Bringing together essays on India, Bangladesh, Myanmar and Europe, Migration, Trafficking and Gender Construction: Women in Transition offers valuable insights on women's migration and demonstrates how tremendous political upheavals-the partition of India, the creation of Burma or the breakup of the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia-bring about new geography, demography and economies that are conducive to people's displacement. Immigrants face racial-ethnic stratification, location segregation in ghettoes or camps and difficulties to access economic opportunities, leading usually to downward assimilation. Emphasizing intersectionality between gender and migration, the book highlights women's experiences holistically and also shows how migration is closely aligned to trafficking.

Through narratives, case studies and secondary data from different regions and countries, it points out the very different significance of female labour migration compared to men's. Ongoing conflicts and forcible displacement against 'newcomers', where women are particularly vulnerable, are discussed, as are the complexities of ethnic identity. This book will give readers a comprehensive idea of the scale and complexity of women's migration today.

There are three overarching themes that connect the chapters: interdisciplinarity, intersectionality, and identity. This interdisciplinary compilation includes contributions from scholars in cultural studies, social work, English, psychology, anthropology, and education. Essays include empirical research, making use of both quantitative and qualitative methods as well as personal reflections and interpretation. Each chapter makes central the critical significance of intersectionality, locating privilege and oppression within larger social systems and institutional structures, as an 'interlocking matrix of relationships.'

These chapters challenge, recognize, and question whiteness, with the intention that they encourage us to do the same, in our own lives, practices, behaviors, and disciplines. By taking whiteness seriously, we might begin to move toward explicit antiracist efforts, dismantling those structures and hierarchies that enable only some to speak as 'just humans.'

The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Lesbian Studies.

Within queer, transgender, and Latinx and Chicanx cultural politics, brown transgender narratives are frequently silenced and erased. Brown trans subjects are treated as deceptive, unnatural, nonexistent, or impossible, their bodies, lives, and material circumstances represented through tropes and used as metaphors. Restoring personhood and agency to these subjects, Francisco J. Galarte advances "brown trans figuration" as a theoretical framework to describe how transness and brownness coexist within the larger queer, trans, and Latinx historical experiences.

Brown Trans Figurations presents a collection of representations that reveal the repression of brown trans narratives and make that repression visible and palpable. Galarte examines the violent deaths of two transgender Latinas and the corresponding narratives that emerged about their lives, analyzes the invisibility of brown transmasculinity in Chicana feminist works, and explores how issues such as transgender politics can be imagined as part of Chicanx and Latinx political movements. This book considers the contexts in which brown trans narratives appear, how they circulate, and how they are reproduced in politics, sexual cultures, and racialized economies.

This book takes an intimate look at the lives of British migrants in Sitges, an affluent coastal tourist town in Northern Spain and investigates ideas of gender, sexuality, and national identity as they are brought to life through the voices of British lifestyle migrants.

Situating Sitges as a specifically affluent and "middle-class" location representing a particular form of "lifestyle migration," this rich and detailed study explores how the experiences of British migrants re-inscribe culturally specific understandings of the relationship between space, place, culture and identity. What ultimately emerges is an account of the complex structural constraints of identity, as British migrants find themselves stuck within the stereotype of badly-behaved Brits Abroad and entangled in highly conservative conceptualisations of gender and sexuality, that leave them unable to live the kind of cosmopolitan lifestyles that they so purposefully sought.

This is a fascinating study suitable for researchers in gender and sexuality studies, tourism, sociology, and anthropology.

Tiffany N. Florvil examines the role of queer and straight women in shaping the contours of the modern Black German movement as part of the Black internationalist opposition to racial and gender oppression. Florvil shows the multifaceted contributions of women to movement making, including Audre Lorde's role in influencing their activism; the activists who inspired Afro-German women to curate their own identities and histories; and the evolution of the activist groups Initiative of Black Germans and Afro-German Women. These practices and strategies became a rallying point for isolated and marginalized women (and men) and shaped the roots of contemporary Black German activism.

Richly researched and multidimensional in scope, Mobilizing Black Germany offers a rare in-depth look at the emergence of the modern Black German movement and Black feminists' politics, intellectualism, and internationalism.

This book explores the experiences of migrant mothers through the lens of the online communities they have created and participate in. Examining the ways in which migrant mothers build relationships with each other through these online communities and find ways to make a place for themselves and their families in a new country, it highlights the often overlooked labour that goes into sustaining these groups and facilitating these new relationships and spaces of trust. Through the concept of 'digital community mothering,' the author draws links to Black feminist scholarship that has shed light on the kinds of mothering that exist beyond the mother-child dyad. Providing new insights into the experiences of women who mother 'away from home' in this contemporary digital age, this volume explores the concepts of imagined maternal communities, personal maternal narratives, and migrant maternal imaginaries, highlighting the ways in which migrant mothers imagine themselves within local, national, and diasporic maternal communities. As such, it will appeal to scholars and students with interests in migration and diaspora studies, contemporary motherhood and the sociology of the family, and modern forms of online sociality.
