Koralus, Philipp, Reason and Inquiry: The Erotetic Theory. 352 pp. 2022:12 (Oxford U. Pr., UK) <686-72>
ISBN 978-0-19-882376-6 hard ¥20,750.- (税込) GB£ 72.00

Reason and Inquiry: The Erotetic Theory presents a unified theory of the human capacity for reasoning and decision-making. The erotetic theory accounts for a diverse range of empirically documented fallacies and framing effects. It shows how the same mental processes that yield fallacies can yield what logicians call first-order validity and probabilistic coherence in reasoning, as well as rational decision-making as conceived by economists. The book's central idea is that our minds naturally aim at resolving issues, and if we are sufficiently inquisitive in the process, we can avoid mistakes. The erotetic theory holds that both the successes and the failures of reason are due to this aim. Rationality is secured if we reach what is described by the theory as erotetic equilibrium.

Herissone-Kelly, Peter, Controlling Love: The Ethics and Desirability of Using 'Love Drugs'. (Elements in Bioethics and Neuroethics) 75 pp. 2022:9 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <686-579>
ISBN 978-1-00-929905-3 paper ¥4,899.- (税込) GB£ 17.00 *

Recent research in neurochemistry has shown there to be a number of chemical compounds that are implicated in the patterns of lust, attraction, and attachment that undergird romantic love. For example, there is evidence that the phenomenon of attachment is associated with the action of oxytocin and vasopressin. There is therefore some reason to suppose that patterns of lust, attraction, and attachment could be regulated via manipulation of these substances in the brain: in other words, by their use as 'love drugs'. A growing bioethical literature asks searching questions about this prospect, and especially about the use of such drugs to enhance or reignite attachment in flagging relationships. This Element examines some of the central arguments on the topic, and sounds a note of caution. It urges that there are reasons to think the states of attachment produced or facilitated by the use of such drugs would not be desirable.

Schueler-Lubienetzki, Heidrun / Lubienetzki, Ulf, Difficult People at Work: Action Strategies for Dealing with Challenging Personalities. 116 pp. 2022:10 (Springer, GW) <686-501>
ISBN 978-3-662-65338-8 hard ¥9,234.- (税込) EUR 37.99

This book helps professionals deal with difficult or even dangerous colleagues, employees or superiors. Some people poison the working atmosphere, make other people ill and cost their companies a lot of money. Often the cause lies in a psychological disorder, we are then often dealing with narcissists or psychopaths, but usually the destructive behavior is not (yet) based on a psychological disorder. This book introduces a collective term for such people - it calls them "toxic people" - and helps both those affected and those responsible in companies and organizations to recognize them, to protect themselves and others from them, and to take promising action against them. In addition to information on the typical characteristics of "toxic people," their motives are explained and concrete strategies for action and examples of tried-and-tested assistance are provided. A new chapter provides vivid, exciting case studies from real-life situations. A book for managers and those affected as well as personnel developers, trainers, consultants and coaches in companies and organizations. This book is a translation of the original German 2nd edition Schwierige Menschen am Arbeitsplat by Heidrun Schuler-Lubienetzki and Ulf Lubienetzki, published by Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature in 2017. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically differently from a conventional translation. Springer Nature works continuously to further the development of tools for the production of books and on the related technologies to support the authors.

Kellerman, Henry, Acting Out and Sin: Psychoanalytic and Theological Perspectives. (SpringerBriefs in Psychology) 76 pp. 2022:10 (Springer, GW) <686-171>
ISBN 978-3-031-13036-6 paper ¥12,151.- (税込) EUR 49.99

This brief treatise explores the common threads to psychoanalytic thought and theological theory. It uses a psychoanalytic lens to examine Judeo/Christian concepts of individual will, consciousness and the unconscious, and the apparent confounding idea of sin. What is new is that the definition of sin is revealed as a psychoanalytic translation of acting-out. Focusing on the behavior of acting-out it illuminates ideas that are part of Western cultural tradition providing insights to those interested in the psychology, and its history and philosophy. As such, it is a highly relevant work for psychologists, psychiatrists, and psychoanalysts, as well as for a comparative study of psychoanalytic and theological intersecting structures.

O'Connor, Peter / Gomez, Claudia Rozas, Slow Wonder: Letters on Imagination and Education. (Elements in Creativity and Imagination) 75 pp. 2022:10 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <686-1379>
ISBN 978-1-00-912439-3 paper ¥4,899.- (税込) GB£ 17.00 *

Slow wonder bears witness to the possibilities of the imagination. In a series of letters the authors playfully imagine alternatives to current orthodoxies that privilege technocratic approaches to education that have strangled discussion about what it might mean to make education good and right, or even beautiful. The authors position the imagination as a powerful site of resistance within education and academic life. They unpack their philosophical positionings through vignettes of their teaching practice, poetry written as reflective musings and discursive theoretical pieces, including letters they have written to others. They attempt to marry the poetic and the academic, the rational and the affective, to model a slow approach to wondering about the joy, beauty and possibilities of life. In this spirit, they contemplate new ways to think and live in education.

Alefaio, Siautu, Pacific-Indigenous Psychology: Galuola, A Niu-Wave of Psychological Practices. 210 pp. 2022:10 (Springer, GW) <686-1381>
ISBN 978-3-031-14431-8 hard ¥31,599.- (税込) EUR 129.99

This book provides an overview of Pacific-Indigenous knowledge as insights of Oceanic citizen-science to inform culturally-safe practice for psychology. It profiles contemporary Pacific needs in areas of crisis such as family violence, education disparities and health inequities, and points to ancient Pacific-indigenous knowledges as tools of healing for global diasporic communities in need. The historical evolution of psychology's knowledge base and practice illustrates a fundamental crisis in the method of producing knowledge for psychology - the absence of Pacific-indigenous cultural knowledge. It suggests more effective research methodologies grounded in Pacific-Indigenous epistemologies and ontologies for psychology and overall community capability. It fosters practice perspectives and strategies based on NIU-psychology (New Indigenous Understandings) for innovative solutions to modern-day crises of humanity.

ISBN 978-1-00-904583-4 paper ¥17,288.- (税込) GB£ 59.99 *

History and Systems of Psychology provides an engaging introduction to the rich story of psychology's past. Retaining its trademark clarity and accessibility, the Eighth Edition also features expanded coverage of non-western traditions in psychology as well as added coverage of nineteenth-century advances in philosophy and science. The emergence of applications of psychology in clinical, educational, neuroscientific, and social settings are further emphasized within the twenty-first-century landscape of psychology as a cognitive and a positive science. Assuming little prerequisite knowledge, the authors discuss the people, places, and concepts that have shaped psychology's story, and show that we remain fascinated and perplexed by the same enduring questions that confronted our ancestors - namely, our wonder at our subjectivity and consciousness of self. The Eighth Edition is supported by rich online resources including a manual, test bank, and lecture slides for instructors, and study guides and links to primary source literature for students.

Buss, David M., The Oxford Handbook of Human Mating. 816 pp. 2022:11 (Oxford U. Pr., US) <686-1385>
ISBN 978-0-19-753643-8 hard ¥37,026.- (税込) US$ 165.00 *

The scientific study of human mating has mushroomed over the past three decades, and this growth in turn has generated a proliferation of evolving literature revealing fresh discoveries about mate attraction, mate choice, mate retention, marital satisfaction, jealousy, infidelity, intimate partner violence, breakups, internet dating, cyberstalking, and sexual coercion. In The Oxford Handbook of Human Mating, editor David M. Buss showcases contributions from "the best and the brightest" scientists in the field, providing up-to-date summaries of theories and empirical evidence of the science of human mating strategies. Much of the research in the field is guided by sexual selection theory. Over 150 years after Darwin's proposal of sexual selection theory, it has become the most important overarching theoretical framework for the scientific study of the mating strategies of all sexually reproducing species, including humans. A mountain of research centered around Darwin's classic book has documented the many complexities of human mate competition and mate choice; how these processes differ between the sexes; and how they differ as a function of sex ratio, mate value, social contexts, ovulation cycles, personality characteristics, and cultural norms and mating rituals. Thus, the science is now ripe for a collection of work by eminent scholars in the field. David M. Buss is a leading researcher and pioneer in the study of human mating strategies, and he applies his expertise to the curation of this volume, which includes major sections covering theories of human mating; mate selection and mate attraction; mate competition; sexual conflict in mating; human pair bonding; the endocrinology of mating; and mating in the modern world.

Ghosh, Chandril, Data Analysis with Machine Learning for Psychologists: Crash Course to Learn Python 3 and Machine Learning in 10 hours. 161 pp. 2022:10 (Springer, GW) <686-1389>
ISBN 978-3-031-14633-6 hard ¥31,599.- (税込) EUR 129.99

The power of data drives the digital economy of the 21st century. It has been argued that data is as vital a resource as oil was during the industrial revolution. An upward trend in the number of research publications using machine learning in some of the top journals in combination with an increasing number of academic recruiters within psychology asking for Python knowledge from applicants indicates a growing demand for these skills in the market. While there are plenty of books covering data science, rarely, if ever, books in the market address the need of social science students with no computer science background. They are typically written by engineers or computer scientists for people of their discipline. As a result, often such books are filled with technical jargon and examples irrelevant to psychological studies or projects. In contrast, this book was written by a psychologist in a simple, easy-to-understand way that is brief and accessible. The aim for this book was to make the learning experience on this topic as smooth as possible for psychology students/researchers with no background in programming or data science. Completing this book will also open up an enormous amount of possibilities for quantitative researchers in psychological science, as it will enable them to explore newer types of research questions.

Munroe, Melanie / Ferrari, Michel (eds.), Post-Traumatic Growth to Psychological Well-Being: Coping Wisely with Adversity. (Lifelong Learning Book Series 30) 493 pp. 2022:11 (Springer, GW) <686-1395>
ISBN 978-3-031-15289-4 hard ¥41,323.- (税込) EUR 169.99

This book explores 'why some people experience post-traumatic growth leading to greater wisdom and others do not' and suggests that a critical variable is how one copes with that trauma: individuals who actively reflect on their experiences of trauma should develop higher levels of self-transcendent wisdom. This same dynamic has been shown both in research studies of post-traumatic growth and by therapists working with people who have experienced trauma, but these two bodies of work have rarely been brought into direct conversation with each other. In this volume, wisdom researchers and therapists with direct experience with trauma survivors comment on each other's ideas about how coping with adversity can lead to wisdom, and how their proposed models of developing wisdom incorporate the act of coping with a stressful or traumatic event. Based on a synthetic integration of the recommendations in each chapter, the book concludes with the introduction of a new conceptual framework that can better help even individuals who experience significant stressors in their life to cope well and develop wisdom that will be both theoretically robust and practically useful.

Sugarman, Susan, Freud's Interpretation of Dreams: A Reappraisal. 200 pp. 2022:12 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <686-1400>
ISBN 978-1-00-924412-1 hard ¥24,497.- (税込) GB£ 85.00 *

Freud always regarded The Interpretation of Dreams, and in particular its thesis that dreams fulfill wishes, as his landmark contribution and the scaffolding of his subsequent work. Susan Sugarman, after carefully examining the text and scrutinizing a range of Freud's other works, shows that the dreams book is not and cannot be that scaffolding. For, not only does his argument on dreams falter, but his reasoning elsewhere - in his case histories, his accounts of phenomena of ordinary waking life, and even his avowedly speculative writing - displays a strength and precision his account of dreams lacks. She concludes by exploring what is then left of the dreams theory and Freud's overall vision of the mind.

van der Linden, Sander, Foolproof: Why Misinformation Infects Our Minds and How to Build Immunity. 336 pp. 2023:3 (Norton, US) <686-1402>
ISBN 978-0-393-88144-8 hard ¥6,732.- (税込) US$ 30.00 *

From fake news to conspiracy theories, from inflammatory memes to misleading headlines, misinformation has swiftly become the defining problem of our era. The crisis threatens the integrity of our democracies, our ability to cultivate trusting relationships, even our physical and psychological well-being-yet most attempts to combat it have proven insufficient. In Foolproof, one of the world's leading experts on misinformation lays out a crucial new paradigm for understanding and defending ourselves against the worldwide infodemic. With remarkable clarity, Sander van der Linden explains why our brains are so vulnerable to misinformation, how it spreads across social networks, and what we can do to protect ourselves and others. Like a virus, misinformation infects our minds, exploiting shortcuts in how we see and process information to alter our beliefs, modify our memories, and replicate at astonishing rates. Once the virus takes hold, it's very hard to cure. Strategies like fact-checking and debunking can leave a falsehood still festering or, at worst, even strengthen its hold. But we aren't helpless. As van der Linden shows based on award-winning original research, we can cultivate immunity through the innovative science of "prebunking": inoculating people against false information by preemptively exposing them to a weakened dose, thus empowering them to identify and fend off its manipulative tactics. Deconstructing the characteristic techniques of conspiracies and misinformation, van der Linden gives readers practical tools to defend themselves and others against nefarious persuasion-whether at scale or around their own dinner table.

ISBN 978-3-031-11759-6 hard ¥34,030.- (税込) EUR 139.99

This book takes an epistemological and theoretical stance in investigating the phenomenon of creativity and its processes. Creativity is analyzed through the lens of cultural psychology, in which psychological processes emerge over the course of life, and can only be understood in relation to the subject's history and life experiences. Dialogism is presented as central for the constitutive dynamics of the developing subject and the emergence of creative actions through the expression of human agency. The authors highlight Bakhtinian dialogism and its developments in the scientific field of psychology and related areas to shed new light on creativity and its processes. The authors argue this will enable a better understanding of creativity in its development and emergence, and its impact on individuals and society.

ISBN 978-1-00-911495-0 paper ¥4,899.- (税込) GB£ 17.00 *

The existential threat posed by climate change presents a challenge to all those concerned about the next generation. This Element reviews and discusses its implications for the development of children (ages 0-12) today and in the future, and for the parents, teachers, researchers, and professionals who have responsibility for children. This Element adopts a bioecological model to examine both the direct impacts on children's physical and psychological well-being as well as indirect impacts through all the systems external to the child, emphasizing the greater vulnerability of children in the Global South. Given evidence of well-founded climate anxiety, this Element examines children's coping strategies and discusses the key roles of caregivers and schools in protecting and preparing children to face current and future challenges - with knowledge, hope, and agency as central themes. This Element highlights many under-researched areas and calls for action by all those caring for and about children's future.
