This book provides a definitive guide to the value of reflective thinking in the modern world, showing how today's most fundamental problems are, to an important degree, based on citizens' thinking styles. The authors highlight the importance of reflection by systematically revealing the causes underlying differences in people's thinking styles and the consequences of thinking in different ways. These different ways of thinking contribute to socio-political views, and can result in misunderstandings of complex issues such as beliefs in conspiracy theories and fake news, anti-vaccine attitudes, and even fundamentalism and extremism. By training and strengthening reflective thinking in society, via education and other means, we can encourage individuals to challenge misinformation, and their own belief systems around controversial topics. The book also explores the idea that reflection is not enough on its own and examines the shortcomings of reflection and the other skills that complement it positively, especially holistic and systems thinking. In doing so, the authors highlight how implementing a solid, science-based understanding of key issues in education and society at large, can contribute to the solution of problems, from climate change to economic inequality.By showing how we can put our reflective capacity to good use, alongside critically examining reflection in relation to modern problems experienced by humanity, this book is a fascinating reading for students, researchers, and academics in psychology, politics, and the broader social sciences.

McCormick, Miriam Schleifer, Belief as Emotion. 160 pp. 2025:2 (Oxford U. Pr., UK) <731-37>
ISBN 978-0-19-887582-6 hard ¥22,022.- (税込) GB£ 77.00 *

Belief as Emotion argues that belief is a type of emotion, where emotions are understood as irreducibly blended states that transcend the cognitive/non-cognitive divide, containing representational, motivational and phenomenological elements. On this view to believe is to feel that the way one represents the world is accurate and this feeling is a kind of evaluation. This view helps explain a number of puzzling phenomena in epistemology, philosophy of mind, philosophy of action, and philosophy of religion. Further, thinking of beliefs as emotions helps us to understand the ethics of belief. It offers a better understanding of what are sometimes called "edge cases" of beliefs, ones that seem belief-like but that are hard to fit into most standard pictures of belief. These include delusions, religious and political attitudes, and belief in the context of trust. Given their complicated relationship to evidence and action, many theorists claim that such attitudes should not be categorized as beliefs, but as a different mental state. Belief as Emotion does not force us to exclude states as real beliefs that we pre-reflectively think of as beliefs, and that does not require us to "outsource" the work belief seems to do to other mental states. The view also illuminates the phenomena of self-deception, implicit bias, and deep disagreement. Ideal emotional maintenance is complex; thinking of beliefs as emotions acknowledges and embraces this complexity of our doxastic lives.

Boski, Pawel, Cultural Psychology and Acculturation. (Elements in Psychology and Culture) 116 pp. 2024:5 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <731-1310>
ISBN 978-1-00-945105-5 hard ¥14,296.- (税込) GB£ 49.99
ISBN 978-1-00-945110-9 paper ¥4,862.- (税込) GB£ 17.00

This Element offers a new theoretical model of acculturation within the general framework of cultural psychology. It is divided into four sections. First, cross-cultural and cultural orientations are contrasted. The psychology of economic migration (EARN), separate from the psychology of acculturation (LEARN), is the theme of the next section. Berry's model of acculturation preferences is discussed in section three. It serves as a contrasting reference point for the tripartite model of bicultural competencies, developed in the final section. The three interconnected components are symbols, language, and values/practices characterize both enculturation and acculturation. As a second culture learning process, acculturation is not restricted to immigration. It may take a vicarious (remote) shape in the home country. Reaching bicultural competencies and identities, in the long run, is the proposed outcome of acculturation.

Crilly, Nathan, Design Thinking and Other Approaches: How Different Disciplines See, Think and Act. (Elements in Creativity and Imagination) 75 pp. 2024:7 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <731-1313>
ISBN 978-1-00-949867-8 hard ¥14,296.- (税込) GB£ 49.99 *
ISBN 978-1-00-949866-1 paper ¥4,862.- (税込) GB£ 17.00 *

Efforts to promote creativity often centre on encouraging people to engage in 'design thinking', 'systems thinking' and 'entrepreneurial thinking'. These different approaches are most often defined, taught and applied in mutual isolation, which has obscured what distinguishes them from each other, what they have in common and how they might be combined. These three approaches are also most often described in isolation from the approaches that characterize other disciplines, all of which are relevant to how problems are identified, framed and solved. These other approaches include 'computational thinking', 'engineering thinking', 'scientific thinking', 'evolutionary thinking', 'mathematical thinking', 'statistical thinking', 'geographical thinking', 'historical thinking', 'anthropological thinking' and many more. Examining these approaches as a set allows each of them to be better understood, and also reveals the connections and contrasts between them. Such comparisons provide the foundation for a more coordinated project to represent how different disciplinary approaches contribute to creative work.

A Reading of Anxiety follows the sessions of Lacan's Seminar X, examining its presentation of the structure of anxiety, step by step.Christian Fierens considers why and how the structure of anxiety always depends on speech even if it remains on the threshold between the symbolic and the real and explains that there is a genuine connection between anxiety and the Lacanian object a which puts in doubt the obviousness of any object. The book then explores the importance of anxiety for the practice of the analyst, determines that the object a is fundamentally void and discusses encountering nothingness. Finally, Fierens establishes that this nothingness inside the object and inside anxiety leads to the truth of anxiety.A Reading of Anxiety will be an essential book for students as well as clinicians to find a practical way to cope with anxiety as a clinical approach to the real in psychoanalysis. It will be relevant to all readers interested in the work of Lacan.

ISBN 978-0-19-878664-1 paper ¥11,436.- (税込) GB£ 39.99

Psychology in Everyday Life explores the ways in which students can use psychology to enhance their own lives, as individuals, at work, and as socially aware global citizens. Psychology in Everyday Life is founded on concepts of psychological literacy and psychologically literate citizenship (Halpern, 2010; Cranney and Dunn, 2011). These two related concepts consider the ways in which a psychology education can help students and graduates to apply psychology to everyday life in order to solve problems for themselves, for their employers, and in the wider community. The book begins by introducing these concepts, and then introduces the concept of thinking about psychology in relation to the self. Subsequent chapters address psychology in relation to a widening social circle and the text closes with applying psychology in a global context. At each step, the focus will be on learning to think psychologically in everyday situations, and on applying psychology and psychological research methods to solving problems in daily life. Key features - Takes a real-world approach by clearly addressing the relevance of psychology to modern lives. - Written with a focus on modern teaching requirements beyond the core domains, emphasizing students' skills and their application. - Each chapter begins with learning outcomes which underpin what students will learn and help to clarify salient concepts. - A one-page interview with a key figure (researcher or professional) in each chapter highlights the important issues in the topic area. - At least two activities per chapter set students real-life problems and encourage them to apply psychological theory and/or methods to solve the problem. - End of chapter summaries reaffirm what the knowledge and key take aways from the chapter. - Further reading suggestions at the end of each chapter allow students to deepen their learning, and provide professors with further class materials. - Also available as an e-book with functionality, navigation features, and links that offer extra learning support.

All children deserve access to the conditions and opportunities needed to thrive, including unbiased accessible healthcare and high-quality learning opportunities; safe, toxin-free communities and stable housing; access to nutritious meals; and secure, warm, available, and loving caregivers. Historic and contemporary injustices in US society have created inequities in opportunity and access to resources for Black, Latine, Asian, American Indian and Alaska Native, and other children of color, children with disabilities, children in poverty, and other marginalized children; these have contributed to stark disparities across child development outcomes. This Element overviews inequities in economic, educational, and health systems through historical and contemporary perspectives and describes how these inequities impact children and families. Solutions to address these inequities are considered for a fairer US society, starting with its youngest residents, where all families have what they need to thrive. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.

Item-response theory (IRT) represents a key advance in measurement theory. Yet, it is largely absent from curricula, textbooks and popular statistical software, and often introduced through a subset of models. This Element, intended for creativity and innovation researchers, researchers-in-training, and anyone interested in how individual creativity might be measured, aims to provide 1) an overview of classical test theory (CTT) and its shortcomings in creativity measurement situations (e.g., fluency scores, consensual assessment technique, etc.); 2) an introduction to IRT and its core concepts, using a broad view of IRT that notably sees CTT models as particular cases of IRT; 3) a practical strategic approach to IRT modeling; 4) example applications of this strategy from creativity research and the associated advantages; and 5) ideas for future work that could advance how IRT could better benefit creativity research, as well as connections with other popular frameworks.

Understanding human behaviour, thoughts, and emotional expressions can be challenging in the global context. Due to cultural differences, the study of psychology cannot be de-contextualised. This calls for unearthing of the explanatory systems that exist in Africa to understand and account for behaviour, emotions, and cognition of Africans. This call is addressed through the emergence of African Psychology (AP) or Indigenous Psychology in Africa (IPA) as a legitimate science of human experience. This Element discusses the motivations for AP, centrality of culture, demarcations of AP, and the different strands within AP. It highlights issues related to African philosophy, African cultural anthropology, African philosophy of science, and suitable methodological approaches for AP research. It also discusses some selected theoretical contributions and applications of AP. The Element concludes that AP researchers and practitioners need to pursue interdisciplinarity and avoid meaningless rejection of good ideas from other cultural settings.

The increased international legislation emphasising children's participation agenda heightened the need for high-quality research in early childhood. Listening to young children asserts their participation, agency and voices in research, an approach commonly associated with qualitative research methods. This Element provides a novel perspective to listening to children's voices by focusing on research methods in early childhood studies that are broadly categorised as quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods. Locating these research methods from a children's rights perspective, this Element is based on values that young children have the right to be involved in research irrespective of culture and context. Each section discusses how the different methodologies and approaches used in early childhood research align with the principles of children's participation and agency, as well as their right to express their views on matters that affect them. The Element concludes with a roadmap for future early childhood research and its ethical dissemination.

Giftedness often is defined in a transactional way: individuals give something in return for getting something from authorities who label them as gifted; the labeling authority then expects those individuals identified as 'gifted' to act in ways that justify the label. The authors place emphasis on transformational giftedness-giftedness that serves to make the world a better place. This Element stresses the importance of intelligence, not of the kind of narrow intelligence measured by IQ tests and their proxies, but rather the kind of broad intelligence used to adapt to a variety of real-world environments. The authors further discuss the nature of dual exceptionality, whereby individuals may be identified as having a disability yet at the same time act in gifted ways and thereby harbor the potential to contribute to the world in some distinguished fashion.

This new collection of essays by a range of Jungian analysts and scholars seeks to address the concept of individuation in contemporary times, and reflects on its meaning within the 21st century. The concept of individuation is at the core of Analytical Psychology, and can be considered the main legacy of C.G. Opening with a compelling conversation on the topic with Professor Sonu Shamdasani, the authors within this volume will delve into the concept of individuation and explore it in conjunction with clinical processes, synchronicities, the geopolitics of psychology and decolonial reciprocity, traditional healers and the Grail Legend, homosexuality and identity politics, polyamory and co-individuation, and with temporality and mortality.Featuring a wide range of perspectives from an international cast of authors, this volume will be of great interest to Jungian analysts, students and scholars interested in depth psychology and Jungian theory and anyone wanting to learn more about individuation.

Gossiping and its reputation effects are viewed as the most powerful mechanism to sustain cooperation without the intervention of formal authorities. Being virtually costless, gossiping is highly effective in monitoring and sanctioning norm violators. Rational individuals cooperate in order to avoid negative reputations. But this narrative is incomplete and often leads to wrong predictions. Goal Framing Theory, a cognitive-behavioral approach anchored in evolutionary research, provides a better explanatory framework. Three overarching goal frames (hedonic, gain, and normative) constantly compete for being in our cognitive foreground. This Element argues that for gossip to have reputation effects, a salient normative goal frame is required. But since the hedonic mindset usually trumps gain and normative concerns, most gossip will be driven by hedonic motives and therefore not have strong reputation effects. Propositions on cultural, structural, dispositional, situational, and technological gossip antecedents and consequences are developed and illustrated with evidence from the empirical record.

Borg, Emma, Acting for Reasons: In defence of Common-sense Psychology. 304 pp. 2024:12 (Oxford U. Pr., UK) <731-20>
ISBN 978-0-19-892900-0 hard ¥25,168.- (税込) GB£ 88.00

Acting for Reasons is about why we do what we do. It's also about how we arrive at an understanding of other people's actions. A traditional view in philosophy - 'Common-sense Psychology' - holds that mental states like beliefs and desires (states which provide a person's reasons for doing what they do) lie at the heart of intentional action and social cognition. According to this view, typically, what people do is a rational response to the reasons they have: I open the cookie jar because I'd like a cookie and believe there is one in there. As a corollary, understanding someone else's actions is held to depend on attributing them plausible mental states and reasoning: I think you opened the cookie jar because you wanted a cookie and believed there was one in there. This reasons-responsive understanding of action lies at the heart of crucial social notions like agency and responsibility. However, it has been thrown into doubt by experimental findings which apparently show that the common-sense appeal to reasons and reasoning is overly demanding and overly intellectualising, painting an idealised picture of decision-making which is rarely borne out by the evidence. If we get out of our armchairs and examine how people actually make decisions, the claim is, what we find is that people don't do what they do, typically, based on the reasons they have. Instead, people are swayed by biases and flaws in their reasoning systems, using cognitive heuristics (intuitive, gut-feel decision-making processes) which bypass the proper consultation of reasons. Furthermore, if we look at how animals, infants, and adults under time or other pressures understand the actions of others, what we find is that they appeal to simpler systems (e.g. looking only at environmental factors and overt behaviour), providing a route to action understanding that circumvents attribution of reasons and reasoning. In short, then, experimental findings show that common-sense psychology is wrong. This book is an attempt to reject that line of argument and defend the common-sense perspective, vindicating the core philosophical idea that, in the typical case, people do what they do for the reasons they have.

Nesti, Mark, Applied Psychology Practice in Professional Sport: Meeting the Person, Knowing the Athlete. 186 pp. 2024:12 (Routledge, UK) <731-1037>
ISBN 978-1-03-266996-0 hard ¥38,610.- (税込) GB£ 135.00
ISBN 978-1-03-266995-3 paper ¥9,434.- (税込) GB£ 32.99

Applied Psychology Practice in Professional Sport is the first text to draw directly on psychological work delivered over many years to individual players and staff inside English Premier League Football as well as other professional sports, such as cricket, tennis, and golf.A key feature of this new text is the use of examples from the author's applied practice, to demonstrate that many psychological terms and words used in the "lived world" of high-level professional sport, can be understood with greater depth and meaning where these are informed by more holistic perspectives such as existential, phenomenological, transpersonal and humanistic psychology. Implications for applied sport psychology practice are examined and recommendations offered.Although the book is about professional sport and psychology and is key readings for those associated within this discipline, the ideas and concepts discussed should be familiar to anyone involved in supporting people in challenging performance focused environments such as, business, education, or coaching professions. It is hoped that leaders, managers and other staff from these occupations, and closely related sectors, will find the book interesting and useful.

This important book brings together race, mental health and applied psychology, unpacking these areas from differing perspectives and offering new insights in the support of training and development of practice. The ability to work with issues of diversity and intersectionality within psychology is vital. Contributors with experience in counselling psychology and applied psychology from across varied social contexts and professional settings reframe and challenge familiar concepts in light of movements to decolonise the curriculum and decolonise psychology and therapy. The chapters offer clinical vignettes, lived experiences and reflective questions to provoke the reader's thinking and engage with curiosity and sensitivity around cultural bias, discrimination, language, and the evolution of terminologies. This book captures the relationship between the ethos of counselling psychology and race, offering a much-needed guide for how to encompass race and racialised experiences in the training and practice of psychology. Rooted in the UK context but applicable more widely, contributions cover training, supervision, ethical practice, racial trauma, bias and diagnosis, and politics, as well as perspectives and approaches in practice at the intersection of race and gender, age, neurodiversity, sexuality, and spirituality. This is a key resource for the continued development of in-training and experienced psychologists and psychotherapists, as well as other practitioners within the mental health and allied professions. It will also be of use to students on clinical training programmes and courses such as applied psychology, counselling, and psychotherapy.

Pilowsky Bankirer, Yael, Psychoanalytic Explorations of the Masculine and the Maternal: Uncovering the Image of Circumcision in Freud's Works. 264 pp. 2024:11 (Routledge, UK) <731-1228>
ISBN 978-1-032-49543-9 hard ¥37,180.- (税込) GB£ 130.00 *
ISBN 978-1-032-49539-2 paper ¥8,576.- (税込) GB£ 29.99 *

In this book, Yael Pilowsky Bankirer reads into Freud's writings with the unique prism of circumcision as a marker for both the formation of masculine identity, and for matricide, the disappearance of the mother.Pilowsky Bankirer uses Freud's idea of circumcision within a text as a Leitfossil: a key-fossil through which an unresolved unconscious conflict can be traced. She conducts a close reading of Freud's texts - including Little Hans, The Wolf Man, Totem and Taboo and Moses and Monotheism - to illuminate and uncover the textual unconscious, deconstruct the explicit narrative and open alternative psychoanalytic possibilities inherent to the encounter with the maternal realm. Throughout the volume, Pilowsky Bankirer informs her analysis by considering the work of Freud in tandem with that of Lacan, Kristeva, Irigaray, Derrida, Benjamin, Butler and more.Psychoanalytic Explorations of the Masculine and the Maternal: Uncovering the Image of Circumcision in Freud's Works will be of interest to scholars of psychoanalysis and practising analysts alike, particularly those interested in the intersection of gender studies and psychoanalysis.
