Rousselle, Duane, Psychoanalytic Sociology: A New Theory of the Social Bond. 216 pp. 2024:9 (Bloomsbury Academic, UK) <743-1148>
ISBN 978-1-350-41018-3 hard ¥23,936.- (税込) GB£ 85.00 *

Singularities are isolated social bonds. They lack a common language with one another and express themselves with certainty. Strangeness is therefore no longer constitutive to the social bond. It has become elevated to the very principle of social order. Our social world has become strange. Duane Rousselle explores this new theory of the social bond while accounting for recent developments in the cultural logic of capitalism. Each chapter offers a different and compelling perspective on broader phenomena and notions of estrangement within civilization through explorations of the evil empire, rogue states, the master-slave dialectic, and the new status of knowledge that is at stake in the era of singularities. This book offers enriched and novel dialogues across Freudian and Lacanian psychoanalysis, Marxist and anarchist theory, and theoretical sociology with illustrative contemporary examples. Psychoanalytic Sociology argues that our current social crises are exemplified by the way social groups project their own inhumanity onto others. Written in Russia during the outbreak of the Ukrainian crisis, it prophesied new uncompromising and aggressive wars, the confluence of 'foreign agent' laws and 'cancel culture.' The war among singularities runs very deep and exists on every scale (e.g., interpersonal, institutional, and cultural). This book navigates this strange new social world and invents a language capable of articulating it.

Kikkawa, Toshiko / Kriz, W. C. / Sugiura, Junkichi et al. (eds.), Transferring Gaming and Simulation Experience to the Real World. (Translational Systems Sciences 43) 254 pp. 2025:3 (Springer, GW) <743-1197>
ISBN 978-981-9627-54-7 hard ¥34,811.- (税込) EUR 149.99

This book focuses on how to connect the gaming experience to the real world. Looking back at the history of the Simulation and Gaming field, it has offered the solution to social problems such as policy making, decision making for business strategies, education and training, environmental issues, urban planning, or disaster awareness. In other words, Gaming Simulation always has had a close connection to the reality. The interconnected modern societies nowadays have become even more complex and ambiguous, as the UN SDGs goals show. Gaming is one of the suitable tools to suggest ways to achieve our goals in a world of uncertainty. Learning starts by experiencing games and their effects in a safe environment. An important part of the gaming simulation process are methods for a transfer of the game-based learning to and an application within reality. However, connecting the experience to reality is not always facile for all the participants, no matter how comprehensive the debriefing is. In addition to debriefing, further transfer methods and conditions have to be implemented in order to create a real change of behavior and systems. The book's authors tackle the challenge by introducing concrete practices and offering various hints for readers struggling to solve a similar issue. In addition, when applying the experience of gaming, we have to carefully consider several ethical issues, which are also covered in this book.

Chiesa, Lorenzo / Johnston, Adrian, God Is Undead: Psychoanalysis for Unbelievers. 320 pp. 2025:5 (Bloomsbury Academic, UK) <743-122>
ISBN 978-1-350-51604-5 hard ¥21,120.- (税込) GB£ 75.00
ISBN 978-1-350-51605-2 paper ¥7,036.- (税込) GB£ 24.99

The undead are neither alive nor dead. They are animate yet non-living. In God Is Undead, Lorenzo Chiesa and Adrian Johnston contend that true unbelief today sees the divine precisely as exemplifying such undeath. In God Is Undead, Chiesa and Johnston delve into and deepen the insights of both Freudian and Lacanian psychoanalysis as regards unbelief. This analytic perspective reveals that modern atheisms appealing to a scientific worldview as an antidote to orthodox religious faith end up as heterodox theisms of Nature, Reason, Knowledge, or even the Market itself. They ironically place new gods of their own atop the graves of the traditional gods of old. They likewise forget the religious influences underlying modern science. One of the most important and novel contributions of God Is Undead is its gesture of dignifying unbelief as something that is able to contain multitudes. Far from a unified, homogeneous, and flatly bleak position, irreligiosity can come in many forms whose convergences and divergences contain possibilities for creatively thinking and living differently. This book shows such variegated non-belief in action. We have two unbelievers vigorously disagreeing with each other about fundamental ontological matters, thereby bringing to light critical questions going to the very heart of any unbelief whatsoever: Can an atheism, as thoroughly atheistic, ever believe in or be certain of itself? What is the role of agnosticism, and specifically of an agnosticism strengthening (rather than contrasting with) atheism, in all this? How might different unbelievers become what Freud calls "comrades in unbelief" without erecting new gods in the process?

Hook, Derek, Whiteness at the Abyss: A Lacanian Reading of 'White Anxiety'. (The Palgrave Lacan Series) 122 pp. 2025:1 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <743-1267>
ISBN 978-3-031-78508-5 hard ¥9,280.- (税込) EUR 39.99

'Whiteness' is an omnipresent term within research on race and racism. This book differs from existing conceptualizations by adopting a psychoanalytic line of approach and by directing its attention to a particular socio-historical instantiation of whiteness-the investments, fantasies and fears apparent within (post) apartheid South African contexts. It foregrounds the notion of 'white anxiety', which is conceptualized not only via notions of psychical temporality, but with reference to the dystopian visions of the future, ideas of inter-generational guilt, and fantasies of demise. To posit an imagined 'end to whiteness' is not, of course, an uncontroversial gesture; the closing section of the book surveys the key themes-antisemitism, white Nationalism, the trope of the race traitor-in online attacks the author was subjected to. This compelling work will appeal to all those with an interest in psychoanalytic approaches to race and racism, and to anyone working in the areas of critical race and whiteness studies.

Cornejo, Carlos / Hernandez Maturana, Cristian (eds.), Forgotten Streams in the History of 19th-Century German Psychology. Volume 2: Late Idealist, Cultural, and Phenomenological Psychologies. (Theory and History in the Human and Social Sciences) 244 pp. 2025:4 (Springer, GW) <743-1420>
ISBN 978-3-031-82847-8 hard ¥37,132.- (税込) EUR 159.99

The 19th century was a defining era for psychology, rich with an intellectual diversity that shaped modern thought but which remains largely overlooked. The roots of 20th century thought can be traced to the 19th century, when a mechanical worldview took hold, society grew increasingly secular, modern urban metropolises emerged, and evolutionist ideas reshaped the understanding of nature's developmental principles. Throughout this century, the natural sciences extended beyond their traditional limits, influencing and reshaping the human, moral, and social sciences, among which psychology was especially impacted, as this transformation sparked profound debates on the very possibility of a science of the soul. Forgotten Streams in the History of 19th-Century German Psychology recovers the vibrant roots of psychology in empiricism, romanticism, idealism, phenomenology, among other streams of thought that explored consciousness, the soul, and the self before experimental psychology took center stage. Unlike the standard view, this book invites readers to reconsider psychology's history, revealing a complex landscape that questions the simplistic story of a linear path toward empiricism. Through profiles of significant yet forgotten thinkers, this work uncovers how their ideas contributed to discussions of the unconscious, mind-body duality, and inner experience. Written by leading scholars, each chapter offers a unique window into an intellectual movement that continues to influence debates in psychology, philosophy, and beyond. Essential for historians, psychologists, and anyone curious about psychology's deeper origins, Forgotten Streams is an indispensable reference that fills an important gap, enriching our understanding of psychology's complex and multifaceted development.

And the bioeconomics (functional costs and benefits) have been important constraints. Now we are facing a mounting survival crisis that may determine the future of life on Earth. We need to make a major course change, utilizing our insights into these important influences. Here is a review, and a 'prescription.'

ISBN 978-0-19-882793-1 paper ¥1,969.- (税込)

Very Short Introductions: Brilliant, Sharp, Inspiring How did our brains change over the course of evolution, and what did it mean for our ancestors? Why do we behave the way we do today? Evolutionary psychology is the only framework that allows us to fully understand the nuances of humans' motivations, emotions, cognitions, and behaviours. Our bodies have evolved over time, and so too have our brains. How we respond to situations emotionally, our thoughts, our motivations, and our behaviours have a deep heritage based on the successes of our ancestors in meeting their survival or reproductive needs. In this Very Short Introduction Maryanne L. Fisher and T. Joel Wade unfold the intriguing idea that our brain, like every other body part, has been shaped over time by natural and sexual selection. Fisher and Wade consider the contexts in which our ancestors thrived and explore how people today think and act using an evolutionary compass. This research-oriented exploration addresses diverse topics, organised into chapters on the principles underlying this approach, survival issues, group alliances, aggression, family dynamics, and mating strategies. It touches on a broad array of topics like fears, disgust, attraction, sibling conflict, friendship, and homicide. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. ISBN 978-3-031-63660-8 hard ¥34,811.- (税込) EUR 149.99

Thinking and doing through a diverse set of theories, methodologies and writing registers, this edited collection explores the potential of creative disruption as psychosocial praxis. Moments of disruption - planned and unplanned - are everywhere in the fragile terrain of society, from micro-level gestures of resistance and refusal at the local scale to globally disruptive phenomena such as climate and ecological breakdown and pandemics. The authors of this collection ask instead: how might the disruption we encounter open up junctures for creative and ethical psychosocial engagement? This collection introduces new and emerging voices in psychosocial scholarship from within and beyond academia and the clinic, which brings unique perspectives that have been historically discarded, marginalised or neglected within mainstream academic knowledge production. The contributors examine disruption as a catalyst for discomfort and discontent, drawing from black feminism, whiteness studies, theories of racialisation, queer theory, disability studies, psychoanalysis, postcolonial studies, and more. The authors explore questions of power, knowledge, memory, embodiment and the potential of multidisciplinary approaches in nurturing disruption.

Elbert Decker, Jessica, Motherless Daughters and Female Monsters: Androcentric Fantasy in Ancient Greek Myth and Freudian Theory. 221 pp. 2024:12 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <743-11>
ISBN 978-3-031-78065-3 hard ¥27,848.- (税込) EUR 119.99

This book is a feminist analysis of Greek myth and tragedy that reimagines the structures of Freudian theory. The objective of this analysis is political-by revealing the structures that undergird patriarchal oppression, feminist thinkers can work to transform these symbolic constellations through the work of sabotage, parody, and imagination. Jessica Elbert Decker attempts here to read Freudian theory through a wider lens of Ancient Greek culture, since our contemporary philosophical and social culture has inherited many of its symbolic structures (e.g., patriarchy, binary thinking). The major argument of the book is that our Western philosophical, social, and symbolic systems are, as they were in the Ancient Greek world, suffused with a set of values that reflect one version of masculinity and androcentrism, and that those values are destructive to human beings as well as the non-human world, including other beings.
