The US Military and the Pacific Environment: The Making of an American Lake. (Modern War Studies) 312 pp. 2025:6 (U. Pr. Kansas, US) <741-897>
ISBN 978-0-7006-3870-3 hard ¥11,795.- (税込) US$ 54.99
The environmental consequences of the US military presence from World War II through the end of the US war in Vietnam.Oceans and deserts, jungles and plains, mountains and rivers, monsoons and blizzards, fertile grounds and diseased lands; all have shaped how strategy and technology has been deployed and developed, and all have supported unexpected victories and decimated even the best-laid plans. Conversely, warfare and militarization have shaped the environment, scarring landscapes, accelerating the global spread of disease, unbalancing ecosystems, and contributing to climate change.Reflecting on the inextricable, reciprocal, and often surprising relationship between the natural world and human warfare, these essays offer a new perspective on power, knowledge, and the environment in US military history. The history of US military engagement in the Pacific powerfully demonstrates the profound and diverse impacts that regions' extraordinarily diverse environments have wrought on warfare. US military action has also had profound impacts in the Pacific, from the nuclear weapons testing programs of the Cold War to the use of chemical defoliants in Vietnam. The contributors to this volume consider how the physical environments of the Pacific shaped the process and outcome of battles and wars, and discuss the effect warfare and other military actions had on these physical environments.

Managing Urban River Ecosystems for Achieving Regional Sustainability in the Pearl River Delta Region. (Urban Sustainability) 160 pp. 2024:12 (Springer, GW) <741-936>
ISBN 978-981-9604-69-2 hard ¥34,811.- (税込) EUR 149.99
This book provides a systematic understanding of urban river management from the perspective of ecosystem health in the Pearl River Delta region of China, where rapid socio-economic development happens together with exploitation and pollution of the natural environment. Urban rivers, which used to support navigation and provide water resources to humans, now suffer from various kinds of ecosystem degradation and thus create threats to regional sustainability. This book treats the urban river as an ecosystem which closely relates to and interacts with humans and defines urban river ecosystem health as a requirement at three levels: sensorial fitness, living water, and affinity with humans, which emphasizes more on the human-oriented needs. The evolution processes of urban river ecosystem health protection can generally be divided into four phases, demonstrating the relationships between human activities and UREH status as simple balance, uncontrolled imbalance, continuous interlocking, and stable harmony. The relationships between typical urban rivers and humans in the Pearl River Delta region, China, are then analyzed on both regional and local scales and from lateral, time-longitudinal, and spatial dimensions. Intensive human activities, together with the intrinsic complex and high-density river network, result in deteriorating water quality, changing hydrological conditions, and damaging the river ecosystem in this region. From the perspective of political ecology, various actors in urban river management include governmental agencies, business, multilateral institutions, ENGOs, and grassroots actors, whose unequal power relations vary over time and space, causing conflicts as well as coordination. Especially, different governmental agencies are engaged, resulting into overlap and gap among their functions as well as spatial discrepancy. River Chief System, as a new practice of urban river management, has strengthened the collaboration effect and got success in river pollution control. The spatial scale effect of human activities on urban river water quality is examined, implying the necessity of adopting a unified management strategy at the buffer zone scale to protect and restore urban river ecosystem health. The target audience of this book includes postgraduate students and researchers who have research interests in, as well as government officers, whose routine is related to water management.

Sustainability in the Coffee Supply Chain: Tensions and Paradoxes. (Palgrave Studies in Logistics and Supply Chain Management) 163 pp. 2024 (Palgrave Macmillan, UK) <741-303>
ISBN 978-3-031-72501-2 hard ¥9,280.- (税込) EUR 39.99
From the field to the cup, this book investigates sustainability issues along the coffee supply chain, identifying the challenges that firms face when they are called to reach sustainability goals. In particular, it explores the relationships involving the actors throughout the broad coffee supply chain, among which some tensions may emerge. Firms increasingly need to interact with various supply chain members to achieve their sustainability goals and with a variety of other stakeholders as well, such as NGOs or regulators. Therefore, in order to fully investigate sustainability, it is fundamental to adopt a broader view of the supply chain that goes beyond dyadic relationships (typically, between customer and supplier). This book adopts an "integrative logic" of sustainability and aims to explore the "hidden" or "dark side" of sustainable practices in the supply chain, for example, trade-offs, tensions and paradoxes. Overlooking these aspects can create serious impediments to a real-world progress toward sustainability. The empirical part of the book is focused on the coffee supply chain, which represents one of the most complex, globalized and inequitable supply chains, impacting communities and the environment worldwide. These characteristics make it particularly challenging for the industry to transition towards sustainability. Sustainability in the coffee sector is increasingly at risk in economic, social, and environmental terms, and there are several interdependencies among these three dimensions. The book will be of great interest to scholars and students of supply chain management, sustainability, and corporate and consumer responsibility. In addition, practitioners operating in the coffee industry could gain interesting findings about the most critical issues pertaining to sustainable practices and activities.

Gulf Coast Demise?: Climate Change, Conservation, and Saving the American Sea. (Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies Series) 296 pp. 2025:6 (Texas A&M U. Pr., US) <741-1017>
ISBN 978-1-64843-279-8 hard ¥10,725.- (税込) US$ 50.00
The once formidable Rio Grande Delta has vanished, and unsustainable land loss in south Louisiana will result in the virtual loss of the Mississippi River Delta by 2050. Barrier islands, peninsulas, and chenier plains across the Gulf Coast are experiencing unprecedented erosion; fragile wetlands and seagrass meadows are vanishing rapidly; and the Gulf's largest estuaries are at a tipping point where their bayhead deltas will experience rapid landward retreat in the next few decades. These alarming trends are a reversal from the coastal stability and growth that occurred during the past few thousand years-a reversal caused mainly by human alterations of natural sediment supply and dispersal systems coupled with a six-fold increase in sea-level rise in historic time. Meanwhile, warmer surface water temperatures are fueling larger, more powerful hurricanes that rapidly intensify before making landfall. Gulf Coast states have been slow in recognizing the magnitude of this problem and are unprepared to alter these dramatic changes. In Gulf Coast Demise? Climate Change, Conservation, and Saving the American Sea, author John B. Anderson provides both scientific documentation of the ongoing demise of the United States Gulf Coast and a call to action.

Hess, Scott,
Landscapes of Genius and the Transatlantic Origins of Environmentalism: Nineteenth-Century British and American Literary Cultures of Nature. 297 pp. 2025:7 (Cambridge U. Pr., UK) <741-1022>
ISBN 978-1-009-56125-9 hard ¥25,344.- (税込) GB£ 90.00
During the nineteenth century, the idea of 'genius' became associated with natural landscapes on both sides of the Atlantic. Scott D. Hess explores how those associations defined the modern significance of nature and precipitated the emergence of National Parks and the environmental movement. William Wordsworth's identification with the English Lake District, Henry David Thoreau's with Walden, and John Muir's with Yosemite established the paradigm of the 'landscape of genius,' through which authors and landscapes entered the nature-writing canon and national high culture. The book also explores the significance of race, gender, and class for such landscapes, as evidenced in writings by African American author Frederick Douglass; American woman writer, Susan Fenimore Cooper; and British laboring-class poets Robert Burns, John Clare, and Ann Yearsley. Fundamentally reshaping how we understand nineteenth-century transatlantic cultures of nature, Hess reveals the ongoing legacy of the landscape of genius for environmental politics today.

Ecological Imperialism in Early Modern Spanish Narratives: Excavating the Environmental Conflicts of the Iberian Globalization. (Environmental Humanities in Pre-modern Cultures) 236 pp. 2024:12 (Amsterdam U. Pr., NE) <741-1023>
ISBN 978-90-485-6736-2 hard ¥30,131.- (税込) GB£ 107.00
How are the environmental conflicts of our time intertwined with the legacies of Spanish imperialism and early modern globalization? In Ecological Imperialism in Early Modern Spanish Narratives: Excavating the Environmental Conflicts of the Iberian Globalization, Miguel Ibanez Aristondo argues that to understand the historical ramifications of the ecological crisis, it is imperative to excavate the fragmented histories and entangled viewpoints associated with European imperialism. Drawing on early modern Iberian, Indigenous, and European sources, the book interrogates how early modern debates regarding war, free trade, abundance, property, race, sovereignty, and history were deeply entwined within ideas and theories driving the relationship between humans and the environment. By exploring the conflict-ridden experiences arising from Spanish imperialism, the book argues that ecological crises have given rise to divergent visions and social hierarchies over time, driven by environmental conflicts opposing social justice and collective life to capital accumulation and imperial competition.

Positive Tipping Points: How to Fix the Climate Crisis. 272 pp. 2025:9 (Oxford U. Pr., UK) <741-1027>
ISBN 978-0-19-887578-9 hard ¥5,632.- (税込) GB£ 20.00
We can all play a part in triggering positive tipping points that accelerate us out of the climate crisis. How do we get out of a climate crisis of our own making? As global change escalates, we are already starting to experience damaging tipping points in the social, ecological and climate systems that we depend upon - and much worse is to come. These shocks tell us we have left it too late for incremental change to save us: we need to change course fast to avoid the worst, yet we are acting far too slowly. Our supposed leaders appear paralysed by the complexity of the situation or, worse still, determined to maintain the status quo. This is leading to increasing despair, especially among young people. At the same time, hopeful signs of change are also growing fast. The climate movement, the spread of electric vehicles, and the rise of renewable energy are all examples of change accelerating in the right direction. They have all passed tipping points where their uptake becomes self-propelling, taking the status quo by surprise - and they are spreading worldwide. To get ourselves out of trouble in time, we need more of these positive tipping points towards global sustainability, which eliminate greenhouse gas emissions, reverse the destruction of nature, and promote social justice. This book identifies the positive tipping points that can help us avoid the worst from damaging tipping points. It takes the reader on a journey through understanding how tipping points happen, showing how tipping points have transformed human societies in the past, and facing up to the profound risks that climate tipping points pose to us all now. Then, it offers hope and empowerment in a series of uplifting examples of social and technological changes that started small but are already spreading rapidly to transform our societies to a more sustainable state. It identifies the positive tipping points that are still needed, the forces that are opposing them, and the actions that can trigger them, showing how we can all play a part in triggering positive tipping points that accelerate us out of the climate crisis.

A Research Agenda for Landscape Studies of Planning. (Elgar Research Agendas) 224 pp. 2025:5 (E. Elgar, UK) <741-1035>
ISBN 978-1-80392-969-9 hard ¥26,752.- (税込) GB£ 95.00
Elgar Research Agendas outline the future of research in a given area. Leading scholars are given the space to explore their subject in provocative ways, and map out the potential directions of travel. They are relevant but also visionary. This timely Research Agenda explores the complex and contested role that landscape plays in planning. It promotes theoretically driven, pluralistic research to enrich understanding of the landscape-planning interplay, examining how the broader discipline of landscape studies can complement and critique the dominant field of landscape science. An expert, multidisciplinary and international team of authors discuss the centrality of landscape in modern socio-environmental conflicts and advocate for landscape to be situated and studied as a matter of concern in planning. Using innovative case studies, such as the attempts to master landscapes to defend against flooding in New Orleans and post-fire landscapes in Sweden, they illustrate the importance of studying this area in an 'undisciplined' manner beyond the limits of contemporary academic discourse. Ultimately, this book demonstrates how a broader and more interdisciplinary approach to landscape studies can help to conceptualize current landscape issues and conflicts as well as identifying future solutions.Students and scholars of landscape studies and environmental and landscape planning will greatly benefit from this pioneering Research Agenda. It is also a key resource for those studying architecture and human geography.

Of Climate and Gender: An Ecofeminist Hegemony Analysis of the Indian and EU Climate Policy Discourses and Identities. 405 pp. 2024 (Springer VS, GW) <741-1037>
ISBN 978-3-658-46773-9 paper ¥20,885.- (税込) EUR 89.99
What significance do gendered discourse structures have for the state identity of India and the EU when it comes to their respective climate policies? This question is the focus of the study, which offers a comprehensive analysis of the climate discourse of the emerging power India and the EU, often described as a leader of climate change governance. Following the assumption that, although a wide variety of solutions to the greatest challenge of our time - the climate crisis - have been formulated, politicians of various states and regional organisations opt almost exclusively for technological responses, this study explores one possible cause: firmly anchored gender structures within both the Indian and EU climate discourses. Anja Zuern employs the ecofeminist hegemony analysis she developed for this study, first reconstructing the climate policy identities of India and the EU, and then subjecting them to an ecofeminist critique.
