Existing perspectives suggest that waves of rural unrest arise as responses to economic and environmental shocks. We propose an integrated framework, grounded in the literature on interest group politics and state-society relations, to explain the dynamics of rural protests by commercial farmers and peasants in democracies during periods of disruptive and rapid change. Focusing empirically on South America during the 2000s agricultural boom, we argue that contentious collective action under democratic rule during shocks is a costly political strategy shaped by access to connections in formal policymaking arenas and the cohesiveness of organizations representing farmer and peasant interests. To substantiate our argument, we conduct within- and cross-case comparisons of Argentina and Paraguay, employing a mix of primary and secondary evidence, and incorporating shadow cases from Brazil and Bolivia.

This book explores Turkey's transformation into an active and influential emerging power under the Justice and Development Party (AKP) and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. It argues that populist governance and foreign policy are not separate domains but expressions of a common political logic. Erdogan's populism does not simply shape Turkey's international engagement; it extends into it, producing a distinct form of populist revisionism that reworks regional orders in line with domestically forged antagonisms.

Situating Turkey's transformation within broader global trends, notably the erosion of liberal democratic institutions domestically and the unravelling of the rules-based international order, frames the core inquiry of this study. This analysis provides a sophisticated framework for understanding Turkey's foreign policy within the broader contestation of liberal norms, multilateral institutions, and the very concept of democracy itself, raising crucial questions about the resilience of liberal democracy and the adaptability of the international system in an age of populist ascendancy.

It will appeal to scholars, policymakers, international relations professionals, students, and general readers interested in populism, Turkish politics, and international relations.

The Asia-Pacific Regional Security Assessment (APRSA) advances rigorous analysis of the deeper drivers, emerging trends and future trajectories of the key security challenges and policies currently shaping the Asia-Pacific. It contextualises the broader debates at the IISS Shangri-La Dialogue, Asia's premier defence summit convened by the International Institute for Strategic Studies, where the Strategic Dossier is published and launched every year.

This thirteenth edition of the APRSA covers six chapters and is written by 11 IISS experts from across its offices in London, Berlin Singapore and Washington and includes original maps, graphs, charts and tables. The chapters collectively examine how military perception, strategic geography and emerging technology continue to shape major security policies and trends across the Asia-Pacific.

The special-topic chapter this year will examine how the military doctrines of major and regional powers will shape the future of warfare in the Asia-Pacific. The other five chapters cover the following topics:

  • Land-force modernisation in Asia
  • Quantum-security cooperation between Japan, South Korea and the US
  • Nuclear-weapons modernisation risks in the Asia-Pacific
  • Maritime choke-point contestation in the Indian Ocean
  • Thailand's frontline role in addressing the post-coup Myanmar conflict

The book offers a systematic and empirical assessment of political stability across seven regional states: Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Tuerkiye, Iran, Russia, and Ukraine. Using a newly constructed analytical tool, the Stability Index of Political Systems, it introduces a composite methodology that combines political, economic, and social indicators to measure and interpret stability levels across different regimes and historical phases. Through individual country analyses and a cross-country comparison, the book reveals the diverse factors influencing state resilience, the impact of external actors, authoritarian tendencies, and post-conflict realities. Special attention is paid to the consequences of the 2020 Artsakh War, Russia's aggression in Ukraine, and regional geopolitical shifts. The book offers an innovative methodological lens and provides a rare comparative perspective, grounded in both theory and quantitative analysis. It fills a critical gap by translating qualitative political trends into measurable insights, making it a valuable resource for academic and policy-related applications.

In an era dominated by technocratic debates about efficiency, effectiveness and the economy, the fundamental purposes of public policy are too often left unquestioned. This narrow focus risks obscuring the democratic and redistributive aims that give state action its legitimacy.

Drawing on political philosophy and foundational public policy scholarship, this book offers a critical framework for analysing state action beyond the logic of the '3Es'. Through a sustained examination of social and economic policies in Mexico since the 1980s, it traces how neoliberal reforms, extractive institutions and limited forms of participation have shaped exclusionary outcomes. Its analytical toolkit applies to Global South contexts with colonial legacies, weak states and powerful oligarchies.

Written in clear, accessible language, this invaluable book reframes policy evaluation around the questions of what public policies are for and who they are meant to serve, and identifies alternative pathways towards truly inclusive and participatory democracy.

This book critically examines how public relations theory and practice are being redefined within the sociopolitical, cultural, and technological realities of the Global South. Grounded in Southern African scholarship, the book challenges dominant Western paradigms by foregrounding relational, ethical, and contextually embedded approaches to strategic communication.

Through theoretically rich and empirically informed chapters, the volume explores key contemporary themes shaping the field, including metamodernism, dialogic engagement, digital intermediation, sustainability communication, anti-fragile crisis management, participatory governance, and the future of PR education in an AI-mediated world. Collectively, these perspectives advance a more inclusive understanding of PR as a discipline that transcends functionalist traditions to embrace social responsibility, authenticity, and transformative dialogue.

Intended for scholars and reflective practitioners, this volume positions Southern Africa as an intellectual contributor to global PR thought. It underscores the field's evolving role in cultivating trust, transparency, and resilience, and in shaping public relations as a strategic and ethical force for societal progress in an interconnected, rapidly changing world. The book will particularly appeal to advanced public relations scholars seeking critical insights into developing PR practice and theory in the context of AI and related fields, including strategic communication, advertising, journalism, and digital marketing.

This book investigates how Palestinians engage in compensatory movements to negotiate political authority, collective identity, and everyday life by opening alternative routes and creating functional spaces.

What sets this work apart is its innovative focus on the principle of compensation, which disrupts linear readings of functionality or dysfunction in Palestinian spaces. Rather than viewing Palestinian life through dominant frameworks of resistance, resilience, victimhood, or adaptation to Westphalian norms, this book reveals how refugee camps, humanitarian agencies, pro-Palestinian demonstrations, and underground networks emerge as spaces of co-existential agency where circulatory mobilities take place. By examining Gaza's heterotopias, tunnel economies, UNRWA's evolving role, and more-than-human dimensions of Palestinian spaces, the authors demonstrate how compensatory processes sustain Palestinian political, economic, and symbolic life despite what is seen as settler colonialism and oppression. Drawing on spatial analysis, security studies, organization theory, and insights from continental philosophy, this interdisciplinary approach illuminates how Palestinians transcend rigid binaries of functional/dysfunctional spaces and fixed power asymmetries, challenging scholars to see beyond dominant paradigms and recognize compensation as a driving force in forging new spatial possibilities.

This book will be of much interest to students, experts, and policy-makers engaged in Human and Political Geography, Postcolonial Studies, Middle East and Palestine, Peace and Conflict Studies, and Anthropology.

Research on street-level bureaucracy has largely been shaped by perspectives from the Global North, leaving limited understanding of how frontline workers operate in vulnerable, unequal and politically unstable settings.

Street-Level Bureaucrats in Vulnerable Contexts addresses this gap through a systematic, empirically grounded analysis of frontline state actors across health, education, law enforcement and social work in Brazil. Drawing on over twenty years of research, the book shows how vulnerability reshapes discretion, decision-making and citizen-state interactions.

Combining theoretical innovation with methodological rigor, it offers a globally relevant framework for understanding policy implementation in high-risk, resource-constrained environments across both South and North contexts.

This book examines the politics of the Korean defence industry's global expansion and outreach in the recent 2020s, exploring the future evolution of the industry, which has been undergoing the stunningly speedy AI transformation (or equivalent) and the role it is set to play in the global security structure.

Despite being faced with considerable challenges over the past 60-plus years (including technological unfeasibility, long-term economic inefficiency, and political pressures), Korea's defense industry has successfully capitalized on significant global expansion opportunities that have emerged in the 2020s. Its strategic implication has been growing fast under the evolving condition of security convergence in interregional as well as interdimensional perspectives. Chapters also analyze the impact of Korea's growing reliance on defense-industry, which is becoming increasingly significant to the country's stock market and national strategy. The book then examines the long-term sustainability of the rapid expansion so far enjoyed by Korea's defense industry, and looks to the strategic approaches needed to firmly consolidate its top-ranking status in global arms market.

Ultimately providing theoretical, analytical and empirical perspectives on the Korean defense industry's global expansion, this book will be of use to scholars and postgraduates in the fields of security studies, international political economy, and Korean studies more broadly. Policy makers involved in security and military policy, military personnel, business leaders, engineers, journalists, and decision makers will also find the volume of use.

This book presents a rare ethnographic account of young people's experiences within Ghana's custodial and correctional institutions. From an actor-oriented perspective and grounded in fieldwork and interviews, it uncovers how juvenile and young offenders navigate and resist the corrective intentions of these centres. While such institutions formally promote rehabilitation through structured programmes, the book highlights a disconnect between these aims and confinement realities. It calls for a rethinking of both theory and practice to better reflect the lived experiences of incarcerated youth.

Essential for scholars of juvenile justice, criminology, and confinement ethnography, particularly in African and Global South contexts.

Spanning seven decades of India's independent history, this book offers a comprehensive exploration of the evolution of India's Neighbourhood Policy. It examines the ideational and strategic choices of successive Indian Prime Ministers, highlighting how their leadership styles, ideologies, and decisions have shaped India's engagement with its South Asian neighbours.

Anchored in India's colonial legacy, hegemonic aspirations, and strategic autonomy, the book adopts a holistic lens, treating the neighbourhood as a unified strategic construct. It delves into the interplay of geopolitics, realism, and diplomacy that has defined India's regional approach, offering a nuanced understanding of its foreign policy trajectory. It stands out for its dual focus on historical continuity and individual agency, uncovering patterns in India's neighbourhood policy across shifting geopolitical landscapes. Employing rigorous qualitative research and triangulating multiple data sources, it examines the strategic dimensions underpinning India's policy and the pivotal role of Prime Ministers and their leadership styles in shaping its contours.

This book is an essential resource for scholars, researchers, journalists, and students of international relations, South Asian studies, and global politics. Academics will find it invaluable for understanding India's neighbourhood diplomacy and its broader implications for regional and global dynamics.

This book revisits the period of rapprochement tourism between China and Taiwan from 2008 to 2016, highlighting the role it played in facilitating cultural exchange despite ongoing political tensions.

Contextualizing rapprochement tourism within broader discussions on cross-border tourism in politically sensitive regions, this book proposes a concept of 'cultural geopolitics' and an interdisciplinary framework - Mobility, Morality and Materiality - to offer a fresh perspective on heritage management. It employs tourist interviews, photographs and other visual aids to communicate complex theoretical concepts in an accessible manner. Topics covered include border repoliticization, the role of heritage in national narratives, the commodification of historical figures, and the intersection of spirituality and tourism. The book closes by outlining future directions for research, including difficult heritage management, individualized mobilities, and kinship-based return tourism, before concluding with reflections on sustainable peace and well-being.

This book will interest a range of scholars spanning the social sciences, including critical tourism studies, heritage management, cultural geography, and Chinese studies.

The Global South and the Future of World Order presents an analysis of some of the fundamental, new processes in international politics today from a multi-regional perspective originating from the "Global South."

What feasible institutional, normative/cultural, technological, and economic solutions coming from intellectuals from the Global South can be proposed to make the international order more inclusive and better governed and thus more stable, more prosperous, and peaceful? By answering this question, the book innovatively contributes to the explanation of potential directions, depth, consistency, and durability of current shifts in international relations originating in the Global South. Contributions from internationally renowned scholars from different parts of the Global South present politically and culturally diverse perspectives. They explore the political, economic, institutional, and social consequences of the growing influence of the Global South and examine the contested political subjectivities
of the Global South itself. The various policy alternatives to advance institutional, social, financial, technological, security, and cultural interests of the Global South are also discussed.

The Global South and the Future of World Order will be of great interest to students and scholars of political science and international relations. It will also appeal to policymakers and analysts seeking to achieve a better understanding of contemporary global trends.

This book examines the rise and fall of Sino-Czech relations after 2012, which coincided with China's outward political and economic expansion through the Belt and Road Initiative and the construction of a global network of partnerships, including in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). Drawing on relational theory rooted in the Chinese concept of guanxi, the authors analyze to what extent China was able to secure the compliance of the Czech Republic with its core interests.

The volume extends the application of relationality beyond its conventional focus on China's engagement with Africa, Southeast Asia, and Latin America. The key to understanding China's approach to CEE lies in the region's perceived peripherality in China's intellectual and political tradition. By situating China's approach within the broader context of relations with the Global South, the book sheds light on the instruments through which China consolidates its global position.

It provides empirically grounded analysis for academics, policy analysts, and decision-makers seeking to better understand Sino-Czech relations, China's policy toward CEE, and patterns of China's global engagement. It will also be of interest to students and scholars of International Relations (IR), especially those engaged with non-Western IR theory.

This edited book examines the link between peace or violent conflict and the practice of governance in African states.

Exploring the historical roots of today's African challenges, the chapters explore the sources of legitimacy in African states and help to clarify how a strengthened social contract can be built in societies facing the fact or threat of conflict. The volume includes a variety of case study examples to illustrate the performance of states on topics such as including women, youth, and civil society, on coping with the challenge of extremism, on respecting the potential contributions of traditional authorities, and on delivering key governance outputs such as the rule of law and delivering essential services. Some chapters explore the trajectory of conflict management initiatives led from within Africa by regional and sub-regional bodies, while others give greater attention to the role of outside actors. While there have been numerous studies on conflict in Africa as well as on the impact of bad governance on specific countries, there have been few that have made the link between governance and conflict as it manifests across the continent. By exploring these issues in depth, this book sets an agenda for further research in the fields of conflict resolution, politics, and governance.

This book will be of much interest to students and practitioners of conflict management, African politics, global governance, and International Relations.

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands (ANI) occupy a uniquely strategic position at the mouth of the Bay of Bengal, forming one of the most strategically located island chains in the world. Positioned close to the Strait of Malacca, these 572 islands serve as the first land connection from the Strait and overlook one of the world's busiest sea lines of communication. As the Indo-Pacific becomes the new theatre of great power contestation in the 21st century, the Andaman Sea will no longer remain the tranquil backwater it has been for the past two centuries. This comprehensive volume brings together accomplished academicians and practitioners to examine the multifaceted importance of the ANI through three distinct sections: history, geography, and tradition; security dimensions; and economic development and connectivity. The volume adopts a multidisciplinary approach, relying on substantial primary sources and combining theoretical frameworks with situational assessments. It addresses critical, yet understudied, aspects, including maritime boundaries with Indonesia and Myanmar, marine ecosystems, underwater domain awareness, power projection capabilities, and blue economy potential.

This volume is essential reading for students, researchers, academicians, policymakers, and think tanks engaged in South Asian studies, maritime security, Indo-Pacific affairs, strategic studies, and international relations. It provides invaluable insights for understanding India's maritime profile and the geostrategic significance of the ANI in contemporary global affairs.

This book explores the policymaking processes that led to Japan's modern immigration regime, including the rejection of formal immigration policy and its wider implications.

Taking a historical approach, the book identifies the "1990 system"-namely, the reforms Japan's policymakers enacted in and around 1990-as the crucial antecedent to understanding the overall continuity in the country's immigration policy trajectory. Through an actor-focused analysis, this book dissects how and why Japan adopted its seemingly contradictory immigration policy-one that simultaneously accommodates and distances itself from an ever-growing pool of foreign laborers.

Contextualizing the current status quo of immigration in Japan and using rigid historical analysis to anticipate future developments, Japan's Modern Immigration Regime will appeal to policymakers, as well as students and scholars of Japanese politics, labor migration studies, and comparative public policy studies.

Policy Process Frameworks in Practice offers a fresh and critical look at the main frameworks used to study policy processes, with a unique focus on their application in Brazil and Latin America.

Rather than simply presenting theories, it examines how these models are used in practice, highlighting both their strengths and their limits. By shifting attention to the Global South, the book challenges the idea that frameworks developed in the Northern Hemisphere are only applied elsewhere, showing instead how they are reshaped and enriched in new contexts. Each chapter follows a clear and accessible structure: a concise overview of the framework, a systematic review of its reception in Brazilian and Latin American scholarship, and a critical discussion of whether and how causal explanations are employed. This approach provides readers with both conceptual clarity and empirical depth, while also pointing to gaps and opportunities for future research.

Bringing a critical Global South perspective, this book challenges established policy frameworks, broadens international debates, and provides scholars with refined tools to understand how policies take shape and change.

This book combines process tracing with original quantitative and qualitative analysis of U.S. and Chinese official discourse, legislation, and elite perspectives in order to trace the key turning points in Sino-U.S. relations since the 1970s.

Challenging the Thucydides Trap and Power Transition Theory, the book argues that war between China and the United States is not structurally inevitable. Instead, their relationship has been shaped-and often stabilized-by shifting mechanisms across different phases of power transition. It identifies three core stabilizers: Stability through Ambiguity, where uncertainty about intentions and capabilities delays containment; Mutually Assured Economic Destruction (MAED) / Reciprocal Vulnerability Interdependence (RVI), where asymmetric interdependence creates credible deterrence; and Order-Succession Rise, where a rising power inherits and adapts-rather than overturns-the existing order, as the status quo power seeks alternatives.

By integrating historical comparison with rigorous empirical evidence, it offers a theoretically innovative and globally generalizable account of power transition-one that explains how sustained stability is possible even amid intensifying great power competition. This book will appeal to students and scholars of Chinese politics, US politics, comparative politics, and international relations.

Interrogating the notion of medical knowledge and public health practices in colonial India, this volume explores the complex encounters between Western medical systems and indigenous healing traditions during British rule. The book examines how colonial medical institutions functioned as instruments of both care and control, while indigenous practices retained their relevance among the masses. Through detailed case studies including W.M. Haffkine's plague vaccine campaigns, the Rockefeller Foundation's public health interventions, and the evolution of medical research under colonial constraints, the book reveals the multifaceted nature of medical encounters at various sites between 1820 and 1920. The analysis extends to examining the Indian Medical Gazette as a mirror reflecting contemporary medical debates, the contours of medical research in a colonial laboratory, and comparative perspectives from other colonies in Southeast Asia and East Africa. The work demonstrates how medical knowledge became a contested terrain where scientific advancement, colonial politics, and indigenous resistance intersected.

This book will be of significant interest to historians of medicine, colonial studies scholars, public health professionals, sociologists, and policy planners seeking to understand the historical foundations of contemporary medical systems in South Asia. It offers valuable insights for postgraduate students and researchers in medical history, colonial history, public health, and South Asian studies.

This book examines the role of airpower in the great power rivalry between the United States and the People's Republic of China in the East and South China Sea over Taiwan.

While the volume emphasises the role of the U.S. and the PRC, it also looks at the other regional powers with significant airpower capabilities. By including key actors heavily invested in the regional dynamics between the two great powers, this book offers new research on how each actor views the use of airpower to enhance its regional political, military strategic, and operational leverage. The first two sections of the book focus on the People's Republic of China and the United States, with each section considering (i) their grand strategy in the region, (ii) their military strategy to handle a future conflict over Taiwan, (iii) the role of airpower to this end, and finally (iv) their approach to Multi-Domain Operations or Joint All-Domain Operations. The third section looks at the most dominant regional powers with significant airpower capabilities: Taiwan, Japan, South-Korea and Australia. Finally, the fourth section examines influential alliances in the region; first the relation between Russia, China and North-Korea (DPRK), then NATO, and finally The Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, or The Quad, including Australia, India, Japan, and the United States. The volume will help readers better understand the complex and dynamic strategic and military context of this region, and how airpower can be used to enhance the political, military strategic and operational leverage of the various actors in the East and South China Sea.

This book will be of much interest to students of strategic studies, air power, Asian politics, and International Relations.

Psychology, Law and Society in India: The Unconscious Republic uses psychoanalysis to look below the surface of the apparently rational legal system, consider the subterranean factors at play and devise interventions to bring law closer to justice.

With specific reference to India, Rakesh Shukla takes a look at the relationship between love and rage in intimate relationships, the impact of the father-son dynamic in politics and inter-community relations. Shukla considers the dynamics behind parental love and 'honor killings', Hindu sexuality and fanaticism, and how the 'other' comes to be viewed as 'evil'.

Grounded in law, clinical practice, and interventions in judicial training, this book will be of interest to anyone wishing to learn more about the interface of society, the psyche and law.

This book offers a qualitative cohort analysis in a comparative case study of national identity and political violence in the Basque and Kurdish contexts.

Rooted in the author's work concerning social reproduction mechanisms of political violence, it examines two non-state politico-military organizations, Euskadi Ta Askatasuna (ETA, Basque Homeland and Freedom) and Partiya Karkeren Kurdistan (PKK, Kurdistan Workers' Party), the vanguard actors of two long-lasting ethnic conflicts in Spain and Turkey. It draws upon in-depth interviews conducted in the Basque Country and Kurdistan with former and active militants of both organizations who exercised violent practices to show how individuals within certain age groups share a specific range of experiences, a particular mode of thought, and historically relevant actions. This generational analysis illuminates a cause-and-effect relationship explaining the emergence and continuity of armed struggle in specific time intervals.

This volume will therefore appeal to a wide range of scholars and researchers of sociology, social movement, history, political sciences, and anthropology.
