Corine Pelluchon examines the psychological and political obstacles standing in the way of the emergence of a new ecological Enlightenment, the basic principles of which she has developed in her books. Her starting point is the thesis that the current ecological and democratic crises cannot be understood without analyzing the system of domination that structures our relationships with other people, animals, nature, and with ourselves. In dialogue with phenomenology, critical theory, and existentialism, the analysis uncovers the anthropological roots of modern destructiveness: the refusal to acknowledge one's own vulnerability, the denial of death, fantasies of omnipotence, and the decoupling of technical rationality from responsibility. The author demonstrates that these mechanisms give rise to a culture of death, which manifests itself in the trivialization of violence, the destruction of life, and the erosion of democratic institutions. Violence against animals, ecological extractivism, and the growing susceptibility to authoritarian populist discourses thus appear as interconnected expressions of the same imaginary of domination and the same denial of mortality.
In response to these dynamics, the essay introduces the concept of consideratio. It refers to a way of being that forms the foundation for the virtues enabling us to find joy in changing our lifestyle. It is based on a deepening of our self-awareness as vulnerable, born, and mortal beings, through which we intensely experience our belonging to the shared world. This experience leads to an expansion of subjectivity, which Corine Pelluchon calls transdescendence. This transformation of our relationship to ourselves and to others forms the ethical and political prerequisite for an ecological democracy. At the same time, it opens the possibility of a hope, not to be understood as optimism, but as the ability to recognize, despite the crises, the harbingers of a new horizon - a perspective that gives us the energy to reframe the future.

Can religious citizens live cooperatively and justly with others in a pluralistic polity? Can religious arguments play a role within healthy democratic deliberation?

In this volume, Paul Billingham and Marilie Coetsee debate these timely issues, examining what responsible democratic citizenship requires of the religiously committed. Billingham argues that a religious citizen doesn't need to check or undermine her deepest beliefs in order to engage in the political life of a pluralistic society, and rebuts familiar worries about religious political arguments being dogmatic, domineering, and incomprehensible and unpersuasive to non-believers. Furthermore, he draws on real-life examples to argue that religious contributions to democratic deliberation can be beneficial, ultimately strengthening discourse, pluralism, and democracy. Coetsee is much more skeptical. She argues that a pluralistic democracy requires a "strong integrationist" commitment from all citizens, a commitment that poses strong challenges to the religiously devout and to the cohesion of religious communities. Such integrationist commitments, according to Coetsee, include being active in non-religious civic associations and advancing non-religious reasons for laws that those outside their faith will accept.

The two authors then take turns responding to each other.

This book offers the first study on the relation between the political thought of Thomas Hobbes and the emerging public sphere of early 17th century Britain. It shows how Hobbes's Leviathan can be seen as a philosophical and political response to the media revolution first ushered in by the printing press and later radicalized by the dramatic events of the British Civil Wars. It explains how Hobbes found the root causes of these wars in the struggle for public support wagered by power-hungry clerics and politicians. As this struggle was carried out through informal means such news and pamphlets, aesthetic representations and public mobilization, the book shows how Hobbes devised a complex theory of government to counter the destabilizing tendencies of such strategies. This theory was in turn premised upon a revised conception of human psychology.
