This book offers a fresh feminist perspective on prostitution. It challenges the 'sex work' perspective, drawing on experience from rape law and #MeToo campaigns in Ireland and elsewhere to develop a new legal concept of 'compromised consent'.

This concept justifies the introduction of Nordic Model laws banning the purchase of sex. It recognises that an individual consent to sell sex is necessarily compromised by structural exploitation within the vastly profitable global sex industry.

While 'sex work' proponents increasingly dominate academic discourse on prostitution, this book asserts that they have co-opted the language of feminism to mask the immense power and patriarchal control exerted by the industry. Their view of 'consent' is based on a dangerous premise. They cannot say that those who sell sex do so out of mutual desire; rather consent is portrayed as an expression of individual choice, thus ignoring the intersectional gendered collective context within which commercial sex transactions take place worldwide.

By contrast, this book argues that presumptions of 'consent' in prostitution directly undermine the legal principles of affirmative consent and contemporary law reforms hard-won by feminist activists on rape and gender-based violence. A view of consent as 'compromised' within the sex trade derives from socialist theorising, as well as from legal re-conceptualisations of consent in other settings. It also reflects the reality of conditions within the sex industry.

Presenting a study of the Galli priests of the Roman cult of Cybele, the Great Mother goddess, this book examines the archaeological evidence to give a clearer picture of the priesthood. The Galli were priests renowned in Antiquity for their crossdressing, mendicant, ecstatic behaviour and their infamous act of self-castration. However, most of our understanding of the Galli comes from an incomplete, fragmentary and scathing literary record. This book aims to rectify this imbalance by re-assessing them in light of the material evidence, and by comparing them with subsequent cultural groups.

Through the use of three comparative case studies from Polynesia, India and North America, this book analyses the ancient social group with these three modern 'gender variant' counterparts to highlight the 'othered' identity and experience of the Galli. The study reveals shared similarities regarding gendered 'other' attire, religious associations and sexual relationships. This approach offers a remarkable insight into the Galli cult, and poses questions on how similar human social groups operate, irrespective of time and place.

In Caste War Now and Never scholar S. B. West considers Yucatan's nineteenth-century Caste War, the longest and most violent Indigenous uprising of the Western Hemisphere, to argue that it actually never occurred.

Instead, West writes that the violent events grouped under the "Caste War" label must be understood through alternative frameworks that resist the emergent logics of race war and include related regulatory matrices like gender and land. Through this lens, the Caste War emerges as a discursive construct rooted in an anti-Indigenous archive that served the political interests of a frustrated regional elite during the rise of liberalism and nationhood. West argues that Caste War discourse unfolds as a technology that mobilized and legitimized genocidal actions against racialized rebels and inspired assimilation into hegemonic political and social structures.

In the second half of the book, West looks at the Caste War to engage its contemporary polysemic nature through close readings of Yucatec Maya texts, stories, and other forms of knowledge production. These sources reframe the Caste War as an important part of a framework of resistance that defies colonial time and reclaims narrative control of its events.

Caste War Now and Never captures how Maya communities understand the conflict as ongoing and demonstrates that although the Caste War never occurred as such, it continues to endure presently.

In Fearless Philanthropy, Roberta Brandes Gratz tells the story of Edith Rosenwald Stern-rich, progressive, and Jewish-who arrived in New Orleans in 1921, the wife of successful cotton broker Edgar Bloom Stern. Edith encountered a city rife with racism and antisemitism, and run by a set of entrenched social rules that she was not about to abide by. Her father, Julius Rosenwald of Sears & Roebuck, one of the richest men in America, had begun transforming lives of Black Americans in the South through his efforts to promote Black education. Edith proceeded to follow in his footsteps, and with her willing partner Edgar helped revolutionize aspects of New Orleans still visible today.

In telling the story of the Sterns, Gratz spotlights the outsider category of Jews in New Orleans, the specific impacts of the Mardi Gras social structure upon them, and the Sterns' influence on education in the South. Edith founded two pioneering educational institutions, while Edgar led a biracial group in the founding of Dillard University and Flint-Goodridge Hospital to serve the Black community. In 1947, Edgar purchased New Orleans radio station WDSU for son Edgar Jr. to run, and a year later Edgar Jr. opened WDSU-TV, the sixth major television station in the South. WDSU editorials favoring school integration, together with Edith's financial support of the desegregation campaign of the local women's group Save Our Schools, had a great impact during a volatile time. Edgar's rebuilding of the St. Louis Hotel (now the Royal Orleans), begun in the late 1940s and continued throughout the next decade, helped initiate the revitalization of the deteriorating French Quarter. As if that weren't enough, the Sterns led the development of Pontchartrain Park, the first Black middle-class housing development in the United States backed by the FHA.

Gratz's passionate account of Edith and Edgar Stern, showing how they grappled with issues of Black rights, philanthropy, civil rights, education, historic preservation, and the arts in a political and social climate antagonistic to change, provides a fascinating chronicle of New Orleans during a period of pivotal development.

Making Freedom Work tells the stories of five free women of color in antebellum New Orleans. The lives of Eulalie Mandeville, Henriette Delille, Marie Couvent, Cecille Bonille, and Marie Dolores Laveaux reveal the economic, legal, and cultural strategies free Black women used to move through a racially stratified, patriarchal slave society. Janet Morrison argues that free women of color could play a crucial role in the city's economic, religious, and communal life, even as they navigated and contested the restraints placed upon them by their race and gender. Foregrounding the voices of these women and their families, Morrison recovers stories that have long been marginalized in New Orleans history.

During a period of profound transformation in New Orleans-including French and Spanish colonial legacies, imposed American racial hierarchies after the Louisiana Purchase, and increased mobility within the Atlantic world-these five women found numerous ways to exercise their agency in a world that was not designed for them. They owned businesses, accumulated property, pursued litigation, engaged in philanthropy, and provided religious leadership, all while building durable networks of care, education, and spirituality. Avoiding the dangers of outright rebellion, the women employed strategies of gendered resistance-refusal, adaptation, collaboration-that often proved very successful, carving out space for survival in ways that confounded societal expectations of who they could be and what they could accomplish.

Morrison draws on a rich trove of archival sources such as censuses, city directories, notarial records, wills, successions, and court cases. Recognizing that these records were produced within white-controlled bureaucratic systems, Making Freedom Work attends closely to both their evidentiary value and their silences. It also confronts the complexities of slaveholding by free people of color, interpreting it as part of a broader struggle for security, status, and distance from enslavement, while emphasizing the uneven and contingent relationships between enslavers and the enslaved.

Making Freedom Work reintroduces these women-so often dismissed and devalued in their own time-as central historical actors, highlighting their influence as entrepreneurs, community builders, educators, and mothers of the next generation.

Examines feminist strategies of persistence and adaptation in Central America from the 1980s to 2020.

A Praxis of Persistence establishes persistence as a framework for understanding methods of feminist activism in El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Blending literary and ethnographic approaches, Kenna Neitch analyzes texts produced by activist movements from the 1980s to 2020-from collective testimonio to institutional publications (encuentros) to social media-and connects them to the movements' cultural impact and organizing practices, such as generative conflict, horizontal cross-border networks, and what she terms strategic adaptability. What these texts and practices have in common, Neitch argues, is feminist persistence-a balance of action, preservation, and creation adaptable across contexts. A Praxis of Persistence provides one of the first scholarly accounts of #MeToo in Central America while remaining grounded in the region's lineage of activism against sexual violence. Through the framework of persistence, this book highlights the vitality of Central American women's activism and offers a repertoire of methods for reckoning with the realities of uneven progress in feminist struggle.

Between 1880 and 1910, as Jim Crow's legal apparatus transformed Louisiana's complex racial landscape into a stark binary, Creole women fought to preserve their community's distinctive identity through the most ordinary acts of daily life. In their households, they cultivated kinship arrangements that prioritized mutual care over conventional family structures. In workshops and factories, they navigated the degradation of traditional occupations while strategically avoiding associations with Black women's labor. In churches, they deployed Catholic sacraments to formalize social bonds and secure legal protections. In courtrooms, they exploited Louisiana's racial ambiguities to defend their families and assert their claims to elevated status. Through these seemingly mundane spheres of daily existence, Creole women resisted the racial order that sought to collapse all people of African descent into a single category of Blackness.

Making Creole: Women and the Creole Community in Early Jim Crow New Orleans examines how Creole women took action against the systematic erosion of their privileges. As Louisiana moved from recognizing the legal status of free people of color to enforcing rigid Jim Crow segregation, Creole women became the primary architects of sociocultural preservation. Before the Civil War, Louisiana law had distinguished all free persons of African descent as legally separate from both enslaved persons and white people, granting them specific rights and privileges based on their "free" status rather than their complexion alone. The end of slavery eliminated this legal distinction. By the early twentieth century, Jim Crow legislation systematically forced all people of African descent into a single racialized category of Blackness, erasing the complex racial hierarchies that had previously structured Louisiana society. In this context, Creole women's labor in managing complex kinship networks, preserving Franco-Catholic traditions, policing community boundaries, and strategically navigating legal institutions constituted essential political work that sustained not just families but an entire ethnic community under siege.

Using an innovative "speculative demography" methodology, Natasha L. McPherson analyzes more than nine thousand transcribed records from census data, court documents, and Catholic church registers, including materials from the Sisters of the Holy Family, to reconstruct patterns of Creole women's resistance between 1880 and 1910. Making Creole moves beyond traditional narratives of political organizing to illuminate how women's everyday practices became mechanisms of ethnic identity formation and cultural survival, revealing resistance from the intimate spaces where it actually occurred.

This book explores the profound impact of spiritual activism within the Chicana feminist movement in Texas. It illuminates how a cohort of Texas Chicanas embraced spiritual activism in pursuit of social change during the movement and into the present day.

The book draws on an array of qualitative methodologies-including interviews, autoethnography, testimonio, platicas, and archival analysis-to develop what the author formulates as "methodologies of the spirit." In Reframing the Long 1960s Estella Tincknell explores the way British crime films and television series made during or about that extended decade have been marked by ongoing tensions between nostalgic myths of masculinity, power and whiteness and attempts to challenge or transform those dominant narratives.

Tincknell blends cultural analysis and original research with close reading to examine a wide variety of crime subgenres from police procedurals and heist films to gangster narratives and thrillers, comparing the approaches of texts such as Z-Cars (1962-1978), Robbery (1967), Get Carter (1971) and The Sweeney (1975-1978) with those of period dramas aimed at twenty-first century audiences, including The Great Train Robbery (2013), Legend (2015), The Trial of Christine Keeler (2019) and Endeavour (2012-2023). Tincknell identifies the important intersections between text, genre, nostalgia and popular memory as she traces how persistent myths about crime and criminality-and about "the long 1960s" as a defining period for British cultural identity-have been represented and recirculated.

This book considers the apparent invisibility of lesbianism throughout the literary history of the Hispanic Caribbean (Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic), specifically during the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries (1970s-2010s). The book looks at the way in which certain circumstances simultaneously hide, regulate, and allow the expression of what are considered sexual "deviancies." It observes the methods through which alternative female sexualities have been previously silenced or represented only at the symbolic level and explores the reasons why lesbian characters have only recently found public and open representation within the literature of the islands.
