欧米における感情と経済
Arndt, Agnes / Pahl, Kerstin Maria (eds.), Capitalist Cold: Emotions and the Economy in Europe and the United States. (Routledge Approaches to History) 238 pp. 2025:1 (Routledge, UK) <742-192>
ISBN 978-1-032-39912-6 hard ¥40,832.- (税込) GB£ 145.00 *

The capitalist system has often been described by its critics as a heartless economic structure corroding social bonds and symbolic values. Its defenders and analysts likewise use narratives that position emotions as central to the economy. This book enquires into the history of these framings. To explore the role of emotions in economic practices and imaginaries, the volume presents case studies including original rereadings of well-known texts such as Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer's Dialectic of Enlightenment, as well as forays into little-known histories such as representations of capitalists in post-war Turkey, and how art dealers strategically used emotions for navigating the market in interwar Germany. Rather than simply reproducing the image of "cold capitalism", however, it offers nuanced investigations into the ambivalent images evoked by living and working within economic structures. In late-socialist Poland, capitalism felt "warm" and "fuzzy", while pop culture of the seventies found it not destructive but cool, hip, and edgy. This book is aimed at students and scholars of social, economic, and cultural history. The Open Access version of this book, available at www.taylor francis.com, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution- Non- Commercial- No Derivatives(CC- BY- NC- ND) 4.0 license.

ヨーロッパの歴史と記憶における飢饉の政治
de Zwarte, Ingrid / del Arco Blanco, Miguel Angel (eds.), The Politics of Famine in European History and Memory. (Routledge Studies in Modern European History) 294 pp. 2025:5 (Routledge, UK) <742-193>
ISBN 978-1-032-73757-7 hard ¥40,832.- (税込) GB£ 145.00

This is the first book to bring together groundbreaking scholarship focusing on the various ways in which famines result from political decision-making, and how the threat, occurrence, relief, or memory of famine are instrumentalized as a political and military tool.Contributions to this volume show the complexities, variations, and motivations in which famines have been instrumentalized by political actors and regimes, and how the politics of perpetrating hunger and the politics of relieving it have often been entwined. They also address how famine legacies have been subsequently politicized in public debates, educational practices, and popular media; and how these socially and politically constructed memories and myths, in turn, informed broader narratives about hunger and humanitarianism both in history and today. The Politics of Famine in European History and Memory provides a crucial resource for scholars and students from all disciplines interested in the study of famines, as well as those interested in the history of war and troubled pasts more generally.

ポルトガルの都市の市場空間-アーバニズムと商業施設 15~17世紀
Nunes Pereira, Daniela, The Market Space of Portuguese Cities: Urbanism and Commercial Architecture, 15th-17th Centuries. (Routledge Research in Early Modern History) 390 pp. 2025:5 (Routledge, UK) <742-194>
ISBN 978-1-032-58417-1 hard ¥40,832.- (税込) GB£ 145.00

This book explores the transformation of market spaces in Portuguese cities during the intensification of trade driven by increasing profits from overseas exchanges, and how architectural structures and urban planning were directly impacted by these changes to accommodate the new economic dynamics. The terminology and architectural elements of commercial spaces are analyzed to understand the organization of markets. By examining terms such as porches, arcades, arches, balconies, stalls, shops, and pharmacies, the book not only maps the physical locations of these markets but also offers an interpretation of these spaces as instruments of economic control and power organization, reflecting the tensions between market efficiency and the dominance of urban elites. Based on historical documents including contracts, municipal records, and urban regulations, the book offers fresh perspectives on market spaces in Portuguese cities, highlighting the crucial role of commerce in urban transformation and in the adaptation to the increasing economic demands of this period. This volume is intended for historians, architects, urban planners, and scholars interested in urban history, economic history, and the intersection of architecture and commerce. Its interdisciplinary approach makes it relevant for any reader seeking to understand how trade shaped cities in the early modern period.

How did global trade in the premodern world take shape? Who did the trading and what motivated them? Which commodities were traded and how did different goods influence how trading networks functioned? How did geography change how and where people carried goods? How did states and communities seek to control the practice of commerce? And finally, what was the impact of trade on political structures and in the relationship between different states, empires, and communities?Drawing on the fruits of research in history, anthropology, and archaeology, as well as primary sources produced by authors from Africa, Asia and Europe, Global Trade in the Premodern World is a book of remarkable scope written engagingly and accessibly with scholars, students, and non-specialists in mind.
