Empathy and Political Reasoning: How Empathy Promotes Reflection and Strengthens Democracy. (Elements in Political Psychology) 75 pp. 2025:3 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <741-785>
ISBN 978-1-009-64360-3 hard ¥14,076.- (税込) GB£ 49.99 *
ISBN 978-1-009-64361-0 paper ¥4,787.- (税込) GB£ 17.00 *
How do individuals make up their mind about politics? This question has sparked a vigorous debate in the study of political behavior for the last few decades. Some scholars contend that citizens can and should engage in political reflection, while others highlight biases in human political reasoning that make reflection impossible. This Element is about the conditions under which citizens can be motivated to transcend their egocentric biases and engage in reflection. Rather than asking whether citizens are capable of reflection, it shifts focus to a more productive question: how to motivate reflection. Firstly, it argues that (situational) empathy for the other side can inspire citizens to think reflectively about politics. Secondly, the Element proposes that deliberative institutions have the potential to evoke empathy for the other side in individuals. Thirdly, it draws on experimental and qualitative data from Belgium, Chile, Ireland, and the UK to test the theoretical expectations.

Durkin, Mark A.,
The COMPASS Model in Criminal and Forensic Psychology. (Emerald Points) 152 pp. 2025:2 (Emerald, UK) <741-663>
ISBN 978-1-83549-557-5 hard ¥12,870.- (税込) US$ 60.00 *
Traditional approaches in the Criminal Justice System have focused on societal causes of crime, addressing them through punitive measures with mixed efficacy. Recent shifts toward positive psychological interventions aim to improve recidivism but often overlook the role of compassion. The COMPASS Model in Criminal and Forensic Psychology demonstrates how a compassionate approach, informed by positive psychology, can offer a more effective strategy in reforming criminal behavior. The Durkin COMPASS Model offers a groundbreaking theoretical framework for criminology and forensic psychology, integrating compassion and positive psychology with evidence-based practice to facilitate desistence from crime. It capitalizes on the strengths central to positive psychology, fostering hope and well-being, while its compassion element emphasizes empathetic understanding and self-healing. Durkin adopts a holistic perspective, considering an individual's complete background, including trauma and personal strengths, rather than focusing solely on the crime. Designed for practical implementation, the COMPASS Model equips practitioners with tools to reduce recidivism, support offender rehabilitation, and contribute to their overall well-being, marking a significant shift towards nurturing a pro-social identity as a means of crime reduction. The COMPASS Model in Criminal and Forensic Psychology serves as a crucial resource for criminal justice practitioners, policymakers, academics, and advocates, offering innovative, evidence-based strategies from compassion and positive psychology to transform offender rehabilitation and inform systemic change in the criminal justice landscape.

Giving Birth to a Subject: Transition to Motherhood as an Embodied & Technologically Mediated Experience. (Sociocultural Psychology of the Lifecourse) 381 pp. 2025:2 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <741-368>
ISBN 978-3-031-77235-1 hard ¥34,811.- (税込) EUR 149.99
This book analyses how women navigate their personal worlds during a life stage of intense changes and ruptures, within a complex and rapidly changing sociocultural context of a post-socialist society. The transition to first-time motherhood is considered a unique phase in adult development, bringing about an abundance of profound psychosocial and bodily changes. This book-length study examines these changes from a first-person perspective, with particular attention to dimensions of personal experience and functioning that are usually neglected in psychological (and even sociocultural) scholarship - embodiment and techno-material mediatedness. To account for the complex and contextualised phenomenon, the author outlines a theoretical framework that connects sociocultural psychology with phenomenology and science and technology studies. This pluralistic and interdisciplinary approach promises to move forward the way we think not only about women's experiences, pregnant and birthing bodies, and medical practices, but also the way we think about subjects, their embodied condition of existence, and their entanglements with socio-material aspects of culture.

Beyond Adaptation: The Unity of Personal and Social Change in Critical Psychology and Cultural-Historical Theory. ((Post-)Critical Global Childhood & Youth Studies 4) 254 pp. 2024:11 (P. Lang, SZ) <741-1330>
ISBN 978-1-63667-687-6 paper ¥12,155.- (税込) SFR 50.00
This book discusses transformative approaches to psychology, social work, and education. Addressing these disciplines' entanglements with oppressive structures, the contributors aim to reconcile individual support with social justice. In current times of accelerating crises, professionals often see only few opportunities to influence the conditions of their work. Thinking and acting beyond adaptation, authors from seven countries provide inspiration for researchers, practitioners, and students who want to be more than brokers of a broken system. Cultural-Historical Theory is a powerful framework that can depict the dynamic of individual minds in society. Building on this, Critical Psychology has formulated an elaborate theory of human agency. Linking individual and social change needs such theorizing. This volume is a rare intellectual exchange by scholars drawing on these traditions. An alternative to both control science and abstract criticism, it inquires the capacity to act. The editors took part in organizing the Summer School Critical Psychology in Berlin, which inspired this volume.

Forgotten Streams in the History of 19th-Century German Psychology. Volume 1: Empirical, Romantic, and Idealist Psychologies. (Theory and History in the Human and Social Sciences) 228 pp. 2025:3 (Springer, GW) <741-1333>
ISBN 978-3-031-80719-0 hard ¥34,811.- (税込) EUR 149.99
The 19th century was a defining era for psychology, rich with an intellectual diversity that shaped modern thought but which remains largely overlooked. The roots of 20th century thought can be traced to the 19th century, when a mechanical worldview took hold, society grew increasingly secular, modern urban metropolises emerged, and evolutionist ideas reshaped the understanding of nature's developmental principles. Throughout this century, the natural sciences extended beyond their traditional limits, influencing and reshaping the human, moral, and social sciences, among which psychology was especially impacted, as this transformation sparked profound debates on the very possibility of a science of the soul. Forgotten Streams in the History of 19th-Century German Psychology recovers the vibrant roots of psychology in empiricism, romanticism, idealism, phenomenology, among other streams of thought that explored consciousness, the soul, and the self before experimental psychology took center stage. Unlike the standard view, this book invites readers to reconsider psychology's history, revealing a complex landscape that questions the simplistic story of a linear path toward empiricism. Through profiles of significant yet forgotten thinkers, this work uncovers how their ideas contributed to discussions of the unconscious, mind-body duality, and inner experience. Written by leading scholars, each chapter offers a unique window into an intellectual movement that continues to influence debates in psychology, philosophy, and beyond. Essential for historians, psychologists, and anyone curious about psychology's deeper origins, Forgotten Streams is an indispensable reference that fills an important gap, enriching our understanding of psychology's complex and multifaceted development.

Presidential Age: How and Why Normal Cognitive Aging Impairs Chief Executives. 104 pp. 2025:3 (Springer, GW) <741-1337>
ISBN 978-3-031-80834-0 hard ¥11,601.- (税込) EUR 49.99
This book on presidential age is not about Alzheimer's Disease and associated pathologies of the aging brain. It is instead about the normally aging brain. Brains don't simply develop and maintain their functionality into older adulthood unless otherwise impaired by neurocognitive disease. Were this the case, this book might be about leveraging prodromal biomarkers of neurodegenerative diseases to screen prospective presidential candidates. Instead, the normal decline age brings to all human brains begs a different type of book-and a broader and more blanketed warning about electing increasingly older presidents.

Youth Development in Context: Integrating Multiple Informants to Assess Behavior. (Springer Series on Child and Family Studies) 137 pp. 2025:3 (Springer, GW) <741-1338>
ISBN 978-3-031-80548-6 hard ¥32,490.- (税込) EUR 139.99
This book investigates the most common approach to assessing behavior in youth development. It explores use of multiple informants who each observe youth in the social contexts that typify their everyday lives, including parents, teachers, peers, and youth themselves. The volume characterizes the most common outcome from taking this assessment approach - the discrepant results or estimates about behavior that informants' reports often produce. Grounded in the Operations Triad Model - the foundational framework for contemporary scholarship about discrepant results - this book focuses on strategies that discrepant results compel scholars to implement, namely strategies for integrating these results. The book highlights that the integrative strategies scholars have historically used prevent them from capitalizing on the valid data that discrepant results often contain. This authoritative, thoroughly resourced, and methodologically rigorous book provides readers with integrative strategies that align with scholarship in youth development. In doing so, the book provides readers with a paradigm for testing competing data integration strategies, using a sophisticated suite of Monte Carlo Simulation and measurement validation tools that are applicable to a host of assessment scenarios in scholarship on youth development. Key areas of coverage include: Use of multiple informants to assess behavior in youth development. The frequent observation of discrepant results when assessing behavior in youth development.Theoretical models for explaining discrepant results in behavior assessments and how they inform strategies for integrating assessment data.Key distinctions in the assumptions that underlie the use of competing integrative strategies.Application of Monte Carlo Simulation strategies for testing competing integrative strategies.Implementation of measurement validation strategies that put competing integrative strategies to the test, within data conditions that typify research in youth development. Youth Development in Context is an essential resource for researchers, professors, graduate students as well as clinicians, therapists, and other professionals in developmental psychology, social work, public health, pediatrics, family studies, child and adolescent psychiatry, school and educational psychology, and all interrelated disciplines. Hypnosis in the Realm of De-Sign. 224 pp. 2025:1 (Springer, GW) <741-1342>
ISBN 978-3-031-81295-8 hard ¥32,490.- (税込) EUR 139.99
This book presents a new theoretical framework for the study of hypnosis based on an innovative epistemological approach called De-sign. This approach transcends the opposition subjectivity-objectivity and presents itself as a metaknowledge that integrates design and semiotics and proposes a phenomenological method of inquiry that helps overcome some of the traditional challenges to create theoretical models to explain hypnosis. Both hypnosis and De-sign are critical practices against absolute notions of reality, especially regarding time, space, and otherness. Both of them consider the importance of epistemological notions such as imagination, feelings, and desire, that modern science commonly marginalizes. Hypnosis and De-sign implicate people in partnership, being critical to a dominant notion of control. Thus, the book presents in-depth discussions on major themes of hypnosis, bringing clinical practice closer to the reflections brought by De-sign. Hypnosis in the Realm of De-Sign shows how to integrate semiotic systems, pragmatism, and De-sign principles to analyze actual hypnotherapeutic experiences. As with every De-sign situation, each patient requires a unique therapeutic strategy and approach that is individually appropriate for them. The author thereby encourages therapists to become de-signers, working with - not for - their subjects to create a context within which their subjects can awaken their therapeutic potential. By doing so, patients can then bring into focus that which could be, rather than focusing on that which is.

Wendt, Alexander Nicolai,
What is Psychology About? The Philosophical Foundations of its Subject-Matter. (Palgrave Studies in the Theory and History of Psychology) 382 pp. 2025:3 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <741-1347>
ISBN 978-3-031-81111-1 hard ¥34,811.- (税込) EUR 149.99
This book examines the subject-matter of psychology against the background of the philosophical problem of reality. It locates the core of the issue in the dualistic conception of reality which, it argues, has left psychologists with a conceptually constrained choice of subject-matter, for instance between experience and behavior, not to mention philosophically incomplete ways of discussing its possible subject-matters. By drawing on the work of philosophers and philosophically informed psychologists, the book seeks to explain and advance the long-standing debate by introducing the under-utilized perspective of ideal-realism. The historical origins and trajectory of ideal-realism are recovered from the late 18th century through the early 20th century. The exposition of this tradition, especially in the little-known German Realpsychologie, provides theoretical psychology with a philosophically founded understanding of its subject-matter.
