Mental health technology companies have become some of social media's biggest advertisers and a prime source of endorsement deals with influencers, many of whom are also professional therapists. In Mood Disorder, Holly Avella explores how digital therapeutic technologies, including popular mood-tracking apps and algorithmic social media, work to construct branded psychiatric identities and calibrate the mood of contemporary mental health discourse and practice. Through more than five years of mixed-method, qualitative research, Avella investigates what happens when media platforms are given diagnostic authority. Moving beyond critiques of mental health media effects and misinformation, Avella honors the coping functions of therapy tech while probing the moody histories of diagnostic mental health, from hysteria photos to the aestheticized meds delivered to your door. Ultimately, this book asks readers to consider if more equitable and just forms of care are possible in these spaces.

This captivating book tackles one of humanity's most profound questions: what is consciousness, and could we ever recreate it digitally? From ancient myths of immortality to cutting-edge neuroscience, this book takes readers on a fascinating journey through our evolving understanding of the mind. Written in clear, accessible language for curious minds everywhere, it reveals how we've progressed from discovering the first neurons to mapping entire brain networks with revolutionary technologies like fMRI and brain-computer interfaces. At its heart, however, this is a book about consciousness itself: the mysterious experience of being aware, feeling, and thinking that makes us human. It unpacks the leading theories of consciousness and shows why solving this puzzle is crucial to building truly intelligent machines or achieving digital immortality. It also explores the complex relationship between human and artificial intelligence, comparing how our brains learn and think with how modern AI systems operate. While today's AI can beat us at chess and generate human-like text, it lacks the rich inner experience that defines consciousness. Beyond the science, the book also confronts the real challenges of mind uploading: the staggering technical hurdles, the biological complexities of the brain, and the profound philosophical questions about identity and what makes you "you." This thought-provoking exploration will change how you think about consciousness, technology, and what it means to be human in an age of AI. Whether you're fascinated by the future of AI, intrigued by the mysteries of the mind, or simply wondering if immortality might one day be possible, this book offers an engaging and enlightening journey into the deepest questions of our existence. It is an essential read for AI researchers and engineers, neuroscientists and consciousness researchers, futurists and technologists, along with anyone wanting to learn more about the future of AI.

Following the critically acclaimed Solution Focused Practice and Mental Health Crisis: Inclusive Support Towards Safety and Hope, this unique new book from Nick Perry provides an in-depth application of Solution Focused Practice (SFP) to the role of the Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) in England and Wales.

The book explains how SFP assists AMHPs to interview 'in a suitable manner' and provide a more deliberative, strengths-based perspective on decision-making as well as to practice according to the guiding principles of the newly amended Mental Health Act. With contributed chapters on how the approach supports anti-racist practice, how it can change the experience of people being assessed and the wider implications for AMHP training courses, the book starts with a full transcript of a solution focused conversation and is jam-packed with practice stories showing the approach in a range of settings, including police custody, medical hospitals, psychiatric hospitals and the community.

It is a must-read for AMHPs committed to providing useful, least restrictive interventions and any other professionals working in a mandated setting keen to promote autonomy and choice for people in mental health crisis.

This new edition of Mindfulness and Acceptance in Sport provides sport psychology practitioners, coaches and students with practical guidance for implementing mindfulness and acceptance approaches in their work with athletes. In this fully revised edition, highly experienced practitioners share their working methods, exercises and cases to inspire the sport psychology profession.

This second edition of Mindfulness and Acceptance in Sport presents a collection of applied perspectives, methods and techniques that allows students, researchers, practitioners and coaches of sport psychology to be inspired, to adopt the methods into their own practice, and to adapt methods and techniques to the specific culture of their country and of the sport they work in. The book has a very clear, applied "how-to" focus. Rather than simply describing mindfulness and acceptance methods, Mindfulness and Acceptance in Sport specifies how to use these methods and the keys to making them work and the potential pitfalls.

Mindfulness and Acceptance in Sport is key reading for applied sport psychology practitioners, sport psychology students, as well as coaches and managers working in elite sport and talent development.

Creative~Relational Inquiries in the Wild accompanies researchers and writers drawn to the possibilities of what 'creative~relational inquiry' might offer. Departing from the well-trodden paths of traditional, procedural qualitative methodology, each chapter explores how creative~relational inquiry invites an engagement that is intricate, intimate, and emergent. The volume meets the intrepid inquirer/reader by providing lively exemplars from those who are 'doing' creative~relational inquiries in and for their research. Each author approaches creative~relational inquiry differently: there is no one way to do a creative~relational inquiry and there is no one to say who is or is not doing it 'correctly'. The book will enable readers to find their own ways of plugging the creative~relational into their research projects.

Exploring the psychology of everyday behaviour, this book uses an evolutionary perspective to explain experiences that many people share and can easily relate to.

This book focuses on topics that are applicable to what people do and experience in their daily lives. Why do we choose the partners we do? Why do we laugh? Why is play so essential for children? Why are we drawn to stories, music, and sweet food? The book examines such topics as sex and relationships, humour, family dynamics, religion, and media and technology through an evolutionary psychology perspective, looking deep into the ancestral past to uncover the adaptive roots of modern life. In so doing, it reveals how ancient psychological mechanisms continue to shape daily choices, pleasures, fears and relationships. Each chapter can be read as a standalone topic or as part of a bigger exploration to understand why we do what we do.

Written in an accessible style and covering common human behaviours and experiences, this is the ideal book for undergraduate students in introductory modules, as well as more specific courses on such topics as Psychology of Sport, Psychology of Humour, and Psychology of Music. It will also appeal to anyone with an interest in psychological science looking to understand themselves and others.

Suicide: The Basics is a concise, accessible, and evidence-informed introduction to the study, prevention, and lived experience of suicide.

Written for students and readers approaching the topic for the first time, this book explains key areas in suicidology such as theories, risk and protective factors, and suicidal crisis processes. Rather than reducing suicide to diagnoses or statistics, it explains how suicidal crises develop through pain, meaning, relationships, and moments of feeling trapped. Bridging science and humanity, it shows not just what suicide is, but how it unfolds and where intervention can make a real difference. By considering methods of assessment, treatments, and community and policy strategies that help, the author explores how age, culture, and identity shape both vulnerability and recovery. He provides a compassionate and straightforward overview of suicide with short sections, illustrative tables, end-of-chapter summaries, and annotated reading lists.

By including practical ways to find help, support others, and pursue further study, this book will appeal to students of counseling, nursing, philosophy, psychology, public health, social work, and sociology, as well as readers with a general interest in the topic of mental wellbeing and suicide prevention.

This book brings together Gilles Deleuze and Jacques Lacan, two thinkers widely considered to be incommensurable, in order to reconcile two positions also often considered to be incommensurable: sexual difference theory and gender theory.

Sexual difference theory, represented here by Luce Irigaray, maintains that sexual difference has ontological primacy; gender theory, represented by Judith Butler, argues that sexual difference is merely an effect of discursive power. After explaining this apparent theoretical impasse, the book turns to Deleuze's use of psychoanalysis to offer an account that accommodates the concerns of both frameworks. It then applies this account to contemporary debates about gender identity and embodiment through what the author calls Deleuzian sexuation. Ultimately, the book contends that sexual difference is the central idea linking Deleuze and Lacan, and that Deleuzian sexuation holds sexual difference and gender theories together.

A novel perspective on a crucial yet intractable problem, this book will be of interest to students of Continental philosophy, psychoanalysis, feminist theory, queer theory, trans studies, and gender studies.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia in older adults, and although significant efforts have been made to find the mechanisms and biomarkers which would enable early detection and treatment, the disease remains a major scientific and clinical challenge. A number of therapeutic interventions have been developed to target the pathology believed to play a role in the course of the disease, with varying success, and this book, Therapeutic Trials in Alzheimer's Disease: Where Are We Now?, explores past and present clinical trials in AD based on pharmacological and non-pharmacological strategies. The book is divided into 6 parts. Part 1 focuses on pharmacological strategies aimed at the two proteins associated with AD, amyloid-? and tau; Part 2 discusses a broad range of therapeutic strategies, including metal-targeting agents and antioxidants. Part 3 deals with repurposed drugs, particularly antidiabetics and lipid-lowering therapies, and in Part 4, the challenges, advances, and therapeutic effects of stem cell and gene therapies for AD are detailed and discussed. Part 5 debates the therapeutic effects of non-pharmacological approaches, particularly ketogenic diets and supplements, as well as the benefits of physical exercise, yoga, and acupuncture. Finally, part 6 discusses the benefits of brain stimulation, and the usefulness of imaging techniques, and their ability to assess responses to treatment. Providing an overview of efforts to date in the attempt to address AD, the book will be of interest to all those involved in the research and treatment of Alzheimer's disease.

A wealth of guidance is available on supporting clients with lived experience of disability - yet there is little available that focuses on understanding the first-hand experience of psychologists who themselves identify as having a disability. This book responds to this gap in literature by providing narratives of psychologists with disabilities and exploring how their disability interacts with their experience of working in clinical practice.

The accounts represented within this book are varied, reflecting the wide range of experiences and challenges that psychologists with disabilities may encounter during their practice. Reflecting on the contributing authors' lived experience, chapters provide guidance on a range of topics related to navigating disability in clinical practice. This includes, but is not limited to:

* Normalizing mental health and disability

* Self-disclosure of disability, inside and out of the therapy room

* Late diagnosis of disability and adapting to shifts in identity

* Managing disability and unpredictability, including fluctuations in conditions

* Disability and intersectionality

* The role of autonomy

Providing a much-needed exploration of the experiences of psychologists who identify as having a disability, this will be an essential read for any mental health practitioner who resonates with this experience, or for any practitioner who wishes to better understand and support colleagues with disabilities.

Dissociation, Compulsion, and Language Games in Psychoanalysis investigates the strangely underexplored topic of the phenomenology of language in psychoanalytic dialogue-as impacted by trauma, addiction, and other compulsive aversions.

Drawing on the long tradition of phenomenology and exploration of the importance of language in philosophy, as well as the author's extensive clinical experience, this book explores how language acts as the interface of human connection and how, without really understanding what it is and how it functions, true communication and connection cannot be achieved. The author looks at how we can use the concept of family resemblance in the way we use words to come to an understanding of each other, so that even if we don't use language in exactly the same way, we can find common ground that let's us understand and empathize with each other.

With rich clinical vignettes and a fresh new application of philosophical ideas, this is key reading for all psychoanalysts and psychotherapists.

How dementia affects those living with the condition, their carers, and their advocacy

In Listening to Dementia, Emily K. Abel demonstrates that recognizing the voices of people with dementia can fundamentally alter our understanding of both their lived experience and the discourse surrounding their care. She focuses on the memoirs of twelve individuals living with the condition who became advocates on their own behalf. The authors challenge reigning understandings of dementia while operating within familiar cultural notions.

Abel addresses topics including the impact of stigma and discrimination on the lives of people with dementia, their portrayal in the vast advice literature for carers, the divergence between the views of carers and those of the people they care for, the reasons some people with dementia seek to end their lives before the disease reaches the final stage, and how dementia advocates react to carers' attempts to manage behaviors they consider troubling and inappropriate.

Listening to Dementia breaks new ground both by analyzing the memoirs of people with dementia who became advocates and by discussing the administration of antipsychotic medications to manage behavior in the community, where the great majority of people with dementia live.

Elements of Reparation excavates of psychic violence and the human potential for healing - an undertaking that is at once theoretical, clinical, and existential.

Drawing on object relations theory, existential-phenomenological psychoanalysis, and post-Jungian thought, Brent Potter explores how destructiveness and creativity coexist in the psyche. What has been added is not ornamentation but further descent: two new chapters emerge from the fault lines of collective trauma, spiritual crisis, and cultural fragmentation. There is greater attention given to the sacred - how it appears, how it is defended against, and how it might function as a container for psychic integration. Also addressed is the violence of surveillance, disembodiment, and technocratic flattening that characterizes our historical moment. This new edition offers a return to the wounds with a fuller vocabulary, a steadier hand, and the conviction that reparation is never final, never complete, but always possible.

Elements of Reparation will be of great interest to psychoanalytic clinicians, depth-oriented therapists, and analytic scholars. It will hold appeal for students and scholars of trauma studies, religious studies, political psychology, cultural analysis, existential psychotherapy, post-Jungian theory, spiritual crisis and mental health, and the psychology of violence and healing. It also intersects with the interests of communities seeking integrative responses to trauma, including clergy, chaplains, and professionals in restorative justice and social work settings.

Zoological Lacan examines the importance of Lacanian theory for understanding animals by situating them within Lacan's thought, relying on the occasional and fleeting (but surprisingly consistent) statements on animality throughout his work.

Teddy Duncan Jr. considers questions about animal subjectivity and the epistemological challenges that animals present, suggesting that a return to Lacan can resolve many of the lacunas within our comprehension of them. Using the Lacanian triad (the symbolic, the imaginary, and the Real), Duncan develops a "Zoological Lacanianism" that not only delineates a psychoanalytic understanding of animal interiority but also supplies fresh insights into animal behavior and subjectivity, exceeding Lacan's direct comments on animality. This book extends Lacan's thought by providing new theoretical interventions on topics such as animal interiority, communication, guilt, jouissance, trauma, the unconscious, and human-animal love. While carefully avoiding collapsing the subjectivity of animals and humans, animals are shown to be psychoanalytic subjects. The book also reflects on the significance these areas can have for other fields such as philosophy, psychoanalysis, and animal studies.

Zoological Lacan announces-to the study of animals, psychoanalysis, and philosophy-that a new theory has emerged on the scene, one that warrants substantive and sustained engagement.

This book develops a relational-neurodevelopmental framework for understanding how early experience becomes procedurally encoded, organised, and transmitted across generations.

Drawing on three decades of clinical practice, it brings psychoanalysis, attachment theory, infant observation, and neuroscience into close dialogue with the lived moment of therapeutic work. At its centre is the concept of cumulative relational trauma, offering a way to understand developmental harm as emerging through ongoing relational processes rather than discrete events. Structured in four parts, the volume addresses key clinical domains, including enactment, sexuality, power, forensic settings, and psychosis, while remaining grounded in practice. It shows how change unfolds through sustained relational engagement, affect regulation, and reparative processes over time.

Written for psychotherapists, clinicians, and scholars, this book offers an integrative, ethically attuned account of development that honours complexity.

Bringing together psychological, cognitive, and sociocultural perspectives, this book offers a new way of understanding personal information management (PIM) as an emotional as well as practical activity. It explores how everyday acts such as saving, sorting, retrieving, and discarding information are tied to memory, identity, responsibility, care, and control.

Affective PIM examines the emotional dimensions of PIM, showing how what we save, delete, organise, and search for is shaped as much by feeling as by function. Organised in three parts, the book moves from conceptual foundations to empirical case studies and narratives from everyday life and periods of transition, and then to future directions, including AI- enabled automation, wearable technologies, and user- centred design. Reflection prompts throughout support critical engagement and help readers connect the discussion to their own information practices. The result is a theoretically grounded and accessible account of how PIM is lived, felt, and negotiated in contemporary digital life.

The book is intended for researchers and students in library and information science, information behaviour, digital literacy, human-computer interaction, and user experience design. It will also be valuable to designers, educators, and other readers interested in the human side of personal information, digital life, and the changing relationship between people, technologies, and everyday information practices.

On Not Fitting In: Psychoanalytic Rem(a)inders offers a distinctive meditation on contemporary psychoanalytic theory and practice through a series of brief, thought-provoking essays.

Through interconnected sections exploring the symptom, desire, satisfaction, love, and the cure, Childs weaves together classical and recent perspectives in psychoanalysis. Drawing on a rich tapestry of references, from Freud and Lacan to influential analytic thinkers like Bruce Fink, Adam Phillips, Paul Verhaeghe, and Mari Ruti, alongside philosophical and literary sources, the book presents a mosaic of insights into identity, subjectivity, and social belonging. Deliberately fragmentary in composition, it can be read either sequentially or as individual pieces, offering readers multiple entry points into psychoanalytic thought.

On Not Fitting In: Psychoanalytic Rem(a)inders will be of interest to psychoanalysts in practice and in training, academics and scholars of psychoanalysis, and readers interested in the intersection of psychoanalysis with contemporary life.
