Collaborative Historical Research in the Age of Big Data: Lessons from an Interdisciplinary Project. (Elements in Historical Theory and Practice) 75 pp. 2023:2 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <696-883>

Living with Machines is the largest digital humanities project ever funded in the UK. The project brought together a team of twenty-three researchers to leverage more than twenty-years' worth of digitisation projects in order to deepen our understanding of the impact of mechanisation on nineteenth-century Britain. In contrast to many previous digital humanities projects which have sought to create resources, the project was concerned to work with what was already there, which whilst straightforward in theory is complex in practice. This Element describes the efforts to do so. It outlines the challenges of establishing and managing a truly multidisciplinary digital humanities project in the complex landscape of cultural data in the UK and share what other projects seeking to undertake digital history projects can learn from the experience. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.

Guldi, Jo,
The Dangerous Art of Text Mining: A Methodology for Digital History. 436 pp. 2023:2 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <696-884>
ISBN 978-1-00-926298-9 hard ¥22,792.- (税込) GB£ 80.00 *
ISBN 978-1-00-926299-6 paper ¥7,689.- (税込) GB£ 26.99 *
The Dangerous Art of Text Mining celebrates the bold new research now possible because of text mining: the art of counting words over time. However, this book also presents a warning: without help from the humanities, data science can distort the past and lead to perilous errors. The book opens with a rogue's gallery of errors, then tours the ground-breaking analyses that have resulted from collaborations between humanists and data scientists. Jo Guldi explores how text mining can give a glimpse of the changing history of the past - for example, how quickly Americans forgot the history of slavery. Textual data can even prove who was responsible in Congress for silencing environmentalism over recent decades. The book ends with an impassioned vision of what text mining in defence of democracy would look like, and why humanists need to be involved.

Retz, Tyson,
Progress and the Scale of History. (Elements in Historical Theory and Practice) 75 pp. 2022:10 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <696-885>
ISBN 978-1-00-901176-1 paper ¥4,843.- (税込) GB£ 17.00 *
The idea of progress is a product of historical thinking. It is a bold interpretation of history that combines understandings of the past, perceptions of the present and expectations of the future. This Element examines the shifting scale of this past, present and future configuration from antiquity to the present day. It develops five categories that reveal the conceptual features of progress together with the philosophies of history in which they have been enmeshed, from temporal outlooks that held no notion of progress to universal histories that viewed progress as a law of nature, from speculation on the meaning and direction of history to the total rejection of all historical constructions. Global in scope and conversant with present-day debates in the theory and philosophy of history, the argument throughout is that the scale on which we conceive history plays a determining role in how we think about progress.

Have Marxian ideas been relevant or influential in the writing and interpretation of history? What are the Marxist legacies that are now re-emerging in present-day histories? This volume is an attempt at relearning what the “discipline” of history once knew ? whether one considered oneself a Marxist, a non-Marxist or an anti-Marxist.
