How Megaprojects Are Damaging Nigeria and How to Fix It: A Practical Guide to Mastering Very Large Government Projects. 258 pp. 2022:7 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <677-252>
ISBN 978-3-030-96473-3 hard ¥7,764.- (税込) EUR 32.99
Since 1960, two-thirds of very large governmental projects in Nigeria have not only failed, but been abandoned mid-course. This presents a bigger failure rate than mega projects elsewhere, and yet there is no available data or analysis to help us understand the reasons behind such failures. This book provides an authoritative examination into why very large projects in Nigeria have failed so badly, and provides practical recommendations on how the Nigerian government can improve its project performance. Drawing on data from 38 very large projects (19 completed and 19 abandoned) with a total budget of over $25B, this book presents detailed analysis of these projects and in-depth case studies 11 of the projects, and presents lessons for improvement. Through this, the authors have identified a small number of key success drivers, and argue that making moderate improvements on any of them would, on average, save hundreds of millions of dollars on one large project alone. This book is a game-changer in the management of government mega projects in Nigeria. With clear implications for other developing economies, this is a vital resource for project management practitioners, executives and civil servants. This is an open access book.

Emergent Responsible Management: A Social Connection Model. (Kobe University Monograph Series in Social Science Research) 133 pp. 2022:5 (Springer, GW) <677-377>
ISBN 978-981-19-0415-8 hard ¥25,890.- (税込) EUR 109.99 *
This book proposes emergent responsible management as a new tool to address the infinite nature of managerial responsibility and discusses how to bring out activities based on infinite responsibility in organizations. Whereas the concept of responsibility of corporations has been brought to the forefront with increasing recognition of the importance of corporate social responsibility (CSR), its essence has not been fully perceived, which has inevitably resulted in the restrictive feeling associated with organizational CSR activities. This book not only involves theoretical discussion by shedding light on the notions of 'responsibility' and 'emergence' underpinning the theory of emergent responsible management; it also provides practical insights with several case studies to examine how activities reflecting these fundamental elements have been practiced. In this way, the authors propose corresponding organizational design and process to encourage its continued practice. In addition, the effects of emergent responsible management and how it can be applied to new issues such as fulfilling sustainable development goals (SDGs) are also examined. The book is highly recommended for business practitioners as well as consultants who deal with CSR in everyday practice.

Social Innovation and Social Enterprises: Toward a Holistic Perspective. (Issues in Business Ethics 62) 239 pp. 2022:7 (Springer, GW) <677-386>
ISBN 978-3-030-96595-2 hard ¥37,660.- (税込) EUR 159.99
This book provides an exhaustive, critical analysis of the challenges and opportunities associated with social enterprises and social innovation. More specifically, it addresses questions such as: What is a social innovation? Which are the best theories that explain how social innovations are generated and propagated in the global society? What is a social enterprise? Which are the theoretical perspectives that best describe the functioning of Social Enterprises , the threats and opportunities? How do social enterprises deal with the profit and non profit worlds and how these interactions affect their capability to be social innovators? The most recent literature has focused on strategies integrating conflicting logic, organizational practices or processes. In all these cases, the hybrid nature of the organization is implemented and sustained through original business models, new organizational arrangements and governance and novel strategies. We believe that the hybrid and institutional perspectives are just one of the many theoretical lenses that can be used to frame social innovation and social enterprises. Along this line, some have highlighted the inherent ethical nature of these phenomena, the critical role played by ethical values whose advancement go well beyond what expected by the corporate social responsibility, business ethics and institutional theorizing. This book follows these perspectives exploring the link between social innovation and social enterprises, presenting them as a new a new possible field of research that support new ways to understand and theorize individual, organizational and community behaviors.

The Oxford Handbook of State Capitalism and the Firm. (Oxford Handbooks) 808 pp. 2022:7 (Oxford U. Pr., UK) <677-388>
ISBN 978-0-19-883736-7 hard ¥44,159.- (税込) GB£ 155.00 *
There has been a major revival of interest in State Capitalism: what it is, where it is found, and why it is seemingly becoming more ubiquitous. As a concept, it has evolved from radical critiques of the Soviet Union, to being deployed by neo-liberals to describe market reforms deemed imperfect, to settle into a middle ground, as a pragmatic way to describe the state assuming a role as an active economic agent, in addition to its regulatory, social, and security functions. The latter is the central focus of this book, although due attention is accorded to the origins of state capitalism and how it has changed over the years, as well as contemporary ways in which state capitalism may be theorized. This economic agency may assume direct forms, for example, via state owned enterprises. However, it may also be indirect, for example, actively serving private interests through promoting insider firms, who may occupy monopolistic market positions and perform outsourced state functions. In turn, this leads to raising salient governance questions. The latter may encompass agency tensions between public ownership, and political or even private interest control; it may also include issues of transparency and monitoring.
