Fiet, James O., Religious Doctrines and their Influence on Entrepreneurship. 283 pp. 2024:1 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <714-91>
ISBN 978-3-031-43385-6 hard ¥34,030.- (税込) EUR 139.99

This book explores how religious doctrines influence launching a new venture. It examines 16 Christian denominations and 9 world religions and how they would reasonably be expected to apply more than 20 distinct doctrines each to entrepreneurship. It is not an examination of doctrinal veracity because adherents have confidence in their beliefs. Rather, it examines how they will evaluate the attractiveness of entrepreneurship through the lenses of their beliefs, assuming they receive what they expect. More than 100 years ago, Max Weber pitted Protestantism against Hinduism in a single hypothesis. The current study is a multifactorial examination that covers the world's major religions, as well as most of their doctrines. It is the first comprehensive examination of how entrepreneurs view the world through the lenses of their religious doctrines, which represent the formalization of their most deeply held beliefs.

Akella, Devi / Eid, Niveen L., Justifying Entrepreneurship: A Socio-Economic Emancipatory Strategy. (Palgrave Studies of Entrepreneurship and Social Challenges in Developing Economies) 306 pp. 2023:11 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <714-255>
ISBN 978-3-031-41377-3 hard ¥34,030.- (税込) EUR 139.99

This book on entrepreneurship, compiles a series of evidence-based episodes from the lives of the marginalized and the minority-oriented entrepreneurs to comprehend whether entrepreneurship is truly a socio-economic emancipatory strategy. Varying experiences of entrepreneurs, from different geographical territories, origins and gender are examined under a critical lens to deconstruct its emancipatory potential and appreciate its power in generating human freedom, equal opportunities, and in uplifting the oppressed and suppressed classes globally. In specific the book explores entrepreneurs located in two geographically diverse regions across the world. The social entrepreneurs in the contested region of Palestine and the black and ethnic entrepreneurial group based in Georgia, United States. The book is a planned and purposeful compilation of raw [i.e., in terms of emotions and feelings], untold stories of entrepreneurs who have embraced entrepreneurship to eradicate their harsh realities and subsequently emancipate themselves. The book integrates a critical perspective, encompassing a variety of theoretical frameworks such as critical race theory, critical theory, critical realism and different power modalities and philosophies to investigate the emancipatory potential of entrepreneurship and justify it as a socio-economic emancipatory strategy. This book ventures into the murky and dark waters of entrepreneurship by exploring this concept within the black and immigrant communities, as a collective social entrepreneurship reform movement, female entrepreneurship, informal entrepreneurship operating under occupation, to provide detailed insights on bricolage and other complexed economic issues.

Bouchery, Yann / Corbett, Charles J. et al. (eds.), Sustainable Supply Chains: A Research-Based Textbook on Operations and Strategy. 2nd ed. (Springer Series in Supply Chain Management 23) 490 pp. 2024:2 (Springer, GW) <714-257>
ISBN 978-3-031-45564-3 hard ¥34,030.- (税込) EUR 139.99 *

This book is primarily intended to serve as a research-based textbook on sustainable supply chains for graduate programs in business, management, industrial engineering, and industrial ecology, but should also be of interest to researchers in the broader sustainable supply chain space, whether from the operations management and industrial engineering side or more from the industrial ecology and life-cycle assessment side. As firms become ever more tightly coupled in global supply chains, rather than being large and vertically integrated monoliths, the risks and opportunities associated with activities upstream or downstream will increasingly affect their own wellbeing. For firms to thrive, it is increasingly imperative that they be aware of the economic, environmental and social dimensions of the supply chains they operate in, and that they proactively monitor and manage them. Finding effective solutions towards a more sustainable supply chain is increasingly important for managers, but raises difficult questions, often without clear answers. This book provides students and practitioners valuable insights into these kinds of questions, based on the latest academic research. Chapter "Food Loss, Food Waste, and Sustainability in Food Supply Chains" is available open access under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License via link.springer.com.

Ferreras, Isabelle / Malleson, Tom / Rogers, Joel (eds.), Democratizing the Corporation: The Bicameral Firm. (The Real Utopias Project) 336 pp. 2024:2 (Verso, UK) <714-260>
ISBN 978-1-80429-453-6 paper ¥7,205.- (税込) GB£ 25.00 *

Although contemporary Western societies refer to themselves as "democratic," the bulk of the population spend much of their lives in workplaces that have more in common with tyranny. Gigantic corporations such as Amazon, Meta, Exxon, and Walmart are among the richest and most powerful institutions in the world yet accountable to no one but their shareholders. The undemocratic nature of conventional firms generates profound problems across society, hurting more than just the workplace and contributing to environmental destruction and spiraling inequality.Against this backdrop, Isabelle Ferreras proposes a radical but realistic plan to democratize the private firm. She suggests that all large firms should be bicamerally governed, with a chamber of worker representatives sharing equal governance power with the standard board representing owners. In response to this proposal, twelve leading experts on corporate behavior from multiple disciplines consider its attractiveness, viability, and achievability as a "real utopian" proposal to strengthen democracy in our time.

Illuminating how contexts and recent socio-economic disruptive challenges influence how value is created and maintained from start-up to growth and exit, the chapter authors take a fresh look at creative micro-businesses and SMEs, the processes leading to their formation, developments and their founders. Contemporary Issues in Entrepreneurship Research is an official book series of the Institute for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (ISBE). Each volume is designed around a specific theme of importance to the entrepreneurship and small business community with articles collectively exploring and developing theory and practice in the field.

Mari, Michela / Poggesi, Sara, Current Trends in Female Entrepreneurship: Innovation and Immigration. (Entrepreneurial Behaviour) 148 pp. 2024:4 (Emerald, UK) <714-269>
ISBN 978-1-83549-102-7 hard ¥21,318.- (税込) US$ 95.00 *

The area of female entrepreneurship has been the topic of academic debate and support from the United Nations, European Union and other international bodies, for benefits such as economic growth, creation of new jobs, increasing gender equality and decreasing levels of poverty. While acknowledgement of the contributions of female entrepreneurship is present in academic research, Michela Mari and Sara Poggesi uncover two under-researched aspects: innovation in female entrepreneurship and immigrant female entrepreneurship. Regarding innovative women entrepreneurs, policy makers agree on the socio- economic relevance of such entrepreneurs as they contribute to the economic and social growth of a country and act as mentor for younger girls. However, there are few studies to date on the intertwinement among innovation, gender, and entrepreneurship in management studies. Regarding immigrant women entrepreneurs, policy makers agree on the socio-economic relevance of entrepreneurship for these women as a pathway towards employment, empowerment, and gender equality. However, also in this case, there is still much to learn about how to mobilize such forces. The Entrepreneurial Behaviour series is focused on expanding the scope of Entrepreneurial Behaviour theory and analysis and enriching practice by encouraging multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary approaches.

ISBN 978-981-9964-26-0 hard ¥34,030.- (税込) EUR 139.99

This book serves as a valuable resource for Islamic entrepreneurship researchers, Halal scholars, Islamic finance professionals, Halal advocates, and Halal business model consultants in the fast-changing global economy. The thematic focus is not only on Islamic and halal entrepreneurship but also on halal production and consumption, ethics and impact investing in Islamic entrepreneurship, Shariah principles guiding business model innovation and utilisation of disruptive technologies (such as crowdfunding for startups, bitcoin, digital ventures, cryptocurrency, blockchain, among others), Islamic entrepreneurship and SDGs, halalisation and sustainability issues, and emergence of Islamic-Fintech in Muslim majority nations and nations with plural economic systems, including the interface of Islamic and halal entrepreneurship with science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). At the moment, the working knowledge about Islamic and halal entrepreneurship is at its infancy among Islamic finance professionals, halal consultants, academic researchers, and students nursing the ambition of going into these two fields. Universities, Islamic training academies, and centres are also ill equipped to enrich Islamic and halal curricula with principles and conventional models. One of the proactive ways of breaking financial exclusion, social inequality, and social exclusion caused by apathy and avoidance of Riba, Maysir, and Gharar is by recognising, embracing, and promoting Islamic and halal entrepreneurship among the excluded Muslims and lovers of ethical business models. Overall, this book aims to promote better understanding of Islamic and Halal entrepreneurship in order to assist academics, researchers, practitioners, consultants, and policymakers to improve the growth of Islamic startups and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) by improving social inclusion and financial inclusion and accelerating the attainment of SDG 8 and SDG12.

van der Westhuizen, Thea, Youth Entrepreneurship: An Ecosystem Theory for Young Entrepreneurs in South Africa and Beyond. 339 pp. 2023:10 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <714-278>
ISBN 978-3-031-44338-1 hard ¥34,030.- (税込) EUR 139.99

Addressing the theoretical and practical gaps in our knowledge around developing internal and external domains of youth entrepreneurship, the book places particular emphasis on South Africa, but offers insights and implications that can be applied far beyond our borders. It makes the case that it is possible to develop internal domains through various models. These models include 'shifting hope activating potential entrepreneurship' (SHAPE), 'youth entrepreneur support' (YES), and 'systemic action learning and action research' (SALAR). Validated through a series of assessments, these models were created as a basis for the development and application of a youth entrepreneurship ecosystem for university students. The study presented in this book describes the development of a youth entrepreneur support network to sustain Individual Entrepreneurial Orientation development among students. It provides insights into a framework and model that can be simulated at other institutions, organisations and youth entrepreneurship development programmes. A useful resource for academics and post-graduate students, the book provides valuable insights on how to develop, implement, apply and monitor new models and best practices to support youth entrepreneurs' journey on route to entrepreneurial action.

Andersson, David Emanuel, The Future of the Post-industrial Society: Individualism, Creativity and Entrepreneurship. (Palgrave Studies in Classical Liberalism) 180 pp. 2023:11 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <714-122>
ISBN 978-3-031-46049-4 hard ¥9,720.- (税込) EUR 39.99

This book studies the ongoing transition from an industrial to a creative (or post-industrial) society and how the creative society depends on a 'soft infrastructure' of individualist values and institutions. It explains this by looking first at the key actors in the creative society: creative individuals and entrepreneurial individuals, using insights from social and cognitive psychology and the economic theory of entrepreneurship. It shows how individual creativity and entrepreneurship are supported by both cultural individualism, based on the work of political scientists Ronald Inglehart and Christian Welzel, as well as political individualism, the principles of a democratic market economy guided by classical liberalism. The book offers a number of policy implications that result from the connection of this multidisciplinary reconceptualization of individualism to economic creativity. It discusses a system of property rights that accommodates the creation of new property, ranging from the result of what we normally think of as product innovation to larger-scale innovations embodied in the formation of new lifestyle communities. It also considers examples such as universities that are more open to experimentation and more autonomous from government regulation, and a more liberal immigration policy that may result from the positive association between population diversity and creativity. This book is intended to support further interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research on the creative society (also known as post-industrialism, the postmodern society or the knowledge-based society). It will be of interest to academics and postgraduate students working in political economy, entrepreneurship, institutional economics, Austrian economics, and public policy.

ISBN 978-3-031-44775-4 hard ¥34,030.- (税込) EUR 139.99

The growing number of states with weak capacity to carry out basic governance functions is leading to unacceptable levels of human suffering. Using Ethiopia as a case study, this book acknowledges the multidimensional nature of state fragility and highlights the non-political factors that drive it.The first part uses institutional theory to explore how weak institutions become a source of state fragility by undermining social cohesion and the broader economic progress of countries. Part two examines the role of entrepreneurship and industrial policy as a means of creating and sustaining economic and political stability, trade policy as a means of increasing incomes and easing tensions, and technology policy as a means of engaging people in entrepreneurship and innovation. The final chapter provides lessons that fragile nations can learn from successful developing countries in Southeast Asia and Latin America. This book will appeal to researchers interested in international business, economic and business policy, international trade, and emerging markets who seek to understand how fragile states can promote sustainable peace and development.
