Whose Water? The Control and Appropriation of Water Resources in Medieval Hungary addresses conflicts surrounding water management, a space where different economic and other socio-political interests meet and sometimes clash. The geographical space that it focuses on is the Kingdom of Hungary, and the time frame is the period from the foundation of the Christian state around the year 1000 to the late medieval period.

Modern politics focuses on who has legitimate claims in water-related disputes, but for historians, it is certainly more relevant to understand how such conflicts were approached and resolved in the past. These questions include what kind of disputes unfolded concerning water use; to what degree water was conceived as a private or common good; and how different interests were aligned with each other. Throughout the book's chapters, it is argued that the use of water by the societies of the Kingdom of Hungary in the Middle Ages gave rise to complex sets of customs and norms that, until the modern era, were the most important principles for settling water-use disputes.

Whose Water? The Control and Appropriation of Water Resources in Medieval Hungary will be of interest to students and scholars of environmental and landscape history, as well as those studying the legal and urban history of premodern Europe.

The emergence and consolidation of the so-called modern state was one of the most remarkable features of the early modern period and went hand in hand with the development of fiscal and financial systems.
This book explores the case of the Spanish Habsburgs who ruled over a vast collection of states and principalities in the burgeoning Spanish empire. In this edited volume, a cast of expert economic historians each explores the fiscal and financial systems created in the different territories of the Spanish Monarchy, including Castile, Aragon, Navarre, Spanish America, Portugal, the Italian States and the Southern Low Countries. While each of the components of this 'composite monarchy' laboriously created its own fiscal and financial apparatus, there are interesting similarities behind the at-first-sight impenetrable jungle of different fiscal and financial institutions which indicates more commonality than is sometimes assumed. Also, the medieval heritage of these fiscal systems did not preclude change and evolution, as the massive expansion of public credit in Portugal and Castile demonstrates. However, the chapters also provide convincing evidence to question the adequacy of the almighty fiscal state paradigm which dominates similar work on the Dutch and British empires and shows that a unified imperial fiscal and financial bureaucracy never existed. The book demonstrates that the imperial center consistently observed local privileges and rights while negotiating its mounting fiscal requests with the Empire's different cities, territories, and corporations separately.
This book will find ready readers among all those interested in European and American economic history, early modern history and the history of public finance.

In seventeenth-century England goldsmiths became what we would now recognise as bankers. Goldsmiths' shops sold not only gold and silver plate but also instruments of credit, such as bonds and bills of exchange, and offered 'safe' places to lodge capital at interest. As well as offering financial services to private individuals, goldsmith bankers also became trusted financial agents to the Crown.

Whilst some goldsmith banks still survive today, and the likes of Coutts are still associated with the Crown, the link between goldsmiths and banking is largely forgotten in modern Britain. This book explores the history of goldsmith banking from its early seventeenth-century origins, through its maturity in the Restoration, the collapse of significant goldsmith banks following the 1672 Stop on the Exchequer, and the continuation of goldsmith banking through the 'financial revolution', formation of the Bank of England, and beyond. It combines a general narrative with examples of specific goldsmith banks throughout the period to examine goldsmith bankers' practices, the instruments they dealt in and popularised, and the innovations in finance they instituted.

This concise introduction to goldsmith banking is ideal for students, academics, and those with a general interest in financial history or early modern London.

How did the global circulation of modern technologies of warfare transform armed resistance? Focusing on the European territories of the Ottoman Empire, Ramazan Hakki OEztan explores how revolutionary organizations navigated a world newly rich in material resources by the late nineteenth century. Unlike those who came before them, these revolutionaries operated in an increasingly connected global economy of violence that fed military-grade surplus weapons and newly invented explosives into their hands. Tracing commodity flows, OEztan profiles arms dealers, smugglers, and informers active in this economy of revolution. While revolutionaries tapped into transnational circuits, exchanged technical know-how, and engaged in calculated acts of violence, bureaucrats sought to dismantle black markets, gather counterintelligence, and wage their own campaigns of repression. Situating these connected histories across time and space, this global history explains the transformation of rebellion and imperial coercion by the turn of the twentieth century. This is a Flip it Open title and may be available open access on Cambridge Core.

What have been the causes and consequences of poverty in society through the ages? How has poverty been portrayed and understood? And how has this understanding differed according to time and place?

In a work that spans 2,500 years these ambitious questions are addressed by 55 experts, each contributing their overview of a theme applied to a period in history. With the help of a broad range of case material they illustrate broad trends and nuances of the culture of poverty in world history from antiquity to the present. Individual volume editors ensure the cohesion of the whole, and to make it as easy as possible to use, chapter titles are identical across each of the volumes. This gives the choice of reading about a specific period in one of the volumes, or following a theme across history by reading the relevant chapter in each of the six.

The six volumes cover: 1. Antiquity (500 BCE to 800 CE); 2. Medieval Age (800 to 1450); 3. Dawn of the World Economy (1450 to 1650); 4. Age of the Emerging Atlantic World (1650 to 1800); 5. Age of Empire (1800 to 1920); 6. Modern Age (1920 to the present).

Themes (and chapter titles) are: defining poverty; poverty, charity, and spirituality; representations of need and want; poverty, race, and ethnicity; poverty and gender; community and exclusion; poverty and economic thought; and poverty and the body politic.

The page extent for the pack is approximately 1728pp. Each volume opens with notes on contributors and an introduction, and concludes with notes, bibliography, and an index.

Special introductory offer (valid up to 3 months after publication): GBP395 / $550 (full price: GBP440 / $610)

This book offers an alternative narrative of the global history of political economy. From ancient civilizations to modern times, zero-sum logic has been a fundamental, yet often ignored, driving force behind political and economic systems worldwide. The authors reveal the contradictions within various ideologies -particularly liberalism and neoliberalism- that claim win-win scenarios while in fact relying on zero-sum principles.

By examining systems from mercantilism to digital economies, the book shows how zero-sum logic underpins diverse economic and political doctrines, including authoritarianism, democracy, and policies like austerity. It combines economic history, political philosophy, historical sociology, and geopolitics in an interdisciplinary approach and comprehensive analysis. The book uncovers how zero-sum logic has historically informed both ideology and practice, challenging prevailing narratives and highlighting the paradoxes within our global economic system.

The book will appeal to students, scholars, and researchers from these disciplines, interested in a better understanding of the economic dynamics that shape our world, and the need for a new, cooperative approach to global political economy.

This book captures Zimbabwe's economic and social history with a focus on the various colonial categories as they interacted and unfolded. It analyses the complex histories of colonialism by illustrating the points of intersection in and interaction of the various aspects of colonialism. Chapters within the book demonstrate how various aspects of colonial society - environmental, ideological, and economic - related to each other.

This book departs from earlier similar publications in how various themes or elements in society were interwoven. Existing titles in this area tend to isolate a single theme, such as environmental or women's history, from other categories. In reality, colonial spaces, however, did not exist in isolation. The social, economic, political, ideological and environmental factors, for instance, were intricately interconnected. The book includes topics such as health infrastructure and urbanization in Southern Rhodesia, encounters between plastic manufacturing industries and the Customs Union, the development and maintenance of Rhodesia's road infrastructure, livestock diseases, the conversion of indigenous lands into wildlife sanctuaries, and the brutalization of workers.

At the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, significant question marks hung over the capacity of the world's wealthiest economies to sustain a long international conflict. This book goes beyond macroeconomic perspectives on war financing to show in highly granular detail how the war was financed in Britain, using previously unstudied data to explore at a societal level how this capital was raised. It offers a framework for understanding how economic and financial policy during wartime became instruments of capital-raising that were crucial to the eventual outcome of the first-ever global war and were not simply ancillary factors affecting military efforts.

Using rich archival sources from the Bank of England, the author explores the identities and demographics of the investors who bought bonds that financed Britain during the First World War. The book examines the different policies and strategies employed to bring investors into the war from across society, including different classes and genders, and demonstrates how the need to raise capital for Allied victory ultimately altered not only the distribution of income and capital in Britain but also the form in which it was held. The book also analyses Britain's war debt and re-financing efforts in this context, spanning a timeline from 1914 up until 1932. This book will be a fascinating read for scholars and students of economic, financial and military history.

This open access book examines how Piedmont, in early modern Italy, developed silk production into a distinctive system of technological and social innovation. It explores the ways in which this fragile yet economically significant material shaped regional strategies of adaptation and growth, linking local expertise to the expanding networks of global trade. Across ten chapters, the author traces the evolution of a complex production ecosystem, from small workshops to royal manufactories, and considers how technology, policy, and labour interacted to sustain the silk economy. Particular attention is given to the contributions of women, migrants, and apprentices, whose work underpinned both the aesthetics of fashion and the practical mechanisms of manufacture. As political and economic transformations unfolded across eighteenth-century Europe, silk became a lens through which to examine tensions between tradition and change, and between vulnerability and resilience. By situating Piedmont within broader European processes, the book demonstrates that innovation emerged not solely from institutional or technological breakthroughs, but from the craft of making, the capacity to adapt, and the steady labour of human hands.

This book uncovers the history of the concession stand in American moviegoing, which was coined 'The Second Box Office' by trade press magazines in the 1930s, such was its importance to the economic viability of movie theatres. Even today, it is not an exaggeration to suggest that, without it, cinemas would struggle to continue in their current form. Yet the history of the concession stand is anything but simple. Despite its stable presence within movie theatres in recent decades, its history is complex, and it took several decades for it to develop into the model we recognise today. This book focuses on the contentious period between 1905 and 1955, and explores key developments within the concession stand and film exhibition, but also America more generally, in an attempt to understand how and why the concession stand grew as it did.

This volume is the first study of the merchant fleet and maritime workforce in late medieval and Tudor England undertaken on a nationwide scale, using all the available customs records concurrently, rather than regional, county, or port-based studies that have predominated in the past. The study uses brand new methodological approaches and the latest digital technologies to provide a quantitative and prosopongraphical evaluation and analysis of shipping, considering the number, type, tonnage, and geographical distribution of vessels. It also reconstructs the lives and careers of those involved in seafaring and the broader maritime communities engaged in trading, fishing, fighting, and supporting roles. This is a foundational work, with numerous implications, its research potential extending into and connecting the fabric of socio-economic, cultural, naval, and political history. Reconstructing the maritime capacity of the realm is essential for understanding the infrastructure and manpower that sustained overseas and coastal trade, and that supported logistical and naval operations during wartime. It also enables us to explore the socio-economic composition and dynamics of coastal and estuarine communities, from major ports to small fishing villages, shedding light on the interconnectedness of regions along England's (and where the sources allow Wales's and the Channel Islands') extensive coastlines, and the various ways in which the demands, challenges, and opportunities of maritime enterprise influenced political decision-making and grand strategy. More broadly, this book challenges many of the prevailing historical narratives about the fleet: it was, for example, far larger in vessels and tonnage throughout our period than has previously been thought.

This book offers a comprehensive and authoritative survey of the tontine, an innovative financial instrument conceived and implemented in various settings throughout Georgian and early Victorian Britain.

The book draws on meticulous historical research including archival sources, account books and newspaper texts to present a coherent analysis of the origins and development of tontines in the United Kingdom. It shows how tontines differed from other forms of financing and offered an innovative approach to funding large infrastructure projects, with new dynamics in shareholding and investing, as well as introducing the concept of private development of public infrastructure. The book presents multiple case studies from the period and compares different types of tontines, such as government-run tontines and private holdings companies, and discusses the failures and challenges as well as successes of this new financial tool. The book will be an excellent reference work for scholars in financial and legal history, as well as social historians and those working on urban histories.

It showcases recent development in the methodology and application of social network analysis to historical research and draws out the unique benefits for economic history and related fields.

Social network analysis is increasingly understood to be an important part of historical research, allowing scholars to balance qualitative investigation with rigorous quantitative techniques. Through a global set of case studies spanning ancient, medieval, early modern and modern history, this edited volume demonstrates the interpretative potential of various SNA approaches to different sets of historical data. The chapters contribute to methodological understanding of SNA in economic history, as well as showing through the case studies how network analysis can decode complex social and economic interactions over time, making visible those relational patterns that were invisible to contemporary historical actors. This cutting-edge resource will be appeal widely to academics in economic, business and financial history, as well as statistics researchers and social scientists looking to strengthen their quantitative research skills.

This book provides a succinct history of a medium-sized silk-weaving firm, Grout & Co, concentrating on the Canadian branch plant it set up following the First World War and operated for three decades. Extraordinarily full records of this proto-multinational firm's management correspondence and verbatim records of Canadian government inquiries mean that a full account of the challenges the company faced is possible. Against a background of global depression and world war, a small and often divided management team struggled to cope with volatile customer preferences, changing tariffs, an uncommonly concentrated retail sector, rapid automation, the move from natural to artificial silk and an intrusive state before finally succumbing to post-1945 global liberalism. Many of the problems encountered by Grout & Co prefigure those faced today by the managers of SMEs dealing with the consequences of Brexit and President Trump.

This Palgrave Pivot aims to present a research-based, accessible analysis of the inner workings of the London stock exchange during the Georgian period.

Consolidating scattered archival sources and materials in one place, the book provides a solid historical basis for understanding the early modern stock market, ending with the formal creation of the Stock Exchange as an institution in 1801. Rather than going into detailed analysis of trading strategies and processes of the time, the book instead presents the 'what', 'where', 'who' and 'how' of the stock market operation, outlining the ways in which market participants negotiated trades, where these took place, and all the different types of securities that were traded. This engaging book will be of interest to financial and economic historians, as well as scholars in the humanities searching for a non-technical guide to the formation of the modern stock market.

This book traces the historical development of key sites of knowledge creation in science and technology and the robust traditions of scholarship around their origins, exploring commonalities, divergences, and transnational features of knowledge-making cultures from the 18th century to the present.

The "space of inquiry" is a meeting of knowledge, labor, and public policy that explodes beyond the confines of lab, campus, and corporation. It is a distinct site connected, formally or informally, to pursuing, teaching, or sharing knowledge - practices that have taken many different shapes across time and around the globe. The space of inquiry ranges from microchips in one scientist's computer to the factory that builds and sells those microchips around the world. In the Internet age, the spatial aspect of inquiry approaches immateriality, yet knowledge is still produced by people, in communities, in specific places. Through vivid case studies of place-making from East Asia to Europe to North America, this volume documents the historical processes of modernization via scientific and technological intensification in new spaces for knowledge production.

Scholars of science, technology, and institutional practices will find this book essential, and its open-access chapters are accessible for use in a variety of undergraduate and graduate classrooms.

This book analyses the financial policies and institutions developed under the Franco regime over nearly four decades and how key actors - banks, savings banks, the foreign sector, the Banco de Espana and public debt management - were used to support the regime's economic objectives.

Situating Francoist financial policy within the broader European context of post-World War II financial repression, it highlights the distinctive features of the Spanish case, shaped by a political dictatorship that profoundly influenced both policy design and institutional practice. By combining institutional analysis with the study of regulation, financial mechanisms and historical evolution, the book offers a nuanced account of the financial history of Francoism and places Spain within broader postwar European patterns of financial interventionism.

Offering new empirical evidence, critical interpretations and comparative perspectives, this volume targets a broad academic audience, including undergraduates seeking an introduction to the Franco regime's financial system, postgraduate and PhD students requiring in-depth analysis for advanced research in economic history, as well as researchers and scholars interested in transnational approaches to economic policy and institutional development.

This book explores the fading era of globalization that emerged in the 1980s and 1990s, driven by the United States - a former champion of economic globalism - now adopting nationalistic and autarkic policies such as higher import tariffs and restricting the inflow of new immigrants and/or deporting migrants. By synthesizing long-run economic history with contemporary issues, the book provides a much-needed historical and international perspective on the cumulative tensions leading to this shift, including economic nationalism, protectionism, financial instability, rising inequality, and geopolitical rivalries.

The book examines globalization's evolution, from the Renaissance to the present, and contrasts its impact on the global north, global south, and former socialist countries of the Soviet bloc. It delves into the social and political fallout of neoliberal globalization, addressing topics such as wealth inequality, the international mobility of billionaires and global talent, the role of technology and innovation, and the challenges of economic stabilization and austerity in unequal societies. Additionally, it reviews the rise and fall of Soviet socialism, the factory system, and the broader implications of empire and war.

Offering insights into the reasons behind the current anti-globalization sentiment, the book calls for a new globalization that is socially equitable, ecologically sustainable, and stable. It will be of great interest to scholars, researchers, and students of political economy, economic history, development economics, and international relations, helping readers to understand the complex and rapidly changing world.

Andres Solimano is Founder and Chairman of the International Center for Globalization and Development (CIGLOB), Santiago, Chile. He holds a PhD in economics from MIT.

Rich in quantitative techniques and economic theory, American Economic History demonstrates how understanding our past illuminates today's economic issues. With engaging language, this text walks readers through four centuries of political, social, and economic history, focusing on laws and institutions while emphasizing current economic topics.

Adopting an analytical approach, the ninth edition has been heavily updated to incorporate new literature and reflect modern economic historians' tools and methodologies. Coverage of slavery, population growth, migration, the Great Depression, the New Deal, wartime prosperity, and the new millennium has been expanded and revised. A new chapter examines the Great Recession and its aftermath. The book also includes a discussion of econometrics and causal inference, which has become a critical tool in the toolbox of economic historians. Teaching support includes instructor resources, such as PowerPoint slides, a test bank, and a range of cases, providing students with the opportunity to work with real data.

Using minimal math and assuming little previous background in economics or history, this classic text suits all study levels. Bridging historical analysis with contemporary economic understanding, it simplifies complex concepts, making them accessible to everyone - from first-year students all the way through to economics majors.

European colonial rule in Asia, Africa, and the Americas was a world-changing force and left a variety of legacies - demographic, economic, environmental, technological, and cultural. The economic history of colonialism has seen an outburst of research in the last 20-odd years; but, with many significant new works appearing in specialist journals, students and teachers of the field may still find it challenging to explain what this scholarship adds up to, its most significant claims and breakthroughs and how it relates to older versions of the economic history of colonialism.

This handbook gathers a set of specially commissioned essays written by leading contributors to the field which focus on the two principal waves of European colonialism since the 15th century: the first in which Europeans converged mainly on the Americas (c. 1490s-1820s) and the second in which attention was focused on acquiring control over large swathes of Asia and Africa (c. 1850s-1970s). It shows students of economic history the key facts that need to be explained about the imperial powers, the colonial experience, and why the European empires outside Europe are significant for the economic history of the world. The handbook also includes studies of the Japanese and American Empires in Asia, as these were provoked by and in nature quite comparable to the formation of European empires thus providing worthwhile and meaningful comparisons.

This handbook will serve as a vital resource for research, teaching, and reference, offering readers insights into economic history, colonialism, globalisation, and the forces that have shaped the modern world economy.

This book investigates the birth and early evolution of the international aid regime in the 1940s and 1950s, considering how America established a postwar economic order in which aid was balanced against the establishment of the IMF as an instrument of economic discipline.

Through the combination of the carrot of global aid and the monetarist stick of the IMF, the US was able to successfully draw most of the newly decolonising countries of the global south of the world into the global capitalist system, ultimately sowing the seeds for neoliberalism and the Washington consensus. The book tells this story by assessing key moments in the evolution of the global aid regime, from the Bretton Woods Agreement, to the Marshall Plan and the first American economic assistance programs to Western Europe and Japan, through to the evolution of the IMF's policies in the late 1940s and 1950s and the creation of the first global bilateral development aid program and the expansion of multilateral assistance programs in the 1950s. Through these events, the book demonstrates that the evolution of international aid and the IMF as an instrument of economic discipline are fundamentally entwined, and we can't understand either story without the other.

The in-depth analysis in this book will be of interest to historians and researchers of international relations, political economy, and global development, but it also has much to teach us about today's global order.

The story of the mavericks and scientists, crackpots and artistic visionaries who imagined a future where machines fuse with our minds

As humanity and technology become ever more tightly interwoven, Wireheads explores the final and most intimate frontier: the brain, and the electronic devices, magnetic signals, implants, and computer interfaces that promise to merge it with the world of the machine. Will these technologies eventually direct our thoughts and behaviour-or are they doing so already? Will they maintain us in states of artificial bliss, or connect us to higher intelligences, or replace the world of our senses with simulated realities?

Mike Jay, acclaimed author of Psychonauts, now traces the tangled, paranoid history of these real and fantastical brain technologies. From the fictions of H. G. Wells and Philip K. Dick to The Matrix, the CIA's Cold War experiments and Elon Musk's Neuralink, scientists and visionaries have long chased the dream of neural enhancement and control, with wildly varying degrees of success.

Encompassing covert military operations and psychedelic art, moral philosophy and cybernetic theory, Jay has assembled a thrilling narrative out of our attempts to understand and rewire the brain-and a brilliant meditation on what it means to be human in a posthuman age.
