A compelling portrayal by the veteran journalist of the lives of farming communities on either side of the U.S.-Mexico border and the surprising connections between them

"Conniff brings her skills and insights to a particularly urgent project: moving beyond the polarizing politics of our current era, and taking a deeper look at how people who have been pitted against each other can forge bonds of understanding." -E.J. Dionne Jr., co-author of 100% Democracy

Winner of the Studs and Ida Terkel Award

In the Midwest, Mexican workers have become critically important to the survival of rural areas and small towns-and to the individual farmers who rely on their work-with undocumented immigrants, mostly from Mexico, accounting for an estimated 80 percent of employees on the dairy farms of western Wisconsin.

In Milked, former editor-in-chief of The Progressive Ruth Conniff introduces us to the migrants who worked on these dairy farms, their employers, among them white voters who helped elect Donald Trump to office in 2016, and the surprising friendships that have formed between these two groups of people. These stories offer a rich and fascinating account of how two crises-the record-breaking rate of farm bankruptcies in the Upper Midwest, and the contentious politics around immigration-are changing the landscape of rural America.

A unique and fascinating exploration of rural farming communities, Milked sheds light on seismic shifts in policy on both sides of the border over recent decades, connecting issues of labor, immigration, race, food, economics, and U.S.-Mexico relations and revealing how two seemingly disparate groups of people have come to rely on each other, how they are subject to the same global economic forces, and how, ultimately, the bridges of understanding that they have built can lead us toward a more constructive politics and a better world.

Trade Unions and Regions: Better Work, Experimentation, and Regional Governance is about the place of workers and their unions in the modern world. It addresses current challenges for unions working in regions and the experiments that may take place at this level of governance. The book addresses pressing questions concerned with the conditions for better work and a humane society. The focus is on the capacities of unions to address questions relating to regional governance, in both supranational and sub-national regions. It examines workers and their unions in a variety of contexts: multinationals, industries, workplaces, and communities. The authors address the experiments that can be initiated by unions, governments, or employers and the ways in which collective organisations engage to address these matters in regional contexts. The analysis takes as a starting point the fracturing and divisions evident in various regions, in Australia, Canada, Mexico, Spain, the United Kingdom, and USA. The contributors propose novel analyses with lessons for unions. It should be of interest to union activists and leaders, political parties, governments, and those who make decisions in and about regions. Researchers and students of labour markets, political mobilisation, and employment relations will take the analyses further.

With a focus on the European labour market, this book seeks to understand how digital transformation affects changes in employee-employer relations. These consequences include shifts in job security and job flexibility as well as alternative work arrangements in the digital economy. This phenomenon has both positive and negative implications for employees and employers.

The book presents a theoretical, conceptual and empirical analysis of employment relations in the digital economy, which are manifested, among others, in flexible or non-standard forms of employment, contract work and a radical shift from position-based to skill-based work.

The approach taken in the book provides researchers and students of economics, business and other social sciences with an overview of interdisciplinary theoretical and conceptual perspectives and frameworks on labour market and employment relations. In particular, it presents a comprehensive range of research on flexible forms of employment in the digital economy. The range of issues covered is also tailored to business practitioners who wish to understand the ongoing changes in employment relations and the emergence of new forms of work as a result of digital transformation. It will also be of value to representatives of labour market institutions involved in implementing new forms of work and employer-employee relationships in Industry 4.0.

Drawing on inspirational stories of neurodivergent entrepreneurs, Entrepreneurship, Neurodiversity & Gender provides insights into their respective journeys, challenges, and triumphs, alongside discussions with their allies and members of their ecosystem. Readers are offered innovations and solutions within the workplace and organisational design, employing both "neurodivergent" and "neurotypical" individuals to enable satisfying career paths for neurodivergent women.

Entrepreneurship, Neurodiversity & Gender shines a spotlight on issues of intersectionality and opens the debate on how we can develop and support the options of entrepreneurship or self-employment that are offered to young people early on in their career. Yolanda Gill and Dinah Bennett aim to explore and foster greater awareness of and support through policy and practice. They also ask how can we ensure that the legal and policy environment does not create additional barriers to opportunities for enterprise and self-employment as pathways to fulfilling lives?

While the working lives of tech entrepreneurs and delivery platform workers seem far removed, both are engaged in digital labor. What unites their experience and allows us to speak of their work under the same umbrella? Is it even possible to talk about digital labor as if it were a single form of work?

Digital Labor explores these questions and critically examines the economics, politics, and experiences of workers in these new modes of employment. Using a novel definition of the term "digital labor," Kylie Jarrett explores unpaid user activity, platform-mediated gig work, and formal employment within the digital media industries, mapping the common features of these varied practices. Applying a critical Marxian lens, the book interrogates the structures of exploitation in this sector, the organisation of the labor process, the dynamics of alienation associated with this work, and the commodification of workers' lives. It also documents the struggle of digital laborers to resist the iniquities and inequalities of their working environments. Ultimately, the book identifies what is specific about this form of labor and, in doing so, offers insight into the nature of work as it is being reconstituted in digital capitalism.

Synthesising an extensive range of studies and sources, Digital Labor offers a comprehensive overview - and a rich critical appraisal - of work in the high-tech economy. It is suitable for students and scholars of media and communication, sociology, labour studies, and anyone interested in emerging forms of work.

Based on interviews with women who were professionals in different fields in Nigeria prior to migrating, The Migration of Professional Women from Nigeria to the UK examines the ways in which professional, middle-class women make sense of their lived experiences, their roles in migration decision-making and their experiences of adaptation in the UK. Drawing on the thought of Mead on the symbolic reconstruction of the past from the standpoint of the present, and employing a feminist approach to qualitative research, the book considers the reflexive construction of women's narratives concerning their lived experiences in Nigeria and sheds light on their decisions to migrate. Using intersectionality and critiquing the concept of "Strong Black Woman", the author analyses participants' narratives of integration, adaptation, and work and family life in the UK. Rejecting the notion of "culture shock" as a means of explaining immigrants' early experiences, the use of a "person-by-situation" approach is proposed to accommodate the nuances of individual narratives.

A rich, theoretically informed study of the narratives of skilled migrants, whose experiences are often subsumed into studies of "African" migration more broadly, this volume will appeal to scholars of sociology, anthropology and cultural geography with interests in migration, gender and the sociology of work and family life.

The Other Job highlights that Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic people do two jobs in most workplaces; there is the job they are paid to do, the one that appears on their job description and role profile. And then there is "The Other Job", that of being the professional minority ethnic person.

This is the job that sits alongside the paid job; the duties at which they absolutely have to excel if they are even going to get a chance to do their paid job at all, let alone be twice as good it at as members non racialised groups, which most of us know is also essential to success.

In The Other Job we will explore this extra unpaid work, why it is expected, how members of racialised groups can manage that expectation and the role of our colleagues and managers in making sure these extra duties aren't undertaken at the expense of our paid work. This book will cover:
  • The concept of "The Other Job"
  • Why employers' managers and colleagues have created the role
  • How leaders should acknowledge and reward "The Other Job"
  • The benefits of success at "The Other Job"

The Other Job is essential reading for anyone dealing with race issues at work. If you are a member of any minority ethnic community, this book can serve as a survival manual. If you work in a diverse team this book will give you insight into the issues facing your minority ethnic colleagues at work and become a better ally.

General Motors (GM)'s attempt to adapt the renowned Toyota production system for its own automotive manufacturing plants had historically produced disappointing results. Why was it not sufficiently successful? This book aims to shed insights into GM's failed attempt through the analysis of work organization reforms and labor-management relations on production-system efficiency.

The book examines collective bargaining agreements between automakers and the United Auto Workers union and the arbitration rulings in retrospect to illuminate the critical role continuous improvement activities initiated by production workers would play in enhancing performance management. It also looks at the impact of the meritocratic system in Japanese auto plants on performance success. As GM begins operations at its new electric vehicle assembly plant, Factory Zero, the book analyses the challenges of such production for both employment relations and workforce deployment.

The book will be a useful reference for those interested in a comparative study of management styles and a better understanding of Japanese manufacturing practices.

This volume examines the transformation of subjectivities following contemporary societal trends with regulatory and administrative authorities targeting human subjectivity with the aim to transform it. It addresses the malleability of human subjectivity through rich qualitative analyses of how different governing attempts are received by the subjects themselves. While the scholarship on governmentality has so far produced an enormously useful body of literature on the 'how' aspect of governing, this book suggests that it has been prone to overestimate the degree to which our subjectivities are open to change. Combining ethnographic sensitivity with more traditional governmentality perspectives allows us to explore how governing attempts 'land' in the terrain targeted-human subjectivity-in actual social contexts, under specific forms of governing and rationality. In doing so, the book makes a distinctive contribution to a second generation of governmentality studies. It will appeal to social scientists with interests in governance, governmentality, social policy and the sociology of work.

Rose Summerfield: Australian Radical outlines the largely forgotten achievements of this overlooked labor union activist and socialist sympathetic to anarchist, feminist, and secularist ideas: a dynamic speaker, who eventually emigrated to Paraguay to live on a utopian commune called Cosme. In this first book-length study of Summerfield, Shone supplements existing scholarship with new information, revealing to a much fuller extent Summerfield's contributions to radical thought, documenting the substantial scope of her contributions to women's rights activism in New South Wales in the 1890s, a topic that has previously been almost completely ignored.

Traditional approaches in the wide field of employment relations focused on a small and clearly delineated set of actors, such as trade unions and employers' organizations, operating within the constraints given by formal, nationally confined institutions. It is becoming increasingly clear that traditional approaches are insufficiently able to account for employment relations processes and outcomes in a world wherein formal institutions are being rapidly transformed and partially dissolved, national boundaries become porous, and the sheer number of actors involved is increasing substantially. A shift in perspective is necessary, past the nationally bounded actor-institution dichotomy, towards an understanding of employment relations as fundamentally mediated by complex and emergent networks that connect a multitude of actors within and between countries.

This volume provides a seminal starting point for such a paradigm shift by applying theories and methodologies from social network analysis to the study of employment relations. It develops a theoretical toolkit of mechanisms that operate within networks and shape employment relations processes and outcomes, such as wages, labour market policies and labour conflicts. It brings together insights from various projects that investigate the structure, functioning and impact of networks in employment relations through quantitative and qualitative methods. It will be of particular interest to students and scholars of employment relations across business and management, economics, political science, and sociology disciplines, as well as those interested in social networks. Managers, trade unions, employers' organizations and state authorities at national and international levels will find it helpful in understanding how networks shape their world.

This book examines an issue of constant concern in the construction industry, that of productivity. Using data from Ghana and South Africa, it presents research into the productivity of local contractors in these countries whilst examining the predominance of labour-intensive production methods.

The book begins by considering the theoretical and conceptual perspectives on labour productivity in the construction industry in the existing literature, before reviewing current productivity measurement frameworks. The book then explores the productivity of labour-intensive public works projects in South Africa and Ghana alongside a general discussion of key factors affecting construction productivity in these countries. Whilst the focus is on road construction, the framework developed can be applied to any number of construction projects to measure, and ultimately improve productivity.

This book is useful reading for researchers and practitioners looking to understand the factors influencing labour productivity in construction at both the industry and the project level, including construction managers, quantity surveyors, cost engineers and project managers.

The book presents a comprehensive treatment of unemployment and economic problems in Jammu & Kashmir. Kashmir, being a conflict-ridden zone, has far less opportunities for employment than rest of the other states. With an underdeveloped industrial sector and the inability of government to create enough jobs, there seems to be no immediate solution. Lack of avenues to engage the youth in meaningful ways result in making miscreants out of many of them. Young populations across the world are generally seen as drivers of socio-economic growth, but in Kashmir, the youth bulge is a problem. Unemployed youths destabilize the economy by being used to create mayhem by the anti-social elements in the region. Underdevelopment and unemployment in Jammu & Kashmir is the manifestation of a mismatch between physical and human resources. This exists when a large segment of the working age population does not possess the appropriate skills and knowledge to be gainfully employed. In addition, lackadaisical and imprudent policies pursued by subsequent governments are the major challenge. A radical shift in its policies, especially in the education sector, is an absolute prerequisite for the birth of a capable workforce. The remedy lies in revamping the education sector by crafting appropriate policies for suitable skills in line with the socio-economic requirements of the society. The book argues the government must think about a long-term plan for unemployed youth and devise a policy to channel the youth bulge constructively.

This book is about the flourishing scrap recycling industry, reconstruction, and state-making in Iraqi Kurdistan within the wider conditions of the war economy, ruination, and state disintegration in Iraq. Through a dialectical relationship between the afterlife and continuity of war over distinct but conjoined landscapes, it examines industrial work, labouring, and statelessness on a frontier territory near the self-proclaimed Islamic State (ISIS). By documenting the advance of the global steelmaking industry, the spread and erosion of selective state sovereignty, and the struggle of dispossessed workers, the book sketches the economic geography of a contemporary market expansion over the northeast of Iraq in a relational and dynamic way.

It encompasses a vast canvas of life worlds of working women in the metropolitan, urban, peri-urban, rural, tribal areas in manufacturing, agricultural, fisheries, sericulture, plantation and service sectors of the Indian economy. It provides nuanced insights into intersectional marginalities of caste, class, ethnicity, religion and gender. The chapters are based on primary data collection and triangulation of qualitative and quantitative research methodologies. It presents the multiple marginalities of Indian women in the globalized political economy of the 21st century. It not only focuses on emerging issues but also suggests evidence-based policy imperatives. This book is an essential read for researchers, scholars, policymakers, practitioners and students of women/gender studies.

Copper King in Central Africa offers a detailed account of the corporate history of the Rhokana/Rokana Corporation and its Nkana mine. Thematically and chronologically organised, it explores the discovery of viable ores on the Northern Rhodesian/Zambian Copperbelt in the late 1920s, which attracted foreign capital from South Africa, Britain and the USA, prompting the development of the Nkana mine and the formation of the Rhokana Corporation in the early 1930s. It follows through the evolution of the copper mining industry up to the re-privatisation of the Zambian mining sector in 1991.
The book ties into a single narrative the disparate themes of corporate organisation, labour relations, and profitability of Rhokana, demonstrating how the firm was, for a time, the most important mining entity in the Northern Rhodesian/Zambian mining industry. Rhokana was both an investment firm on the Copperbelt and a mining company through Nkana mine. Thus, the Corporation was central to the development and profitability of the copper industry in Zambia. Its corporate and labour policies influenced the Copperbelt as a whole. Employing the largest labour force in the mining sector, Rhokana spearheaded the labour movement on the Copperbelt. Its Nkana mine was also the largest producer of copper in the Northern Rhodesian mining industry between 1940 and 1953, and contributed hugely to the war economies of Britain and the USA. Throughout its history, Nkana was also a major source of cobalt. After nationalisation of the mining sector in 1970, Rhokana surrendered its investments in the wider copper industry, but remained central to the Copperbelt's smelting and refining operations, owning the biggest metallurgical facilities in the industry.

This open access book examines the challenges and issues caused by a move to a privatized education system in Sweden. Observing the introduction of the school voucher system and the lowering of academic standards, the move away from objective knowledge towards constructive knowledge is identified as the core reason for Sweden’s current education crisis. The impact of declining education standards on the labor market is also discussed. This book highlight the issues seen in Sweden and suggests policies that can improve education, not just in Sweden but the rest of the world as well. It will be relevant to students and researchers interested in education and labor economics.

This Palgrave Pivot provides an overview of rural labour relations in different regions of the State of Rio Grande do Sul, in southern Brazil. Based on rich ethnographic research, through interviews with a long list of rural workers and union members, among others, the study highlights the toughness faced by salaried workers, who deal with difficulties in union representation and, above all, suffer different types of exploitation. Using a systemic approach, this book connects rural workers, union representation, and labour regulation to examine where society has failed and what can be done to protect rural workers.

This book covers various case studies that cross-compare dichotomies of welfare and economic gains in economies of the global south and how they impact citizens as workers. It reflects on how the reorganization of the developmental state is different than in the past (before the pandemic and lockdown) and how it responds to global challenges while also dealing with limited resources and an unregulated informal economy. It investigates whether the developmental state model in late industrializing economies is still an effective development strategy in terms of governance, institution building, industrial policy, and welfare in the post- pandemic recovery efforts. Using the cases of Sri Lanka, India, Bangladesh, and Brazil, the authors look at how COVID-19 has significantly affected worker conditions and safety hazards, as well as the ability to hold local managers and global companies accountable for upholding national occupational health standards in such conditions. The authors bring together the voices of workers, activists, and health officials to discuss the conditions of possibility for ensuring occupational health standards. In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, such a discussion, in fact, becomes one about ensuring life over death.

Social Contracts and Informal Workers in the Global South draws on the accounts of informal workers, who represent over 60 per cent of the global workforce, to advocate for radically new conceptualizations of state-society, capital-labour and state-capital-labour relations, illustrating how current social contracts may be considered inadequate, irrelevant or unjust.

Bridging social contract theories, both mainstream and critical, and the experiences of informal workers - self-employed, wage employed and sub-contracted - this book sheds light on how many existing social contract models stigmatize informal workers and do not offer legal or social protection. Instead of ideologically driven 'top-down' calls to revitalize the social contract, it advocates for 'bottom-up' initiatives focused on the demands of the working poor in the informal economy.

With a wealth of cross-national evidence, as well as promising case studies, this timely and thought-provoking book will prove vital for scholars and researchers of informal workers and of state-capital-labour relations; and for policy makers negotiating new social contracts.

This open access book provides new conceptualisations on the networks of migrants and their descendants in accessing the labour market. Although references to social networks are common in discussions of migration, simplified ideas of co-ethnic networks often obscure the reality, for example confounding ties with co-ethnics and ‘strong ties’. This open access book addresses key questions about the role of networks in migration contexts, particularly in relation to how migrants and their descendants, access the labour market and develop their employment trajectories over time. Rather than adopting a narrow essentializing ethnic lens, the research presented in this book explores intersectional identities of class, generation and gender. By focusing on the kinds of capital circulating between ties, including the dark side of social capital, the book offers insights into power dynamics and the potentially exclusionary dimension of networks. Taking a long term view, across generations, the research in this book shows how migrants and their descendants mobilize resources to tackle discrimination and enhance their position within particular labour markets. Drawing on robust quantitative and rich qualitative data, this book provides a primary source to students, scholars and policy-makers focusing on issues of migration, social networks, social mobility as well as labour market inequalities.

This volume addresses pertinent questions related to cross-border labor migration and puts forward a "labor market" perspective that goes beyond the national frame of reference prevailing in most of the extant labor market scholarship. In four sections, the volume pulls together a number of key threads: How can we theoretically grasp "global labor markets?" What does existing empirical research reveal about the current state of affairs and the historical development of "global labor markets", provided that they can even be regarded as "global?" How is the emergence of border-crossing labor markets influenced by existing institutions, international intermediaries and social networks? The editors have crafted a coherent volume that enriches our understanding of both globalization and labor markets.

Contributors include: Patrik Aspers, Peter-Paul Baenziger, Martin Buehler, Rebecca Gumbrell-McCormick, Richard Hyman, Sven Kesselring, Eleonore Kofman, Ursula Mense-Petermann, Sigrid Quack, Alexandra Scheele, Helen Schwenken, Karen Shire, Marcel van der Linden, Thomas Welskopp, Tobias Werron, and Anna Zaharieva.

What have jobs really been like for the past 40 years and what do the workers themselves say about them? In What Workers Say, Roberta Iversen shows that for employees in labor market industries-like manufacturing, construction, printing-as well as those in service-producing jobs, like clerical work, healthcare, food service, retail, and automotive-jobs are often discriminatory, are sometimes dangerous and exploitive, and seldom utilize people's full range of capabilities. Most importantly, they fail to provide any real opportunity for advancement.

What Workers Say takes its cue from Studs Terkel's Working, as Iversen interviewed more than 1,200 workers to present stories about their labor market jobs since 1980. She puts a human face on the experiences of a broad range of workers indicating what their jobs were and are truly like. Iversen reveals how transformations in the political economy of waged work have shrunk or eliminated opportunity for workers, families, communities, and productivity. What Workers Say also offers an innovative proposal for compensated civil labor that could enable workers, their communities, labor market organizations, and the national infrastructure to actually flourish.

Seite an Seite.
