Innovation in China: A Strategic Management Casebook. 275 pp. 2022:3 (World Scientific, SI) <671-743>
ISBN 978-981-12-4588-6 hard ¥31,908.- (税込) US$ 148.00 *
Innovation has shaped society since civilization began. Imperial China was the most innovative society on earth, but it failed to join the 19th century industrial revolution. In the 20th century, the Communist Party of China addressed that failure. Today China boasts an internationally compliant, rapidly developing IP system. State planning continues to be critical as the case of the largest, single, technology acquisition and infrastructure project in world history, high speed rail, demonstrates. But most of the innovation in China comes from the private sector: government incubators are among the government stimuli of private initiative, both local and global. And as the case on Cisco shows, foreign MNCs management of innovation in China is attractive but must involve co-ordination with government policy. This book presents cases where managers determine policy in China's increasingly innovative society. Readers take the roles of decision-makers to make strategy decisions. The cases in this volume showcase China's traditional three teachings, socialist market institutions, and modern management using studies on current Chinese companies and their leaders, among them big names such as Haier and Huawei. Each case stands alone as teaching material for instructors. Taken together, the book presents evolving models of innovation. Their subtle differences from western constructs critically impact the development of our global society.

Agile Enterprise Risk Management: Risk-Based Thinking, Multi-Disciplinary Management and Digital Transformation. (Security, Audit and Leadership Series) 304 pp. 2022:6 (CRC Pr., US) <671-745>
ISBN 978-1-03-203703-5 hard ¥14,241.- (税込) GB£ 49.99
In the VUCA (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous) world in which we are currently operating the rapid evolution of forces acting on your company, such as technology, are driving continual change to the degree that you will need to be prepared to evolve and transform again and again to keep pace. There is no single target end-state that you can reach that will allow you to take an extended breather. The chances are, you will have to change course, maybe more than once, while executing any substantial transformation you undertake. If your company is to be sustainable, you will need to perform a Digital Transformation and prepare yourself to manage the numerous, varied and changing risks that go along with it. Authorities on risk management, such as ISO, COSO, OMB and NIST, focus more on what Risk Management should look like once it's in place than they do on how to get there. They generally leave it up to companies to determine how to organize and implement it, themselves. Agile Enterprise Risk Management is the discipline you will need to meet this challenge. Managing risks while transforming a company to enable continuous adaptation are substantial, and AERM practices are an evolutionary step away from traditional Risk Assessment, Risk Management and Risk Assurance. The value that Agile Enterprise Risk Management provides is guidance as to how to achieve accelerated RM while continuing to comply with relevant standards. Although you are now faced with the challenge of performing two transformations simultaneously, it is feasible if you are willing to do it. It is quite possible that you are already doing a lot of what you need to do to succeed at this. Digital transformation and AERM adoption are symbiotic-both require common management disciplines, which must be implemented and exercised in a manner consistent with running a digital business, to be successful. This book provides a road map to achieving this.

Big Data and Information Theory. 130 pp. 2022:6 (Routledge, UK) <671-746>
ISBN 978-1-03-226631-2 hard ¥38,461.- (税込) GB£ 135.00 *
Big Data and Information Theory are a binding force between various areas of knowledge that allow for societal advancement. Rapid development of data analytic and information theory allows companies to store vast amounts of information about production, inventory, service, and consumer activities. More powerful CPUs and cloud computing make it possible to do complex optimization instead of using heuristic algorithms, as well as instant rather than offline decision-making. The era of "big data" challenges includes analysis, capture, curation, search, sharing, storage, transfer, visualization, and privacy violations. Big data calls for better integration of optimization, statistics, and data mining. In response to these challenges this book brings together leading researchers and engineers to exchange and share their experiences and research results about big data and information theory applications in various areas. This book covers a broad range of topics including statistics, data mining, data warehouse implementation, engineering management in large-scale infrastructure systems, data-driven sustainable supply chain network, information technology service offshoring project issues, online rumors governance, preliminary cost estimation, and information system project selection. The chapters in this book were originally published in the journal, International Journal of Management Science and Engineering Management.

This program aims to discuss and analyze, under the general trend of indigenous innovation, how enterprises construct indigenous innovation capability through total innovation management and to offer enterprises theoretical foundations and practical guidance to develop themselves towards indigenous innovation. The research results are not only the results of a three-year long research but also the reflection of the accumulated experiences of our research center in the field of technology innovation for nearly 40 years. In the field of technology innovation, we have experienced three distinct phases, namely: secondary innovation, portfolio innovation and total innovation.Total innovation is the main characteristic of an innovation-based enterprise. Creating an innovation-oriented enterprise by constructing a total innovation system is the approach that successful foreign enterprises use to move towards excellence and also the only way that Chinese enterprises have to take to become innovation-oriented enterprises that leapfrog in development.

The book is designed around five key questions that address the what, how, where, who and why of the creative process, employing frameworks, questions and illustrative 'recipes' designed to inspire out-of-the-box creative thinking. ISBN 978-1-80088-599-8 hard ¥26,780.- (税込) GB£ 94.00 *

The Executive's Guide to AI and Analytics: The Foundations of Execution and Success in the New World. 152 pp. 2022:6 (Routledge, UK) <671-710>
ISBN 978-1-03-200795-3 hard ¥38,461.- (税込) GB£ 135.00 *
ISBN 978-1-03-200794-6 paper ¥8,543.- (税込) GB£ 29.99 *
The Problem? Companies are failing to deliver on AI and analytics with over half stating they are "not yet treating data as a business asset". Over half admit that they are not competing on data and analytics. Seven out of 10 companies in a 2020 MIT study reported minimal or no impact from AI so far. Among the 90% of companies that have made some investment in AI, fewer than 2 out of 5 (40%) report business gains from AI in the past three years. And only about 25% of organizations have actually forged this data-driven culture. Is investment lacking? No. Companies now are spending more than ever in data, analytics, and AI technologies. Is it a lack of technology? No. There are fascinating breakthroughs occurring on all fronts with image, voice, and streaming pattern recognition on the forefront. Is it a lack of technical talent? Not really. While some studies cite that we need to train more data scientists, developers, and related professionals, the curve of demand by supply is dampening. Is it a lack of creating an executable strategic plan? Yes. While there has been a lot of strategic wishing, organizations lack meaningful strategic plans. Specifically, the development of executable strategies and the leadership to see these strategies brought to fruition. This is the problem.Lack of execution and lack of incorporating key components that align and enable execution of the business strategy to delivery is killing AI and analytics programs. Scott Burk and Gary D. Miner have written this book for executives at all levels who are charged with executing on analytics that need to address this issue. The book provides unique insights into repairing the gaps that programs need to fill to provide value from analytics programs. It complements their three-part series, It's All Analytics! by focusing on leadership decisions that augment data literacy, organizational architecture, and AI case studies.

Taming Corporate Power in the 21st Century. (Elements in Reinventing Capitalism) 75 pp. 2022:5 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <671-715>

There is broad consensus across the political spectrum in the US that monopolistic corporations - particularly Big Tech companies -- have grown too powerful, and that we need to revive antitrust to take on the 'curse of bigness.' But both the diagnosis and the cure are rooted in an outdated understanding of how the American economy is organized. Information and communication technologies have fundamentally altered the markets for capital, labor, supplies, and distribution in ways that undermine the basic categories we use to understand the economy. Nationality, industry, firm, size, employee, and other fundamental terms are increasingly detached from the operations of the economy. If we want to understand and tame the new sources of economic power, we need a new diagnosis and a new set of tools.

In today's competitive, globalized marketplace, the provision of services and products is a result of teamwork between several organizations. Relationships between organizations of any size are strategically important. If your supplier falls down at a crucial moment, it can have survival implications for your company or for other members of your supply chain. The management of these strategic assets cannot be left to chance and the same attention that you devote to finance, operations, HR, etc. must be applied to business relationships. Despite this, very few organizations focus on this or are even aware that they need to do it. Those that do are unsure how to do it. This is not helped by business schools that focus on either customer relationship management (CRM) or supplier relationship management (SRM) rather than collaboration between partners (Enterprise Relationship Management). This book is a unique "go-to" guide for all managers who should be looking at collaboration with other organizations as a new way to attain outstanding results that would not be achieved on their own. Currently, there is nothing else of this nature on the market. The book identifies relationship management as a pivotal management function. It presents a comprehensive, flexible, end-to-end management process that can be easily incorporated into the existing management structures. Further, they describe the crucial role of the relationship manager who is at the heart of the system and provides the drive to achieve high performance. Any company can tailor this discipline to the needs of its organization - whether an SME or a multi-national company selecting a new partner or managing existing relationships. This book covers the decision of whether or not to partner and with whom, the creation of an appropriate system of governance, the transition to operations, managing performance for continuous improvement, and, finally, controlled wind-up of the partnership. Throughout, diagrams to signpost the sequence of activities, checklists of important actions, and job-related worksheets are provided. In addition, there are numerous case studies in a variety of industries and public sectors that will be used as illustrations. Altogether these make this book ideally suitable for experienced managers as well as for training and induction purposes. Essentially, Implementing and Managing Collaborative Relationships: A Practical Guide for Managers shows managers how they can create and operate a simple and effective system of Enterprise Relationship Management that will enable them to maximize efficiency, resilience, innovation, and profitability.

The ISO Innovation Management System (IMS) Standard (ISO 56002) provides a much needed and well-timed input to the innovation management discipline. While research efforts within the domain of innovation management have vastly increased over the past decades, research has primarily been conducted through specific contributions to distinct areas of innovation management (e.g., top management, culture, processes), lacking a more holistic perspective. Practitioners know that managing innovation is challenging. Bringing in a globally recognised standard that offers a holistic perspective will be key in professionalising the innovation management discipline, much like quality management and project management standards have done in the past. This book focuses on the ISO Innovation Management System Standard and the links with ISPIM's Body of Knowledge (BoK) special interest group, the ISO innovation management community, and the International Collaboration Platform for Innovation Management System (ICP4IMS). It covers four topics as follows:

Shared Service Organizations (SSOs) are of growing relevance in research and corporate practice since they combine a number of benefits for multinational corporations, such as cost reductions and an improved risk management. However, managers voice concerns about potential negative impacts on the firm’s effectiveness due to a lower service quality. A major reason for the ongoing controversy of the SSOs’ outcome is closely related to the shortcoming of measuring their performance. This study analyzes Performance Measurement System (PMS) design in SSOs and sheds light on its effectiveness. Furthermore, the findings reveal which determinants increase PMS effectiveness. This empirical analysis yields practical design recommendations for practitioners working in a shared service environment.

Innovation offers potential: to cure diseases, to better connect people, and to make the way we live and work more efficient and enjoyable. At the same time, innovation can fuel inequality, decimate livelihoods, and harm mental health. This book contends that inclusive innovation - innovation motivated by environmental and social aims - is able to uplift the benefits of innovation while reducing its harms. The book provides accessible engagement with inclusive innovation happening at the grassroots level through to policy arenas, with a focus on the South-East Asian region. Focusing on fundamental questions underpinning innovation, in terms of how, what and where, it argues that inclusive innovation has social processes and low-tech solutions as essential means of driving innovation, and that environmental concerns must be considered alongside societal aims. The book's understanding of inclusive innovation posits that marginalized or underrepresented innovators are empowered to include themselves by solving a problem that they are experiencing. The first in-depth exploration of efforts underway to assuage inequality from policy, private sector, and grassroots perspectives, this book will interest researchers in the areas of innovation studies, political economy, and development studies.Chapters 1 and 5 of this book are available for free in PDF format as Open Access from the individual product page at www.routledge.com. Are There Laws of Innovation? 300 pp. 2022:4 (World Scientific, SI) <671-725>

Beyond real GDP, innovative capacity is an important indicator of the economic strength of a nation. By studying innovative capacity and other indicators of success in innovation across the Group-of-Seven (G7) Countries, the East Asian Newly Industrialised Economies (EANIEs) and Mainland China, this book will systematically establish a positive relationship between innovation outputs and inputs of different economies. In doing so, it seeks to answer the question - are there laws of innovation? It seeks to identify the determinants of innovation at the economy-wide level, ascertain whether these determinants are similar across different economies, and find suitable metrics for comparing relative success in innovation across different economies. It concludes that innovation, rather than being a stroke of good fortune, comes from research and development activities conducted over a long period of time, and sheds light on future trends and areas for further research.

Innovation requires more than a eureka moment. The vast majority of new product ideas never make it to market. What do people and businesses need to know about the realities of innovating in order to develop products successfully?Lorraine Marchand-a seasoned practitioner who has guided Fortune 500 companies and start-ups on developing and launching new ideas-lays out a step-by-step framework for spurring success. She shares her eight laws of innovation, a formula for driving significant and lasting transformation in any organization. She pinpoints the strengths shared by the big ideas that break through and debunks the myths that hold back aspiring creators. Drawing on her experience as a woman in a male-dominated field, Marchand discusses how to support entrepreneurship by women and highlights the contributions of underrepresented innovators.Marchand's how-to program for innovation is clear and easy to follow, featuring a toolkit of strategic templates and planning frameworks that are illustrated by helpful case studies. Access Rules: Freeing Data from Big Tech for a Better Future. 220 pp. 2022:4 (U. California Pr., US) <671-730>
ISBN 978-0-520-38773-7 hard ¥5,379.- (税込) US$ 24.95 *
A powerful and urgent call to action: to improve our lives and our societies, we must demand open access to data for all. Information is power, and the time is now for digital liberation. Access Rules mounts a strong and hopeful argument for how informational tools at present in the hands of a few could instead become empowering machines for everyone. By forcing data-hoarding companies to open access to their data, we can reinvigorate both our economy and our society. Authors Viktor Mayer-Schoenberger and Thomas Ramge contend that if we disrupt monopoly power and create a level playing field, digital innovations can emerge to benefit us all. Over the past twenty years, Big Tech has managed to centralize the most relevant data on their servers, as data has become the most important raw material for innovation. However, dominant oligopolists like Facebook, Amazon, and Google, in contrast with their reputation as digital pioneers, are actually slowing down innovation and progress by withholding data for the benefit of their shareholders--at the expense of customers, the economy, and society. As Access Rules compellingly argues, ultimately it is up to us to force information giants, wherever they are located, to open their treasure troves of data to others. In order for us to limit global warming, contain a virus like COVID-19, or successfully fight poverty, everyone-including citizens and scientists, start-ups and established companies, as well as the public sector and NGOs-must have access to data. When everyone has access to the informational riches of the data age, the nature of digital power will change. Information technology will find its way back to its original purpose: empowering all of us to use information so we can thrive as individuals and as societies.

Decision Leadership: Empowering Others to Make Better Choices. 264 pp. 2022:3 (Yale U. Pr., US) <671-732>
ISBN 978-0-300-25969-8 hard ¥6,036.- (税込) US$ 28.00 *
A fresh, research-driven playbook for how successful leaders can maximize the potential of others When we think of leaders, we often imagine lone, inspirational figures lauded for their behaviors, attributes, and personal decisions, and leadership books often reinforce that view. However, this approach ignores a leader's mission to empower others. Applying decades of behavioral science research, Don A. Moore and Max H. Bazerman offer a passionate corrective to this view, casting today's organizations as decision factories in which effective leaders are decision architects, enabling those around them to make wise, ethical choices consistent with their own interests and the organization's highest values. As a result, a leader's impact grows because it ripples out instead of relying on one individual to play the part of heroic figure. Filled with real-life stories and examples of the structures, incentives, and systems that successful leaders have used, this playbook equips each of us to facilitate wise decisions.

Envisioning the Future of Learning for Creativity, Innovation and Entrepreneurship. 150 pp. 2022:1 (de Gruyter, GW) <671-735>

Successful entrepreneurs and innovators are skilled at understanding the next wave of trends. But how can teachers and trainers stay current and address the dynamic opportunities of creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship (CIE) teaching and training? This book outlines the work and findings of the Erasmus+ VISION research project into the future of education for CIE. The VISION team was comprised of 14 partners including universities, companies and research institutions who conducted an extensive research project over a two-year period (2020-2021). The VISION partners gained insights from multiple experts around the world through more than 130 interviews and 9 workshops on the future shifts that impact a number of areas including: the future of work, digitalisation, social innovation and creative learning. These have been synthesised, shared, and refined to provide a view of how the training of CIE will evolve over the next decade. This book focuses on four major findings from the VISION project: Learning becomes more of an immersive, experimental experience. It takes place in more creative spaces, focuses on the big challenges and is supported by new tech. The impact of learning within the ‘real-world’ is prioritised and amplified. Learning is redesigned to put the student, not the system, more at the centre. Better, personalised, unbundled learning includes more peer-to-peer and hybrid experiences. Assessing impact at the individual level from multiple learning sources is key. There is a rise in on the job education and learning by doing as part of life-long upskilling. Much of this occurs in a digital context with innovative financing. Project-based learning, reskilling and upskilling are at the fore. Teachers cease to be content-sources as they become more flexible, act as coaches and mentors and increasingly support the development of both hard and soft skills. New teacher competencies are prioritised with a wider supporting toolkit. Envisioning the Future of Learning for Creativity, Innovation and Entrepreneurship will provide invaluable insights into the future of education in CIE. The volume lays the groundwork for understanding the growing areas of sustainable business and sustainable finance. High-Performance Coaching for Managers: A Step-by-Step Approach to Increase Employees' Performance and Productivity. 392 pp. 2022:6 (Productivity Pr., US) <671-737>
ISBN 978-0-367-74060-3 hard ¥31,339.- (税込) GB£ 110.00 *
ISBN 978-0-367-74058-0 paper ¥11,962.- (税込) GB£ 41.99 *
Coaching is a necessary skill for managers. It is important as a fundamental part of an organization's talent efforts-including talent acquisition, development and retention strategies. For a coaching program to succeed in an organization, it should be recognized as a useful approach throughout the organization and become part of the fabric of the corporate culture. Performance Coaching for Managers provides an important tool for organizations to use to train their managers on coaching. This book differs significantly from other books in the coaching market. Many books on coaching cast coaches as facilitators who question their clients (the coachees), helping them to articulate their own problems, formulate their own solutions, develop their own action plans to solve problems, and measure the success of efforts to implement those plans. That is called a nondirective approach. But this book adopts a directive approach by casting the coach as a manager who diagnoses the problems with worker job performance and offers specific advice on how to solve those problems. While there is nothing wrong with a nondirective approach, it does not always work well in job performance reviews in which the manager must inform the worker about gaps between what is needed (the desired) and what is performed (the actual). The significant difference between what is currently available in the market and what is offered in this book is the authors' collective experience of over 70 combined years of hands-on research and delivery experiences in the Human Resources Development field. According to the Harvard Business Review (2015), workers generally expect their immediate supervisors to give them honest feedback on how well they do their jobs-and specific advice on what to do if they are not performing in alignment with organizational expectations. When workers do not receive advice-but instead are questioned about their own views-they regard their managers as either incompetent or disingenuous. Effective managers should be able to offer direction to their employees. After all, managers are responsible for ensuring that their organizational units deliver the results needed by the organization. If they fail to do that, the organization does not achieve its strategic goals. This book gives managers direction in how to offer directive coaching to their workers.

Pursuing Wisdom: A Primer for Leaders and Learners. 168 pp. 2021:12 (Rowman & Littlefield, US) <671-739>
ISBN 978-1-5381-5984-2 hard ¥17,894.- (税込) US$ 83.00 *

Wisdom, considered the highest level of enlightenment, has not had a foothold in our education since Plato's Academy and Aristotle's Lyceum. Yet it is wisdom that ultimately promotes human flourishing and equips individuals with the sophistication to live life well. Wisdom is especially urgent if leaders and followers are to lead and follow well.Wisdom is more critical and urgent than ever in today's world. Stories of lack of discernment and sound judgment abound in the news. Comments such as "what were they thinking?" and "why did they do that?" reveal that wisdom is often painfully lacking when it comes to making decisions. The world needs people who judiciously discern and courageously implement innovative decisions at the right time and in the right way. But before wisdom can be adequately taught, it needs to be properly understood.Historically, the study and acquisition of wisdom has been reserved to the philosophical and theological fields of study, often making wisdom appear esoteric, elusive, and mysterious. While relatively recent empirical attempts have led to certain quantifications and qualifications of wisdom, a comprehensive and cohesive model for understanding, teaching, and implementing general wisdom has yet to emerge. Unfortunately, philosophical and theological treatises on wisdom have been overly convoluted or mystical, making wisdom appear elusive for the lay person. The empirical traditions have overanalyzed the concept to make it almost formulaic and uninspiring. This primer merges insights from the philosophical, theological, and empirical traditions to provide a simple model for understanding, acquiring, practicing, and teaching wisdom. This primer is unique is that it uses clear language to walk the readers through representative classical philosophical and religious works and empirical studies in lieu of jargon-filled meditations. As a result, the primer orients readers to think like philosophers, theologians, and social scientists by shepherding them through to the logic of previous works on wisdom. What also sets this work apart is its brevity without compromise to substance. This primer demonstrates that the complicated can be made relatively simple, and that brevity and profound meaning often walk hand in hand.Ideal for emerging and established leaders, this book demonstrates that wisdom inspires confidence, establishes credibility, and helps us successfully navigate complex problems and promote human progress. This primer makes wisdom accessible and provides all soon-to-be, novice, and seasoned leaders with the understanding, dispositions, and skills to be discerning and virtuous people others will want to emulate and follow.

ISBN 978-1-80061-132-0 hard ¥21,128.- (税込) US$ 98.00 *
Artificial Intelligence and Innovation Management contributes to the ongoing debate among innovation scholars and practitioners focusing on the potential impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on the ways companies and organizations do business, operate and innovate. It considers AI as a source of innovation both in terms of innovation within the field of AI itself (AI innovation) and in terms of how it enables or disrupts innovation in other fields (AI-driven innovation). The book's content is driven by several important conclusions:It is therefore both necessary and timely to explore the different aspects of the relationship between AI and IM.The contributors to this book include both scholars and practitioners from multiple countries and different types of institutions. They were selected based on their ability to provide a relevant distinctive perspective on the relationship between AI and IM; the degree of their professional engagement with the field; their ability to contribute to the thematic and contextual diversity of the contributions; and their ability to provide actionable insights for both innovation scholars and practitioners.Helena Blackbright (Maelardalen University, Sweden) and Stoyan Tanev (Carleton University, Canada) are chairing the Special Interest Group on AI and IM at the International Society for Professional Innovation Management (https://www.ispim-innovation.com/).

This book provides an in-depth exploration of one of the most significant success stories of the development of an entrepreneurial university in recent times as well as its role within society and the economy. Written by leading business school Dean and scholar, Howard Thomas, and Alex Wilson and Michelle Lee, the book tracks the genesis of the idea of a third local university in Singapore to its fruition as Singapore Management University (SMU). It provides important insight and lessons for senior university and business school leaders, as well as regional and national governments. The increasing emphasis on the importance of innovative, entrepreneurial universities for social and economic growth has prompted this review of the strategy and impact of SMU. The book addresses the strategic evolution of SMU itself, from its origins as a single business school, into a multi-school, social science-focused school of management. It examines whether it has fulfilled its promise as an entrepreneurial university and a change agent in the context of Singapore's strong economic growth and educational strategy. More broadly, it explores how investment in education, and entrepreneurial universities such as SMU, can facilitate and enhance economic growth. University leadership teams, policy analysts, faculty and students of entrepreneurship education, education management and policy in general, and business education in particular, will find this book an invaluable insight into building a genuinely entrepreneurial university.

Asia has been a hub for e-commerce companies in the past decade and the growth trajectory narrates the story of bright future. Its growth has largely impacted the economic, social and technological advancements in every country and contributed to global trade. Nonetheless, the success and failure of e-commerce companies lies on various factors, some of which include product pricing, competition, strategies and business models. However, with surveys in India indicating how sale of counterfeit products remains a significant problem for online shoppers across many e-commerce sites, e-commerce companies claim they are taking tough steps to ensure that counterfeit products do not make their way to customers, by delisting fraud sellers, using tamper-proof packaging and monitoring warehouses. This book aims to unwrap the stories of e-commerce companies in Asia and how they have contributed to the society. It discusses the growth and failures of some e-commerce giants and looks at both theoretical and practical aspects of e-commerce by presenting the issues, challenges and successes of e-commerce businesses. It examines interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary aspects from micro and macro perspectives and links disciplines like strategy, management, entrepreneurship, competitiveness, finance, technology and operations.
