Thoughts for the Times on Groups and Masses: A Sigmund Freud Museum Symposium. (Figures of the Unconscious) 180 pp. 2025:1 (Leuven U. Pr., BE) <736-1396>
ISBN 978-94-6270-445-9 paper ¥11,088.- (税込) EUR 36.00
A timely contribution in this era of authoritarianism, right-wing populist movements, identity formation, and political correctness."In groups the most contradictory ideas can exist side by side and tolerate each other, without any conflict arising from the logical contradiction between them", wrote Freud in his 1921 book Group Psychology and the Analysis of the Ego. One hundred years later, in an age of war, social networks, and ubiquitous threats to democracy, the questions raised by Freud are as relevant as ever. In today's mass and group formations, psychological processes and mechanisms can be recognized as they were described by Freud a century ago: compliance, hypnotization, regression, idealization, identification, and fusion with the Other. This anthology is the result of an interdisciplinary conference organized by the Sigmund Freud Museum, Vienna. In their contributions, scholars from psychoanalysis, philosophy, sociology and literary studies present critical re-readings of the text and focus on current issues such as the rise of right-wing populist movements, the role of the narcissistic leader, and mass phenomena in the digital age.

Lee, Ahlam,
Questioning Conventional Assumptions about Competition Dynamics. 2025:4 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <736-1400>
ISBN 978-1-009-34809-6 hard ¥28,600.- (税込) GB£ 100.00
Competition permeates various facets of our lives, from the job market to sports arenas, influencing resource allocation, recognition opportunities, and societal dynamics. However, entrenched notions in social sciences, particularly the assumption of a linear correlation between competition and inequality within free-market systems, can limit perspectives. This book challenges such assumptions, delving deeper into the multifaceted nature of competition dynamics. Drawing from extensive literature and empirical data across diverse systems, cultures, and eras, it offers readers a nuanced understanding of competition's complexities. Contrary to prevailing beliefs, competition's roots are not solely tied to Western individualism and capitalism. By examining competition through cultural, economic, and political lenses, this book enables readers to recognize that such an assumption represents only a selective portion of competition dynamics. By embracing an interdisciplinary approach, this book encourages readers to reevaluate their perspectives on competition, recognizing its varied sources and consequences beyond conventional paradigms.

Dynamic Semiosis. (SpringerBriefs in Psychology) 114 pp. 2025:1 (Springer, GW) <736-1402>
ISBN 978-3-031-75601-6 paper ¥11,766.- (税込) EUR 49.99
This book aims to bring to readers the author's elaborated focus on the dynamic process of sign emergence, use, fixation and un-fixation, and dismissal. Its uniqueness is in its reliance on the organizing limits of irreversible time that renders the meaning construction by human beings to be constantly open-ended to face the uncertainties of the immediate future. This book emerged from a 9-month series of seminars at the Department of Semiotics at Tartu University in 2021-2022 as a Vaelis-Eesti Kuelalisprofessor, during which the linkages between semiotics and cultural psychology were scrutinized. In collaboration with doctoral students from various countries, the present SpringerBrief outlines the theoretical innovations that the author started during the seminars but completed in the two years after their end.

The Indispensability of Phenomenology, Experiment and History: Life and Work of Johannes Linschoten. (Theory and History in the Human and Social Sciences) 286 pp. 2024:12 (Springer, GW) <736-1403>
ISBN 978-3-031-74390-0 hard ¥32,952.- (税込) EUR 139.99
This book is the first comprehensive intellectual biography of Johannes Linschoten, whose work has been credited with helping to bring down the Utrecht School of phenomenological psychology. The authors show this to be a mistaken assumption in the light of Linschoten's entire oeuvre and demonstrate his importance for an understanding of a phenomenological psychology that necessarily coexists with an experimental, scientific psychology. In the Netherlands, Linschoten is particularly appreciated for his last book, published posthumously. That volume, Idols of the Psychologist, took a critical look at phenomenological psychology and its pretensions while simultaneously acknowledging that a phenomenological outlook is a necessity for beginning any kind of experimental investigation. Most commentators on this book considered Linschoten a convert from phenomenology to experimental psychology, but have either ignored his earlier, substantive work or have not seen the importance of the intellectual context for his final work. By examining his life and the full extent of his voluminous writings, this book demonstrates Linschoten's importance for the development of psychology in the Netherlands and beyond. It will shed new light on the life and work of Johannes Linschoten as well as the Dutch school of phenomenology and its postwar contributions to psychology in Europe and North America. Furthermore, for the first time, this book brings together important aspects of Linschoten's life with his prodigious output. It demonstrates how his life and work created a unique psychology that deserves to be continued and developed.

Verburgt, Lukas M. (ed.),
The Early Years of Mind: Making Contemporary Philosophy and Psychology. 432 pp. 2025:3 (Oxford U. Pr., UK) <736-107>
ISBN 978-0-19-286929-6 hard ¥25,168.- (税込) GB£ 88.00
The Early Years of Mind offers a panoramic overview as well as in-depth accounts of the first decades of Mind - one of the leading philosophical journals since almost 150 years. Founded in 1876 by Alexander Bain, it soon published some of the best new work in Anglophone philosophy and psychology, containing contributions from major and once well-known but today largely forgotten authors, from Herbert Spencer to Bertrand Russell and from J.M.E. McTaggart to E.E. Constance Jones. Mind's ambition was to provide a platform for study and discussion of the scientific status of philosophy and psychology, whose intellectual and professional standing and boundaries were yet unsettled. A focus on the contents of Mind in the first forty years of its existence not only helps unearth a revealing historical picture of the major topics, themes and traditions that dominated philosophy at the turn of the nineteenth century, including evolutionary thinking and the rise of idealist and analytic philosophers. It also makes it possible to recognize their relevance to present-day endeavours. Mind's contributors addressed issues that still (or, sometimes: again) concern us today: What is the relation between philosophy and psychology? Should philosophers be knowledgeable of the latest scientific advances, and if so, how? What is the significance of philosophy for the natural and exact sciences? And what for society? Last but not least, a close look at Mind under George Croom Robertson and G.F. Stout offers a forceful reminder of the prominent role of women philosophers in Britain and America, participating in philosophical and psychological discussion despite numerous constraints. Bringing together a diverse team of eminent and emergent scholars, this pioneering volume tells the fascinating story of Mind's early years and, in so doing, sheds light on larger questions about the history of philosophy and psychology at a time of disciplinary self-experimentation.

Merskin, Debra L.,
Sigmund Freud: A Critical Introduction to Media and Communication Theory. (A Critical Introduction to Media and Communication Theory 13) 184 pp. 2024:8 (P. Lang, SZ) <736-1103>
ISBN 978-1-4331-3120-2 hard ¥29,594.- (税込) SFR 118.00
ISBN 978-3-0343-4993-2 paper ¥10,533.- (税込) SFR 42.00
Sigmund Freud's theories and clinical practices focused primarily on individuals. As such, they are rarely considered when critiquing collective behavior or symbolic re-presentations. However, as the founder of depth psychology - a field of study that considers how unconscious components of the human experience influence psychological conditions - Freud understood the collective nature of thought and behavior. While his ideas are not typically a perspective applied to the study of media and popular culture, of audiences, or of content creation, once unpacked through a psychoanalytic lens, Freud's theories shine a bright light on human motivation and expression. This book is the first presentation of his ideas within this context. It is primarily an introduction to Freud and his theories intended for a communication studies audience. In addition to summarizing Freud's major concepts, how/when/if they are taught in psychology programs, and the resultant "Freud Wars," this book offers examples of application of his ideas to cinema, advertising, public relations, and other forms of expression and recommendations for future research. There are implications and applications to the everyday world as well for anyone interested in how theories of human development, beginning with childhood personality construction through adult sexuality, repression, and expression, can be understood through a contemporary lens. "Of all of the contentious and oft-misconstrued figures in the history of ideas, few provide such a thorny and frustrating subject as Sigmund Freud. In this short-butsubstantial book, Deb Merskin gives us a considerate and approachable understanding of Freud's work. She begins with a biographical sketch of Freud, builds on this foundation to outline the full spectrum of Freud's theoretical interventions. With the basic rhythms and motifs established, Merskin then combines all of these elements to develop a symphonic sense of what Freud's ideas can contribute to communication and media studies, with emphases on social theory, film theory, advertising, political communication, media psychology, and cultural studies. Here is a true introduction to Freud's ideas as they relate to communication and media studies." -David W. Park, Lake Forest College
