貧困から逃れるための戦い
Allawi, Ali A., Rich World, Poor World: The Struggle to Escape Poverty. 688 pp. 2024:4 (Yale U. Pr., US) <714-234>
ISBN 978-0-300-21428-4 hard ¥7,546.- (税込) US$ 35.00 *

A landmark history of the world economic order, exploring how developing countries have fought to escape impoverishment Over the past two decades, experiments in neoliberal economics have opened up a chasm of inequality between the Global South and the West. Development advice from richer nations has led to social upheaval, political unrest, environmental degradation-and even the creation of a new underclass. Brutal extremes of wealth and poverty are now commonplace. Ali A. Allawi traces the evolution of the world economic order from the late imperial era to the present day. Shedding light on continuing controversies, Allawi shows how the process of development has been hindered at every turn, from poor leadership and lost opportunities to widespread corruption. In doing so, he argues that the current neoliberal consensus is only the most recent of a series of failed policy imperatives. Covering issues in the Global South as well as failures in the West, this definitive account offers an impassioned and authoritative call for change.

P.-Y.ドンゼ、J.S.ヨング著 日本の資本主義と企業家精神-徳川時代から現在までの企業史
Donze, Pierre-Yves / Yongue, Julia S., Japanese Capitalism and Entrepreneurship: A History of Business from the Tokugawa Era to the Present. 336 pp. 2024:5 (Oxford U. Pr., UK) <714-236>
ISBN 978-0-19-288747-4 hard ¥25,641.- (税込) GB£ 90.00 *

From being the last country in the world to open its doors to global trade in the 1850s to becoming the second industrialized nation in the 1960s, Japan has experienced impressive economic and social development over the last two centuries. In the last three decades, however, it became entrenched in a long phase of economic stagnation, dropping from second to third place in the global economy, having been overtaken by China in 2010. Inspired by the recent works on the history of capitalism, this history of business shows that the Japanese company was not the product of a unique national culture. Japanese capitalism was largely shaped by a political, economic, and institutional environment, which offered a variety of new opportunities to entrepreneurs, who also played a central role in the process of change. Rural capitalism that formed during the period of national seclusion shifted to industrial capitalism after the opening of the nation to global trade: this form of capitalism was close to those observed in other late industrializing countries, and was characterized by the monopolistic domination of large business groups or zaibatsu during the interwar years. The Second World War saw the emergence of wartime capitalism with the central government as the dominant actor in the economy, and, after 1945, the need to reconstruct the country and catch-up with advanced Western economies gave birth to a new form of capitalism based on a cooperative relationship between business and the state: communitarian capitalism, more broadly known as the Japanese Business System. The liberalization and deregulation brought new changes in the business system, marked by the emergence of financial capitalism in the 1980s and 1990s.

ISBN 978-3-031-39430-0 hard ¥47,076.- (税込) EUR 199.99

It addresses a variety of migration issues involving Europe and the Americas in order to offer new insights on past and future migration and integration policies. The volume comprises multi-disciplinary research from both continents dealing with the economic, political, demographical and sociological impact of migration. This interdisciplinary approach aims to stimulate intellectual dialogue on the migration phenomenon among the international community of scholars in Europe and North and South America. It is divided into three parts, which offer an essential contribution to the issue of migration and aim at better understanding the effect that different forms of migration have had and will continue to exert on economic and social change in receiving countries. This book is a valuable resource for a wide audience including academics, students in the economic and social sciences, and government and EU officials working with migration topics.

Hasselgren, Bjoern, An Institutional Approach to the Goeta kanal: A Nineteenth-Century Infrastructure Mega-Project. 108 pp. 2023:12 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <714-239>
ISBN 978-3-031-44415-9 hard ¥8,235.- (税込) EUR 34.99

This book is based on an institutional evolutionary theoretical view to the Goeta kanal. Canals were the major transport infrastructure system besides roads and maritime transport until railroads were introduced. The canal studied is the Swedish Goeta kanal project during the preparation and construction phase from 1800-1832. Thus, the Goeta kanal, and the canal-era, is seen from a technological, an economic and a political perspective. Comparisons are made with two contemporary major canal-projects; the Erie Canal in the USA (1817-1825) and the Caledonian Canal in Britain (1804-1822). It is argued that the Goeta kanal project, as Sweden's Mega Project of its time, represented an important development step in Sweden as regards learning and innovation and became a starting point for Swedish transport infrastructure projects in the time to come, primarily the railways.

20世紀におけるホテル及びツーリズム産業の発展-西欧からの比較的視点 1900~70年
Larrinaga, Carlos / Strangio, Donatella (eds.), The Development of the Hotel and Tourism Industry in the Twentieth Century: Comparative Perspectives from Western Europe, 1900 - 1970. (Palgrave Studies in Economic History) 155 pp. 2024:1 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <714-240>
ISBN 978-3-031-45888-0 hard ¥35,306.- (税込) EUR 149.99 *

This edited collection explores the pivotal role of the hotel industry in building Western Europe's tourism economy during the 20th century. The book brings together ten contributions focused on the same period, 1900-1970, to offer comparative perspectives from across the region including Italy, Switzerland, France, Spain and Britain. Drawing on historical case studies, chapters illuminate the different factors linking hotels and the broader tourism system including interventions of the public authorities and the State, the importance of private involvement, commercial strategies, the medium-term development of private hotels, hotel entrepreneurship, and the impact of economic crises and wars. By placing differing national approaches taken to the growth of the hotel industry in comparison, the book aims to fill a gap in the historiography of European hospitality and shed light on the wider impact of hotels and tourism on economic development at both a national and regional level. It will be of interest to a range of scholars, including in economic and business history, tourism studies, the history of tourism management, and social history.

1850年以降のグローバル経済
Meissner, Christopher M., One from the Many: The Global Economy since 1850. 2024:2 (Oxford U. Pr., US) <714-241>
ISBN 978-0-19-992446-2 hard ¥21,344.- (税込) US$ 99.00
ISBN 978-0-19-775931-8 paper ¥7,535.- (税込) US$ 34.95 *

Amid a recent surge in arguments that the global economy has begun to "de-globalize," a question has emerged: will globalization survive? In One from the Many: The Global Economy since 1850, Christopher M. Meissner argues that based on the long-run of history, globalization will not be easily vanquished. This brief introduction to the economic history of the global economy and the process of globalization since 1850 tracks and explains changes in international trade, migration, and capital flows over time. All key indicators of globalization rose between 1850 and 1914 during the first wave of globalization. Between 1918 and 1939 the global economy stagnated, suffering a momentous collapse during the Great Depression of the 1930s. After World War II, the global economy re-emerged and integration deepened. A long-run view suggests that rising integration and growth of global economy can generate economic benefits and raise welfare. Given these lessons, the global economy will almost surely survive and integration will continue to grow. However, globalization can only survive if humanity continues to recognize its common interests and the untapped potential of further integration. At the same time, the potential adverse effects of greater integration must be acknowledged, mitigated, and minimized. Meissner's brief history of the global economy offers economics, political science, and history students a new perspective on the history of its subject matter, with an eye on a future where globalization has the potential to persist as an integrative force.

1945年以降のドイツと日本の経済復興
Stokes, Raymond G., Ruins to Riches: The Economic Resurgence of Germany and Japan after 1945. 345 pp. 2024:4 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <714-243>
ISBN 978-1-316-51452-8 hard ¥8,547.- (税込) GB£ 30.00 *

In 1945, Germany and Japan lay prostrate after total war and resounding defeat. By 1960, they had the second and fifth largest economies in the world respectively. This global leadership has been maintained ever since. How did these 'economic miracles' come to pass, and why were these two nations particularly adept at achieving them? Ray Stokes is the first to unpack these questions from comparative and international perspectives, emphasising both the individuals and companies behind this exceptional performance and the broader global political and economic contexts. He highlights the potent mixtures in both countries of judicious state action, effective industrial organisation, benign labour relations, and technological innovation, which they adapted constantly - sometimes painfully - to take full advantage of rapidly growing post-war international trade and globalisation. Together, they explain the spectacular resurgence of Deutschland AG and Japan Incorporated to global economic and technological leadership, which they have sustained to the present.
