Edith Penrose's Legacy: Shaping Economics, Management, and Political Economy. 276 pp. 2025:1 (Routledge, UK) <737-186>
ISBN 978-1-032-95909-2 hard ¥38,610.- (税込) GB£ 135.00
Edith Penrose is best known for The Theory of the Growth of the Firm, originally published in 1959, but she made major contributions in other fields, including patents, the oil industry, and development economics. This book explores her work and legacy, not just on economics - she was the founding Head of Department of Economics at SOAS University of London - but also on the related fields of management and political economy where her contribution has had significant impact.Penrose challenged the conventional wisdom of economics by opening up the 'black box' view of the firm to explore what goes on inside, in particular how resources are managed and renewed to influence growth and innovation. Her analysis was cognisant of the wider political economy context in which firms operate, recognising the different impact of large international firms on developing and developed countries. Penrose's work has shaped modern theories of strategic management including the resource-based view of the firm and the dynamic capabilities approach. The chapters in this volume, from leading economists and management scholars, cover a range of topics including innovation, collaboration between firms and universities, and the practice and consequences of share buy-backs, highlighting the value of a Penrosian perspective and the extent of her legacy. This book will be relevant to students and scholars of economics, management, and political economy. This book was originally published as a special issue of International Review of Applied Economics.

Geoeconomics of the Sustainable Development Goals. (Frontiers of Geoeconomics, Geopolitics and Sustainability) 338 pp. 2025:2 (Routledge, UK) <737-187>
ISBN 978-1-032-65580-2 hard ¥38,610.- (税込) GB£ 135.00
In 2015, the United Nations introduced its very ambitious 2030 Agenda, known as the Sustainable Developmental Goals or SDGs. The SDGs provide a comprehensive list of goals and targets to address social, economic and environmental issues. Different areas of expertise are brought together, examining the main challenges associated with the effects of "climate change" and the broader scope of the SDGs through the lenses of the geo-economics and geopolitics of sustainability. The book sheds light on the growing connections between the economic and financial fields and their impact on defining the international order and its economy. It examines the importance of trade and economic integration in promoting sustainable development and achieving the SDGs.The role of supranational organisations like the United Nations, the World Trade Organisation and the IMF in supporting the SDGs within the context of the world's most advanced economies and those less developed; the influence of economic diplomacy and geopolitical rivalries on progress towards the SDGs; the changing global balance of power and the significance of technology and innovation; as well as the role of emerging and less developed economies in enabling sustainable development. The book offers insights into practical issues linked to theory and applied frameworks, underscoring the significant challenges associated with sustainable development, the global economic and political reality, and how political tensions affect the global economy. The book supports students through the established disciplines of economics, finance, political science, and law and provides academics with new research and theory-building tools.

Legal and Political Foundations of Capitalism: The End of Laissez Faire? (Economics as Social Theory) 256 pp. 2025:4 (Routledge, UK) <737-188>

"Institutions matter", is a common refrain amongst all economists - including many who have proposed progressive alternatives to free market fundamentalism. However, this sentiment does not go far enough. This book draws principally on the Original Institutional Economics and American Legal Realist traditions to propose a theory of legal institutionalism or institutional political economy. By arguing that society is a political community it challenges the private law versus public law or state versus markets distinction. Focusing on property, money and credit, constitutional law, and corporations the book argues that laissez faire has never existed and that "state intervention versus de-regulation" or "market failures versus free markets" are false dichotomies. The book proposes the need to engage with legal-economic theory and history to understand what institutions are, what economic regulation means, law's intrinsic connection to the economy, and the distribution of power relations within capitalism. This book will be of interest to readers of economics, law, public policy, international and development studies, and all those seeking to explore progressive alternatives in this period of multiple crises.

Reason, Ideology, and Democracy: A Study in Entangled Political Economy. 290 pp. 2024:10 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <737-192>
ISBN 978-3-031-69839-2 hard ¥30,598.- (税込) EUR 129.99
Democratic political systems are often thought to be preferable to all others for supporting liberty. Around the world, nations that are more democratic tend to be freer across various aspects of life and human experience. This book undertakes a social scientific analysis of this claim and finds it to be wanting. The reality of democratic systems does not adhere to popular rhetoric. One of the key reasons for this is that our system is an entangled system, one in which the realm of the political and commercial are so intertwined that they cannot be easily separated. Businessmen have political interests, and politicians have commercial interests. The implication of this entanglement is that alleviating the problems that emerge in democratic systems is not a simple matter of rolling back damaging interventions. Due to the logic of entanglement, returning to a "free market" is not possible in most cases. The authors pull economics back to its classical roots to analyze the social orders that best allow people to live together. The world is not constantly aiming at placidity, as the prevailing economics of equilibrium would have us think. We live in a world of change and turbulence, so our social science requires a framework that deals with this turbulence robustly. Classical economists beginning with Adam Smith sought to uncover which forms of human association allowed us to live better together. The authors explain Smith's observations, asking the same sorts of questions of readers today. Because the baseline assumption of entanglement does not allow one to divide the world so clearly into two distinct structures, the authors parallel Smith's approach, focusing on forms of association rather than political or commercial structures. Focusing on human association, the authors help readers uncover the manifold structures humans have devised that allow them to tame the turbulence and live lives more harmoniously with others.

Towards a Relational Theory of the Firm: Relational Governance, Cost and Stakeholder Business Models. (Relational Economics and Organization Governance) 129 pp. 2024:11 (Springer, GW) <737-194>
ISBN 978-3-031-71607-2 hard ¥25,890.- (税込) EUR 109.99
This book lays the groundwork for a relational theory of the firm as a network of stakeholder resources and interests. Drawing on the author's earlier publications on relational economics as the political economy of a global cooperative economy or stakeholder capitalism, it explores the governance and managerial implications of a relational economy for firms, while also critically revisiting the traditional and resource-based view of the firm. In turn, it explains concepts such as relational governance, relational costs, relational spaces, rent from cooperation, and shared value creation, as well as a dynamic and process-oriented relational business model. The book discusses the epistemological and methodological prerequisites of a relational theory of the firm and addresses their theoretical taxonomy. A relational theory of the firm is a work in progress; the book represents an invitation to join this theoretical and empirical undertaking.

ISBN 978-1-032-81522-0 hard ¥38,610.- (税込) GB£ 135.00
This book explores the causes of the current economic crisis, evaluates the foundational principles of capitalism that contribute to crises, and investigates how an Islamic economic and banking system could play a role in fostering global stability. It includes theoretical and empirical analysis and assesses the resilience of the Islamic economic system and Islamic financial institutions in the face of economic and financial crises, with a particular focus on Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) member countries. Furthermore, the effects of these crises on income and wealth distribution are discussed. The book compares Islamic and conventional economics in response to economic crises, both across countries and financial institutions and provides a brief analysis of financial crises from a theoretical point of view, examining various approaches. It addresses the issue of the relevance of all these theories in relation to the present crisis and draws useful policy implications. Thereafter, it discusses how the Islamic financial system could serve to mitigate the occurrence of a financial crisis, since the prohibition of riba, maysir, and ghaarar transactions offer a solution to the financial crisis from speculative bubbles and crash. It also discusses some of the challenges facing the Islamic finance industry. This is a useful guide for researchers and advanced students of Islamic Economics and Finance.

Macroeconomic Theory: Fluctuations, Inflation and Growth in Closed and Open Economies. 2nd ed. (Springer Texts in Business and Economics) 479 pp. 2025:1 (Springer, GW) <737-176>
ISBN 978-3-031-70176-4 hard ¥23,536.- (税込) EUR 99.99
Macroeconomics is the application of economic theory to the study of the economy's growth, cycle and price-level determination. Macroeconomics takes account of stylized facts observed in the real world and builds theoretical frameworks to explain such facts. Economic growth is a stylized fact of market economies, since England's nineteenth-century industrial revolution. Until then, poverty was a common good for humanity. Economic growth consists in the persistent, smooth and sustained increase of per-capita income. A market economy shows periods of expanding and contracting economic activity. This phenomenon is the economic cycle. The price of money is the amount of goods bought with one unit of money, in other words, the inverse of the price level. Determination of the price level, or the value of money, is a fascinating subject in a fiat money economy. Revised and updated, the second edition introduces a number of new topics, including the New Keynesian IS Curve, Real BusinessCycles, and the Consumption Asset Pricing Model, as well as updated end-of-chapter exercises.

The Great Inflation Resurgence: Why Inflation Returned in the 2020s and What to Expect Next. 186 pp. 2024:8 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <737-177>
ISBN 978-3-031-64781-9 hard ¥7,058.- (税込) EUR 29.99
This book explores why inflation surged globally in the 2020s, where we are heading and what lessons we can draw from it. Following a decade of too-low inflation, inflation suddenly surged in 2021-22 to its highest levels in 40 years in the US and Europe. The book introduces a simple economic framework and adopts a global perspective to compare the inflation experiences across the US, Europe, and Asia. Among the key questions the authors tackle is 1) why the West suddenly experienced surging inflation when their central banks had been fighting too-low inflation in the 2010s, 2) why so few economists saw the inflation resurgence coming, and 3) why China now faces deflation. The great inflation resurgence has taught us several key lessons, namely that inflation is a global phenomenon with local characteristics, that economists should rely more on broad economic thinking, and less on models when large shocks occur, and finally that fiscal policy is a major differentiator. The authors, a central banker and an economist on the 'buy side', offer key lessons for both central banks and financial markets while anticipating where inflation might be headed.

This book brings together a number of well-known post-Keynesian scholars who discuss the impact of monetary policy on both personal and functional distribution of income, and even the gendered effect of monetary policy. The impact of monetary policy (changes in interest rates) on income distribution is increasingly being recognized as a legitimate channel of monetary policy transmission. The study of this new channel - once the purview of post-Keynesian theory - is an important step in understanding the complicated and myriad effects of central bank policy. The chapters in this book raise a number of other questions about monetary policy, that are still underdeveloped in the economic literature. This book is essential reading for students, scholars and policy makers interested in economic policy, monetary theory, income distribution and post-Keynesian economics. The chapters in this book were originally published in the Review of Political Economy.

Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) is a promising approach to understanding our complex world and addressing contemporary social issues. But what is it? This textbook aims to straightforwardly explain what PPE is to those who have never heard about it. The book uses a unified PPE approach which differs from a simple concatenation of moral philosophy, political science, and economics so that the reader can appreciate PPE's distinctiveness. It makes salient the virtues of PPE as a unified approach through a study of two liberal institutions that have been fundamental in making the world a better place: governments and markets. By the end, the reader will be confronted with the difficulty of finding only one right answer to unprecedented questions in a morally diverse society. Hopefully, however, readers will be convinced that the uncertainty of the diversity of our liberal societies is what has made them peaceful and prosperous despite the permanent frustration that results from living in a dynamic and complex world.
