Beyond The BRI: Can India, Japan and the US Provide an Alternative Model of Connectivity? 140 pp. 2024:12 (World Scientific, SI) <741-857>
ISBN 978-981-9805-56-3 hard ¥16,731.- (税込) US$ 78.00
The Indo-Pacific has now emerged as a major area of collaboration between India, Japan and the United States (US). It was in 2018 that the US renamed its Pacific Command as the Indo-Pacific Command. The US and Japan have already been working together on the Build Back Better World (B3W) initiative 'led by major democracies to help narrow the $40+ trillion infrastructure need in the developing world'. In addition, the United States and Japan share a vision of a Free and Open Indo-Pacific while India has an 'Act-East Policy,' and all these meet in the Indo-Pacific. This book will analyse whether India, US and Japan can provide an alternate model of connectivity and infrastructure development in the Indo-Pacific since all the three countries have not joined the China-led BRI.

He, Kai / Liu, Feng (eds.),
China's Bilateral Relations and Order Transition in the Indo-Pacific. 350 pp. 2025:3 (World Scientific, SI) <741-862>
ISBN 978-1-80061-627-1 hard ¥27,456.- (税込) US$ 128.00
The strategic rivalry between the United States and China has emerged as a defining feature of international politics in the Indo-Pacific region. How China engages with the US and other significant stakeholders in the region will intricately shape the trajectory and character of an impending transition in the international order, either through peaceful or confrontational means in the future. This edited volume undertakes a systematic exploration of China's multifaceted interactions with five pivotal players situated in the Indo-Pacific: the United States, Japan, India, Australia, and ASEAN. By delving into both the theoretical underpinnings of state-to-state relationships and the empirical nuances of China's strategic engagements with these five critical actors, this book casts a clarifying light on the complexity of China's bilateral ties within the region. Each of these bilateral relationships is examined from a dual perspective, capturing insights from scholars hailing from both within China and beyond its borders. This comprehensive initiative delves into the different viewpoints held by Chinese academics and their international counterparts regarding the very same bilateral relationship, thereby forging a pairwise comprehension. This book will captivate the attention of scholars and policy analysts alike, fascinated by the dynamics of the US-China competition and the broader realm of geopolitics.

Ali, S. Mahmud,
Asia-Pacific Security Dynamics: US-China-Japan Triadic Trajectories. (Global Power Shift) 359 pp. 2025:1 (Springer, GW) <741-883>
ISBN 978-3-031-78006-6 hard ¥32,490.- (税込) EUR 139.99
This book examines the causes and consequences of the dramatic shift in Japanese national security perspectives and mutually exclusive policies toward China and the USA. It sheds new light on the changing trajectories of triadic dynamics shaping U.S.-China-Japan strategic insecurity, their historical roots, its implications for trans-Pacific peace and stability, and their potential influence on emerging regional and systemic security architectures. Against the backdrop of U.S.-proclaimed "great power competition" with China as the defining feature and organizing principle of the U.S.-led coalition's strategic and geopolitical responses to China's "national rejuvenation," with primacy's "displacement anxiety" triggering a "systemic transitional fluidity," the book examines the origins and outcomes of Sino-Japanese insecurity, its polarizing effects on U.S.-China and U.S.-Japan relations, and the wider systemic resonances and dissonances as the post-Cold War unipolar systemic structure gives way to an uncertain, ambiguous, and imprecise successor regime. Finally, historical lessons drawn from primary documents are used to illuminate the prospects for triangular relations in shaping the Asia-Pacific security ecology over the medium term.

ISBN 978-981-9791-89-7 hard ¥30,169.- (税込) EUR 129.99
This book, part of a two-volume exploration, examines the trajectory of India-China relations, spanning from the making of a common border to the events leading to the 1962 war. Relying on vast Chinese, Indian, as well as western sources, the study provides a detailed exegesis of the nature of conflict covering over a century of political contours in the British India, Manchu China, Republican China and finally the Republic of India and Peoples Republic of China. This includes the British as well as Manchu aggression in Tibet and the ensuing diplomatic manoeuvrability between various stakeholders, resulting in conclusion of various conventions and boundaries including the contentious McMahon Line and shifting line alignments of the Chinese in the Western Sector of India-China border. The domestic socio-political and economic climate as well as the equations that resulted from the Cold War between India and China have been looked into and analysed reflecting the Chinese and well as Indian perspectives. The special case of Sino-Pak entente and India-China rivalry in Asia as a whole has been analysed vis-a-vis their security concerns.

秋田茂著 アジアの視点から見たイギリス帝国史
Akita, Shigeru,
History of the British Empire from Asian Perspectives. (Studies in Economic History) 136 pp. 2025:3 (Springer, GW) <741-379>
ISBN 978-981-9610-03-7 hard ¥30,169.- (税込) EUR 129.99 *
This book presents the history of the British Empire as the "Bridge" for creating a Global History, especially emphasizing its connections with Asian regions. The United Kingdom ruled most of the world in the nineteenth century. Its influence spread around the globe in various forms - in the white settlements such as those in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand (Dominions), in Asian and African regions represented by present-day India, in colonies acquired by military force (Dependencies), and in other regions under its economic influence through trade and investment (the informal empire). Thus, the British Empire played a key role in nineteenth-century globalization. There are many books on the British Empire in English. However, no books from Asian perspectives have interpreted it as "the means used by Asian countries for their own economic development" (and as providers of "international public goods"). Along with the East Asian economic resurgence, the weight of the global system and the world economy has now largely shifted from the Atlantic world to the Asia-Pacific region, encompassing India, as well as the Pacific coast of the United States. The global depression in 2008 accelerated this trend. We now face the task of building a new interpretation of world history with a clearer understanding of this upheaval. Redrawing world history is not an easy task but a good starting point would be to analyze the mutual relationship between the British Empire and the Asian regions, and this can be done by interpreting the historical significance of the British Empire.
