In the 1920s and 1930s, the US Office of Indian Affairs (OIA) operated a public health (or "field nurse") program to provide better care for Indigenous communities. Laurel Sanders tells the history of this program, centering on the life of Lula Owl Gloyne. Gloyne was an OIA field nurse, an early Native registered nurse, and a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. Located in Western North Carolina, this Indigenous Appalachian community faced healthcare barriers shaped by racism, segregation, poverty, and poor infrastructure; likewise, Native communities nationwide endured tuberculosis epidemics and other public health crises.

The OIA attempted to improve conditions by professionalizing women's health work within its ranks, but the new field nurses were also agents of forced assimilation, a project with deep roots in the public health field as well as US federal Indian policy. Few field nurses, including Gloyne, were Indigenous themselves. In bringing their experiences to light, Sanders show the overlap between the profession of nursing and the ancient importance of women's leadership, the tensions between federal paternalism and Native nations' goals, and the central role of community connection in public health.

A sobering assessment of the systematic failures of mental health work.

The United States is in the midst of a mental health crisis that cannot be ignored. Its effects are visible in overcrowded emergency rooms, homeless encampments, and frequent police encounters responding to people with serious mental illness. And yet, the many ways we attempt to support people with mental illness-from medical care to housing support to basic hygiene-seem to never take meaningful hold. All this despite the tireless work of professionals who attempt to help people bring together the pieces of a life. The problem is not in any individual effort to ameliorate the problem; it's the many ways these programs fail to work together. For those with serious mental illness, and those who work to ameliorate it, there is no system. There is only mess.

In A Mad Mess, sociologist Owen Whooley uncovers the exasperating barriers, bureaucratic mismatches, and threadbare resources that have made a mess of what should be a supportive system. Set in Albuquerque, New Mexico-a city whose struggles echo communities nationwide- the book reveals the challenges mental health workers face daily, from tedious paperwork to occasional violence. Whooley interviewed mental health workers at two local mental health services organizations, the specialized behavioral health division of the Albuquerque Police Department (APD), and a psychiatric emergency department at the University of New Mexico Hospital. Despite mostly good intentions and sometimes heroic efforts, he shows why this important work so often ends in failure.

Written with deep sympathy and unflinching honesty, A Mad Mess reveals how the lack of a cohesive mental health system obstructs critical care and places roadblocks before front-line mental health workers at every turn. Most critically, for those who suffer from severe mental illness, these setbacks are a constant reminder that the institutions charged with helping them have left them on their own.

Given the increasing number of international older migrants in Europe and the UK, Ageing Migrants' Sense of Home addresses a critical gap in understanding the conditions that facilitate or impede positive ageing in the context of migration, enhancing scholarly knowledge on how processes of identification and sense of belonging to places are experienced by people ageing away from their home countries.

Grounded in long-term ethnographic fieldwork with a community of older Italians in Northeast England, Palladino explores experiences of ageing across borders, feelings of embeddedness in local communities, negotiation of belonging and perceived vulnerability. Highlighting how participants experience private and public spaces, their transnational lifestyles, and relationships with objects of affection, memory, and identity, chapters underscore the importance of affective bonds with places. Place attachment and identity impact health and well-being in later life, and insights into older migrants' subjectivities and life stories stress the social aspects of the environment and the importance of having places to call 'home' in the context of migration.

Drawing critical attention to the diversity of ageing experiences among older migrants and the need for research, practice and policy to respond to their needs both locally and internationally, this is a significant resource for researchers in social sciences, social gerontology, and human geography.

How healthy control subjects in clinical research transformed the practice and labor of science, as told by the Normals themselves.

In the 1950s, the National Institutes of Health were in search of a large, replenishing stream of healthy people to participate in clinical studies. To establish legal sources of test subjects, the NIH signed unprecedented contracts with American colleges, church organizations, and other government agencies, and in the process gave rise to a new type of test subject: the "normal patient." Thousands of them eventually moved into the NIH Clinical Center to live in hospital rooms, eat food prepared in a metabolic kitchen, and follow-or flout-the rules.

The Normals is a groundbreaking account of the NIH Normal Volunteer Patient Program, which has lasted into the twenty-first century. This program harnessed outside organizations in all areas of postwar American life-colleges and universities, labor unions, civic groups, federal prisons, and churches-to recruit research subjects for human experiments. Drawing on thousands of pages of unearthed government documents, oral histories, and personal materials shared by the patients themselves (collected in a new archive), Laura Stark follows five experiments and the people involved, delving into their biographies, their time at the Clinical Center, and the thorny problem of determining who counts as "normal." The "Normals" were not passive objects of study, Stark shows, but active research participants who collaborated with scientists, maintained the laboratories where they served, informed official ethics policies, and bargained to meet their needs.

By taking seriously the pillow fights and the first kisses, the bible clubs and the movie nights that animated the Clinical Center as much as the medical experiments, The Normals brings to life a surprising true story of the origins of our present-day system of human experiment, one that at once explores what it means to work, to serve, to volunteer.

Social Work Practice and Artificial Intelligence for the Common Good is the first university-level textbook to address how artifical intelligence (AI) can be leveraged for the common good without reproducing systemic inequities, whilst also addressing how social workers can develop the digital literacy necessary to evaluate, design, and ethically use AI tools.

Drawing on global case studies, practice-based examples, and a range of pedagogical tools, this book:

  • Introduces AI concepts in plain language for non-technical learners.
  • Explores ethical dilemmas, bias, and the implications of automation in human services.
  • Connects AI use cases to micro, mezzo, and macro practice levels.
  • Provides tools for advocacy, policy engagement, and community-based technology design.
  • Positions social workers as active shapers of emerging technologies rather than passive adopters.
  • Embeds equity, human rights, and the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Code of Ethics into AI discussions.

Offering chapter-critical thinking questions, empowerment-focused activities, reflection prompts, interviews with experts, and support materials, this textbook will be relevant to all students of social work, public policy, and human services. This book will also be of interest to practitioners in nonprofit and public service sectors, and faculty members looking to advance their understanding and infuse AI literacy in their courses.

This book critically examines the effectiveness of the United Kingdom's child and family social work structures and proposes the integration of a trauma-informed approach to improve current social work practice.

The authors argue that current government policies, theoretical frameworks, and practices contribute to structural inefficiencies leaving vulnerable children and families without the support they so desperately need. Drawing on evidence-based research, this book advocates for a trauma-focused, family-centred approach, focusing on interventions that are framed around national and international guidelines to emphasise prevention and healing over crisis management.

This call-to-action book provides social workers, policymakers, caregivers, and legal professionals with a roadmap towards reform and bridges the gap between public perception and professional practice to foster a trauma-informed approach.

This book centres on neurodivergent social workers and how managers and supervisors can ensure they offer neuroinclusive support and guidance in social work teams and organisations.

Explaining key theory, information, and practice regarding neurodiversity to develop understanding, it will also enable practitioners to connect with how neurodivergent social workers may experience social work practice and the impact on their practice and well-being. Using a strengths-based and neuro-affirming perspective, it shows how managers and supervisors can understand, value, and utilise the knowledge skills and values of neurodivergent social workers within teams and services. Offering frameworks, ideas, and advice on specific social work contexts such as supervision, organising, and planning work, enabling a sensory-affirming workplace, as well as developing trusted and empathic working relationships, it will help social work professionals to practice inclusively and anti-oppressively with their neurodivergent colleagues.

This book will be a useful resource for social work managers and supervisors, as well as practice educators and the wider organisation. Neurodivergent social workers will also find the information useful in terms of their own working strategies and approaches.

AI and the Disruption of the Social analyses digital automation and the disruption of both the social and social work, in response to rapid advances in digital technology, automated decision-making, and artificial intelligence (AI) within systems of governance, work, education, and everyday life.

Establishing that we're now entering a 'fourth industrial revolution' driven by late capitalism, this volume approaches technological advancements with a critical lens, exploring how digital automation is disrupting the social, and particularly the lives of the most vulnerable. Contributors suggest that AI systems are amplifying existing socio-economic, gender, and racial biases and stereotypes in our society, suggesting that an ethical and progressive political response is needed to counteract this. Arguing that digital advancements represent a push to commodify human 'intelligence' while advancing state surveillance projects and coercive control, this work explores how automation is transforming the knowledge and skills required to thrive in human services roles and within a civil society.

This book highlights important philosophical, epistemological, ethical, educational, and practice challenges for governments, human services practitioners, and educators and will be of interest to all scholars and students of social work, social policy, and sociology.

Since time immemorial, various racial groups in the US have faced disproportionate burdens and inequalities. The Unprivileged Americans documents how the interconnectedness of institutions and ecological systems perpetuates race-based social disadvantages, especially affecting fragile Black/African American families. Resources, privileges, and influence remain out of reach for these families. The simple fact of one's zip code, serving as a proxy for income and wealth, influences their quality of life, access to the social determinants of health, and the likelihood of a black hole syndemic of oppression that traps thousands of African American families in a fragile state. The book argues that laws, institutional policies, and redlining practices like food deserts have prevented the achievement of 'manifest destiny,' relegating African American citizens to a marginalized sector. This relegation lowers their access to quality education, jobs, wealth creation, health, and wellness, including safe, liveable housing and neighborhoods free of pollutants, with sidewalks and recreational spaces. The social practices favored by white dominance in the 20th century reinforce their marginalization and uphold white supremacy. These practices also increase their vulnerability, leading to low-performing schools, homelessness, involvement in child welfare, or juvenile justice systems. The African American families in the book are mostly at the lower end of the income and poverty levels. Their access to quality-of-life resources and fundamental freedoms is systematically denied. Since the Transatlantic Slave Trade between the 16th and 19th centuries, their history includes sex trafficking, forced family separations, suppression of kinship ties and cultural heritage, legal bans on education and property ownership, and restrictions on autonomy over their own time and care. As Sen (1999) explains, this view demonstrates the connection between freedom and capability and their roles in achieving 'manifest destiny.' The book emphasizes the ongoing, cyclical struggles faced by African American families and explores innovative ways to build community hubs that support low-income, single-parent families involved in child welfare.

This fourth edition of Social Work Practice in Mental Health builds on the underpinning principles of the previous editions whilst reflecting how the context for practice has steadily evolved.

Organised into two parts and 11 chapters, the book focuses on recovery theory, the importance of relationships and an examination of the social context and consequences of illness. It explores the perspectives of consumers and family carers in shaping practice, together with a focus on key skills such as risk assessments, working in a multidisciplinary team, working with trauma, working within a legal framework and spirituality in practice. The book maintains the key theme from previous editions of valuing lived experience, with new content on the NDIS program and its extension to cover people with serious mental health illness, further detailed analysis of trauma, working with individuals and targeted mental health interventions in community settings.

Featuring numerous vignettes and illustrations from practice, this book is both essential reading for social work students and an invaluable resource for practitioners in the fields of social work and mental health.

Port cities of the world are critical nodes for international trade and socio-economic development. Yet they bear several costs, including congestion and pollution, which affect the local environment and population. In certain places, living near the port -together with related industrial and logistical activities -is a synonym of adverse health outcomes, resulting in several diseases and above-average unplanned hospital admissions and mortality. Decades of port-city physical separation have not eliminated such issues, since deep-water facilities, even outside urban cores, impact local populations and reach port and non-port cities through extensive trucking flows. Specific traffic, like cruise, keeps operating within dense urban environments.

This book is one of the first dedicated volumes on such matters, with contributions from scholars on several continents (Europe, Asia, the Americas, Africa, and Oceania). It is highly interdisciplinary, covering geography, history, economics, management sciences, regional science, sociology, public and comparative law, physics, energy and industrial engineering, urban and spatial planning, epidemiology, architecture, biology, and environmental sciences. This volume offers an overview of current environmental and health issues in port cities. It starts by presenting the mitigation and perception of port pollution. Next, it examines the health impacts of ports from a historical perspective and reviews and synthesizes the variety of existing approaches to measure the health impacts of ports and shipping. Finally, it proposes a reflection on multilevel governance and policies.

This book is a comprehensive resource for a wide readership, including academics and upper-level students interested in maritime transport, port management, and sustainability, as well as those in public management, planning, and governance.

Qualitative research methods are essential for addressing central questions arising from clinical and organisational practice. In medicine and healthcare, knowing and scientific knowledge cannot be reduced to what is measurable alone. It also depends on subjectivity, interpretation, clinical reasoning, interaction and ethical judgement. This book develops a coherent methodological framework in which these dimensions are understood as integral to knowledge development rather than as residual or secondary concerns.

The opening chapters establish the philosophical foundations for a qualitative methodology grounded in healthcare practice and distinctly committed to the epistemic impact of subjectivity. Ontological assumptions about health and illness are made
explicit and systematically linked to epistemological and methodological choices. Subsequent chapters guide the reader through the core stages of the research process-from design and data development to analysis and interpretation-consistently demonstrating how underlying assumptions shape methodological strategies and conclusions. Empirical examples illustrate methodological reasoning, critical decisions and common pitfalls. Unlike many introductory texts, this book treats subjectivity, clinical judgement and interpretation not as threats to scientific rigour, but as indispensable
resources for knowledge development. Rather than offering a broad survey of qualitative traditions, it presents a coherent, practice-based approach that affirms the scientific legitimacy of qualitative research on its own terms.

Written primarily for students and researchers new to qualitative methods at bachelor's, master's and doctoral levels in medicine and healthcare, the book also invites more experienced scholars to reflect critically on established methodological practices.

The United States spends substantially more on health care than other wealthy nations, yet it has poorer health outcomes. The Road to Medicare for All: A Call to Action analyzes the dysfunction of the current system and sets forth the solution.

With the question of health care at a pivotal juncture, this book provides a roadmap toward making health care a right, not a privilege. It inoculates readers against the arguments and tactics used by the monied interests to defeat a single-payer system. The Road to Medicare for All explains that the nation was heading in the right direction until the monied interests drove the nation off the road. This book details how the nation can get back on track and finally reach the destination of universal, single-payer health insurance. Nancy J. Altman puts forward a call to action for every American and spotlights how the American people are united in their readiness to improve Medicare and expand it to everyone.

Written by a national leader in research and advocacy, this book is highly informative to both experts and the general public. It is essential reading for students of medical sociology, aging and gerontology, health policy, public health, the politics of US health care, public administration, and political science.

How did India's states confront the challenge of COVID-19? And what insights does this experience offer for future crisis response?

This book explores the varied impacts of the pandemic and the policy responses undertaken across India's states and union territories, bringing together nationwide quantitative analysis with five in-depth case studies of Bihar, Kerala, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal. Moving beyond the numbers, the case studies examine how differences in state capacity, legitimacy, and authority shaped policy responses and pandemic outcomes. Focusing on the first two waves of the pandemic, the volume shows how this early period provides a valuable snapshot of state functioning under crisis conditions-marked by profound uncertainty and limited information.

This volume offers new insight into one of the most consequential global crises of our time. It is important reading for students and scholars of public policy, political science, economics, and South Asian studies. It will also engage policymakers, journalists, and anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the factors that influence how states respond when it matters most.

In the years following the Second World War, the main economic goal of countries, and the main standard by which economies were judged, was the performance of their Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which was defined and measured, following rules created by statisticians and economists who had developed the official national accounts statistics, mostly in the 1930s. The pursuit of the growth of GDP has remained an overwhelming objective for most economists, politicians and international organizations. This book examines several concepts and processes related to economic growth, such as environmental degradation and climate change; income distribution and poverty; a vibrant civil society; and personal happiness and tackles the important question of whether growth itself can create problems that reduce its welfare value to populations.

It weaves together two stories, the first concerns the invention of a statistical index, while the second explores the set of phenomena to which it applies. The author argues that reducing our dedication to economic growth should not be interpreted as stunting the growth of countries' GDPs at their current level, but rather as focusing on paying more attention to the factors that may reduce the social benefits of this growth.

The book addresses an important topic that has recently been an object of study in multiple fields, such as economics, history and ecology. It combines historical, analytical, and policy-oriented approaches into a single study and will attract the attention of scholars, researchers, economists, political scientists, and philosophers, at a time when many traditional policies are being questioned and are under discussion.

India accounts for 20% of the global disease burden despite having only 17% of the world's population, underscoring the critical need for effective health communication. This volume delves into how the world's most populous democracy addresses health communication challenges across its vast linguistic, cultural, and socio-economic diversity, offering vital insights for global health practitioners.

Organized into three parts, the book traces the evolution of health communication in India. The first part establishes theoretical foundations from psychology, sociology, and mass communication that shape Indian practices. The second examines specific diseases-cancer, tuberculosis, leprosy, and COVID-19-through traditional media such as print, broadcast, and film. The third explores cutting-edge digital advancements, including mHealth tools for primary health workers, artificial intelligence, and the growing challenge of health misinformation. Featuring contributions from national and international scholars, practitioners, journalists, NGO workers, and a bureaucrat, the book presents diverse perspectives. Case studies highlight innovative approaches like Positive Deviance for malnutrition, destigmatization campaigns for leprosy, and patient navigation systems that enhance provider-patient communication.

As India confronts persistent health inequities alongside notable achievements, this volume is essential for postgraduate students, researchers, practitioners, policymakers, journalists, and government officials. This will be of interest to those in the fields of health communication, public health, digital health and technology, journalism, media studies, sociology of health and illness, and psychology.

Religion and politics ought not mix, we are often told. But they have always done so, and sometimes with great success, notably in the development of welfare states in the early 20th century, when Christian churches and theologians were constructively, if sometimes critically, in supportive of such initiatives. Today, however, economic and demographic pressures have conspired to place the state under immense pressure, with calls to 'rethink' the welfare state becoming more common. Rethinking, however, demands that we ask some big questions: What is welfare for? What kind of good are we trying to achieve? What kind of being is it whose good we are trying to serve? In this study, Nick Spencer steers the welfare debate away from technocratic concerns. Drawing on the work of four major, twentieth-century theologians, he offers a fresh, concrete, and realistic vision for the vision of welfare at a time when it is badly needed.

Time, Welfare and Society presents a bold reimagining of social policy by placing time, rather than money, markets or behaviour, at the centre of welfare analysis. Challenging the dominance of clock-time, productivity and short-termism, Lee Gregory reveals how welfare systems shape, and are shaped by, the multiple temporalities through which people live.

Gregory demonstrates how neoliberalism and the current polycrisis intensify temporal inequalities and narrow the horizons of welfare, obscuring diverse lived experiences necessary for flourishing. Using time theory, concepts of alterity, equality and citizenship, and policy design, he proposes new conceptual tools, such as time sovereignty and temporal impact assessment, to rethink welfare for a world of uncertainty and urgent social need. The book argues that modern welfare systems ignore the lived rhythms of care, waiting, ageing, uncertainty and generational futures, and instead are built around speed and short-term politics. It outlines and argues for imaginative, rigorous and future-oriented welfare systems that create time for dignity, autonomy, care and collective well-being in uncertain times.

Time, Welfare and Society is an essential resource for scholars and students of sociology, social work and social policy. Social workers and policymakers will likewise benefit from its radical lens.

This illuminating book reveals how place, power and data shape understandings of poverty in a rapidly changing world. Interdisciplinary experts demonstrate that poverty is not only an economic condition, but a spatial, political and environmental one.

Combining various data types, survey data, satellite imagery and historical records, the chapters illustrate how a person's life chances and development outcomes can be determined through geography, via access to infrastructure, environmental risk and governance. They explore key topics ranging from colonial legacies to the use of artificial intelligence, calling for more transparent and context-sensitive approaches to measuring progress, especially where data is scarce or politically restricted. Contributors advocate for a spatially-informed and justice-oriented research agenda that bridges science, policy and practice to build resilience and dignity across diverse communities.

The Geography of Poverty is an essential resource for scholars and students of human geography, development studies and social policy. Governance policymakers and environmental scientists will similarly benefit from its actionable insights and political depth.

This book encourages higher education administrators and educators to think in new ways about how to work inclusively with disabled students and examines the way inherent requirements are used in universities to ensure the integrity of their academic courses.

With the aim of influencing change in higher education policy and practice, the authors explain how inherent requirements, as they are currently deployed, lead to marginalisation and discrimination. Moving away from medicalised, deficit-based views, they introduce cutting-edge theories as alternate ways of knowing and engaging with difference in order to advance inclusive higher education policy and practice.

This indispensable resource is a key reference for higher education researchers, administrators and educators.

Cancer is increasingly recognized as a complex, multidimensional social experience rather than purely a physical or biological disease. This, in turn, highlights the role of communication in cancer-related 'work' such as seeking and receiving a diagnosis, managing disclosure, and incorporating treatment and recovery into everyday life. Although an extensive body of work examining cancer and communication has investigated some of this complexity, the experiences of migrant women in Asia are currently underexplored. In this Element, I argue that the complexity of cancer diagnosis and disclosure for this group can be usefully examined from a perspective of intercultural communication. To support this argument, I investigate instances of intercultural communication that unfolded in a series of focus groups with Filipino migrant domestic workers diagnosed with cancer in Hong Kong.

Leadership in Global Health outlines the essential leadership principles that transform promising health interventions into global movements, offering a timely and compelling blueprint for leaders seeking to drive lasting, scalable change.

Grounded in decades of lessons from global health successes and failures, and illustrated through deeply analyzed, real-world case studies, the book reveals what happens when leadership meets coordinated action. These stories- from the eradication of smallpox and the large-scale delivery of malaria bed nets to the community-based innovations of Ethiopia's Health Extension Program and the lightning-fast COVID-19 vaccine rollout-show how leadership in global health is not one-size-fits-all, but rather dynamic, responsive, and deeply human. In an era where complex health challenges range from emerging pandemics to enduring inequities, the book centers the role of leadership-strategic, adaptive, and collaborative-as the critical engine for scaling health interventions, offering readers not only compelling narratives from the field, but also practical tools and reflections which give the book a forward-looking focus.

Building to offer a roadmap for developing the next generation of global health leaders equipped to thrive in multi-sectoral, rapidly evolving environments, it will be essential reading for students, scholars, and practitioners across Global Health, Public Health, Leadership and Development Studies.

By taking an ecosystem approach to emerging infectious diseases (EIDs), this book gathers the scientific evidence outlining the origins of EIDs to show how a landscape-based ecosystem approach can lead to policy alternatives that draw on the expertise of planning for future pandemic prevention and management.

Global EIDs are one of the world's fastest-growing challenges to local health and are often able to cross large distances. The book targets the substantial "unknowns" surrounding these dangerous characteristics and outlines how current debates about pandemics overlook important characteristics of both the microscopic evolution of viruses themselves, and the social and economic systems through which they move from localized outbreak to global pandemic. Using accessible language, it highlights how planners can help advance and shape policy directions; and how investments in technologies, people, and institutions can be beneficial. Chapters emphasize the importance of creating methods of analysis able to detail very-long-term risks, and therefore suggest actionable and affordable preventative planning today for pandemics predicted decades from now. In doing so, they detail how the intersection of two planning fields of expertise - land use planning and transportation planning - can be enlisted in the fight against future pandemic risk.

Summarizing evidence from past pandemics and using case examples, this book provides future planners with innovative ideas to help the field efficiently understand core health ideas that align with planning expertise. This book is essential for graduate students in urban planning and public health courses, as well as all built environment professionals and practitioners tasked with reducing the risks of the next pandemic.
