Frangipane, Marcella / Poettinger, Monika et al. (eds.),
Ancient Economies in Comparative Perspective: Material Life, Institutions and Economic Thought. (Frontiers in Economic History) 414 pp. 2022:10 (Springer, GW) <684-232>
ISBN 978-3-031-08762-2 hard ¥23,536.- (税込) EUR 99.99 *
This book investigates the economic organization of ancient societies from a comparative perspective. By pursuing an interdisciplinary approach, including contributions by archaeologists, historians of antiquity, economic historians as well as historians of economic thought, it studies various aspects of ancient economies, such as the material living conditions including production technologies, etc.; economic institutions such as markets and coinage; as well as the economic thinking of the time. In the process, it also explores the comparability of economic thought, economic institutions and economic systems in ancient history. Focusing on the Ancient Near East as well as the Mediterranean, including Greece and Rome, this comparative perspective makes it possible to identify historical permanencies, but also diverse forms of social and political organization and cultural systems. These institutions are then evaluated in terms of their capacity to solve economic problems, such as the efficient use of resources or political stability. The first part of the book introduces readers to the methodological context of the comparative approach, including an evaluation of the related historiographical tradition. Subsequent parts discuss a range of development models, elements of economic thinking in ancient societies, the role of trade and globalization, and the use of monetary and financial instruments, as well as political aspects.

Peddle, Francis K. / Peirce, William S. (eds.),
The Annotated Works of Henry George: The Science of Political Economy. (The Annotated Works of Henry George) 578 pp. 2022:2 (Fairleigh Dickinson U. Pr., US) <684-234>
ISBN 978-1-68393-338-0 hard ¥35,142.- (税込) US$ 163.00 *
Henry George (1839-1897) rose to fame as a social reformer and economist amid the industrial and intellectual turbulence of the late nineteenth century. His best-selling Progress and Poverty (1879) captures the ravages of privileged monopolies and the woes of industrialization in a language of eloquent indignation. His reform agenda resonates as powerfully today as it did in the Gilded Age, and his impassioned prose and compelling thought inspired such diverse figures as Leo Tolstoy, John Dewey, Sun Yat-Sen, Winston Churchill, and Albert Einstein. This six-volume edition of The Annotated Works of Henry George assembles all his major works for the first time with new introductions, critical annotations, extensive bibliographical material, and comprehensive indexing to provide a wealth of resources for scholars and reformers. Volume V of this series presents the unabridged and posthumously published text of The Science Political Economy (1898). George's original text is comprehensively supplemented by annotations which explain his many references to other political economists and writers both well known and obscure. A new index augments accessibility to the text, the critical annotations, and their key terms. The introductory essay by Professor Francis K. Peddle, "Political Economy and the Satisfactions of Wealth," provides the historical, economic, and primarily philosophical context for George's debates with the prominent political economists and thinkers of his time. Henry George, in history books and documentaries, is generally portrayed as a prominent reformer in the Gilded Age, one who ushered in with others the social and economic advances of the Progressive Era in the period from the 1890s to the 1920s. The Science of Political Economy reveals George to be one of the most original and systematic architects of political economy, and its developing self-image as a science, in the nineteenth century, along with David Ricardo, John Stuart Mill, and Alfred Marshall.Henry George wrote The Science of Political Economy in order to correct the many confusions and myths about the nature and definition of wealth, value, and money, as well as the essential assumptions behind efficient production and the moral basis of the distribution of wealth. He defined political economy as the science that treats of the nature of wealth, and of the laws of production and distribution. It is not, for him, a science of human psychology or the twists and turns of political life. George's constructive critiques of previous political economists led to fresh insights about the meaning and the limitations of political economy, about the intriguing relation between wealth and value, and about how the proper distribution of wealth in society ought to be understood as a function of the cooperative character of civilization. Volume V of The Annotated Works of Henry George presents the culmination of his life's work and thought.

J.M.ケインズの行動経済学
Schettkat, Ronald,
The Behavioural Economics of John Maynard Keynes: Microfoundations for the World We Live In. 208 pp. 2022 (E. Elgar, UK) <684-235>
ISBN 978-1-80220-488-9 hard ¥23,646.- (税込) GB£ 83.00 *
Keynes' macroeconomic revolution is based on his microfoundations of economic behavior derived from 'casual' observations but impressively substantiated by rigorous research in behavioral economics and neurology. Ronald Schettkat argues that the allegation of the missing microfoundations in Keynes' theory is false. Instead, both Keynes' theory and behavioral economics relate to humans in 'the economy we live in', differing substantially in their fundamentals from the neoclassical model.Showing that Keynes' micro has much in common with Behavioral Economics, the book starts with the fundamentals ranging from the methodological approach to economics as a real versus an axiomatic science and the consequences for knowledge building methods (interviews, observations, experiments), the rationality and equilibrium concepts to the functioning of markets, before delving into the topics in greater detail.Providing a thorough theoretical grounding in economics, this book will be a discerning read for economists, students of economics, political science, sociology and psychology as well as for the general public.
