Rother, Bernd, Global Social Democracy: Willy Brandt and the Socialist International in Latin America. 434 pp. 2022:5 (Lexington Books, US) <675-967>
ISBN 978-1-66691-138-1 hard ¥29,620.- (税込) US$ 132.00 *

This is first book in English dealing with the history of the Socialist International-the international alliance of social democratic parties-during the presidency of former German Chancellor Willy Brandt from 1976-1992. This book is based on thorough studies in numerous European and Latin American archives. It tries to avoid a Eurocentric view, giving equal importance to the Latin American and the European actors. It takes a fresh look at party diplomacy, a new kind of international diplomacy that was introduced by Willy Brandt in the field of international relations in the 1970s and 1980s. This study brings new insights in European as well as Latin American history of this time. It has a special focus on the role of Social Democrats (European as well as Latin American) in the civil wars in El Salvador and Nicaragua in the 1980s, and on its repercussions on domestic policies in Germany, Venezuela etc., and on the relations of those countries with the U.S. government.

アジアにおける奴隷制と奴隷的拘束 1550~1850年-強制労働のグローバルヒストリーに向けて
Ekama, Kate / Hellman, Lisa / Rossum, M. v. (eds.), Slavery and Bondage in Asia, 1550-1850: Towards a Global History of Coerced Labour. (Dependency and Slavery Studies 3) 250 S. 2022 (de Gruyter, GW) <675-790>
ISBN 978-3-11-077612-6 hard ¥21,865.- (税込) EUR 89.95 *

The study of slavery and coerced labour is increasingly applying a global perspective. And yet, a dual Eurocentric bias remains: Slavery primarily brings to mind the images of Atlantic chattel slavery, and studies of work have either outright or implicitly been based on a model of northern European wage labour. This book constitutes an attempt to re-centre that story to Asia. With studies spanning the western Indian Ocean and the steppes of Central Asia to the islands of South East Asia and Japan, and reaching from the 16th to the 19th century, this book follows coercion in diverse forms. That makes it possible to trace both similarities and differences ? as well as connections ? between systems of coercion, from the early regulation of sales to post-abolition labour contracts. Deep empirical case studies, as well as comparisons between the chapters, all show that while coercion was entrenched to a number of societies, it was so in different and shifting ways. This book thereby not only makes the history of slavery and coercion in Asia a connected story, but also offers steps for how to carry out global studies of a phenomenon as varying, manifold and subject to debate as coercion.

Laybourn, Keith, The Football Pools and the British Working Class: A Political, Social and Cultural History. (Routledge Studies in Modern British History) 296 pp. 2022:7 (Routledge, UK) <675-1075>
ISBN 978-0-367-70172-7 hard ¥38,907.- (税込) GB£ 135.00 *

This book is the first national study of the football pools in Britain which examines the politics and culture of the gambling on the football pools. It charts the rise of the football pools, focusing upon its rapid growth from the 1920s and its prolonged decline in British culture from the 1990s, partly as a result of the National Lottery. The book explores how this new gambling activity became a significant leisure opportunity for the working class - a way to feel that the individual skill of the punter could lead to the winning of some life-changing jackpot cheque being presented by a sporting personality of celebrity. Dominated by Littlewoods, and other large commercial companies, the weekly filling-in of the coupons was considered to be a safe form of investment, guaranteed by the integrity of the pool companies, rather than some seedy gambling operation. The Football Pools and the British Working Class looks at different elements of the football pools from what attracted people to this form of gambling to how the industry developed and adjusted to the suspension of the football fixtures in 1936, and the bad winter of 1962-3. Above all, it examines the deep hostility that surrounded the filling in of the football pools arising from the National Anti-Gambling League, religious groups, the football authorities and MPs. This book will appeal to all those interested in the history of British football and 20th century British working class culture.
