child protection, online harms and related areas and for students studying sexual violence or internet-related crime. The book will also be of interest to crime scientists as it provides another example of how the approach can be used to understand and reduce crime.

Practising Feminism for Social Welfare: A Global Perspective. 224 pp. 2022:12 (Routledge, UK) <683-277>

ISBN 978-1-138-65068-8 paper ¥9,968.- (税込) GB£ 34.99 *
There has been an explosion of interest in feminism in recent years. This book argues it is still necessary and has a vital role. Feminism's core objectives - to address the persistent issue of women's inequality and ongoing sexism, and to fight against women's oppression and improve women's lives - remain of central value across the world. As a result, how feminism contributes to and improves social welfare is overdue for re-examination.This text explores what feminism means in theory, policy and practice as it is conceptualised and engaged within different social welfare contexts today. Beginning with an overview of feminist scholarship in the 21st century, it mainly comprises six substantive chapters that examine feminism from within a specific policy or practice setting. The topics discussed include globalisation and social justice, motherhood and reproductive rights, domestic violence, women's experiences in criminal justice settings and working with older people. Practising Feminism for Social Welfare concludes with a framework for feminist policy and practice in the era of the fourth wave, whilst acknowledging that there can be no single or hegemonic feminism across all sites of social and political processes and in all social welfare settings. Designed as an introduction to feminist practice for social policy and social work audiences, this volume will also speak to a range of academic disciplines, including sociology, criminology, politics, women's studies, and gender and feminist studies.

On the Significance of Religion in Violence Against Women and Girls. (Religion Matters) 168 pp. 2022:11 (Routledge, UK) <683-129>

In this ground-breaking volume, the authors explore two sides of religion: the ways in which it contributes to violence against women and girls (VAWG) and the ways it counters it. Recognising the very real impact of religion on the lives of women and girls, it prioritises experiences and learnings from empirical research and of practitioners, and their activities at grassroots-level, to better understand the nature and root causes of VAWG. Drawing on research done in Christian and Muslim communities in various fragile settings with high religiosity, this book avoids simplistically assigning blame to any one religion, instead engaging with the commonalities of how religion and religious actors influence norms and behaviours that impact VAWG. If the sustainable development goal of ending all forms of VAWG is to be achieved, how should actors in the international development sector engage with religion and religious actors? This book unpacks the nature of religion and religious actors in relation to VAWG, with the aim of giving greater clarity on how to (and how not to) engage with this crucial issue.Combining cutting-edge research with case studies and pragmatic recommendations for academics, policymakers and practitioners, this concise and easily accessible volume helps instigate discussion and engagement with the incredibly important relationships between religion and VAWG.The Open Access version of this book, available at www.taylorfrancis.com, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives 4.0 license.

Multilingualism and Gendered Immigrant Identity: Perspectives from Catalonia. (Multilingual Matters) 176 pp. 2022:10 (Multilingual Matters, UK) <683-1012>

This book examines the intersectionality of gendered, religious identity among Muslim women in Catalonia, and illustrates how this identity is brokered through language use in a multilingual and diasporic context. Drawing on a mixed methods study of 1st and 2nd generation immigrant women, this book also examines how acculturation is a transgenerational process reflected in linguistic behavior. Through the use of questionnaire and interview data, the author constructs a story about informants' experiences navigating life vis-a-vis language use; specifically through the use of Spanish, Catalan and native/heritage languages. This book offers a unique lens through which we can further our understanding of the role of language in the acculturation process in Catalonia. It adds to the ongoing discussion about language and migration in Catalonia and provides a valuable contribution to debates about immigrant women's language learning and use.

Muslim Women in Contemporary North America is a provocative study of how strongly held and divergent opinions, values, and beliefs, as well as misconceptions, overgeneralizations, and political agendas pertaining to Muslim women in the region, enter the public frame of reference.Interrogating contested topics in a series of case studies from both Canada and the United States, this book probes below the surface in pursuit of deeper understanding and more productive dialogue. Chapters analyze controversies over "clash" literature, dissident reformists, female religious leadership, veils, and the nature of emancipation in a compelling examination of the ways in which "Muslim," "American," and "Canadian" identities and values are being defined, differentiated, and projected. By pinpointing both sources of dissonance and unexpected patterns of resonance among complex, composite, and at times overlapping identity constellations, this book uncovers the impact of controversies on broader cultural negotiations in the United States and Canada.Transforming controversy and cliche into genuine conversation, Muslim Women in Contemporary North America is an invaluable resource for scholars and students in the fields of Islamic and Muslim Studies, Gender Studies, International Relations, Political Science, and Sociology.

In this accessible and yet challenging work, Shirley Anne Tate engages with race and gender intersectionality, connecting through to affect theory, to develop a Black decolonial feminist analysis of global anti-Blackness. Through the focus on skin, Tate provides a groundwork of historical context and theoretical framing to engage more contemporary examples of racist constructions of Blackness and Black bodies. Examining the history of intersectionality including its present 'post-intersectionality', the book continues intersectionality's racialized gender critique by developing a Black decolonial feminist approach to cultural readings of Black skin's consumption, racism within 'body beauty institutions' (e.g. modelling, advertising, beauty pageants) and cultural representations, as well as the affects which keep anti-Blackness in play. This book is suitable for undergraduate and postgraduate students in gender studies, sociology and media studies.

LGBTQ Leadership in Higher Education. 200 pp. 2022:9 (Johns Hopkins U. Pr., US) <683-1048>
ISBN 978-1-4214-4407-9 hard ¥6,457.- (税込) US$ 29.95 *
Why does queer leadership matter? In this book, the first of its kind, 15 LGBTQ presidents and chancellors in higher education provide insight into their experiences and highlight the importance of queer leadership for the academy and the world.Prior to this century, there were few known gay or lesbian presidents in North American higher education. Mary Emma Wooley, president of Mount Holyoke College from 1901 to 1937, is documented because her life on campus with her partner, Jeanette Marks, is described in their love letters, which have been recently curated. Jacquelyn A. Mattfeld, president of Barnard College from 1976 to 1980, rarely receives recognition for braving sexism, heterosexism, and homophobia during her presidency. Theodora J. Kalikow, president of University of Maine Farmington from 1994 to 2012, bridges the few early examples to the era of contributors to this volume. In LGBTQ Leadership in Higher Education, Raymond Crossman brings together 15 currently serving or retired LGBTQ presidents and chancellors in higher education to explain why, to whom, and how LGBTQ leadership matters. Writing from the perspective of their lived and specific experiences as LGBTQ presidents, these current and former leaders consider whether there is something distinctive about LGBTQ leadership. They also attempt to draw insights and principles from their personal stories. In addition, the book considers a profound question: Is being queer a superpower for these leaders, something they manage as part of their intersectional identities, or is it just another attribute of accomplished leaders? In essays ranging across 12 topics, including intersectionality, mentorship, feminism, self-care, coming out, heteronormativity, and partners and spouses, the authors address why LGBTQ leadership matters at this moment, and more broadly, why diversity, inclusion, and equity in leadership are important to meet today's challenges for higher education and human rights. The first book on this topic, LGBTQ Leadership in Higher Education simultaneously archives a moment that is the forerunner to new, enormous, and necessary evolutions in the practice of leadership.Contributors: Terry L. Karim, Wazir Jahan,
Being A Woman: A Personal Journey To Feminism. 250 pp. 2022:11 (World Scientific, SI) <683-1051>
ISBN 978-981-12-6200-5 hard ¥12,504.- (税込) US$ 58.00
Wazir Jahan engages the reader in absorbing stories of her child-hood to retirement against a backdrop of events in Malaysia; cultural, academic and political, which elucidates the complexities of being a Muslim feminist, in a divisive Asian society. Her narrative demonstrates that each woman can successfully negotiate the boundaries between patriarchy, family and modernity if they believe that being a woman is synonymous to being a feminist - that every institution which obstructs women's path to freedom can be challenged through recognising the power of individualism. Jahan believes that once a woman understands what can work well for her, within the limitations of her own achievements and resources, she should be able to rise above these intimidations of life and actively engage in pursuing her dreams. For Jahan, femininity and feminism are complementary forms of activism which enabled her to gain acceptance and legitimacy for her work with disadvantaged and minority women. Her frank and refreshing confessions of success and failures in her work on women and gender demonstrates confidence, individuality and charisma - a catharsis in the journey to discovering the power of womanhood.

This ground-breaking book explores contemporary forms of BDSM where women dominate in relationships and professions, opening new paths for psychological research in commercial and non-commercial BDSM.Based on a unique combination of qualitative investigation and academic research, it examines how BDSM has often crystalized conflicts in contemporary feminist debates, where sexually dominant women are pictured either as victims or as agents of resistance to the patriarchy. Nathalie Lugand argues that female domination in heterosexual BDSM is above all situated in a continuum structured by the values of care and by the circulation of money. Through a novel psychodynamic approach, Lugand demystifies BDSM relationships where women dominate, considering the impact of social relations of work in the construction of sexual identity and analyzing the difficulties that they cause in the erotic economy. The book affirms that to better understand the pleasure taken in female domination practices and the difficulties for women to impose themselves as dominatrixes, it is necessary to shift the focus away from transgressive aspects and look towards the workplace and the organisation of work in women's sexuality.Using field immersion to comprehensively investigate the blurred boundaries between life and work in the BDSM community, A Psychodynamic Approach to Female Domination in BDSM Relationships provides the opportunity for a new interpretation of sexuality, overturning the existing theoretical frameworks used in clinical psychology and psychoanalysis. This book is essential reading for researchers and academics in psychology, gender studies, political and social sciences, and human sexuality, as well as activists defending the human rights of sex workers around the world.

Ong, Tricia,
A Feminist Approach to Sensitive Research: Designing the Clay Embodiment Research Method. (Focus on Global Gender and Sexuality) 144 pp. 2022:10 (Routledge, UK) <683-1063>
ISBN 978-1-03-225724-2 hard ¥13,102.- (税込) GB£ 45.99 *
This book explores the development and implementation of the Clay Embodiment Research Method (CERM) with one of the most stigmatized, oppressed, and marginalized groups of women in Nepal: sex-trafficked women. It argues for the use of a feminist approach to such research given the prevailing patriarchal norms, cultural sensitivity of reproductive health, stigmatization of sex trafficking, and low literacy of the women involved. Beginning with an exploration of the author's relationship with Nepal and the women who guide the study, and the realization that a more accessible research approach was needed than the techniques otherwise commonly used, it discusses the use of clay and photography as ideal entry points to engaging with the women in the research and creating this ethical methodology for self-empowerment. Not only does the volume highlight extraordinary insights offered by the women involved in this study through the application of CERM, but also the recognition that its use requires expertise that can deal with the potential elicitation of trauma. The book makes the case for further study on improving the method's use in research, education, and therapy involving low-literate, stigmatized, oppressed, and marginalized populations, particularly where cultural sensitivity is an important consideration.A Feminist Approach to Sensitive Research is suitable for students, scholars, and researchers in Gender Studies, Sociology, Health Studies, Anthropology, and Asian Studies.

Trott, Verity,
Feminist Activism and Platform Politics. 176 pp. 2022:12 (Routledge, UK) <683-1070>
ISBN 978-1-03-235773-7 hard ¥35,612.- (税込) GB£ 125.00 *
Trott interrogates how feminist activists navigate complex technological ecosystems to build awareness of misogyny, violence against women, and oppressive experiences women face both online and offline while cultivating transnational feminist networks and carving out spaces upon which to build and elevate women's voices. This book is guided by a few key questions: how is feminist activism transforming and being mutually shaped by a dynamic and volatile platform ecosystem? How are activists attempting to negotiate this terrain? And, how are (anti)feminist politics contested within the platform society? These questions are addressed through analysis of three key case studies: the international feminist organisation Hollaback!; the #EndViolenceAgainstWomen campaign; and the global #TakeDownJulienBlanc movement. Building on the intersecting fields of feminist media studies, platform and internet research, and political communication, this book addresses cultural and social questions about how digital platforms shape the values of our communities and how stakeholders negotiate and engage in civic practices. This timely and important work interweaves activist discourses, women's voices and scholarly literature together to provide insight into the realities of operating within a platform society. It will be of interest to students and scholars of journalism, gender studies, media and communication studies, culture studies, and sociology.

First Among Men: George Washington and the Myth of American Masculinity. 416 pp. 2022:12 (Johns Hopkins U. Pr., US) <683-1071>
ISBN 978-1-4214-4447-5 hard ¥6,899.- (税込) US$ 32.00 *
Dispelling common myths about the first US president and revealing the real George Washington.George Washington-hero of the French and Indian War, commander in chief of the Continental Army, and first president of the United States-died on December 14, 1799. The myth-making began immediately thereafter, and the Washington mythos crafted after his death remains largely intact. But what do we really know about Washington as an upper-class man?Washington is frequently portrayed by his biographers as America at its unflinching best: tall, shrewd, determined, resilient, stalwart, and tremendously effective in action. But this aggressive and muscular version of Washington is largely a creation of the nineteenth century. Eighteenth-century ideals of upper-class masculinity would have preferred a man with refined aesthetic tastes, graceful and elegant movements, and the ability and willingness to clearly articulate his emotions. At the same time, these eighteenth-century men subjected themselves to intense hardship and inflicted incredible amounts of violence on each other, their families, their neighbors, and the people they enslaved. In First Among Men: George Washington and the Myth of American Masculinity, Valsania considers Washington's complexity and apparent contradictions in three main areas: his physical life (often bloody, cold, injured, muddy, or otherwise unpleasant), his emotional world (sentimental, loving, and affectionate), and his social persona (carefully constructed and maintained). In each, he notes, the reality diverges from the legend quite drastically. Ultimately, Valsania challenges readers to reconsider what they think they know about Washington.Aided by new research, documents, and objects that have only recently come to light, First Among Men tells the fascinating story of a living and breathing person who loved, suffered, moved, gestured, dressed, ate, drank, and had sex in ways that may be surprising to many Americans. In this accessible, detailed narrative, Valsania presents a full, complete portrait of Washington as readers have rarely seen him before: as a man, a son, a father, and a friend.

Sexuality is the fifth revised and updated edition of the classic text for understanding human sexuality. This new edition brings the arguments and evidence fully up to date and explores their implication for many topical controversies, around LGBTQ+ rights, the trans experience and gender fluidity, same-sex marriage, sexual autonomy and consent, and the meanings of sexual choice.Since it was first published in the 1980s, Sexuality has been at the cutting edge of the study of the social and historical meanings of sexuality. Blending deep empirical knowledge with theoretical sophistication and an acute sensitivity to the politics of sexuality, the book offers an informed framework for understanding the complexities of sexual life. A key insight of the book is that the ways we think and speak about sexuality make a major contribution to the ways we live it. Sexuality may be rooted in biological possibilities, but it is shaped and experienced through languages and meanings which are inevitably historical and social in nature. The book explores with clarity and precision the invention and re-invention of sexual meanings, the question of what constitutes a true sex and the biological and social roots of sexual difference, the challenges of diversity, the re-making of sexuality as a highly divisive political subject and the implications of the transformation of intimate life in the past few generations. These are seen in the context of profound changes that are re-fashioning the world, especially globalisation, cyber-sex, and the rise of new forms of agency, including among women and LGBTQ+ people, which have fed into new claims for sexual human rights. This new edition of Sexuality will be an indispensable guide for students in the social sciences with an interest in the ever-changing worlds of sexuality.
